Surgeon
By Melissa Burt, Wellness Center Member Services Coordinator
Proper nutrition and physical activity play a critical role as we get older. Millions of older adults are taking stock
of their health by hitting the gym for physical activity which helps keep their muscles strong and prevent many
health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Healthways SilverSneakers®
Fitness program is a National Wellness Program, targeted to adults 65+. It is a fun, energizing way to get the
activity you need to help you stay healthy and independent. Healthway Silver Sneakers has partnered with
several insurance companies to offer gym memberships and classes to Medicare eligible members. There is no
cost to the member. To qualify for the program you must be 65+ and have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare
Supplement plan that includes the Silver Sneakers progam. Hopedale Wellness Center will check your health
plan and see if you are eligible. Check out our beautiful walking track, gym floor, and pool liners!
Here are some helpful tips for staying active:
•Talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program
• Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, five or more days a week.
• Include strength training exercises in your regular workouts at least twice a week to improve and maintain muscular
strength and endurance.
• If you have difficulty with your mobility, perform moderate amounts of low-impact activities such as swimming, water
exercises or stretching.

HMC’s
State of
the Art
Hybrid
Angio
Suite
The Hopedale Medical Complex, in association with the Midwest
Vascular Institute, is excited to unveil a recent upgrade to its existing hybrid
angiography suite. The upgrade included the purchase and installation of a
new Toshiba CAS-880A Floor Mounted Five-Axis C-arm and CAT-880B
Hybrid Catheterization Table (pictured). The Five-Axis C-Arm is capable
of performing fluoroscopy, radiography, and digital fluorography and can
provide all clinical angles for diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The Hybrid Catheterization Table facilitates catheterization of cardiac,
cerebral, abdominal, and peripheral areas and can support open surgical
procedures such as bile duct exploration and intestinal stent placement.
The new Toshiba system replaces HMC’s original hybrid angiography
system, which was installed in 1994 and Vascular and Surgical was the
only hybrid angiography suite of its kind in central Illinois. With the
addition of this new equipment, HMC will continue to be at the forefront
of patient care.
CEO, Dr. Alfred Rossi noted that with this new suite
“[i]t’s all about doing the best thing for our patients. We
need to have the best of both worlds. We want to be able
to look at the patient and tell them they have a problem
that can be fixed with an interventional procedure
or a problem that can best be fixed with surgery, or
maybe we need to do both to get the best result.” With
the upgraded hybrid angiography suite, “[w]e can do
whatever we need to do as far as interventions go, plus
the necessary open surgical procedures without moving
the patient.” The upgraded room “allows us to do really
complicated open and closed vascular procedures. The
benefit to the patient is that everything is done in one
place at one time by one person. The key is to have
vascular surgeons who are trained to do that. We are
fortunate to have both Dr. Matt Rossi and Dr. Phil Rossi
at HMC.”

HMC Construction Update
M
uch has been accomplished at HMC’s hospital construction site since the last October when
ground was broken.
The summer construction weather was excellent after a very tough winter. The helipad was completed
and has been receiving landings since July. The interior of the Phase I portion of the project, which includes
five new hospital rooms, three Emergency Department rooms, a nurses’ station, six Ambulatory Surgery
suites, lobby and mezzanine, were 95% complete on October 20, 2014. Only the floor covering was left to
complete. Railroad Street will re-open before December 1st. CORE Construction expects that the State of
Illinois will be ready to inspect the completed Phase I to allow for patient occupancy by mid-December
2014. This will be a great day for HMC as we will be able to move our Emergency Department back to its
original location on Lincoln Street and open up four new beautiful, spacious patient rooms as well as the
new Ambulatory Surgery Department. The exact date of opening Phase I is unknown, so stay tuned. The
total cost of the renovation Phas I and II (and equipment) will be approximately $9 million. Phase II of the
project will start when the Phase I area is occupied. It is expected to be completed by mid-April 2015. New
furnishings will be moved to the entire building sometime around February 1, 2014, and we are on target
for a re-dedication/ribbon cutting around the first week of May, 2015.
Finally, a beautiful new angiography suite has been installed and is now open in the operating room
which replaces the existing unit which was installed in the late 1990’s. This investment of over $1 million in
this “hybrid OR suite” is a testament to HMC’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art medical care which
rivals big city hospitals. (See related story on page 3).
We sincerely appreciate the cooperation by our patients, residents, visitors, and employees during
the construction process. It will be well worth the inconvenience, I’m Sure!
Sincerely,
Mark Rossi, COO

Sweet & Sour Cucumbers w/Fresh Dill
1 servings | Total Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
• 2 cucumbers sliced as thinly as you can get them while leaving them intact
• 1 tablespoon salt • 1/2 small onion, thinly sliced (optional)
Dressing:
• 1/2 cup white vinegar • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh dill
• 2 tablespoons sugar • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Preparation:
After slicing cucumbers, sprinkle with salt and then let drain in
colander for at least 15 minutes to a ½ hour. Squeeze excess water
out without ruining the cucumber (don’t squeeze too hard!)
Make the dressing by combining the vinegar, fresh dill, sugar and
pepper. Taste and adjust accordingly.
Mix dressing with cucumbers and onion and let sit at least 15
minutes before. Serve chilled!
Cucumbers contain Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5,
Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium and Zinc. When applied topically, cucumber cools the blood and
eases facial swelling, which is why they are so popular in facial regimens.
Cucumbers are a great source of B vitamins and carbohydrates that can
provide an afternoon pick-me-up.
