It’s March but it sure does not feel like it (burr). I
have completed a couple boat project and the list is still
growing. I am now learning how much I don’t know about
standing rigging. Sometimes I wonder what I have gotten
myself into (I know that is what Carolyn is thinking). We
are looking forward to the CYCT Crab Feed cruise in Docton this month and I am amazed by the response we have.
I think Carolyn and I will have our hands full.

Commodore’s Comments
Greetings, CYCT Membership.
Today I decorated the house for St. Patrick’s Day. I don’t have a lot of St. Patty’s decorations, a few green carnations and shamrocks. But one tradition we have had in our house
is that the kids have built leprechaun traps. The idea is to lure the little leprechaun into
the trap by placing some gold rocks or some shoes, perhaps a rainbow under a box of
some sort… and simply to catch him. He always eludes the traps, however, then wreaks
havoc in the house; turning the toilet water green, leaving green footprints all over, messing up the furniture. One year he set the breakfast table for the kids, it looked really nice
with the exception of the dog food he poured instead of cereal. Now, Sampson would have been happy, but let
me tell you, Ruthie was NOT. She spruced up her trap that night, but again, no leprechaun.
Most days I want the kids to grow up. Some days I want them to slow down and enjoy the innocence of their
childhood. Today, I am hoping they ASK to start working on their leprechaun traps, because it’s more fun for me
than for them, I’m sure.
This week has been a tough week for members of our CYCT family. It has made me stop and quietly appreciate the
friendships that are going on within the club even more. What I have appreciated the most is the genuine concern
that goes on when someone is in need. I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
May this month bring you a little green beer, some corned beef and cabbage, hopefully some sunshine and the
blooming of a few bulbs. I leave you with this Irish Blessing:
An Old Irish Blessing
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
As I am writing this at 3:45am, “Top of the mornin’ to ya!”

Vice Commodore’s Comments
Februarys 29th is today. My memory is short, but I sure don't remember February 29th last
year. Did I miss something? February long or short seemed to be filled with challenges. How
about our poor Race Committee? Tatoosh had decided to get off of the dock and start doing more
winter racing. The good Lord had other ideas. The first race was our CYCT Gig Harbor, Windjammer Harbor Series #3. First of all our crew of one called and said he had to work. O.K. Joy and I
have double handed the boat many times, no big deal. So we got up early, and after looking out
the window thought no way.
We called Billy and said sorry,
we were not going to make it.
We did however pack our sail bags and head down to the
dock in hopes that things would change. Our boat was tied
up to the dock, in the marina. However it was rocking like it
was on anchor in a good wind out in the harbor. Two other
CYCT boats on the docks made the decision not to race that
morning also. We grabbed our hand held radio and headed
home where we could see our two committee boats trying to
set up the course. At one point Romeo Charlie called Juliet
and asked how it was going. Juliet came back "this really
#@*'s, but thanks for asking". Both were bouncing around
like little toy boats. Hats off to Billy and his crew for getting
the race in. Also, nice job to the five boats that finished the
race. The second race we had signed up for was the TTPYC Manzanita Buoy Race. Again the conditions were not what we would
purposely take our boat out in. Three Tree Point Yacht Club had two boats start that race and only one finish. Congratulations to
First Dance for taking first place. They said they were so far out in front they couldn't see any of the boats behind them. Should
we tell them there weren't any?
February did start out on a fun note, with our chili cook off cruise. Nice job to the VanRavensway's for throwing a fun filled
evening. Lots of great chili, with a dead heat tie for first place. Good thing the crew of Grace E showed up to help us out. After
being kind enough to taste all of the entries, we had a tie breaker. Joy and I arrived at Dock Street Marina on Friday. By Saturday at noon we were still the only boat from CYCT there. As we looked out on the water we thought "this is the loneliest cruise
ever". Then the boats began arriving. We ended up with four boats at Dock Street, and one at Delin (they need a new compass,
I think they got lost). Thanks to Sirena Gorda, Discovery, Stelia Marie and First Dance for joining us. Next is the Crab Feed Cruise,
YUMMY!
Well, it really isn't too hard to say goodbye to this month. It has really brought us a kind of nasty environment. There was
plenty of high winds, snow and rain. It also brought us a few days of sunshine to help keep us all sane. I enclosed a photo of
Commencement Bay showing the sky blue salt water on one half, and the silky river run off water on the other half. Even the
Bay is confused, but spring is just around the corner.
See you all soon,
Gary Ballentine

Rear Commodore’s Comments
February was an interesting month. I spent most of it gone on a two-week vacation skiing, so I missed a lot of fun CYCT activities! Now back to the important life activity….Sailing! The month started out with the CYCT chili cook-off cruise to Dock Street
Marina. The weather for this event was actually dry! Lots of boats attended, and there
were five great chilies to sample. No candidates for the rubber chicken award yet! A
big thanks to Brock and Janice VanRavenswaays for hosting.
Next was our general meeting on February 13th, which I missed as well. So, March is here, starting off with the
Crab Cruise the weekend of March 10th. I plan to have OBSESSION there for it’s maiden cruise! (Finally got that
furnace installed so my wife Kit has heat!) If you have never attended the club’s Crab Cruise you owe it to
your taste buds to do so. Billy and Soo Carter must have crab pots out from Olympia to the Canadian border
catching enough crab for this event. Also, no racing this month, but the next race is the CYCT Spring Singlehand on April 7. Also, the Windseeker Wednesday night race series starts on April 11. It should be fun!
Carve those waves!

Drive or sail over for just the day, or stay the weekend. To help with the cost of Crab and Oysters the Club is asking
for $5 per person or $10 per family. To help us know how many critters to get please RSVP to the below email so
we can keep everyone happy.
If you plan to stay at the dock there is a nightly park fee for the night. There is no electricity on the dock or in the
park so please make any necessary adjustments to compensate for this.
We plan to have the Fire pit going and two BBQ’s will be available (so bring your own meat if you are not fond of
seafood). The Club will provide the main stuff such as the crab and oysters, plates, napkins, utensils, cups, coffee,
hot chocolate, and eggs.
All you will need is a side dish or dessert to compliment the crab
feed and remember to bring omelet filling or other
breakfast item for Sunday morning.
Any extra crab crackers you can bring

FROM THE RACE CHAIR
March Race Report
I can’t remember a winter when the Corinthian Yacht Club of Tacoma flagged boats have excelled as well as this winter. It
started with Winter Vashon with Slick winning class H, Flim-Flam a first in class G, Gardyloo with a second in E. In class D we
had Melange with a 3rd and Grace E with a 4th. In the NFS class Tatoosh placed a solid 3rd. Next up Duwamish Head with Slick
with another first place finish in H and Flim-flam with yet another first in G…WOW! And their supporting cast Melange taking a
second in D, Jeopardy a class D 4th and Gardyloo with a class E 4th.
It didn’t stop. My favorite race (not), the cold and fluky Toliva Shoal Race had Slick and Flim-Flam both with first place
class wins, Gardyloo a class E second and in class D Grace E placing third. Hope we can keep it going. What an incredible start.
Next and last race in the South Sound Series is March 17 th the Gig Harbor Yacht Club Islands Race. March is also the
month of the Center Sound Series sponsored by the Corinthian Yacht Club Seattle, a three race series, March 3 rd Blakely Rock,
March 10th Scatchet Head and March 24th Three Tree Point. I hope our racers continue our winter trend.
Next Corinthian Yacht Club of Tacoma event is April 4 th at the CYCT clubhouse Tyee II with a seminar on the RRS
(Racing Rules of Sailing) and basic “how to” on racing for the first time racer or the 1000 th time racer. There should be something
for everyone. The Spring Singlehand Race is April 7 th and for 2012 it has a set course, a little more distance and a four-hour time
limit. Windseekers starts April 11th, letting the fun begin.

Gig Harbor race
Well…the weather didn’t cooperate for increased attendance. Racing in Gale warnings is not for the
weak and we had a few DNS’s and a few more promises that didn’t materialize. However we managed a 60%
increase in attendance from Quartermaster, which was held in mere small-craft warning conditions.
The start had a bit of an ominous beginning beyond just the wind and sea state. When we contacted
Vessel Traffic they stated that there was a 100-yard quarantine around the vessel “Green Point” anchored by
the Blair Waterway. The message was given with a sense that they really wanted no boat to violate this rule.
The thought in my mind was one of a ship with Military hardware aboard. On channel 68 when I gave the final
instructions to the fleet I relayed Vessel Traffic’s “Green Point” request. Luckily our first mark on this race is the
Hylebos Buoy therefore the fleet should easily leave the Freighter in question well clear
The “Green Point” all during the day gave wind direction, wind strength reports and their Anchor dragging report. We learned they had 9 shots down (90 feet per shot, 810 feet of anchor chain) and where dragging
with engine on and requested to drop another shot.
Now back to the race. At the start all was clear beating towards the Hylebos with Gardyloo taking an
early lead in 30 knots of wind. As the boats rounded the Hylebos and sheets were eased they flew towards Gig
Harbor. In Dalco Passage they had a bit of a land mass shadow dropping wind speeds a bit, but they got
slammed when their bows poked out around Point Defiance. They made the mark at Gig Harbor in short order
and the reach to the next mark, Manzanita Buoy was a bit more full as they piled on the speed. This is the leg
that let Gordon and his crew on Les Chevaux Blanc overhauled Blown Away II. However, maybe the toughest
leg of the race was yet to come, the final beat from Manzanita to the finish line off Browns Point.
We saw Gardyloo’s lead shrink to Jeopardy on this leg but Jeopardy couldn’t reel-in the Gardyloo giving
Gardyloo line honors but Jeopardy won on corrected by 83 seconds. It was that final beat that gave them the
win. Third to finish was Forrest German and the crew of Blue Moon crossing with great panache. Fourth to
cross was Les Chevaux Blanc, they seemed to be enjoying the day and well they should winning Class II and correcting to first in fleet by 1.4 seconds over Jeopardy. Blown Away II crossed the line fifth and corrected to
fourth in fleet. And they didn’t make the RC wait for long to end this one. Elapsed time for Blown Away II was 2
hours 44 minutes and 18 seconds. Look at the Velocity Made Good numbers! Honestly I think those that competed were all winners. Races like these are more of a celebration of life.
Now back to the Green Pointe, upon return to Tyee we noticed the Green Point a car hauler out of Mobile Alabama off the Tyee Marina breakwater. Wow! If they had dropped anchor near the Blair Waterway they
had dug a furrow about a 1000 yards long. Then later that night we heard that there might have been murder
aboard. That explained the quarantine.
Page 13

The RC once again did great work in very trying, wet, ugly, cold conditions. Big thanks to Gary, Greg,
Don, Dan, Dana, Jerry and Soo. They made it a lot easier than it could have been. Next race the RC wants a
drifter.

March Report
We had a great time at Delin Docks! Thank you for everyone who came and shared
their Chili and side dishes. I know the crew of Gardyloo and Grace E especially
loved the hot food after a long day of racing! The Ballentine's took first place for
the best chili, followed by the Crone's and the Bessmer's. Many Valentine gifts were
also taken care of with prizes.
The Crab Feed at Dockton is just around the corner. Check this Mainsheet for a flyer. This is one of our most expensive cruises, so we are asking $5 per person or $10
per family to help offset expenses. The Crones have some great family fun planned
for the occasion, and Soo has graciously volunteered to collect our critters at a great
price! Please thank her as she goes quite a distance to buy them.
We will need a "crab" count soon, so RSVP with Rob and Carolyn as soon as possible!

we really hope you are) contact the Crones and let them know so they’ll buy enough crab. Email: [email protected] or give them a call at 253-951-9402. We’ll have a fire pit and two BBQ’s should be a great time. More info in the current Mainsheet.
Second: April 4th is the date for the Rules of Racing Seminar which will be given by our Race Chair,

Third: The Spring Single-hand Race is April 7th, starts and finishes off of Tyee Marina; see the race book at
CYCT.com for more info.
Forth: Windseeker Racing starts April 11th! This will be the Spring Series and will go for five races. Each
