mensuration and statistics in simple
forms using teaching-learning materials
(TLM) was discussed.
Participants were grouped and were
given different TLMs to try out. Each
group activity was followed by a
discussion that clarified many concepts
and generated innovative ideas about
teaching a particular topic. Teachers
shared their experiences of teaching
and this was a learning experience in
itself.
Bringing the workshop to an end,
Macmillan Education highlighted the
use of technology in learning and
understanding Mathematics. They
have developed a website for this
purpose: http://in.bettermarks.com/
Students may log in and practise

No-Fire Cooking
When: 07 September 2013
Where: Home Science & Biology Lab
Learning to cook helps children learn
about nutrition and healthy eating,
besides developing their creativity and
imagination through the use of
colours, textures and flavours. They
also learn to work together as a team,
to plan and to make choices. They
learn life skills and not to rely on fast
food and junk food when they are on
their own.
Pupils from the four Houses were
advised to set their tables according to
the themes of their choice. They were
to prepare a drink and a snack or a
dessert. As it was a ‘no-fire’ cooking
competition, they were allowed to
bring some pre-cooked ingredients,
like boiled vegetables, chicken, and
eggs. The competitors chopped the
fresh vegetables and fruits, mixed or
blended the ingredients, assembled
them and plated them in school. The
participants were given 80 minutes to
prepare and serve their dishes.
Cedar House made Vilayati Murgh
Salad, Faldaar Mithas, Chicken Club
Sandwich and Strawberry Ice Cream
Shake.
Palm House prepared Cheesecake,
Fruit Smoothie, Wraps, and Coco
Delight made with coconut.
Oak House made Hors d’Oeuvre
Exotica, Excellenso Meloni (a
watermelon-based drink), crunchy
Vegetable Salad and Banana Shake.
Chinar House prepared Juicy Juleps (a

Puja Assembly
A special Durga Puja assembly was held by the Primary
Department on 23 October 2013 through narration,
recitation, song and
dance.
More than fifty
children from
Nursery 1 to Class 2
enacted the epic
drama of Goddess
Durga killing
Mahishasura. The
rest of the children
sang three beautiful
songs. The dhakis
danced to the
rhythmic beats of
the dhaks, and later
the children danced
to the tunes of Aaj
Dhaner Khete, Aaye
Re Chhute Aaye and
Pujo Eshechhe.
Children’s Day
14 November was celebrated a little
differently this year. The Primary
School teachers put up a scintillating
show, based on the popular cartoon
Doremon, for the children, whose
hearty claps and screams of approval
clearly expressed their delight. Soon
after, came goody bags from Monginis.
No Honking Day
Storytelling Session
When: 16 & 23 August 2013
Where: Junior School
Nursery and Preparatory classes
enjoyed a special storytelling session
conducted by Ms Ranjana Nandi, exteacher of Calcutta International
School. Ms Nandi made the simple
story of a little fish, which lived in a
pond and had an immense desire to
visit the ocean, a visual treat for the
little learners. It was an interactive
session during which the children
answered various questions put to
them by Ms Nandi.
When: 09 September 2013
The Kolkata Police invited more than
2500 students from 11 schools to join
the Traffic Police at about 111
crossings during peak hours to make
motorists aware of the dangers of
sound pollution caused by the
excessive use of horns, especially near
schools and hospitals. The children
used placards, posters, and banners to
get the message across.

OBITUARY
Little Green Fingers
Where: Junior School
In keeping with the view that ‘learning
by doing’ is a very effective method of
gaining knowledge, teachers first
explained the concept of germination to
Class 1, and then the children were
told to bring seeds planted in small
pots to school and keep them on the
window-sills of their classrooms. Each
child was responsible for his or her
own pot, and had to water and tend to
the plant every day during the recess.
They saw for themselves how seeds
sprout into young shoots with the help
of air and sunshine.
Samridhi Roy 11C, who had passed
her ICSE with 92.4% marks from
this School this year, succumbed to
leukaemia on 11 August 2013 after a
brave struggle. We pray that her
soul may rest in peace.
