Norton System Works 2001
1. Double-click the Norton SytemWorks desktop icon to launch the utility suite.
NOTE: This suite is a collection of utilities for the general maintenance and virus
protection of your computer.
2. Upon launch the following screen will appear…
3. Click on the Norton Utilities button to open the following screen…

4. Click on the small round circle by each sub-category to display the options for
that particular sub-category. Reference Table 1 for a list of each sub-category and
a description of the function of the particular category.
5. Click on the Norton AntiVirus button. The following screen will appear if you
have not yet created Rescue Disks. You should create a rescue disk set using the
following procedure.

6. Double-click on Rescue Disks in the Status items list.
7. Click Yes in the resulting dialog box.

8. Review the types of rescue disk one may create. Click on Continue.

9. If you do not have a ZIP disk installed in your computer, you will be limited to
creating a Basic Rescue diskette set in which case you should click on Basic
Rescue then click on Create.

10. Alternately, if you have a ZIP disk installed in your computer, click on Norton
Zip Rescue then click on Options.
11. Recommend you leave Rescue Files selections at default settings.

12. Configure Zip Settings as follows unless your system cannot boot from your ZIP
disk in which case you should select Safe Mode. NOTE: Typically a CMOS
setting controls whether or not your system can boot directly from your ZIP disk.
13. It is safest to select Full Format for the Format Settings then click OK.

14. Click Create to begin the Rescue Disk creation process.
15. Click Yes to temporarily turn off your virus scanner.
16. Label disk media and insert as prompted then click OK.

17. Be patient while rescue disks are created.
18. Close any other open applications, then click Restart to conduct a confidence test
of the rescue disk set just created.

19. Be advised that when booting from the rescue disk set, system boot-up and
execution time will be far longer than normal; therefore, be extremely patient and
wait for the system to display the Rescue Disk Wizard dialog box before shutting
down your system.
20. To shut down your system, click on Start / Shutdown and remove any disks
inserted into your system.
21. Remember to label the Rescue Disks newly created and store them in a safe
place.

Optimize Performance
Speed Disk – Organizes data stored on your hard drive to reduce
the time required to retrieve the data.
Norton Optimization Wizard – Optimizes the Windows registry etc.

Norton System Doctor – Continuously monitors system for problems.
UnErase Wizard – A utility used to unerase files and/or directories that
were unintentionally deleted.
Norton Disk Doctor – Repairs allocation errors in files and/or directories
stored on your hard drive.
Norton WinDoctor – Detects/repairs errors in the Windows registry file.
System Maintenance
System Information – Displays technical information about your system.
Norton Wipe-Info – Thoroughly erases deleted files such that they are
truly un-recoverable for security purposes.
Image – Creates a snapshot of the directory/file structure on your hard
hard drive to facilitate the recovery of said structure in the
event it becomes corrupted.
Norton File Compare – A utility used to compare two files to determine
what differences if any exist between the files.
Norton Diagnostics – Diagnoses your system for possible problems with
the hardware components of your system.
Registry Maintenance
Norton Registry Editor – A utility to edit your Windows registry file.
This utility should only be used by the technical professional
as the risk potential is high for damaging your system when
used by the lay person.
Norton Registry Tracker – A utility used to track and restore changes
made to the Windows registry file.
NOTE: It is recommended that you execute Norton Speed Disk and Norton WinDoctor
every three months…other utilities should be used on an as needed basis.

Note: Click on individual Status items in the right-hand status window
to display a description and more details about each status item.
Email Status -– Displays a summary of the status of your email account(s).

An Internet connection used to purchase live on-line technical support for
computer problems.

An on-line program used to conduct a security analysis of your system.
Establish a live Internet connection. Minimize the connection display, then click on the
Norton SystemWorks desktop icon to launch Norton SystemWorks. Finally click on one
of the above five options available on the Internet.

Click on Ask your own Norton System Works Question to proceed.
In the resulting Expertcity display, click on the option you desire.

LiveUpdate
LiveUpdate is used to automatically update your SystemWorks programs as well as virus
definitions etc. Have a live Internet connection then launch LiveUpdate one of these
ways:
1. Using the Start menu, navigate to LiveUpdate through AntiVirus or through Norton
Utilities.

2. You can also access LiveUpdate through the SystemWorks console by clicking on the
LiveUpdate button.
When LiveUpdate launches, you should see a screen much like this:
Click next to see what updates are available. LiveUpdate will download a list of updates.
This should not take long.

The updates that are available will be listed. Choose the updates you would like to apply
to your computer by checking or unchecking the boxes to the left. Recommend that you
apply any available update. Click next to begin downloading your updates.
Be patient while your updates download.

If you chose to update AntiVirus, LiveUpdate may automatically display this message
near the end of your update download.
Once LiveUpdate has downloaded updates, it will install them. Be patient while this
finishes.
You may need to reboot. Close all other programs, then click OK.
SystemWorks is now up to date on your machine. Be sure to update your AntiVirus every
week or two and regularly update your other SystemWorks files.
