Are You A Freeloader? - New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association
“The Voice of Veterinary Medicine in New Mexico”
Summer 2016
Are You A Freeloader?
It is a fact – most of the benefits that the New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association provides go to everyone,
regardless of whether you are a member or not. The Association works hard to promote veterinarians, to protect the
veterinary profession, and to educate the public about all of the functions veterinarians perform in our society. Notice
this does not say NMVMA member veterinarians. All veterinarians.
Did you know the NMVMA provided resources that helped Texas successfully argue a court case that would have
allowed for emotional damages for the loss of a dog? Did you know that if this court case had a different outcome, our
liability insurance would likely have gone up so much it would have put many of us out of business overnight? The
court did not limit the verdict to Association members – it applies to all veterinarians.
Did you know the NMVMA Legislative Committee, as well as our lobbyist, spent hundreds of hours in Santa Fe over
the last several years successfully preventing chiropractors from being able to treat animals without veterinary oversight?
And amending the Anti-Cruelty Bill to avoid harmful unintended consequences for veterinarians? And attempting to
strengthen our practice act to prevent anyone calling themselves a veterinarian from getting away with cruelty to animals
so heinous it would blacken the name of our entire profession? And increasing the penalty for practicing veterinary
medicine without a license so the District Attorney will be more likely to prosecute these cases? That the Association
was instrumental in getting the requirement to report controlled drug prescriptions to the Board of Pharmacy lifted? Did
you know none of this legislation applies only to NMVMA members? It applies to all veterinarians.
Did you know we employ Ms. Tamara Spooner as a part-time employee, even though she works tirelessly and more than
full time for the veterinarians in our state? Did you know that if you call our office with a question or request for help,
she will do what it takes to help you, and she will do so whether you are a member or not? She helps all veterinarians.
Did you know that the NMVMA VetList was founded by the NMVMA with grant money from the Department of
Health, and continues to be paid for and sponsored by the NMVMA? When you sign up to join the List it is not required
of you that you be an NMVMA member. It is open to all veterinarians.
Did you know that the NMVMA provides peer wellness resources for mental health and substance abuse issues? And a
Power of 10 program that helps newer graduates develop important life and leadership skills that add value to a practice?
And maintains a relief veterinarian list? And a calendar of CE events? And distributes important and often life-saving
public health information? And provides final exam survival kits to veterinary students from New Mexico? And
represents our state in the AVMA House of Delegates? Did you know we do all of this from a budget that is likely less
than that of your individual household? These services do not

just benefit NMVMA members. They benefit all veterinarians.
There are two ways you can support the NMVMA. First,
just join. Pay your dues. We don’t ask much, and our dues
are among the lowest in the country for a state veterinary
association. Ask your boss to do it for you. If you are a practice
owner, make this a benefit for your associates. Second, attend
Southwest Veterinary Symposium. Our income from this
meeting accounts for about 20% of our annual budget, and we

cannot afford to continue providing all of these services if we
do not get the income for this meeting. The amount of money
we get is directly related to the number of veterinarians from
our state that attend. We understand you have other options.
We understand there are a million ways to just get your hours
in for free. But there is no other way that allows you to attend
absolutely world-class continuing education, with nationally
known speakers, hands-on labs, and an atmosphere in which
someone greets you at the door every morning with a smile
and a piece of candy, while at the same time benefiting every
veterinarian in your state. Whether they
are a member or not.
Think about it for just a minute. Instead
of just tossing that renewal aside or in
the trash, consider that the Association
goes to bat for you every day. And we
will continue to do that as long as our
budget allows. But if you don’t put that
renewal in the mail instead of the trash,
someone else is paying us to do that for
you.

2016 Medical Plan Renewals Are Just Around the Corner.
ARE YOU READY?
At least 75% of the medical plans offered in the state of New Mexico will be renewing coverage beginning
in October of this year. Here are a few things you should know in order to ensure you are getting the plans
and medical expense coverages you desire.
•
Some insurance companies offering individual medical plans are asking for a 20-30% increase in rates for
2017. If approved, there is a possibility that small group medical insurance rates may be more cost effective
than individual medical plan rates.
•
Be sure to check whether your plan’s deductible is on a Plan Year or Calendar Year accumulation period.
Some medical insurance companies are changing this timeline at renewal and it could have a drastic effect on
your yearly Out-of-Pocket limits and exposure.
•
Many companies now offer online and mobile phone doctor “visits” as part of their plan features. If used
correctly, these new online services can eliminate the need to see or schedule an appointment with a primary
care physician for minor services such as prescriptions refills or treatments for minor ailments. Most of these
online services are a low or even no cost benefit to the member as part of their medical insurance plan.
•
Most insurance companies now allow businesses to offer multiple group medical plan options. If implemented
correctly, businesses can provide employees options to better meet their specific needs, and can potentially
lower premium costs for the employers.
•
All individual medical plans are now HMO in design but offer insureds urgent care and emergency room coverage when these services are required while traveling out of the state.
•
It’s important to understand the differences between individual medical insurance plans sold on and off the
New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (BeWellNM.com).
•
All individual medical plans (offered both directly from the insurance companies or from the Exchange) as
well as small group medical plans, have a built-in fee or commission for agents and brokers. Be sure to seek
the advice of an experienced agent or broker to help you through the renewal process. It won’t cost you anything more and will make the process less stressful.
Overall, as the Affordable Care Act continues to evolve, we will continue to see an increase in innovative
ways to decrease the overall cost of the program, helping to offset costs to employers and members.
Knowing and understanding the new laws , regulations and guidelines will not only increase member
satisfaction, but could also have a positive effect on your pocketbook. Now is the time to start exploring
what options are available and how they can benefit you or your business.

What Are You Reading This Summer?
Laura Hady, DVM reviews
The Harry Bosch Detective Series
by Michael Connelly
I enjoy reading the Harry Bosch series despite the grizzly crimes
described. Harry gets the criminal by old fashioned hardworking detective
work with attention to detail. Harry has a sordid upbringing, a tour
of duty in Vietnam, and a long climb up the ladder to detective in
Hollywood. Harry has a bittersweet personality, which comes out in
his selection of jazz music he plays at home and in his car and how he
interacts with his various partners. He always heads back to the murder
book and reads it page by page to look for missing details. He has been
on suspension and inspected by the internal affairs division. However, the
police commissioner considers him the best detective in the city. Bosch’s
ex-wife Eleanor is an ex FBI profiler. She is raising his daughter in Las
Vegas while working the poker tables at night. Harry does not want to be
an absent parent and this drives his inner thoughts.
Dr. Laura Hady is a New Mexico native who graduated from New Mexico
State University with a Bachelor’s in Animal Science in 1991. She went
straight to veterinary school and graduated from Colorado State University
in 1995. Dr. Hady spent 8 years practicing general veterinary medicine
and surgery. There she developed an interest for those animals with
arthritis, disc disease, weight problems and orthopedic issues. Dr. Hady became certified in animal
rehabilitation from the University of Tennessee in 2003. She has built her animal physical therapy
practice by using positive motivation, and current treatment modalities to accomplish the goals in the
recovery process. Dr. Hady is currently pursuing board certification through the American College of
Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation via the non-traditional practice route.
Your degree shouldn’t be a burden; it should be a springboard to follow your true calling and
make a difference in the world. But that doesn’t mean your wallet has to suffer.

The most recent Power of 10 meeting was held at Smith Veterinary Clinic in Santa Fe on Saturday April 23rd.
Dr. Julie Blossom made an outstanding and timely presentation on “Compassion Fatigue” which included information
about wellness, stress and suicide. Our first Power of 10 class which will “graduate” later this month, is an extraordinary
group of dedicated and energetic young veterinarians. It has been a privilege to get to know them, work with them, and
learn from them.
The NMVMA will be recruiting for the next Power of 10 class August 1-31, 2016. This is a free program,
available to NMVMA members, designed to enrich and develop future leaders. If you are a new graduate (out of
veterinary school fifteen years or less) or know of a new graduate, please visit the NMVMA website for more information.
The NMVMA would like to thank all of the following for their time, interest and talent in helping and
supporting a successful first year of Power of 10! We greatly appreciate their generosity.

NMVMA and Southwest Veterinary Symposium FAQ’s
How is Southwest Veterinary Symposium different from other CE conferences?
SWVS is a partnership between five member state Veterinary Medical Associations. The partnership
started as Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and then was later bought into by Arkansas and New Mexico. SWVS
is the only CE conference in the country in which 100% of the profits are redistributed back to the partner state
VMA’s rather than going to a for-profit organization.
Why did the partnership form?
At the time the SWVS partnership formed, there was considerable pressure from the large companies
sponsoring continuing education meetings to consolidate so they could sponsor and travel to fewer meetings,
while still getting in front of as many veterinarians as possible. Because it is the sponsorship dollars of these
companies that makes registration fees affordable, the state VMA’s responded to this request by not having state
association CE meetings in exchange for one large meeting in a central location.
Why did the NMVMA decide to join the partnership?
In a word, money. The NMVMA had, for many years, continued to struggle to put on a CE conference
for New Mexico veterinarians, but it was a hugely expensive endeavor, and the association was losing money they
couldn’t afford to lose every year. The NMVMA is a non-profit 501c6, and because of this, losses at a meeting
of this type do not help out the organization by being a promotional expense, or going against corporate profits
on a tax return. Instead, it was losing a considerable portion of its budget that it needed to provide services to
its members. After much thought and discussion, it was decided that the writing was on the wall, and it needed
another way to generate income for the organization.
How are the profits from SWVS distributed?
New Mexico is an equal partner in SWVS. Every year the total profits from the meeting are divided by
attendee, and the NMVMA gets a distribution based on how many veterinarians attended from New Mexico. For
this reason, New Mexico veterinarians attending SWVS very tangibly and directly affects the Association’s bottom
line.
Why can’t SWVS be held in New Mexico?
There are three major reasons SWVS can never be held in New Mexico. The first is that there is no venue
large enough to hold the meeting. The Albuquerque Convention Center does not have even half of the meeting,
lab or exhibit space needed to hold the over 4500 people that accompany the Symposium. Meetings would have
to be spread out in hotels all over the city, forcing people to travel between sessions to different locations, which
is logistically unrealistic. Second, while over 1500 veterinarians attend SWVS every year, over 1000 of these are
from Texas. The meeting largely relies on Texas veterinarians to generate the profit that is distributed to all of the
states, and if the meeting was held outside of Texas, the number of Texas veterinarians, and thus overall attendance
numbers and profits, would drop dramatically. Finally, as Texas was giving up the largest chunk of income by
abandoning their annual meeting to join SWVS, it is in the partnership agreement that the meeting will always be
held in Texas.
Why doesn’t the NMVMA want to provide CE to New Mexico veterinarians in New Mexico?
The NMVMA would love nothing more than to be able to hold a meeting the caliber of SWVS in New
Mexico, but it is just financially not practical to do so. We have many obligations to meet to serve our members,
and it is our responsibility to do what we need to do to meet these financial obligations. At this time, the only
way to do that is to be a part of the SWVS partnership. Last year this partnership generated almost $10,000 for the
Association, even though only 27 veterinarians attended from our state. Think what we could do if we doubled
our attendance!
The NMVMA has had a fabulous return on investment from its involvement in the SWVS partnership.
The Association even holds one of its annual Board of Directors meetings at the Symposium, so all our board
members get a chance to see the Southwest Experience. Everyone who goes wants to go back. We feel this has
been a win-win for the Association, as we could never afford to provide such an amazing conference for our
members on our own.
We understand that not everyone can afford to go to a major conference out of state every year. However,
if you are considering one this year, please consider SWVS, and give something back at the same time.
