We are now offering a unique insight and a chance to “walk in the shoes of a person with dementia.” The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) is a 20-minute experience that undeniably changes the way we imagine life with dementia. The VDT was created by Second Wind Dreams, and tours are now conducted at Island Nursing Home. We are the only facility in the area that offers this compelling glimpse into the world of dementia. Since the start of the VDT at INH, more than 100 people have completed the tour. We have offered the tours in both June and October and plan to continue offering them every few months. New staff at INH are required to complete the tour after they are hired so they can better understand the struggles of some of our residents. Those that have completed the tour describe it as “eye opening” and “a game changer.” It is recommended for caregivers, family members, and anyone interested. For more information or to schedule a tour, contact Joan Bothwell at 348-6517 or [email protected]. The Purple Angel, a global symbol for dementia “They seem to understand a little better what it’s like to walk in their shoes.” -Joan Bothwell, Social Services Director on staff completing the VDT Resident Artists Raise Funds for Activities With the help of volunteer and artist Hillary Becton, a group of INH residents created a 2014 calendar to sell this past year. Each month featured the artwork of a member of the group. From the funds raised, they decided to purchase a 60-inch SmartTV for the Namaste Room and fellow residents in the Namaste Program. The new TV benefits those residents that have vision problems because it is bigger and easier to see. The group was so successful that they are working on a calendar for 2015! After a cold, long Maine winter, the sunshine just wasn’t cooperating! To help nudge spring along, a “Spring Fling” was planned. On Friday, April 25th, staff, residents, volunteers, and visitors came together for fun, games, and a silly photo booth. Despite Mother Nature’s unwillingness to cooperate, spring was in full-force at INH for a few hours. Dorothy Bakeman having fun with the Spring Fling photo booth “It was a day filled with laughter, fun, and silliness. A chance for us all to be kids again.” New interactive website for INH in 2014 Kate Rouleau, Public Relations and Marketing Director at INH, is currently working with Pulse Marketing Agency on redesigning the Island Nursing Home website. The new site will be ready in November and will be interactive, with frequently updated information The website will be a tool for families, the community, prospective residents, and volunteers to keep up with the busy, active residents and see all the great work that INH does. The URL for the website will be the same as the current site: www.islandnursinghome.org. -Becky Siebert, Residential Care Director The new website will offer the ability to: view INH’s Wish List send a message to a resident obtain frequent updates sign up for email from INH It will also feature: a “DONATE NOW” button and much more! 4 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Island Nursing Home and Care Center Donations received 7/1/13-6/30/14 In Memory of In Honor of FOUNDERS: ($5,000 and above) Anne SigmundMary A. The final product took a week of designing, painting, and assembling. Because the parade celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Deer Isle Bridge, the theme for this year’s float was “We were just babies when the bridge was built,” and our efforts yielded INH a Second Place ribbon! INH residents also attended Fishermen’s Day in Stonington and the Blue Hill Fair this summer. The residents enjoy getting out in the community and attending local events. The float designed by INH for the 2014 4th of July parade “Each time I visit my father, I am again so impressed and moved by the extraordinary respect, support and compassion you extend him.. and surely extend all of your residents each day.” -Daughter of resident Residents and staff both enjoyed the baby chicks that hatched at INH this September 587 N.
