• Aug. 1 & Aug. 8: The Meet the
Artisans program will feature woodcarving
demonstrations from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. On Aug.
1, Abingdon artists John Dickens and Linda
Childers will create Santas, animals, and
other figures. On Aug. 8, Blake Lunsford of
Bristol will carve many different characters;
he specializes in Santas and snowmen.
• Closing Aug. 9: “My Favorite
Things” features wall hangings by members
of the Holston Mountain Arts & Crafts
Cooperative and the Wolf Hills Quilting Guild
who have used traditional and contemporary
quilting techniques. A “People’s Choice” award
will be presented.

• Call for Artists: Entries are still being
accepted for “From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian
Highlands.” The biennial juried exhibition will
open October 23 and will feature artists from
Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee,
Western North Carolina, Southern West
Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. To request an

• Lecture Aug. 4: Jim Coulson will
present “Clock Talk” at 6:30 p.m. The
presentation will be followed by a reception
and tour of the exhibition “Buying Time:
Clocks Along the Great Road, 1790-1870,” on
display through Jan. 3. A member of the
National Association of Watch and Clock
Collectors, Coulson will discuss the history of
clocks and their manufacture in the U.S. He
will also speak about developing a clock
collection and provide visitors with some useful
hints about antique clocks and their value.
• Ongoing: “John Kingerlee: A
Painter’s Passage” continues through Sept.
6. Kingerlee is a 70-year-old British-born artist
who resides in rural Ireland. His expressive
paintings combine gestural brushstrokes and
collage, defining images that float between
representational form and abstraction.

Spotlight Gallery will be “Sanctuaries III”
by Val Lyle of Bristol, Tenn. Lyle takes the
viewer into her childhood playground: a barn,
complete with textures and smells — fresh hay,
for example. This exhibition moves from
stretched canvas paintings and sculptures to
reveal a walk-through installation using a
surprising array of materials as the barn
unveils itself around you. Lyle received a grant
from the Tennessee Arts Commission to
produce an exhibition catalogue that will be
