grapevines. All of our one-year vines
are grown on raised beds covered with
black, biodegradable plastic. Each row
is supplied with water and nutrients
by trickle irrigation. Soil moisture is monitored with the use of tensiometers to
ensure that the vines are never stressed. The warm soil conditions beneath the
plastic, accompanied by an abundant supply of water and nutrients, ensures
ideal conditions for plant growth and root development. These vines are well
prepared for planting and vigorous growth in the spring.

FOR THE home grower
To assist our customers with their planting decisions, we have put together two
categories - Hybrid and European Vinifera. Each category consists of red and
white options, from which you may pick two. If you like red wine, maybe go for
Marquette and Marechal Foch. A lover of white? How about a Riesling and a
Chardonnay? Not sure? Go for one of each!
We also have some pre-selected groupings that consist of some of our customers’
favorite plants and are appropriate for the home gardener.
With proper care and site selection, these plants will produce nice wine, table or
juice grapes. Wine collections were compiled to yield 10 gallons of wine. Seedless
grapes are red, white and blue. Our Juice Collection will produce seeded table
grapes that may be used for delicious purple and white grape jelly and juice!

AMERICAN VARIETIES
ALDEN________________________ Price Group C | Blue, Black | 5
Alden produces strikingly large, oval, blush red berries that are firm and meaty
with a slight Muscat flavor. The fruit quality of Alden is pure vinifera with no
foxy flavor. The berries are prone to cracking, but the vines are so productive
that lots of berries still remain after damaged ones are removed. Pruning and
cluster thinning are required to prevent over-cropping. Several people report
the ability to make a white Muscat wine with Alden, due to its Muscat flavor.
SOLD OUT
Alwood______________________ Price Group C | Blue, Black | 5
Alwood is similar to Concord in appearance with larger berries and a
pronounced labrusca aroma that perfumes the air. Vines are very productive,
have above-average disease resistance and grow well in a variety of soils. Perfect
for market baskets, juice, jellies, or fruity wine.
SOLD OUT
AMERICA_____________________ Price Group C | Blue, Black | 4
America produces delicately flavored black fruit, rich in sweetness when fully

dry wines in warmer regions.
BETA__________________________ Price Group C | Blue, Black | 3
Beta is an extremely winter-hardy grape and is a very dependable producer. It
is grown in a variety of soils, but must have good drainage. Shelter from winter
winds is recommended. Beta is mainly grown for fruit production in home

and twisted trunks. Best used for juice, jams & jellies, rarely used in wines.
BLUEBELL____________________ Price Group C | Blue, Black | 3
Bluebell is a small Concord-type variety that is winter-hardy to -30F. A blueseeded table grape, very fruity and mildly labrusca flavored. Perfect for red juice,

Concord is the most famous American grape with vigorous, hardy and productive
vines that produce medium-sized clusters bearing large, blue-black berries.

candy. Concord is used for kosher wines or as a varietal or blender for sweet
wines. Available in both own-rooted and grafted.

mild flavor. This slip-skin variety has a tender skin and juicy, sweet flesh. Of
the labrusca types, it has the best fruity notes and the least labrusca character.

to make wines including dry, sweet, and ice wine, but is famed for its spicy,
sparkling wines.

used for home and market.
ISABELLA______________________ Price Group B | Blue, Black | 5
Isabella blooms mid- to late-season, producing bluish black fruit in large,
well-formed clusters. The lustrous, green, ample foliage makes it an attractive
ornamental. The fruit is slip-skin with a tender yellow-green flesh. Isabella can
be used to make a varietal red wine, sparkling wines, and is used as a table grape.
SOLD OUT

vigorous and productive and ripens early with high acidity, but can produce a

than Concord, and makes an excellent juice as well.
MOORE’S DIAMOND_____________ Price Group B, H | White | 5
Moore’s Diamond is a cross between Concord and Iona. The fruit resembles
Niagara with smaller berries. Diamond is one of the few white American
varieties that has been used to produce a sweet or dry table wine. Dry Diamond
wines have notes of green apple, lemon, and mineral that pair well with seafood,
light pasta, or cheese & crackers. Sweet Diamond wines have pineapple and
tropical fruit flavors – perfect for a summer picnic, poolside, served with fruit,
poultry, or seafood. Also desirable as a table grape, though the skins may crack
during wet seasons. Available in both own-rooted and grafted.

strawberry-like flavor. Moderately vigorous plants with small to medium-sized,

Sauvignon Blanc is a vigorous variety that makes aromatic white wines. Bud
break is mid-season and maturity is early, relative to most vinifera. It is very
susceptible to powdery mildew and black rot.
SHIRAZ________________________ Price Group G | Blue, Black | 7
Shiraz produces small- to medium-sized clusters of blue-black berries that ripen
mid-season. Wines made from Shiraz are rich in body, tannin and color. The
26
wines have a wide range of flavor depending on the climate and soils where the
grapes were grown. Aroma characteristics can range from violets to berries,
chocolate, espresso and black pepper.
Tannat______________________ Price Group G | Blue, Black | 7
Tannat is a blue-black grape that has small berries, large clusters, and ripens
late-season. This variety is thought to have originated in the Pyrenean area of
southwest France. It has late bud break. Tannat produces wines that are deeply
colored, perfumed, and have rich, firm tannins and a high alcohol content.
Varietal descriptors include black cherry, plum, tobacco, and chocolate. It is
also used as the base for Armagnac - a French brandy.

Tempranillo_______________ Price Group G | Blue, Black | 7
Tempranillo is an early ripening, black grape native to Spain. It is used to create
full-bodied, ruby-red wines with berry, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather and herb
aromas and flavors. Tempranillo wines can be consumed young or aged in oak
barrels for several years.
VIOGNIER_________________________ Price Group G | White | 7
Viognier is a white variety with full, spicy flavors reminiscent of the Muscat
grape and violets. Wines can vary from almost Riesling-like character to almost
Chardonnay-like character. Grapes should be picked when fully ripe. If picked too
early, the grape fails to fully develop the full extent of its aromas and tastes. When
fully ripe, the grapes have a deep-yellow color and produce wine with a strong perfume
and high alcohol content. Viognier pairs well with spicy food such as Thai cuisine.
ZINFANDEL__________________________ Price Group G | Red | 7
Zinfandel vines are quite vigorous and grow best in warm climates. The thinskinned, red grapes grow in large, tight bunches that are sometimes prone to
bunch rot. Zinfandel produces a red wine when mature or can be cold pressed to
make White Zinfandel. The taste of the red wine depends on the ripeness of the
grapes from which it is made. In cooler areas, raspberry is predominant, while in
warmer areas blackberry, anise and pepper are more common. White Zinfandel
pairs well with a massive variety of foods ranging from Cajun cuisine to seafood
entrees. Zinfandel pairs well with meats under a variety of cooking styles.
ZWEIGELT___________________________ Price Group G | Red | 6
This relatively recent cross of St. Laurent with Blaufränkisch (Lemberger)
displays the body and acidic nature of its parents. Widely grown in Austria,
where it was developed and is now the country’s most popular, dark-skinned
grape. Zweigelt ripens earlier than Blaufränkisch, but buds later than St.
Laurent. This combination can produce liberal yields. Zweigelt is said to be
among the most cold-hardy (vinifera) varieties and its ability to create good red
wines with some aging ability is catching the attention of cold-climate growers
outside Eastern Europe. Wines are deeply pigmented, light to medium-bodied
with cherry aromas and occasional hints of spice.

industry for a couple years. This variety produces a seeded grape with bright-red
skin color and large, attractive clusters. Victoria Red is recommended primarily
for fresh-fruit sales; however, it has also proven to have potential as a neutral

ARAPAHO (Thornless)___________________________ Zones 6-9
Royalty $ .10
Arapaho, released in 1993 by the University of Arkansas, is a thornless variety
that produces a medium-sized, firm, high-quality fruit over a four-week season.
Arapaho is on erect shoots that do not require a trellis, and bear on primocanes,
or the previous year’s growth. After harvest in summer, the canes that fruited
are cut back (or they will die back in fall naturally), and new shoots that
grow will fruit the next spring. Arapaho is the earliest thornless blackberry
in existence. The berries are large and very firm, with excellent flavor. An
important, positive characteristic of the Arapaho is its small seed size. According
to Texas Cooperative Extension Horticulturist Marty Baker of Overton, “They
are resistant to rust diseases and blossom diseases like double blossom. They are
the longest-keeping blackberries of all.”
CHESTER (Thornless)____________________________ Zones 5-9
A thornless variety with good resistance to cane blight. Bears large, very
sweet, high-quality fruit which is excellent for fresh use, jams, jellies and baked

Aroma Varieties
CAscade________________________________________________
This American-bred aroma hop has also been referred to as a craft brewers and
growers “workhorse” hop. Cascade’s floral and citrus notes add a citrusy nose
and/or flavor to any brew and have been particularly popular in Pale Ales,
IPAs, Porters, and Wheat Beers due to its relatively low bittering value. Bines
are smaller in diameter with 24-30” sidearms, which are good for picking,
drying and baling.
liberty_________________________________________________
hops
Released in 1991, Liberty is one of the four hybrid triploid Hallertauer noble
aroma varieties. With a nose similar to that of Hallertauer this mild yet slightly
spicy variety has been used in many Pilsners, Bocks, US Wheat beer, Kolsch,
and Belgian style beer. Liberty takes two seasons generally to establish; however,
with well drained, acidic soil it has proven to have an impressive brewing profile.
Bittering Varieties
Chinook________________________________________________
If you’re looking for a superior bittering hop, this super alpha hybrid variety
has high vigor and yield to accompany its heavy aroma. Chinook has been used
both for bittering/flavoring and aroma in beer styles such as Pale Ales, Lagers,
IPAs, Steam Beer and heavy bodied dark Ales. Chinook’s unique spicy, pineresiny flavors with grapefruit undertones have been popular in both craft and
major breweries. Perfect for a new grower, as it is very forgiving to uncontrolled
growing conditions.
Nugget_________________________________________________
Released in 1982, Nugget is a bittering hop that has made a name for itself
in the US as well as in Germany. Though it has been very important
1989
in the bittering world, this is a
dual purpose hop. Nugget exhibits
strong, green, herbal notes that
have primarily found their way
into Pale Ales, and IPAs. Bines are
quite large and have ranked in the
top ten for vigor and yield making
it a great variety for picking,
drying and baling.

These ratings are relative rankings, based on standard application rates, good spray coverage, and
proper spray timing. Actual levels of disease control will be influenced by these factors in addition to
varietal susceptibility and disease pressure.

Resources
Material taken from “2014 New York and Pennsylvania Pest Management Guidelines for Grapes”
Notes:
a. NOTE: Powdery mildew (PM) resistance to the strobilurin fungicides (Abound, Flint, Sovran) has occurred in multiple vineyards, sometimes
resulting in significant crop loss. When such resistance occurs, none of the strobilurin fungicides will provide commercial control of PM if applied alone, and they must be tank-mixed with an unrelated, effective powdery mildew fungicide to avoid crop loss. Pristine, a product that
combines a strobilurin fungicide with the unrelated material, boscalid, has provided excellent PM control in strobilurin-resistant vineyards.
Because this control comes primarily from the boscalid component, which also is at risk for resistance development, Pristine should be used
sparingly and with caution where problems with stobilurins have been encountered. Quadris Top is a new product that similarly combines
azoxystrobin (Abound) and the DMI fungicide, difenoconazole. Difenoconazole has provided very good to excellent PM control in strobilurin‐
resistant vineyards. Nevertheless, all Group 11 fungicides considered together should be applied no more than two times per season IN TOTAL,
ADDITIONALLY: Downy mildew resistance to the strobilurins is common in the mid‐Atlantic and southern regions of the U.S and is suspected
in some NY vineyards as well. The boscalid component of Pristine and the difenoconazole component of Quadris Top do NOT control downy
mildew, so all of these materials must be tank‐mixed with an effective DM fungicide if that disease has become resistant to the strobilurins.
b. Fair control at the lower rate labeled for powdery mildew, good to excellent control at the higher rate labeled for other diseases.
c. Refers only to fixed copper formulations listed in Table 8.3. Most insecticides labeled for use on grapes are incompatible with lime. Check
insecticide label for incompatibility with alkaline spray materials. See New York Food and Life Sciences Bulletin No. 118 (http://ecommons.
cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/5149/1/FLS-‐118.pdf) for information on effects of alkaline hydrolysis on pesticides.
d. Ridomil MZ formulations (Ridomil + mancozeb) will give moderate control of Phomopsis and black rot, due to the partial rate of mancozeb
that is provided by applying the labeled rate of this product. The Ridomil Copper formulation will provide moderate suppression of powdery
mildew, particularly on moderately resistant cultivars (e.g. Concord), due to the amount of copper provided by applying it labeled rate.
e. Sulfur activity is strongly influenced by rate and frequency of application, formulation, and by weather. It is highly effective when applied
at relatively high rates and short (7‐day) spray intervals, but efficacy can decline as intervals increase and/or rates decrease, especially in
rainy weather. Micronized and flowable formulations are more persistant than wettable powders. “Spreader‐sticker” adjuvants will increase
persistence in rainy weather.
f. Powdery mildew resistance to the DMI fungicides (difenoconazole products, Mettle, *NY Procure, Rally, tebuconazole products,*NYViticure)
appears to be present at varying levels throughout most of the viticultural districts of New York and Pennsylvania. Although these materials
continue to provide significant control in most vineyards, they generally are less active than in the past and most should not be relied upon as
the primary tool for powdery mildew management. Nevertheless, all DMI fungicides remain valuable in rotational programs with newer and
often more active powdery mildew fungicides. Difenoconazole products have provided excellent control even in vineyards where other DMI
products have started to “slip”; hence, it’s higher rating.
g. Although poorly documented, resistance to iprodione appears to be common in vineyards where this fungicide has been used regularly over
a long period of time. Because iprodione resistance “dies down” over time if the product isn’t used, it is recommended that this fungicide be
avoided for 1 to 2 years where it has been regularly in the past, then applied no more than once per season if and when use resumes. Iprodione
is very effective against Botrytis when not compromised by resistance.
