It was the last stronghold held by the Jewish Zealots who refused to submit to Roman occupation. Unique geological conditions then combined to form the Dead Sea, a sea that is more than eight times as salty as the oceans. Over the years, the silent desert around this sea became a refuge for spiritual escapists. Now, the Dead Sea is once again a top destination for those seeking healing and peace of mind. 421 Cavitt Avenue • Trafford PA 15085 412-373-9047 • [email protected] JEWISH HERITAGE TOURS TO: ISRAEL, ITALY, CZECH REPUBLIC and MORE! For Israel, the water of the Jordan River is an absolute neccessity for drinking water and for irrigation. In the Torah, the Jordan River is mentioned several times as a source of fertility for Israel. It is here that Joshua and the tribes of Israel miraculously crossed into Jericho, and also the scene of many biblical battles. Initially its waters came from the local wells. However, as the population grew to several hundred thousand people, a large scale aqueduct was required to bring the water from a distance. The aqueduct was built in several phases, starting from King Herod. Seventy years later it was rebuilt; the second Temple stood for 420 years, until its destruction by the Romans, also on the ninth of Av, in 3829 (69 CE). Ever since, the 9th of Av has been a day of fasting and repentance—a day on which we mourn the destruction, and pray for the coming of Moshiach, when the third and final Temple will be restored to its place as the divine epicenter of the universe. Some 2,000 years ago, Tiberias was the center of Jewish study and the last seat of the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court of Jewish law). After enduring constant wars throughout the Middle Ages, the city was revived by an influx of kabbalists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The city's major attractions are the Kinneret, its natural hot springs and the graves of many historical luminaries.
