Lafayette Partners in Education | Investing in every child 4,902 students benefit from LPIE each and every school day L A F AY E T T PARTNERS I EDUCATIO Investing in every ch L A F A PART EDUC Investing in 35 years that LPIE (and formerly as LASF) has supported Lafayette’s public schools Annual report for the 2014–15 year LPIE is a critical member of Lafayette’s vibrant community. Lafayette Partners in Education (LPIE) is a community-based education foundation run by parent volunteers working to enhance and expand the educational opportunities for students in Lafayette’s six public schools. 92% of funds raised go directly into the classroom 2,025 parents, families, community members, businesses and other organizations generously gave in 2014–15 to support Lafayette’s public schools and students $2.69 million in contributions were made to LPIE for the 2014–15 school year For 35 years, LPIE has been fulfilling its mission. Since 1980, LPIE donations have provided more than $25 million to support Lafayette’s students. Thanks to our community’s amazing generosity and commitment, LPIE raised $2.69 million dollars this fiscal year, a 10% increase over last year. Your financial support allowed us to invest more than $2.5 million in Lafayette’s six public schools, ensuring that students have access to an exceptional educational experience. What does it mean to be a POWERful community? As strong partnerships with parents, alumni, parent organizations, business owners, real estate professionals, civic leaders, school administrators and teachers are built and developed, the role of our schools in the broader community expands. This positive feedback loop makes Lafayette a place we can all be proud of. Most importantly, we are providing an environment for Lafayette’s children to grow, learn and thrive. The future is bright! Your continued partnership is vital to our schools and our community. Thank you for standing with us as we continue our mission. It’s been another amazing year. Thank you. The Value of LPIE An Exceptional Education Why do public schools need private donations? When we were kids, our families took excellent public education for granted. California schools were ranked as among the best nationally, with per-student spending at the top. With the passage of Proposition 13 and other legal rulings, school districts were no longer the beneficiaries of their community’s property taxes, and California’s per-pupil funding plummeted. While it’s now back on the rise, California still lags in terms of education spending as a percentage of the state’s budget. Local parcel taxes provide approximately 12% of the Lafayette School District budget and 16% of the Acalanes Union High School District budget, but they do not completely fill the gap that remains from inadequate state and federal funding. Your donations to LPIE help bridge that gap, allowing our schools to educate our children at the level that our community demands by covering underfunded programs such as science labs, instructional aides, music, writing, professional development, counseling services, electives in middle and high school, and more. The Lafayette School District owes a huge debt of gratitude to LPIE for their very generous support of so many powerful programs that motivate and inspire our students. It is often said that “it takes a village to raise a child;” LPIE is such an integral and important part of our village. —Rachel Zinn, Superintendent, Lafayette School District Acalanes would not sustain the robust academic offerings and enriched educational opportunities without the support of LPIE. State funding is simply inadequate for the high-quality education our students and parents expect. It is the support of our parents and community through organizations such as LPIE that enable Acalanes to provide such incredible opportunities for our students. —John Nickerson, Ed.D., Superintendent, Acalanes Union High School District Every donation to LPIE is priceless. The benefits to our students and the support of our schools yields amazing results. Just some of this year’s successes we celebrate: ■ 2 Lafayette Elementary was named a California Distinguished School (the 12th such award for a Lafayette public school) Simply stated, that’s the goal of the combined work of the Lafayette School District, the Acalanes Union High School District, parent organizations at each school, and LPIE. LPIE and parent organizations raise funds to support our school districts, working closely with them to identify and determine how to best use those funds to achieve the greatest possible impact on our children’s education. Since 1981, LPIE has been providing a way for parents to make a meaningful, positive investment in their children’s educational experience. As myriad challenges continue to face public education in our state, LPIE will continue to be there for Lafayette students, ensuring that they have access to an enriched and exceptional education. A Message from LPIE’s President and Vice President Thank you! Through the power of our community, 2014–15 was another fantastic year for LPIE. Our successes include: ■ Our largest gift ever to the Lafayette School District—more than $1.8 million in direct support and LPIE programs at our four elementary schools and Stanley Middle School ■ Our largest gift ever to Acalanes High School—over $595,000, ensuring access for our high school students to one of the best public high school experiences in the state We look forward to commemorating our 35th anniversary in 2015–16 by providing our students even more opportunities through additional funding to our partner school districts for programs and support including: ■ Increased aide time in each K–5 classroom ■ Additional professional development for teachers at all levels, including professional development during the summer to limit their time away from the classroom ■ Maintaining a rich variety of class offerings at Acalanes High School We are proud to fund these important areas at a higher level than we have in the past while continuing to maintain our funding for technology, science, music, art, counseling, and other differentiated and enriching learning opportunities. ■ Stanley was named a California Gold Ribbon School, honoring quality and innovation in education ■ The Acalanes Union High School District continues to rank as one of the state’s top districts ■ 67 Project LPIE winners across 14 categories, from science to the arts ■ The Stanley Jazz Messengers were honored by Downbeat magazine as one of the top three U.S. middle-school jazz bands ■ Acalanes Blueprint was named one of the top U.S. high-school newspapers by the American Scholastic Press Association Meredith Meade LPIE President, 2014–16 ■ Numerous teacher awards, including Norm Dea (CMEA President’s Award); Bruce Lengacher (2015 Outstanding Choral Music Educator); Bob Athayde (quarter-finalist for the GRAMMY Foundation Music Educator Award); Mike Meneghetti (Warren W. Eukel Outstanding Teacher Award); and Brian Connolly (California League of Middle Schools Outstanding Educator of the Year Award). Power Party LPIE’s second annual LPIE projected spending for the 2015–16 school year $2.99 million It was 1980, and Lafayette’s public schools were facing devastating cutbacks in the arts and sciences in the wake of the passage of Proposition 13. In response, a group of concerned parents organized to save threatened programs. With an initial budget of $5,000 and working closely with district teachers and administrators, they spread the word, raised funds, planned programs, hired qualified instructors, and brought art, music and science back into the classroom. Thus, the Lafayette Arts & Science Foundation (LASF) was born. Thirty-five years later, with a name change and shift in its funding model along the way, LPIE continues to make a significant impact on Lafayette’s public schools and students.
