T H A N K YO U
It really doesn’t seem like enough to say “thank you.” Words simply cannot
express how thankful we and the families we support are for your generosity this
past year. Your kindness has allowed us to grow by leaps and bounds; enabling
us to support more individuals, establish new partnerships with community
businesses for employment opportunities and avert many emergencies.
Not only have you given to us financially, but you have invested time in
other very important ways that support children and adults with intellectual
and developmental disabilities. A good example of this is our community’s
commitment to completely giving up use of the ‘R’ word, as in “that’s so
retarded.”
This past year, you have given the “gift” of changing the ‘R’ word to “RESPECT.”
All of us deserve respect. And people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities deserve that, just as everyone does.
Many of you have given the “gift” of a job to a person with a disability.
You have given them a chance to earn money and start down the path to
independence. By doing this, you have modeled how seeing abilities, and not
focusing on disabilities, can be beneficial to everyone.
You have given the “gift” of welcoming your new co-workers when they are
hired into your workplace. You recognized their abilities, asked for their help at
times, and freely gave of yours, when needed.
You have given a “gift” of acceptance when you welcome your new neighbors
and invite them to join your community association and to backyard cook-outs.
And finally, perhaps the most important gift you can give: you have taught your
children kindness, empathy, understanding and to welcome “different” students
into their classrooms. By focusing on abilities, who knows what else your
children can learn?

the community we support.

Chris Hayward
A recent Project SEARCH graduate, Chris parlayed his newly acquired skills
as part of the HIRED (Helping Individuals Reach Employment Destinations)
Program into a job at Wegmans Crofton working in the produce section.
His job involves making fresh juice as well as packaging and labeling pre-cut
fruit and vegetables. Chris likes to call himself the “juice beast” because of
his skills with the complicated juicing machine. Wegmans leadership will ask
you, “Want a Job You’ll Love? Then work at Wegmans- we enjoy coming
to work every day. We think you will, too.” Chris gives that sentiment an
enthusiastic thumbs up and that’s because of the team work and camaraderie
he experiences every day he’s at work. Chris envisions many years of learning
and career growth to come and we look forward to sharing in his successes.

David Briscoe
David Briscoe, recent graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at Chesapeake
College in Wye Mills, tested highest in his class on his first final involving cooking
and presenting a meal for panel of community member judges. With several
supports provided by The Arc Central Chesapeake Region, David is on his path to
achievement and fulfillment of his dream to become a sous chef.
