A street parade is an indispensable part of any world-famous festival including Brazil's samba festival. Nothing is better than a street parade to entertain the eyes of audience and quickly set a festive mood. However, there is something that sets the parade of the Hi Seoul Festival 2008 apart from others, and that is the unique combination of ancient tradition and the participation of the local citizenry. Traditional icons such as the large statue of the legendary unicorn-lion that is believed to ward off evil spirits by swallowing fire, a grand marionette puppet delivering the message that everyone is the king of this festival, and san-daehi add profound meaning and excitement to the festival. Moreover, the Manmindaerorak parade is an open event that does not separate the performers from the audience, demonstrating that the Hi Seoul Festival is truly an event for all citizens. Everyone is invited to join the parade and share in the festivities.. ! 5IQV8ZWOZIU[ May Palace In the Name of Festival – Build Dreams and Connect Hearts Sejong Sejong Center Center for for the the Sejong SejongCenter Centerfor forthe the Sejong Sejong Center Center for for the the Performing Performing Arts Arts Performing PerformingArts Arts Performing Performing Arts Arts Kyobo Kyobo Building Building Kyobo KyoboBuilding Building Kyobo Kyobo Building Building “May Palace”, a digital palace to be created in Seoul Plaza, embodies the theme of the spring festival. The coronation of King Sejong, the greatest king of the Joseon Dynasty, is reborn as a dramatic performance. Besides the coronation itself, this event will feature the traditional narye ritual (a special ritual to ward off evil spirits), taepyeonggunmu (a court dance depicting the king and queen wishing peace and well-being upon all) staged by a 40-member troupe, and a changsa (a song performed to dance and instrumental music at court banquets of the Joseon Dynasty). “The Coronation: King Sejong the Great” will entertain your family and educate your children about Korea's history and traditions. What’s so special? King Sejong, one of the greatest kings of Joseon Dynasty, built an ideal society. This year’s reproduction of King Sejong’s coronation is much more than the replication of a formal ceremony, it represents the spirit of King Sejong’s effort to establish an ideal society based on Neo-Confucianism, and is well portrayed through ceremony, music, and clothing. The Narye ritual, coronation, and Haryeyeon banquet for King Sejong are much more than simply replications of the past. They are performances representing the citizens of Seoul's hope to expel all bad luck and bring in peace and good luck. Main Program Program Pre-event Narye ritual Coronation Haryeyeon banquet Traditional Korean music performance by the ROK Army (ROKA) chitadae band Gyedong Narye (rite of exorcism): The ritual of removing sundry evil spirits, in which men masquerading as bangsangsi, drummers, and flagmen (aged 12 to 16 years old) circle around the Palace, playing music instruments, and wield whips on the winter solstice. Its purpose is to exorcise evil spirits and misfortune from the palace and the four gates. This ritual, taking place before the coronation ceremony, captures the wish for a great future king. Coronation of King Sejong the Great • Cho-eom: Court officials line up according to ranks. • Jung-eom: The formally attired king takes his seat on the royal throne, protected by royal guards at his side. • Sam-eom: The king gets in the royal palanquin, and enters Geunjeongjeon hall. • Gukgungsabae: All officials bow deeply four times. • Announcement of a decree recording the accession • Samgodu: All officials kneel and bow three times. • Sanho: All officials cheer "Cheon-se, Cheon-se, Cheoncheon-se" to hail the new king. • Gukgungsabae: All officials bow deeply four times. • Yepil: The ceremony comes to an end and the king steps down from the royal throne and exits the court. Can there be a better stage for a concert than the spring night air filled with floral fragrances, the gorgeous scenery of a palace, and excellent classical music? The Goong & Concert is put on to give Seoul citizens an impressive precursor to Hi Seoul Festival 2008 Spring. The spring night air and palace combine to create a magical time for all. Program Verdi, <La Forza del Destino> overture Giuseppe Verdi's opera <La Forza del Destino> depicts a tragic tale of love, hate, revenge and fate. The popular overture is comprised of various themes from the opera, beginning with the foreboding brass opening, which foreshadows a tragic ending. Subsequent themes often contain a dark underlying motif that casts a shadow over the destiny of the characters involved. Puccini, 'O soave fanciulla (Oh gentle maiden)' from <La Boheme> Puccini’s Opera <La Boheme> is an opera in four acts based on Scenes de la vie de Boheme by Henri Murger. 'O soave fanciulla (Oh gentle maiden)' is a love duet for Rodolfo and Mimi about the joy and flutter of their newfound love in Act . Tchaikovsky, Symphony No.4, 1st & 4th Movement Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony is one of the most popular and well-known masterpieces. Due to it's characteristics of 'human life and destiny', the symphony is frequently compared to Beethoven's Fifth. Attractive melodies, flamboyant timbre and exquisite orchestrations beautifully blend and flow throughout the entire piece. ! The original double stage of “The Last Empress“ is designed to rotate for a variety of spectacular effects. This time, however, the musical will be performed in the palace without any artificial arrangements. Lighting and other devices will be used minimally. Queen Min, her ladies-in-waiting, and the Crown Prince usually stroll on an artificial set, but in this version they will walk in the actual palace, adding realism to the musical. In the royal wedding scene and the battle scene, the seating area will turn into the stage, allowing the audience to feel as if they are sitting in the middle of a historical event. This realistic version of “The Last Empress“ gives the people of today the chance to be the hero and heroine in a musical performance that's much more than just a musical. ! Introduction Hi Seoul Festival ■ World Festival Created by Seoul Seoul is a world-class city in terms of scale and population. Seoul successfully hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988 and the FIFA World Cup Finals in 2002, and has a time-honored history and a beautiful natural environment. The Hi Seoul Festival is a venue to let the world know the attractiveness of Seoul and reinvigorate the pride and energy of Seoul so that the city can leap forward towards a brighter future. The names of world renowned cities like New York, Paris, and London are more famous than the countries they are in. And the Rio Carnival of Rio de Janeiro and the Munich Oktoberfest are loved more dearly than their host cities. In 2008, the Hi Seoul Festival will set a new global standard for city festivals. ■ Festival where Tradition Mingles with Future Seoul is the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, which lasted longer than any other Korean dynasty, and had the most splendid culture in Korea’s 5000-year history. Seoul is also a fast growing, future-oriented city. Seoul has five Joseon-period royal palaces, which are a source of infinite cultural treasures, as well as numerous sophisticated office buildings containing world class IT companies making rapid progress in digital technology. The miracle is that the “palace,” a historical space, can come to life through the technology of the future! This is the wonder that we will see in Hi Seoul Festival 2008 Spring. ū Festival for the 10-Million Seoulites Marking its sixth anniversary this year, the Hi Seoul Festival has grown to become a world-class festival attracting an increasing number of participants each year. One of the most notable characteristics is that Hi Seoul Festival is truly a Seoulites’ festival that encourages citizens’ active participation. In the vision of the Hi Seoul Festival 2008, you are the master and the king. ū Festival to Feel Nature Usually a city festival is held with the specialty items and environmental factors of a city as the theme. However, the theme of the Hi Seoul Festival is the entire city. The four-season programs of the Hi Seoul Festival 2008 will show the world the diversity and colorful culture, as well as other aspects of Seoul that continuously change in each season.
