Rodrigo Plá (b. 1968) is a director, screenwriter, and
producer, born in Uruguay and raised in Mexico. He studied
film at the national Mexican film school CCC and made several
acclaimed short films before his feature film debut LA ZONA,
which screened at TIFF and won a number of international awards.

MEDITERRANEA, featured in this year’s TIFF program, depicts the
hazardous journey many refugees embark on across the
Mediterranean Sea, and lead actor Koudos Seihon is himself
a former boat refugee. At TIFF, Seihon participate in a seminar
(International seminar: Migration – and then?) to debate the
pressing questions related to migration that are addressed in the film.

He has worked as on a number of Norwegian featurefilm productions in

Asier Altuna (b. 1969) is a director and screenwriter from the Basque
Country in Spain. His first feature film AUPA ETXEBESTE! ensured him
a Goya Award nomination for Best New Director together with

Gabriel Mascaro (b. 1983) is a director and visual artist from Recife, Brazil. He studied communication at the Federal University in Pernambuco.
Mascaro has directed several shorts and documentaries, and his two
feature films have screened at prestigious film festivals such
as Rotterdam, Venice and Toronto

Sonja Heiss (f. 1976) studied at the German film school HFF Munich.
Her graduate project, HOTEL VERY WELCOME, was her feature film
debut, and was well received at film festivals all over. Heiss has directed
a number of commercials for television and several short films. She lives
and works in Berlin.

Laura Tonke (b.1974) is an award winning actress and writer, known for
Ostkreuz (1991), Winterschläfer (1997) and have appeared in a wealth of
other movies. She has also been active in the theatre and done modeling

Peter Grönlund (b. 1977) is a Swedish director and screenwriter. He
graduated from the Stockholm Film School and has worked on a number of Swedish film productions. His experience as a social worker is
reflected in his first feature film DRIFTERS, which has received brilliant
reviews in Sweden.

Bear at Berlinale 15 / “The Reunion” (Återträffen) and won the Critics
Award at Venice Film Festival.

Ella Manzheeva (b. 1981) is a director from Elista in Kalmykia, Russia.
She studied music from childhood, and later studied sound directing and
directing, the latter at the Postgraduate School of Film Directors
in Moscow. Her first feature film THE GULLS screened in the Forum
section at the 2015 Berlinale.

José Luis Guerín (b. 1960) is a Spanish director from Barcelona. He
directed many experimental short films early in his career, and became
known outside Spain for his episode in the omnibus film CITY LIFE
(1988). He won the Spanish national Goya Award for his documentary
IN CONSTRUCTION in 2001.

Angeles. His latest major role was Archie Witman in the TV series MAD
MEN. WELCOME TO THE MEN’S GROUP is his first feature film
where he himself also stars as the notorious womanizer Michael.

Welcome on board! “TIFF ON DECK” is an annual special screening on
board the coastal ferry Hurtigruten. This year’s event presents highlights
from the upcoming Norwegian feature film BIRKEBEINERNE, directed
and presented by Nils Gaup (known for the Academy Award-nominated
action drama PATHFINDER). The film is a spectacular historical action
drama set to the 13th century. In a time of civil war in Norway, two men
set out on a dangerous journey on skis to try and protect a heir to the
throne – a deed that altered the course of Norway’s history.

Vanessa-Tatjana Beerli is the director of Ciné Tapis Rouge - a non-profit
organization based in Montreal. Their mission is to promote Québec
films internationally through an annual film festival exchange between
Quebec and a partner festival in a foreign country, in return bringing
other national cinemas to audiences in Montreal.
