soul infused jazz - Typhanie Monique
SOUL INFUSED JAZZ Typhanie Monique has achieved international status as a rising star vocalist by immersing herself in her true passion. Versed in a wide range of genres and influences including jazz, funk, hip-hop, pop and improvised freestyle, the soulful-voiced chanteuse, bandleader and songwriter has earned a reputation as a fearless boundary-crosser and a natural born frontwoman with superb scatting chops and well-honed emcee skills. Since her Chicago debut more than a decade ago, Typhanie has held court at famous jazz clubs and major music festivals throughout the world, leading legendary groups such as the critically acclaimed Typhanie Monique & Neal Alger Duo, the T. Monique Quartet, SUMO, Peking Turtle and Mr. Egg Germ. An independent recording artist, Typhanie has made three standout CDs as a leader, each featuring Alger prominently on guitar. Her first, Intrinsic (Blujazz Records), captures the organic duo’s soul-infused jazz flavor in an intimate studio setting. The CD received national radio play, got the attention of the jazz press and landed the duo their first national touring opportunities. Monique and Alger took a different approach with their second CD release, In This Room (Tyme Records), collaborating with world-class musicians such as Tom Kennedy (Dave Weckl Band), Ernie Adams (Al Di Meola) and Brazilian artist Paulinho Garcia while staying true to the duo’s eclectic vibe with original compositions, contemporary favorites and jazz standards. Publicized internationally via radio, In This Room garnered rave reviews in some of the world’s most highly respected music publications (including jazz authority DownBeat magazine) and even made the preliminary voting round for a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category. One of the CD’s most requested tracks, “Smile,” was considered by the Grammy Academy for R&B Urban/Alternative Song of the Year. Typhanie’s third disc, Yuletide Groove (Tyme Records), embraces an all-inclusive jazz family holiday vibe. Like a Christmas stocking stuffed with fresh arrangements of songs both secular and sacred, this festive package features such special guests as Hammond B3 organ hero Tony Monaco and cutting-edge hip hop beat-box specialist JAQ. An invitation to teach and perform in Moscow, Russia, helped launch Typhanie on her international solo journey. She has played with some of Russia’s top jazz musicians — including saxophonist Oleg Kireyev and pianist Vladimir Nesterenko — and performed in Moscow’s finest jazz clubs. Typhanie has taught jazz vocals, music business and the art of scat during an extended summer workshop at the Moscow College of Improvised Music, a life-changing experience for her that opened the door to the fertile European jazz scene. She looks forward to her future travels and returning to Russia and beyond as she continues to make her presence known in the international jazz community and pursues her bold artistic vision as an innovative performer and dedicated educator. Looking to the future, Typhanie plans to continue collaborating with singers, songwriters and instrumentalists across all genres in both studio and performance settings. She also strives to help herself and others like her break through the gender barriers that frequently confront female jazz musicians. Typhanie made a bit of history recently when she took charge as hostess presiding over the monthly professional jam session at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. One of her favorite current projects is the Chicago-based Booty Movement Coalition, a large freestyle world/funk ensemble where she can focus on the true art of improvising. JazzTimes magazine has described Typhanie’s vocal sound as a modern-day Sarah Vaughan with iridescent traces of Lena Horne. Others have compared her to Minnie Ripperton, Chaka Kahn, Diana Krall and Eykah Badu. www.tmonique.com CONTACT INFO - SYD DANIELS - [email protected] - 773-759-9149 SOUL INFUSED JAZZ “Clearly, Typhanie Monique does not subscribe to a nostalgist’s view of jazz singing. The voice—gauzy and supple—rides a fine line between jazz and funk, elegantly merging both genres and a few more, as well.” “Monique cuts no corners when it comes to jazz technique, producing freewheeling, airborne scat singing. High – register cries, fast-running riffs, rhythmically volatile phrases—it all came into play, reaffirming Monique’s fearlessness.” Howard Reich, Jazz Critic for the Chicago Tribune – April ‘09 “The next major jazz vocalist coming out of Chicago. … some of the most convincing and deeply felt scat singing any female vocalist is offering in Chicago.” “She affirmed that not all of today's jazz singers are content to dwell on saccharine love songs. In an eclectic assortment of originals and covers, Monique applied top-notch jazz singing to poetic social commentary.” Howard Reich, Jazz Critic for the Chicago Tribune - March/April ‘07 “Expected, and delivered: solid soul-jazz vocals from Monique that suggests both Sarah Vaughan and Minnie Riperton.“ Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes “Typhanie pours in the soul, a honey-voiced chanteuse. …words dissolve into scat that would make Ella smile. ...or her ability to make you feel like a windblown leaf on the urgent zephyr of her voice, it’s all about connecting with you and making you understand just how great it can be.“ Michael Sandow, Forest Park Post “Typhanie's vocals are an array of bright colors painted on top of 10 beautiful instrumental landscapes.” KAOS Radio 89.3FM “Chicago native deserving of much wider attention… Suggesting a modern spin on Sarah Vaughn accented with iridescent traces of Lena Horne.” JazzTimes “… brings a bright soprano voice to the stage with heartfelt passion and musical accuracy. Her expressiveness indicates a rising star and will no doubt result in the nomination of this album to this year’s top ten list.” Jim Santella, Cadence Magazine “… powerful lead vocalist and songwriter… well-crafted songs never runs the risk of falling into mere cliché’.” Peter Quinn, Jazzwise www.tmonique.com CONTACT INFO - SYD DANIELS - [email protected] - 773-759-9149 SOUL INFUSED JAZZ Midwest venues West Coast venues The Jazz Kitchen, Indianapolis, IN Lunaria, LA, CA The Dakota, Minneapolis, MN Enrico's, San Francisco, CA Finale, St. Louis, MO SoHo, Petaluma, CA The Sheldon Concert Hall, Stl., MO Schneider Art Museum, Ashland, OR FireFly, Ann Arbor, MI Avalon Bar & Grill, Talent, OR The Acorn Theater, Three Oaks, MI Saugutuck Performing Arts Center Baker's Lounge, Detroit, MI Pacchia, Dayton, OH Night town, Cleveland, OH The Greenwich, Cincinnati, OH The Blue Wisp, Cincinnati, OH Chicago Venues The Jazz Showcase The Green Mill Andy’s Jazz Club McAnnich Arts Center Penninsula Hotel The Morse Theater S.P.A.C.E.
