First I would like to congratulate
Stan Boor, who is being awarded the MBE.
Amongst all his commitment in the
community Stan has been a great help to
me with the magazine.
Enjoy your day with the queen, Stan !!
Thanks also goes to Andy Lynch who has
made a fantastic ‘Story Book’ on the Haxey
Hood, along with some brilliant photos. If
anyone would like to purchase any photos
of the Hood, published in the magazine,
please get in touch with Andy or myself.
Amongst my travels I meet lots of people
who keep asking me about articles in the
magazine. If anyone out there has a special
event coming up, if you are in a group,
have a special talent, a special birthday,
please let me know.
You could be a part of the magazine!
Also if anyone is interested in delivering
the Arrow, give me a call.
Again I hope you enjoy the read and keep
those articles coming in.

Police News
The south of the Isle of Axholme continued to have higher than usual levels of vehicle crime
through December 2008 and into the new year, with theft from motor vehicles being the
main problem. These crimes are rarely pre-planned and occur when the suspect passes a
vehicle and sees something inside that is valuable and easy for him/her to pass
on. Generally this can mean laptop computers, satellite navigation systems, handbags
etc. If these items were kept out of sight then the crime's would not occur. So please
remember this when you park and leave your vehicle to put any valuable items out of sight.
A more community based issue has been raised regarding dog fouling, and it's impact on
local residents. Particular problems appear to be around the footpaths on the way to Haxey
Primary School (off The Nooking) and it's impact on the children travelling to and from
school on foot. However, most parks and paths do suffer from some of these problems and
residents can contact North Lincolnshire Council if they have any details of persistent
offenders who refuse to clean up after their dogs. The council have Neighbourhood
Enforcement Officers who will investigate any complaint and prosecute the offending owner
if there is enough evidence.
Pc Bill Cook retires from the Police Service at the beginning of February 2009 and is being
replaced by Pc Tina Starbuck, who will take up the role of the Axholme South
Neighbourhood Police Officer. Tina is a very experienced police officer who has worked out
on the Isle of Axholme previously and is looking forward to the challenges ahead. We send
our best wishes for the future to Bill and thank him for the many years of service he has
given to the residents of both North and North-East Lincolnshire.
Your Police Community Support Officer, Sue Fahy, regularly patrols on foot throughout the
South of the Isle and will be happy to stop and discuss any community problems with
you. Please feel free to stop her if you see her. Alternatively, she will be available at
the police surgery in Haxey Library (3pm to 4pm on Monday 2nd February 09) if
you want to speak to her there. The police station at Epworth also provides
a front counter service for three days a week, Tuesday and Thursday, between
9am and 3pm; as well as for two hours on a Monday afternoon (2.30pm to
4.30pm). Humberside Police non emergency number is 0845 60 60 222.
Thank you.

News from Wroot Travis Primary School
Well here we are back at school and all of 2009 to look forward to. We are having some building
work done at school including a new room on the back of the building. The new room is to be
called the study and is very nice. It will be used for all sorts of things and we can’t wait until it’s
finished. We are also having a covered walkway between the two buildings to stop the children
getting wet if it’s raining.
On Monday 12th January the builders needed to do some work in the girl’s toilets and they would be
in there most of the day. This would have made things very difficult so we thought a trip would be a
good idea. We tossed some ideas around and decided a trip to The Deep in Hull would be great
and it would fit in with the curriculum work this term. We had a wonderful day out and learnt a lot
about creatures that live under the sea.
Our builders have been really kind and considerate. When they were laying bricks the children
went out to watch and they gave us odd bits of material so that our nursery children could do their
own building at the back of their classroom.
On Friday 23rd January the KS2 children went on a visit to Scunthorpe County Court. This was part
of their work on Citizenship and proved to be a very interesting visit. Most children don’t get the
opportunity to see inside a court and to hear the reasons people would be there, our children found
it very informative and discovered that they don’t want to be the ones in the dock.
During one of our after school cookery clubs the children planned a menu and last week they
cooked sausages, mash and carrots with real gravy and sat down to eat it with their teacher.
This was followed by a selection of cheeses with biscuits and fruit. The children really enjoyed
themselves but it did finish a little late, normally the class would finish at 4.15 but they were still
eating at 5.00. The parents collecting children were very patient and didn’t mind waiting for the
children to finish.
Last week it was Panto week for Wroot and several of our children took part. The village hall was
packed for four nights and it was a really good show. The children thoroughly enjoyed the
experience and can’t wait for the next show.
The children are working as a team to create a fantasy football team as part of their work at Study
United.

Airport News, by Clare Wilson Environment and Community Manager
The Airport has taken off to green start in 2009 with the assistance from Mexborough–born star
Brian Blessed. At the Airport’s official opening, Mr Blessed waived his appearance fee to
donate to the Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield ‘Last Call’ carbon sequestration scheme.
The donation has funded 1,000 trees; the biggest donation ever received to Last Call, so our
thanks to Brian. Planting of the trees has already begun by children at Campsmount School,
Intake, planting 250 trees on their school premises to lock in carbon from aircraft activity. For
more information about the Last Call scheme please visit http://www.lastcall.org.uk/.
Also available on the Airport website is the Airport Draft Master Plan setting out the vision for
the Airport until the year 2030. The plan sets out the details for the FARRS link road, Railway
Station on the Doncaster - Lincoln line, additional apron, aircraft stands and taxiways, housing
development, community support facilities, green infrastructure and much more. For those
residents who have not been able to attend the public exhibitions, the Airport would still like to
hear what you think of the draft plan. Further details about the Airport development and plans
for the future can be found in the Draft Master Plan at www.robinhoodairport.com. The
consultation period has been extended to the 16th March 2009. If you would like to respond,
and shape the future of the Airport please submit your comment using the form on the website
or by calling (01302) 802055 to request a Summary Leaflet to submit your comments.
Good news for the Tickhill and District Footpath Group and Blaxton and Finningley Joint
Playing Fields Association as they have both been granted financial support through the
Airport’s Community Investment Fund.
Tickhill and District Footpath Group applied to the fund for help with the printing costs of their
revised programme of walks, ‘Walks Around and About the Parish of Tickhill.’ Within the
group’s application the Airport was impressed by the group’s efforts of promoting walking as a
healthy activity and raising awareness of the walking routes within the Parish of Tickhill to local
residents and visitors alike.
Blaxton and Finningley Joint Playing Fields Association required funding from the Airport to
help towards the cost of replacing the tennis court fencing which over the year has been
vandalised and prevented the local community access. After a visit to the site, the Airport
recognised that the playing fields are at the heart of both communities and by supporting the
project many local people will benefit and will once again be able to enjoy their local facilities.
And finally, if the winter blues are getting you down and your next summer holiday can’t come
soon enough… then why not think about taking a short break to the beautiful Channel Island of
Jersey? Robin Hood Airport is delighted to announce that from next summer, flights to the
holiday island with Flybe will increase to four times per week during the peak summer period.
Flights will begin operating on March 29, 2009, and will run until October 22 with Tuesday,
Thursday and Sunday flights. There will also be a fourth Saturday frequency to satisfy peak
summer demand between 23 May and 27 Sept. Flights and short breaks are available to book
now at www.robinhoodairport.com or alternatively by calling 0871 2820664.
For further information about any of the above please contact me at the Airport or email

Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society
In December the members of the Society enjoyed their Christmas party in
Westwoodside Village Hall. Ample food was provided by the members and they enjoyed
their usual quiz, along with entertainment this year provided by Rebecca Wilcox of
Haxey. After the raffles were drawn, the evening finished in traditional fashion with
Anne Cooper playing the piano for members to join in the singing of carols. The
“Twelve Days of Christmas” is always a particular success at these events.
A cold night in January saw a visit from Jennie Shepperd of Beltoft talking about “Straw in
the Bible”. Jennie is always full of enthusiasm for her subject of straw making and had
brought many items with her to show members. She showed tow prize-winning items
that she had made herself for competitions organised by the Strawmakers Guild, of
which she is a member. One item she had purchased was a traditional head-dress from
Belarusse and she had another straw hat that she had loaned to B.B.C 2 for their current
production “Victorian Farm”. She showed her audience many items she had made
herself from straw including not only corn dollies, but also a rosary and picture frame.
Jennie said there were several mentions of straw in the Bible beginning with offerings
made by Cain and Abel through to Jesus walking in a field of corn on the Sabbath and
eating some of the grains. Norma Neill gave a vote of thanks for an interesting talk.
The next meeting of the Society is on Thursday, February 12th
at 7:30pm when the Rev. Plant will be talking about “Old Coins”
If you are interested in coming along, everyone is most
welcome.

Cawsey’s Column
News & views from local MP, Ian Cawsey
Stan is honoured!
This is the first Arrow article I’ve written since the
announcement that Stan Boor has been awarded the MBE. I’ve
known Stan for more years than either of us would care to remember and it is well
deserved. His work on the local parish council and for local charities is well known and he
works hard to ensure that stallholders and
exhibitors are well looked after at the
Epworth Show – we’re pictured with my
gang at the show – Stan’s the one drinking
my red wine! It’s a well deserved honour so
many congratulations to Stan!
I’m actually writing this the day after Barack
Obama finally became President of the US.
Parliament was sitting that day and during the
oath and the start of his speech the
Commons was like a ghost town as MPs and staff sat in their offices waiting to hear his
first Presidential speech. He got about two minutes into it when the division bell went off
and we all had to go to vote! Classic timing, anyway we wish him well as what he decides
will have a big impact here as well.
Did you know that the next few weeks are often the main time of year when unwanted
pets, particularly cats and dogs are abandoned or handed over to local sanctuaries. As a
trustee of Jerry Greens Dog Rescue I see this and we fear this year it may be higher as the
effects of the global credit crunch hit home. So if you think you can offer a new home for
a rescued pet then please get in touch. You can call Cats Protection on 08702 099 099 or
Jerry Greens on 01652-657820.
Finally I’ve had a great encouragement from local people for the Macmillan Cancer Care
fundraising event I am part of this month. Along with my MP colleagues in our MP4 band
we are playing in an MPs and Peers Variety Show to try to raise £100,000 in one night! I’m
pictured rehearsing for the event. I’ll report back on how we do – and yes many of you
have said that we could raise more if they paid for us to stop singing!
There’s more on all of this and all the latest on my website at www.iancawsey.co.uk and
for a light hearted view you can read my blog at http://blog.myspace.com/iancawseymp If
you need to get in touch you can email me at [email protected] or call my office on
01652-651327.

A North Lincolnshire theatre group “The Beltonians” performed
their new musical “Greys”, a pastiche on the musical “Grease” last month at Belton
Public Hall and received great reviews. “Greys” was written by Keith Skelton of
Gunthorpe who was a patient at Weston Park at
the time.
Whilst penning the musical, Keith’s consultants
took an interest and so with encouragement it was
decided that the musical should be performed in
Sheffield with all monies going to Weston Park
Hospital Cancer Charity.
(Two ladies in the show all ready
for a “night out on the town”.
Bents Green Church Hall, Sheffield was booked for Saturday 15th November and
“The Beltonians” were eager to help Keith raise funds for Weston Park. They were
also keen to show their talent and agreed to break from rehearsing their latest
pantomime to put on the show.
Overcoming several logistical problems, not the least transporting musical director
Parry Jenkins’ electric organ, keyboard, speakers and amplifier from Wroot to
Sheffield and chairman Alan Lenton forgetting to load props, “The Beltonians”
triumphed with a magical performance which had the locals rocking with laughter.
After presenting Lyndsey Raynor of Weston Park Hospital with a cheque for £400
she said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone involved in “Greys”, especially
Keith for such a contribution. “The Beltonians” are such generous supporters and
we would like to thank them all for all they have done. Groups like this are the
lifeblood of our charity: they work so hard, have fun, entertain people and also
raise vital funds to support cancer research and improve treatment and care for
patients in our region. Contributions like this help keep Weston Park at the
forefront of cancer care in the UK.”
“The Beltonians” are proud to have performed “Greys” especially written for them
by Keith Skelton and to have helped the Hospital in such a tangible way:
The Beltonians” with the
presentation cheque of
£400 for “Weston Park
Hospital Cancer
Charity” (The cheque is
held by Keith Skelton
and the youngest
member of the group
Jessica Martin )

Once again the Wroot Amateur
Players (WAPs) have had a resounding
success with their annual pantomime - which
this year was Peter Pan. A sell-out every
night, with rumours that the final nights
tickets were fetching quite a sum on Ebay!
The superb scenery, wonderful costumes and
the script were all produced by members of
the cast. The songs, comedy sketches and
performances by all, especially the children,
were a delight to watch.

A Happy New Year from Haxey Parish Council
Community Led Parish Plan
The Haxey Parish Plan including Westwoodside, Haxey, Burnham, Graizelound and East Lound
villages is progressing very well. This will be an ongoing process over the next 18 months or
so and will lead to a list of improvements that we all want for the parish over the next 5 to 10
years. The Steering Group is holding regular monthly meetings and further details may be
obtained from the Chairperson, Mrs Alyson Linnegar on 01427 752536
The times and dates for the Open Consultation Days have now been arranged. These are:Westwoodside Village Hall – 28th February 2pm to 6pm
Burnham Village Hall – 7th March 10am to 12 noon
Haxey Memorial Hall – 7th March 2pm to 6pm
Everyone is invited to come along and tell us what they personally feel needs to be done to
improve things. Come and tell us your views on housing, flooding, roads, footpaths, the
environment, policing, public service, recreation or any other relevant matter.
Free tea and coffee will be provided.
John Smedley - 01427 752199.
Allotments
In order to meet the requirements of the Allotments Act 1908, the Parish Council’s Land
Working Party is continuing with research into the provision of Allotments. To date 3
potential sites have been identified – land to rear of the Carpenters Arms, land adjacent to
Langholme Lane and land adjacent to Cove Road. A meeting has been held with prospective
Allotment Tenants to provide them with an update and advise on the set up of an Association.
The Parish Council has been briefed on progress and authorised the collation of Expressions of
Interest from local Contractors, which will lead to site visits and the provision of rough order
of costs for any work required.
Once this information is available, a business case will be presented to the Parish Council with
recommendations for the way forward, which might include a Parish Meeting. At this stage,
the Parish Council is not in a position to take the final decision on the Allotment Project.
Councillor Stan Boor awarded MBE
Congratulations to Stan Boor who has been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s
New Year Honours List. Councillor Boor has been recognised for his services to
the community.
Stan is a long-serving member on Haxey Parish Council and we are delighted that
his years of voluntary work have been rewarded in this way.

More than 350 Yorkshire walks to download and print FREE!
There’s no doubt about it, walking is good for you. It’s good for your heart,
it’s good for your lungs, it’s good for the muscle and bone growth of your
children and it’s good for your feeling of wellbeing! Strong scientific evidence now supports the many benefits to health of regular walking – it is
recommended that we take at least 10,000 steps a day.
Studies show that walking can:
• Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
• Lower blood pressure
• Reduce high cholesterol
• Reduce body fat
• Enhance mental well being
Walking offers a great way to help kids get the active habit. If parents express excitement about the prospect of a walk in the countryside, they are
more likely to transmit this feeling to their children. It’s important to treat
the walk as an exploration or adventure and to go at the child’s pace, no
matter how often they want to stop and look at things; take treats to eat and
plenty to drink; and head for some landmark that will appeal to them such as
a castle, a playground, an ice cream van or a boating pond. If children experience walking as part of a fun activity they are more likely to want to go
again.
So, how do you find out what is on offer? John Harris, a keen walker, got
fed up with the lack of information on walks in the County. So, he decided
that if he couldn’t find what he was looking for – he had better create it! So
www.walkinginyorkshire.co.uk came into being.
www.walkinginyorkshire.co.uk gives you all the information you need for
the best walking in the County:
Details of more than 350 walks to
download and print free, details of
all the Somerset walking groups,
maps and walk books – plus loads
more information.
So check out the website and
get walking!

News from Axholme Camera Club
COMPETITION, COMPETITION, COMPETITION........................
The Haxey Photographic Competition 2009 is sponsored by Haxey Parish Council
and is in association with Axholme Camera Club. Residents of the Parish of Haxey
are invited to submit entries of photographs taken within the Parish between 1st
of January 2008 and 1st of March 2009. Entries should be submitted between 1st
March and 17th April 2009 at Haxey Library during opening hours or by
arrangement to Allan Rowsell, Chairman of Axholme Camera Club ( tel: 01427
752400 ).
There are 3 categories, i) Adults living in the Parish of Haxey, ii) Young people in
full time education, living within the Parish of Haxey, iii) Members of Axholme
Camera Club. Generous prizes of £75 x2 and £50 are offered. No more than 2
prints per person, with name, title, age ( Cat ii only ) and address should be
written on the back of each photograph or mount.
Initially, a panel of judges will shortlist the entries, then members of the public will
make the final selection by attending the Parish Council's Annual Meeting in May.
For further information, please contact Councillor John Smedley on
01427 752199 or Allan Rowsell, who hope to see many photographs entered and
a successful competition.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Members entered around forty photographs into a Knock-out Competition
organised by Peter Webster. Although a fun addition to the usual monthly
competitions, the prints were of a high standard and excellent quality, covering a
variety of subjects. Members had some
difficulty eliminating three prints from each
round. Finally, the worthy winner with a
fabulous sunset shot taken locally, was John
Roberts, seen in the attached photograph,
(left) with his winning entry, and receiving his
'cup' from Peter Webster.
Axholme Camera Club is a friendly group of
people with an interest in photography in all
its forms, always happy to welcome visitors
and new members to the meetings at Haxey Church Hall on alternate Tuesdays
and Wednesdays at 7.30pm.

Westwoodside School C E Primary School
On 19 January Mrs Dianne Leahy from North Lincolnshire Museum Outreach
Service visited the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) children at
Westwoodside Church of England School.
Each class had a turn at exploring toys from three historical periods – Tudor,
Victorian and The 1950s/60s. Toys from each time period were set out in three
areas in the hall. During the ‘Toy Story Workshop’ the children learnt from a
very hands on approach where they were encouraged to touch all the toys. It
was an extremely good example of play based learning. Mrs Leahy carefully
adapted the language for the two different age groups. The children’s favourite
toys were the spinning tops and wooden scooters from The Fifties/Sixties.
The learning was extended into more scientific areas as the children sorted by
materials used e.g. the hoops into Tudor wooden, Victorian metal and Fifties/
Sixties plastic.
Mrs Leahy mentioned how
responsive and well behaved the
Westwoodside C.E. School
were.
This proved to be a wonderful
play based learning experience
for all involved
Best Wishes

Over the Christmas holidays I went to Hartington
hall for a weekend in
Derbyshire. My mum and dad
tortured me with a five mile
bike ride (it must have been
three miles longer for the
hills). The place was fantastic
with a game room and play
area. The day after we did a
five mile walk (torture again!).
My Christmas was brilliant. My family
came over for Christmas dinner. I was
the first to open my Christmas
presents. The best presents I got were: a
volcano kit, rockband on the Nintendo
wii (I dropped the drumsticks and
played the drums with my hands, I got booed off the
stage), and a play station 2.

News from The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
The next meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday March
5th 2009 when we will have our annual member’s slide/digital/
print evening.
This is always a popular meeting and we generally have about five
or six members showing us photographs
on a variety of subjects. These subjects
do not have to be on wildlife and in the
past we have had everything from
railways to exotic places.
As always our meetings are open to
everyone but if you would like to show
some photographs please contact Geoff
beforehand as this helps with organising
the evening’s programme.
You don’t have to be an expert photographer so don’t be shy, we just enjoy
looking at a variety of images and hearing the stories associated with them.
We meet at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel starting at
7.30pm.
There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.
Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff’s house in Belton.
For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please
contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming
all regular members and new visitors.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists
One-Eyed Monsters are on the Increase
Dear readers,
We’ve all see them – cars with only one headlight’ that can so easily be momentarily
mistaken for a motorcycle. Well they’re breeding and there’s a reason. Its called
technology! Yes, the more sophisticated and effective car lighting has become, the more
difficult it is to replace faulty bulbs and sealed lights units.
The basis of the problem seems to be a combination of evermore streamlined car bodies
crammed with evermore technology, to the point were there’s only room for another
penny washer under the bonnet and not the tools or even the hands to replace a
headlamp bulb.
Apparently on some cars you have to remove the battery, disconnect air hoses or even
take off the front bumper! Some accessory outlets offer a bulb fitting service for a small
charge; some vehicles have to have the task carried out by their main dealer. This of
course has serious cost implications and you have to hope they have mechanics with tiny
fingers in tow, otherwise even they may struggle.
Moreover, the problem is not confined to the front lights. Whereas rear bulbs used to be
readily accessible through the boot on most
cars, many modern vehicles require entire
light clusters to be removed first, often at
the cost of torn seals and broken fixings.
This makes a bit of a mockery of some
country’s laws that require motorists to
carry spare bulbs on the car. There seems
little point if they won’t be able to fit them!
This appears to be a problem the industry
has created and one that only they can
resolve. If so, the sooner it happens the
better, as the resulting one-eyed monsters
are a danger to us all.
If you are interested in further information
regarding the courses that we offer you will
be able to find this information on the
Institute of Advanced Motorists website at
