ST. NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG 2 Stewardship Reflecting on God’s Word Fi h Sunday of Easter Hearing Jesus’ words, “I am the vine, you are the branches,” sounds comfor ng at first. But then comes “and my Father is the vine grower” (John 15:1). The task of the vine grower is to prune and pruning can be tricky. The danger is cu ng the main vine and not the branches, or cu ng the branches that carry this year’s fruit and not the old ones from last year. But Jesus tells us that it is the Father who is out there with the pruning shears, not some careless hired hand. He is cu ng away the dead wood, and cu ng back the good branches so they bear even more fruit. Nevertheless, you might think, who wants to be pruned, even metaphorically? Who wants God snipping away? It’s hard to be pruned. There is a dying in that. But that is the ongoing story of Easter: dying and rising, pruning and bearing more fruit. God is there pruning us to bring out life, to make us life bearers and life givers. The Father con nues snipping away, separa ng us from our selfishness, our self-centeredness, and all those things we hold on to that do not give us life: resentments, old grievances, desires for ge ng even. God is about life, commi ed to an abundance of life—not just life today but eternal life. That’s the divine plan. Are we part of it? —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. This Thursday, May 7, our Neophytes (newly bap zed) will be learning about opportuni es for con nuing their faith forma on at our parish and throughout the Diocese of Orange. Our growing Inquiry group will con nue exploring their own stories of faith and discussing the scripture readings as they prepare for a Rite of Welcome next month. In Paul’s le ers (Gal. 1:13-13-14 and Phil. 3:5-6), he tells us about his Jewish heritage and educa on as a Jew of the party of the Pharisees. He says that he was well instructed, far beyond others of his age and more of a zealot for the law and tradi ons of Judaism than most. He hated the Messianic movement (the followers of Jesus) because he felt they were teaching falsehood and misleading people. He saw it as the worst of errors and deserving of death in order to preserve the faith. He not only meant what he said with his whole heart, he was not afraid to act on it. Anyone desiring to become a Catholic is welcome to begin the Inquiry Process on Thursday evenings at 7:30. In order to be received into the Catholic Church by Easter 2016, it is necessary to begin the process during the Easter Season this year. ________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday Evening Bible Study This Wednesday evening, May 6, we will con nue with the second session of our study of the Gospel of John. We will meet in the Ministry Center Library from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Please read John, Chapters 2-4 prior to our mee ng. ________________________________________________________________________ Monday Bible Study On Monday morning, May 4, we will con nue with the fourth of an 8-part series on the Biblical texts regarding Mary. This study is accompanied by a DVD with beau ful photography of the places in the Holy Land associated with the life of the Virgin Mary. In this outstanding presenta on, walk with Mary through the Easter season visi ng those places dear to her heart and to her Son. We will meet in the Ministry Center Library from 9:15 to 11 a.m. For more informa on contact Mary Prather at (714) 709-3768. A workbook is available to par cipants for a suggested dona on of $25.00. _______________________________________________________________________ Prayer & Meditation with Scripture We welcome you to join us on Tuesday evening, May 5, when we will reflect on the upcoming Sunday Scripture readings in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. This weekly hour of prayer me u lizes varying prayer forms each week, including Lec o Divina, centering prayer, prayer of remembrance, Taizé prayer and Igna an medita on. It is a me to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. You are all most welcome! _______________________________________________________________________ Wondering Why The reading we have today from Acts of the Apostles moves the emphasis of the last few weeks from Peter and on to Paul. We first meet Paul, whose name at this point was Saul, at the very end of chapter 7 as he witnesses the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the deacon who was stoned to death for preaching about Jesus. In the next chapter we are told that Saul was involved in a severe persecu on of the church in Jerusalem, trying to destroy it and dragging men and women out of their homes to be put in prison Then, in todays reading, one and a half chapters later, we find Saul going to Jerusalem to meet with the apostles. They were not too happy about this, as the story tells us, they were afraid of him. People knew Saul’s reputa on. They knew what he had been doing. Now, what exactly was he up to in Jerusalem wan ng to talk to the leaders of Jesus’ disciples? It would be a bit like a known top-level terrorist showing up at the white house and telling the president that he’d had a change of heart and would very much like to be head of the U.S. Department of Foreign Rela ons. Well, no ma er who the president might be, I don’t think that message would be too well received. This is how the apostles felt about Saul. So, what happens in the me between the end of chapter 7 and the middle of chapter 9? Something no one would have expected. Saul has an experience that converts him to become a follower of Jesus. Given Saul’s strong character, and obs nacy of thought, it must have been a very powerful experience. In his le ers, Paul, which is the name he always uses in his le ers, (although in Acts his name changes from Saul to Paul in chapter 13) speaks only of a revela on that was given to him, and that he was “swept up into the third heaven.” He does not give much detail about it, other than that he had encountered the Risen Christ and instruc on had been given to him, as well as a mission to become the apostle to the Gen le (non-Jewish) na ons. Acts tells the story of Paul’s conversion three mes, in Chapters 9, 22, and 26 and each retelling is different in the details, but conveys the same image of a profound experience. A er a few days in Jerusalem, Barnabas intercedes with the apostles and arranges a mee ng between them and Paul. He stays in Jerusalem and ministers with the apostles for a while, but Paul has not yet perfected his homile c skills and manages to get some of the Jews so upset that they try to kill him. The other apostles send him back to his hometown, Tarsus, and the Bible tells us that then the church was at peace. Paul will remain in Tarsus for another 13 years, working as a tentmaker un l Barnabas once again comes to him and invites Paul to come with him on a mission to An och to inves gate a new group of Chris ans who have developed spiritual gi s, but had never been visited by any of the Apostles. Paul leaves with Barnabas, and begins the first of his three missionary journeys which will ul mately change the world. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
