A Culture of
ACCEPTANCE
ADAPTABILITY
Mohon is
A culture of ACCEPTANCE & ADAPTABILITY
We believe it is our collective responsibility to model and teach about character
in our schools. It’s why this year’s calendar focus is Constructing a Culture of
Acceptance & Adoptability. What does that mean? It’s about creating an environment
that encourages respect and inclusion, fosters cooperation and flexibility, nurtures
understanding and empowerment, and inspires resilience and fortitude.
It’s a challenging task – particularly in a world increasingly divided by
differing beliefs. And it’s not something we can do alone. It requires
every single one of us to be involved: administrators, teachers,
parents, students, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, board
members, community members … you get the idea:
It starts with us.
Author and motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once
said, “When given the choice between being right
and being kind, choose kind.” We believe that’s
a great place to start. Throughout the year, we’ll
be using #ItStartsWithUs to share activities and
programs that demonstrate our focus on constructing
a culture of acceptance and adaptability. We hope
you will take a moment to follow the district on
Facebook and Twitter, if you don’t already do so.
You’ll also find a sample of district efforts highlighted
in this year’s calendar.
Please join us as we work to create a kinder future
for all. Together, we can all make a difference in our
schools and in our world.

When the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen opens its doors
in September, students will have access to a variety of modern, high-tech laboratories and
classrooms. Through a unique partnership among Mohonasen, Capital Region BOCES and area
institutions of higher education, students will learn by doing – and meet high school graduation
requirements at the same time. Students will be empowered to create their own futures, gaining
important technical skills and knowledge as they start down a path to a college degree or industry
certification. Symbolically, the partnerships establish a culture of sharing, adaptability and
collaboration as key skills to be successful in the 21st century. #ItStartsWithUs

Bradt Primary School and Pinewood Intermediate School each hold a monthly
Character Education Program that focuses on promoting a school
community of respect, responsibility and positive citizenship. At Bradt, these
lessons are incorporated into morning program while at Pinewood, they are shared
through the Character Counts program and lessons provided by the School Guidance
Counselor. Teachers are encouraged to integrate themes into their curriculum, and
each month students from every grade level are recognized for displaying exceptional
behavior related to the month's theme. #ItStartsWithUs

Mohonasen students can now graduate with a Career Development
Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential added to their
high school diplomas. The credential was only available for students with disabilities
until June 2016, when the Board of Regents adopted the change. The credential indicates
that students are ready for entry-level employment after high school and have met
requirements related to employability skills and career exploration and training. The
move makes a high school diploma accessible to more students. #ItStartsWithUs

Students and staff at Draper Middle School and Mohonasen High School have an
opportunity to give back to the community thanks to a partnership with the City Mission
of Schenectady. Twice per month, middle school and high school students and staff
volunteer after school at the sorting center in Rotterdam. Other projects realized through
this partnership include serving meals to City Mission residents and holding clothing
and food drives at school. The projects encourage cooperation and understanding.

Draper Middle School’s Mindfulness Program helps students as well as adults
learn to be present in the moment and to acknowledge their thoughts and feelings
without judging them as “good” or “bad.” Research shows mindfulness has physical,
mental health and social benefits, including improved concentration and self-control,
decreased anxiety and increased happiness. The goal is to empower students and
encourage resilience. #ItStartsWithUs

Teachers are supported through a variety of Professional Development opportunities during the school
year. From learning about new technology to reviewing curriculum changes, teachers continually gather information
that can improve understanding. One area of professional development focus for 2016-17 is poverty. We are trying to
understand the district's changing demographics and the implications for student needs and classroom instruction so
we can adapt our practices and attitudes to accept students where they are. One important approach in our professional
development sessions is collaboration. Teachers meet regularly to find ways to help students connect the dots between
the classroom and the real world. They model flexibility by working together between classrooms or across departments.

Science Lab Exam
An in-school field trip to the Mohonasen High School Technology Department gave students from Mrs. Restifo’s
grades 9-12 special education classes an opportunity to meet with the high school robotics team. The students learned
about a robot built by robotics team members and saw it in action. It’s an example of how powerful inclusion can be –
students sharing enthusiasm for technology. #ItStartsWithUs

Release of Student Directory
Information
From time to time, student directory information
is published on the Mohonasen website, in school
publications or released to the media to recognize
student achievement or depict activities within the
Mohonasen School District. Parents who object to
the disclosure of their child’s directory information
should notify BOTH the superintendent of schools
and their child’s building principal – in writing – on
or before September 15 of each school year.
For more details, see the “Release of Directory
Information” notice on the district website at www.
mohonasen.org.
Asbestos Management
ing pests with minimal impact on human health
and the environment. Pesticides are only used
as a last resort; however, it is possible that they
may be needed periodically. Following state law,
Mohonasen maintains a list of staff and parents/
guardians who wish to receive notification when
certain pesticide applications are used. If you
would like to be added to this list, contact Joe
Mayo at 356-8228. More information, including
a notification request form, can be found on our
website.
Closings and Delays
Closings, such as an unplanned early dismissal,
are communicated via an automated phone
messaging system to all phone numbers parents
have provided. Please note, the district does NOT
use the automated phone system for snow day
announcements. Closings, as well as snow day
announcements, are posted on the web at www.
mohonasen.org and on Facebook, sent out via
e-mail/text message through School News Notifier
(SNN) and are also released to all local TV stations
and major radio stations. No matter what grade
level, make sure your children know what to do
if they arrive home unexpectedly and you’re not
there. For safety’s sake, now is the time to create
a plan.
Release of Student Information Under
NCLB
Parochial Transportation form with the principal
of the parochial school where their children will
attend. Principals of parochial schools will collect
forms, complete the certificate and forward them
as a group to the school district. Forms are due by
April 1, 2017. Please note that on staff only days,
there will be no private/parochial transportation.
Questions? Call the Mohonasen transportation
office at 356-8260.
Mohonasen Parent Access: SchoolTool
All high school, middle school and Pinewood
parents can use SchoolTool to access their child's
attendance, academic and discipline records
online. High school and middle school interim
reports and report cards are available only through
SchoolTool. (Elementary report cards will continue
to be mailed home). See calendar dates for when
these reports are scheduled to be made available
online. In addition, teachers will update grades and
attendance information in SchoolTool on a regular
basis. To sign up for SchoolTool, or if you are unable to access the Internet, please contact the high
school, middle school or Pinewood main office.
Dignity for All Students Act
New York's Dignity for All Students Act seeks to
provide the state's public school students with
a safe and supportive environment free from
discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment,
and bullying (including cyberbullying) on school
property, a school bus and/or at a school function.
The Act includes, but is not limited to, acts of discrimination, bullying and harassment based on a
student's race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic
group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual
orientation, gender (defined to include gender
identity or expression), or sex. Each Mohonasen
school has a Dignity Act Coordinator (see box)
trained to address issues in areas protected by the
law. See more at www.mohonasen.org.
As required by the EPA, school districts must annually notify parents/guardians and employees of the
availability of the asbestos management plan and
planned or in-progress inspections, re-inspections,
response actions, and post-response actions.
Mohonasen conducts periodic surveillances every
six months and a re-inspection every three years.
The Mohonasen management plan is available for
review during normal business hours by contacting
Joseph Mayo at 356-8228. There are currently
construction projects scheduled that will disturb
asbestos containing building material.
Pursuant to the federal education legislation No
Child Left Behind, Mohonasen must disclose to
military recruiters, upon request, the names,
addresses and telephone numbers of high school
students. The district must also notify parents of
their right, and the right of the child, to request
that the district not release such information
without prior written parental consent. Parents
(or students 18 or older) wishing to exercise their
option to withhold their consent to the release of
the above information to military recruiters are
asked to sign and return a form, which is available
in the high school office.
