Directed by Wayne Kramer, this movie stars Harrison Ford as Max Brogan, an immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Supposed to be tough and unfeeling, Brogan has a serious problem, namely a soft heart. His partner, on the other hand, is as tough as they come. This is a complex tale with plenty of action. Also starring Ashley Judd and the beautiful Alice Eve. 113 minutes. THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE (15) US 2009. Pippa Lee is fifty, grown through the angst of teenage and young adulthood into an assured and confident woman, the mother of twins and wife to a hugely successful man who, wait for it, is thirty years her senior. Following his autocratic decision to move them both to a retirement community, Pippa finds her comfy home life severely undermined by his astonishing and successful pursuit of an even younger female. Rebecca Miller (Arthur’s daughter) wrote the book, adapted it for the screen and directs, with Robin Wright Penn, Keanu Reeves and Julianne Moore. 98 minutes. MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT (15) France 2009. This ‘instant gangster classic’ with the ‘electric’ Vincent Cassel in the lead as the superstar criminal, Jacques Mesrine, is crammed with fastmoving sequences and includes a nerve-jangling escape scene. Mesrine, bankrobber, murderer, darling of the media and compulsive seeker of limelight, wrote his story from a prison cell. So active was his life, that the story has been split in two. Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One, will be with us shortly, just one of the reasons to catch the first episode! Director: Jean Francois Bichet. In French with subtitles. 113 minutes. MEERKATS (PG) US 2008. Directed by James Honeybourne and narrated most beautifully by the late Paul Newman, a fascinating natural history documentary about meerkats of the Kalahari desert comes as no surprise to anyone who has watched their activities on TV or observed the instant impression their extraordinary characters make on people of all ages. Kolo is born to become a hero. He has flaws in his make-up and he has to learn the lessons of life very fast indeed. Threats, loss, exile and the possibility of eventual rehabilitation are all very recognisable experiences to humankind. They are also entirely normal within the meerkat population. 83 minutes. THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE (12A) US 2009. It’s a comforting thought that love transcends time and absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that! ‘Dashing’ and ‘adventurous’ are not necessarily adjectives one would apply to a librarian, but they suit Henry De Tamble. The victim of a rare disorder which transports with him hither and yon through time and space, Henry nevertheless maintains a constant, if serially interrupted, love affair with his beautiful wife, left at home to contemplate his frequent absences and wonder about the next visitation. An intriguing story adapted from the best-selling book by Audrey Niffenegger. Director, Robert Schwenke; starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. 107 minutes. BROKEN EMBRACES (15) Spain 2009. The great Spanish Director, Pedro Almódovar, presents an engaging film starring Penelope Cruz and Lluis Omar. Almódovar has a particular affinity with Cruz whom he describes as a chameleon, capable of transmuting herself as a role might demand. Laced with thrills, comedy and melodrama, this movie encompasses all the necessary facets of life to make a good screenplay. Omar plays the part of a blind film director, who’s lost not only his sight, but also the love of his life (Cruz). Memorable music on the soundtrack, too. In Spanish with subtitles. 128 minutes. DORIAN GRAY (15) UK 2009. Having already filmed The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, Director Oliver Parker could be called a Wilde specialist. The story of Dorian Gray is a different cup of tea, just the ticket for Oscar Wilde devotees and lovers of costume drama but also exactly right for those who like things to be a bit creepy. Dorian Gray (Ben Barnes) is a beautiful young man who hits the high life when he meets Lord Wootton (Colin Firth) and falls headlong into a hedonistic lifestyle of declining morality. Wootton has Gray’s portrait painted and, as the young man pursues his own ends with ever more fervent determination, weird things happen to his portrait. Guaranteed to make everyone shudder delightfully! 107 minutes. ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL. Shakespeare’s comedy. LIVE from The National Theatre. Described as ‘a fairytale for adults, beautiful, funny and touching’. (Daily Telegraph).
