Annual Report
Dear Friends,
As I sat down to write the Letter from the Chair for the 2015 Annual Report,
I was struck by how fortunate I am to be part of an organization that has
had so many successes over the past year. Of course, this wealth of
accomplishments made selecting the ones to include in my letter a real
challenge. Now, this is a problem I was delighted to tackle! So here are just a few highlights of the
ways in which we, with community support from people like you, have been able to improve the
lives of the people we serve.
• We have continued to grow, adding a new residential program in Athol for 8
individuals with psychiatric disabilities. This program has gotten off to such a terrific start in
efforts to connect the residents to the local community that two of its staff members are
profiled later in this report.
• We moved one of the residential programs we took over last year to a beautiful new
home in Princeton.
• We enrolled 24 new families in our Adult Family Care services, almost a 25%
increase over the year before.
• And, we supported 153 individuals in paid employment positions, while 99 took
on volunteer jobs.
After a very long seven year wait, this year finally saw the partial implementation of the law known as
Chapter 257 – legislation that was designed to ensure fair rate setting for the Commonwealth’s
human service providers. With new rates set for our developmental disability services, we were able
to provide meaningful salary increases for our wonderful and dedicated staff for the first time
in many years. We hope that the coming year will bring the implementation of Chapter 257 for our
mental health services.
We thank you for your role in this year’s success. No matter how you support Alternatives
– with a donation, by attending an event, as a volunteer, or by letting your legislators know you
consider disability service funding to be important – you are helping the 1200 people we serve
begin each day with a personalized plan to improve their lives.

Since the founding of Alternatives, close to forty
years ago, we have been committed to providing the
individuals we serve real opportunities to become
valued members of their communities. We know
how much people with psychiatric or developmental
disabilities benefit when communities are inclusive
and welcoming. In actuality, our many years of
experience have shown that everyone benefits.
Side by side, every day, people we serve and others
in the community are Living Together, Working
Together, and Learning Together. Together,
they are improving their own lives and helping to
build stronger, healthier communities for everyone
to enjoy.

Remember the last time you
welcomed friends into your
home for an evening of
good food, laughter and
conversation? The question
alone probably brought
a smile to your face.
Gatherings like these
help us all to feel more
connected to others and the
world around us. For the
people with psychiatric
disabilities Alternatives’
serves, those connections are
often missing from their lives.
The Wider Circles project
was initiated more than two
years ago to help address
the issue of isolation faced
by some individuals served
by Alternatives’ mental health
programs in Worcester.
The plan was to offer a
monthly dinner. One month
the event would be hosted by
Alternatives with individuals and
staff preparing the meal for
their guests. The next month’s
dinner would be hosted by
a group of people living
cooperatively in a home on
Orne Street in Worcester.
Nat Needle, who coordinates
the project, says that initially
the group needed to engage
in ice breaker activities in
order to help everyone feel
comfortable. But, over time,
as people have gotten
to know each other,
conversation just seems
to flow. The sixteen or so
attendees find themselves
chatting easily about
common interests and shared
experiences.

inclusiveness and community.

opened in March 2015,

already spent months planning
how to implement all they
hoped to achieve for the
residents. High up on their
list was making sure the eight
men and women who call
the program home would
have the opportunity to build
solid connections and play a
meaningful role in the life of
their community.
Although the program was
new, Bridget and Bobby had
been working for Alternatives
for many years and they both
recognized the importance of
community inclusion.
They were also both
more than willing to use
their own personal
connections and some
non-traditional “research”
methods to uncover
many interesting opportunities.
After all, Bridget hails from
Athol and Bobby, who lives
in Gardner, has a large
business network from his
other work as a member
of a local band.

have been going to the local
YMCA to exercise. Bridget,
whose son attends the Y’s after
school program, was familiar with
their facilities and helped open
the door to a membership that
allows the home’s residents to
exercise at the gym.
A number of individuals from
the program are currently
being trained as volunteers at
the local animal shelter. How
did this opportunity come
about? Bridget chatted with a
woman from the shelter while
stopping at a weekend yard
sale! She also connected
with an animal shelter in
Templeton for possible
volunteer opportunities by
reaching out on Facebook.
Not to be outdone, Bobby
noticed a community garden

in disrepair while taking a
stroll in the neighborhood.
He’s now working with the
Athol Agricultural Commission
to get the garden up and
running again.
Needless to say, we anticipate
that the program’s residents
will play a big part in the
restoration project. Bobby is
also looking into the possibility
of leveraging his music
connections to schedule
open mic nights for people of
all abilities.
Although it’s clear that Bridget
and Bobby’s connections are
helping to ensure that the
individuals they serve are
creating connections of their
own, the Athol program’s early
success is the result of the
entire program staff’s hard
work. As Bridget explains,
“This is a real team effort!”
