I just got back from an adventure that I will
share the details with you all at the meeting on
Thursday. Last month I told about my friend, Bill
Roerig, and his 30 year long Falco project. Now
that he is gone, his family is left with what do
they do with his plane? His sons called me to
ask where they start. The plane was Dad/Bill’s
thing and they didn’t have a clue. My flying
buddy, Brian’s name was on the insurance, but
they didn’t even know who he was or how he fit
in the picture. Brian is the one that introduced
me to Bill, and he had asked him to do the first
flight years ago for whenever it got ready. Once
we got that all figured out, Brian and I made a
plan to go back to Oshkosh to do the test flying.
To us it was like a unique and special
opportunity, like a memorial to a special man.

Because Bill had been in that hangar on the corner since around
2006, all the neighbors knew him and had been watching the
progress of his project. Having the Falco outside the hangar, on its
own wheels brought lots of people to see what we were doing. There
are already pictures posted on Facebook. We got to “fine tune” and
work out the “bugs” in his new plane. Knowing that he built all the
parts; ribs, spars, landing gear (struts too), even the upholstery made
the experience even more special.
This month I’m going to show pictures and talk about my
experience with the test flying on Bill’s new Falco.

Why I like to fly
With an airplane I can go places using significantly less time than in a car. Camping in Central Washington on a weeknight sounds
impossible without taking a day off, but with a plane you can do it and still beat traffic in the morning. Idaho or Montana are no longer
reserved for vacation days or the long holiday weekends, but can be accessible on a normal two-day weekend. Leaving the city on a sunny
Friday afternoon is now a pleasant affair rather than a nightmare of stop-n-go traffic. Even if there are a few helicopters around. I also get a
great new perspective of everyday life and an understanding of how close or far away some places really are.

Glasair 2+2 – Oregon: During final approach, the wind gusts ballooned the airplane up and down. Just prior to landing, the pilot added
power, however, the airplane subsequently landed hard and bounced. The pilot could see that the right main gear was damaged
from the hard landing and decided to depart from the area and land at another airport. Further examination revealed substantial
damage to the fuselage near the right landing gear attachment area. (WPR14CA088)

RV-9A – Florida: During the approach to landing, the airplane’s propeller stopped spinning but the Eggenfellner Subaru engine continued
functioning normally. During the forced landing in a field, the airplane flipped over and came to rest inverted. Postaccident
examination of the engine revealed that the spline shaft had uncoupled from the drive disk adapter. The splines of the spline shaft, the
drive disk adapter, and the propeller speed reduction unit (PSRU) input spline exhibited signs of severe wear consistent with fretting
corrosion. Research revealed that several spline shaft failures had occurred on other airplanes; some of the failures resulted in a loss
of engine power and subsequent forced landings, whereas some of the failures were identified during inspection. The manufacturer
issued guidance to users to apply a nickel or copper antiseize compound on the spline shaft during installation of the PSRU to
decrease wear; however, the manufacturer did not provide users with any instructions or recommendations to routinely inspect and
lubricate the spline components. The pilot/builder reported that the PSRU and spline shaft had not been removed, lubricated, or
inspected since it had been installed about 325 hours before the accident. (ERA14LA130)

Experimental aviation supporting sports
As you know the budget cuts have eliminated the military
flyovers at large events. Well, there's a group of guys in Kansas
City who do some formation flying in their own airplanes and
decided they'd volunteer to pick up the slack. One additional
feature of the flyover was the use of pink smoke for cancer
awareness.
