The Ducati Multistrada 1200 turns
every road into an endless emotion.
When you feel the world is not enough for you and the lure of the
road is too strong to resist, the new Ducati Multistrada is your perfect
ally. It shares your passion for mileage and adventure and acts as a
constant incentive to discover new horizons. Thanks to the hands free
system, which communicates with the bike while the key is still in
your pocket, the only thing you need to do is hop on and decide where
to go. The bike will do the rest. Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro…a
crescendo of emotions!
The new Multistrada 1200 presents a number of new features,
improving upon a bike which already posessed unmatched
performance. Most important among these is the Ducati Skyhook
Suspension, which monitors the road constantly and dynamically,
offering better stability. Secondly, exceptionally smooth power
distribution has been introduced, thanks to the new, second
generation Testastretta 11° DS engine.
A bigger torque converter and improved control at medium RPM
make this engine easy to control and perfect to support the four-bikesin-one philosophy.
6
7
There are also important innovations as far as
the braking system is concerned: when you are
relying on the latest Brembo technology and on
the Bosch 9ME ABS integrated in the bike’s Riding
Mode, you know you can relax with absolute
certainty that your bike will brake efficiently and
safely under any circumstances.
As with any Ducati, great attention has been paid
to ergonomics and style. The new windshield is
taller, wider and easy to adjust, the riding position
is commanding and the design is exceptionally
pleasing. This is the special formula that makes
the Multistrada so unique, with its LED headlights
that reveal the road in a completely new light.
The fact that the new Multistrada is a perfect
embodiment of the touring spirit is confirmed
by the two practical 12 V power sockets, which
turn the convenience of an intercom or a mobile
phone into a permanent luxury, and by the special
socket for Garmin Satnav, a Ducati Performance
accessory. On the S Touring and Granturismo
models, the pleasure of long journeys is further
enhanced thanks to the side luggage (58 and 73
kg respectively), heated grips and centre stand.
8
There are four designs in the Multistrada family:
1200, S Touring, S Granturismo and Pikes Peak.
This last model was inspired by the epic race that
takes place on the mountains of Colorado Springs
and is rich in precious aesthetic details.
As a tribute to the bike’s racing heritage, carbon
fibre is used for the air vents, fenders and
windshield. Additionally, the bike is equipped with
a Termignoni silencer and forged 3-spoke rims
derived from the 1199 Panigale S. (You can read
about the Multistrada’s victory at the Pikes Peak
International Hill Climb on page 16).
There is no compromise with the Multistrada
1200. The only thing left to do is to set off on your
adventure and enjoy a journey where the last mile
is as pleasant as the first.
9
The press conference for the unveiling of
the Multistrada 1200 was also the perfect
opportunity to discover Bilbao, the biggest
city in the Basque Country, and the beautiful
area that surrounds it. The city is situated in
the north of the region and sits on the banks of
the river Nervión. The suburban area reaches
all the way to the Bay of Biscay, where the
waters of the Nervión lose themselves in the
Atlantic Ocean.
A lively and picturesque city, Bilbao is
constantly swept by a strong sea breeze.
Surrounded by mountains but close to the
sea, it is the country’s biggest port and, until a
few years ago, it fought for its independence
with great determination. The city of Bilbao
has a courageous, authentic quality about
it; here the new and the old intertwine in a
fascinating way.
When you take a stroll around the historical
centre of the city − a maze of pedestrian
streets lined with shops, bars and restaurants
in which you can savour a glass of wine
accompanied by pintxos (the basque version
of tapas) − you feel you could almost be in
the famous Via Prè in Genoa or at the Vucciria
market in Palermo.
But then you turn a corner and come upon
a strikingly modern building, so futuristic in
its appearance that is seems to stand on
the border between the real and the unreal.
This is Frank Owen Gehry’s Guggenheim
museum, the new icon of the modern city;
a symbol made of shiny curves, glass and
titanium, it resembles a ship and is a tribute
to the sea.
In short this is what Bilbao is: old and new, a
discovery of the past and a journey into the
future.
A future traced by the greatest architects
of our century, who have showcased their
ability and glorified their genius by tracing
previously unimagined shapes on a blank
page and then transforming them into
buildings and museums.

Bilbao Press Road Test
The 200 km route that
journalists rode to test
the new Multistrada 1200.
Like the Zubizuri bridge by Santiago
Calatrava, the underground by Sir Norman
Foster, the brand new headquarters of the
Government Health Department designed by
Juan Coll-Barreu and Daniel Gutiérrez Zarza,
the Zubiarte shopping centre designed by
the American architect Robert Stern and the
Pedro Arrupe Bridge devised by engineer
José Antonio Fernández Odóñez. And then
there is Zorrozaurre, an artificial peninsula, a
project of incredible proportions conceived by
the brilliant Zaha Hadid, who completes this
crown of architects. Or rather, of superstars.
Bilbao, the capital of Biscay, is a city not to be
missed, but it is also a good starting point to
discover the breathtaking scenery close by.
Surrounded by contrasting landscapes and
a network of roads perfect for bikes, it is a
great place for a travelling adventure.
11
Solepana, a traditional surfing location
where rocks battle the sea and men have
challenged the waves since 1964, lies only
twenty minutes from Bilbao.
The harshness and strength of the sea
mark the landscape up to Bermeo, a typical
fishing village nestled amongst the rocks.
In the proximity of Bakio, on the ragged
Vizcaya coast, the monastery of San Juan
Gaztelugatxe draws the visitor’s attention. It
is connected to the land by a bridge and the
only way to reach it is a climb of 230 steps.
Continuing along roads that seem as if they
were a child’s drawing, the scenery changes
and the sea gives way to the bright colours of
the forest. This is the area of the Biosphere
Reserve of Urdaibai, Unesco heritage
sight, where meadows, beaches, cliffs
and swamps merge into each other. A real
explosion of colour where the green of the
grass wins over the blue of the sea, and the
brown of the earth mingles with the lighter
colour of the sand.
But for those like us, who ride through these
lands on a motorbike, the area near Bilbao
is a constant roller coaster of climbs and
drops, soft bends and hairpin turns, a source
of incredible emotion which gives us the
opportunity to live our passion to the fullest.

LOOK
Riding Mode, Riding Look
For him and for her, the Multistrada line of clothing
has been designed with versatility in mind: the
only boundary is your choice of destination. The
high-tech content combines the best design with
elegance, security and comfort, giving the Ducati
rider perfect style both in the city and in the
mountains, just like the Multistrada.
The jacket has three layers – thermal lining, GoreTex®, and outer layer – and includes elbow and
shoulder protection in line with European safety

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2012
The interesting thing about being on top is that you can see
everyone coming for you. Everything it took to get you there
now gets refocused on staying there and when “the top”
happens to be at the 14,110 ft crest of Pikes Peak, this is no
easy feat.
In 2011, Carlin Dunne piloted the Ducati Multistrada 1200
to its second consecutive victory at Pikes Peak and set the
all-time fastest motorcycle record with a time of 11:11.32.
One year later, he joins 6-time Pikes Peak Champion Greg
Tracy as they seek to defend the title for Ducati at the 90th
running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Pikes
Peak International Hill Climb ranks second only to the Indy
500 as America’s oldest motorsports race. This legendary hill
climb takes place in the heart of the Rockies near Colorado
Springs, CO. Year after year, brave souls go head to head
with the mountain taking on its 156 turns, dramatic cliffs
and incredible elevation changes over the course of 12.42
miles. There are no air fences to keep you from sliding off the
edge. There are no corner workers to worn you of changes
in condition on the road. This race is not for the faint at heart
and the lives it has claimed throughout history prove that the
mountain is as unforgiving as it is awe-inspiring.
If defending the title wasn’t going to be challenging enough,
the final section of dirt road would be paved in 2012, creating
an entirely paved race course for the first time in the storied
history of the Race to the Clouds. The speeds would be
higher and the risks even greater than ever before.
17
way to the starting grid. Several months of practice
and preparation have brought them to this point and
both were poised to take the victory.
Dunne gets off the starting line first to the delight of
the fans as the Ducati roars up the mountain. Shortly
thereafter, Tracy wheelies off of the line in hot pursuit.
Fans immediately cling to radios as they anxiously
await split times. It is apparent early on that Tracy is
blazing up the mountain, but there is no word about
Dunne… Nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds later
announcers delight in sharing the news that Tracy has
not only set the course record, but done so in under
ten minutes!
Later, it was reported that Dunne’s transponder had
failed, but manual timing confirmed his blinding
9:52:819 time. He had done it! He had piloted the
Multistrada 1200 to victory for the second consecutive
year putting Ducati on top for the third year running.
Not only would Dunne defend the title with his recordshattering run, but he and Tracy would end up third
and fourth respectively amongst the entire leader
board including all of the cars!
Once again, Ducati sits atop the legendary Pikes Peak
International Hill Climb. Having set the record for
the fastest motorcycle in the history of Pikes Peak
under both partially and fully paved conditions speaks
volumes about the versatility of the Multistrada
1200 and the pilots who rode it to victory over three
consecutive years.
Arrick Maurice
Not only this, but a new breed of Pikes Peak competitor
would surly emerge to take on the mountain road
course. All things considered, the question for 2012
was not so much ‘if’ the record would be broken, but
by how much and by whom?
The days leading up to the race were typical of Pikes
Peak with three grueling sunrise practice sessions
culminating on the third day with a qualifying session.
Carlin Dunne would qualify first with Greg Tracy just
four seconds behind him. In the 1205 cc class, the next
closest competitor in a field of KTM, BMW and Harley
Davidsons would actually be a Ducati Streetfighter
piloted by Frenchman Bruno Langlois who trailed Tracy
by eight seconds.
With one day between qualifying and race day,
the pilots and teams have time to make any final
adjustments prior to the race. This day happened to
bring with it ominous clouds and rain which would
surely change the dynamics of the course for race day.
The clouds parted and the sun gleamed as teams,
pilots and spectators gathered on the mountain the
Sunday morning of the race. The seemingly perfect
conditions coupled with the newly surfaced course
seemed to indicate that the record set just one year
earlier would soon be all but forgotten. A welcome
change from the years prior, the motorcycles would
start the day with the 1205 cc class running at the
back of the pack of bikes. A seemingly controlled
chaos, the frenzy of motorcycles fire off the start line
one by one until Dunne and Tracy finally make their

fibre details in the front air intakes, mudguard, sceen and Termignoni silencers. In addition the bike has the stunning new 1199

Antilock
Braking System
ABS Bosch, the secret of perfect braking
Photo: Milagro
The ABC’s of road safety start with ABS, the
acronym for Antilock Braking System. It would
take an engineer to fully understand how the
system works from a technical point of view.
What happens from a practical standpoint is that
when you brake as hard as you can, an electric
control unit corrects the locking action of the
wheels, increasing and decreasing the pressure
of the brake pads on the discs at speeds up to
20 times per second. In essence, your constant
pressure on the brakes prompts the ABS to react
by braking intermittently (though the pauses are
imperceptible).
And the result? In the case of sudden braking
or slippery ground, the ABS adjusts the brake
pressure in a calibrated manner to ensure the
best possible stop on any type of surface.
Monster Diesel
Be brave, be unique
20
21
The wheels don’t lock up, the motorcycle doesn’t lose
grip and the gyrostatic effect is maintained, ensuring
command of the vehicle. In conclusion, you don’t skid.
Even a non-expert rider can brake fully, reducing both
the risk of falling and the required stopping distance
significantly.
The new Ducati Multistrada, equipped with several
of the latest devices that contribute to a high level
of driver protection, mounts an innovative Bosch
ABS system developed exclusively for motorbikes,
which can be turned off in sporty driving situations.
The Bosch ABS has been designed for maximum
performance, efficiency and, last but not least, to limit
overall weight. The system adopted is currently the
most compact on the market. Early systems weighed
over 4 kg, but the new generation from Bosch weighs
less than 1 kg and is extremely compact.
Through the use of ABS, security has taken on real
value. The contribution of ABS to road safety has been
confirmed by numerous international studies. To date,
ABS is the most effective security technology for
motorcycles, and that is why all new Ducati models
have it as standard equipment.

NEW
HYPERMOTARD
Photo: Giovanni De Sandre, Piero Casadei
Hypermotard
Even champions fall in love
Nomen est omen: a name is a portent. The idea could
not fit the new Hypermotard better.
Starting from a blank piece of paper, Ducati artfully
combined style and performance, sportiness and fun.
When Nicky Hayden was on the premises to perform
a series of tests with the MotoGP team, his first
reaction when he saw the new creation was “Wow!”.
The MotoGP rider has always been a Hypermotard
enthusiast and project manager Federico Sabbioni,
in charge of the whole development project, took
advantage of the Kentucky Kid’s presence to show
him all the secrets of his new creation.
32
33
The 2013 Hypermotard takes a huge step forward
as far as the engine is concerned, substituting
the previous two valve per cylinder air cooled
model with a four valve, liquid cooled unit. The
821 cc engine size allows for the combination of
110 horsepower with high usability and smooth
riding. This Testastretta 11° engine offers a
smooth progression and guarantees a high level
of performance even at a low RPM.
Nicky took notice of the latest features of the new
Hypermotard right away. Soon after getting on
the bike, he said: “I like the commanding riding
position, the rider’s arms are under less stress.”
Indeed, the new Hypermotard offers a more
comfortable riding position than the previous
model and this makes it a very easy to ride bike,
even for every day use.
The standard issue Hypermotard is available in
Red or Matte Black, and the SP version comes
with the Corse colour scheme, thus integrating
racing elements in the Hypermotard concept.
With a deliberately higher frame, adjustable back
Öhlins suspension with increased stroke, the
Marzocchi aluminium fork inspired by the 1199
Panigale and a dry weight of only 171 Kg, the
Hypermotard SP is the ideal bike for use on the
track too.
The latest Hyperstrada completes this new
generation of motorcycles. The Hyperstrada
pushes the boundaries of travel experience even
further and is ideal for riders who love windy
roads, even when they are found far from home.
A standard issue windshield, a pair of side bags
and special attention to ergonomics are only
some of the features that make the Hyperstrada
suitable for medium to long journeys.

35
Without taking his eyes off the bike as
Federico talked him through the features of the
Hypermotard SP, Nicky exclaimed: “The trellis
frame stands out marvellously, the forged rims
are great and the exhaust pipe is absolutely
wicked.”
As far as electronics are concerned, the
Hypermotard is equipped with all the Ducati
36
state-of-the-art technology: from the ‘Riding Modes’ and ‘Power Modes’ that allow the rider to
choose between three different riding modes – Sport, Touring and Urban (on the SP version they are
called Race, Sport and Wet, just like on the 1199 Panigale) – to the Ducati Safety Pack (ABS + DTC),
a standard issue on all models.
Nicky could not move away from the bike. Despite having loved the old Hypermotard, he really
could not wait to try out the new one. Before leaving, after giving the bike one last look, he said “It’s
going to be an amazing bike to ride! I’ve been thinking of getting a new Ducati for next year. The
new Hypermotard could be the one for me…”

Superbike testing in Mugello with
Troy Bayliss and the 1199 Panigale
The story of Ducati in the World Superbike
Championship is a long history of victories. Each
racing model proved to be a winner, often right from
the start. The 851, 888, 916, 996, 998, 999 bikes were
manufactured in Borgo Panigale before producing
the 1098 R; excellence on the racetrack with 17
Manufacturer’s titles and 14 Rider’s titles. What is the
secret to this continued success?
Developing the racing bike on the track is definitely
an important part of being competitive, but the
process is extremely complex and entrusted mostly
to human subjectivity. We compare the riding styles
and sensations of test riders and racers who are
totally different from one another, knowing that a
truly competitive bike must transmit a good feeling no
matter who is riding.

For racers who demand only the highest
technology and safety, Ducati, in collaboration
with Dainese, has developed an absolutely
unprecedented service.
A technical staff of skilled tailors are ready to
measure the most passionate Ducati riders in
order to create exclusive products, such as the
D-Air Racing custom suit.
This suit is designed to offer maximum protection
and fit. With three accelerometers and three
gyroscopes, it reads the movements of the body in
the event of loss of grip of the bike and inflates to
protect the fall, detecting it in fifteen milliseconds
and inflating in just thirty milliseconds.
Protection is assured by a 4-litre pneumatic
system which protects shoulders, neck, clavicle
and the upper part of the chest.
It doesn’t matter if the riding style is angular
(called “V-shaped” due to the telemetry
trajectories) or round (in this case the
graphics are “U-shaped”), the bike must be
able to satisfy the rider’s basic need to have
the right feeling on the bike. The more a
bike can adapt itself to various demands, the
more racers will ride it to victory – a result
that is far from easy to obtain.
A day of testing requires careful planning
and precise calculations by the development
team and then, once on the track, obsessive
attention to the details that are crucial to
successful racing. Suffice it to say that the
day before the session, the team is already
present on the circuit, setting up the box and
preparing the bike. In order to simulate the
competitive scenario as much as possible,
the development of the tyres the bike will
mount in the race is essential.
The tests can be divided into three types:
tests and development of new components,
reliability tests in which the pilot “grinds
out” kilometres to test the reliability of
the mechanical parts, and performance
tests where the rider brings the bike to the
extreme limits to verify the competitive level.
In addition to the rider, the race engineers
have a fundamental role in the development
team and their job is as difficult as it is
48
delicate. While the design phase requires
objective data and calculations so that the
bike is designed and built on solid grounds,
in the tuning stages or during the weekend
of the race, the race engineers must be able
to interpret the language and the sensations
of the rider, translating them into timely
feedback to those who will be working on
the bike. It is a job similar to that of a coach
or a psychologist, one who never loses
sight of engineering and the interpretation
of telemetry data. Sometimes they have to
contradict objective data in hand with the
feelings and impressions of the rider that
have no basis in reality.
Only with the sum of all these components,
technological and human resources that
are difficult to quantify, can one expect to
obtain a competitive and winning bike, as the
Ducatis in Superbike have always proved to
be.
When a Ducati Superbike wins on the track,
one must understand that the result depends
on engineering and technology, which in the
Bolognese factory are top-level, but also on
the enormous passion spent by all those
people who worked on it.

There is also the opportunity to customise the

The customisations can also be applied to the

WPM stands for World President Meeting, the meeting of presidents.
So what does that mean? A lot, an awful lot, really. For a passionate Ducati
rider like the president of a Desmo Owner Club, it is an acronym that
evokes happy memories, great expectations and the opportunity to meet
with friends from all over the world who share the same love for the Ducati
brand.
able to talk about them and share ideas and solutions with other
Presidents from all over the world is extremely valuable.
This year, more than 50 people participated, including 5 female
presidents. I represent Ducati.net, and have been the president since
2001, the year in which the Club became part of the family of Ducati
Official Clubs.
It’s the annual meeting where the Presidents of the DOCs and the
company’s management get together to talk about new ideas and
exchange information about the life and future of the clubs in an open and
honest way, as is the custom in Bologna. But we had better take a step
backwards: what is a Desmo Owner Club and what is its role?
When I arrived in Borgo Panigale, I found a long line of bikes along
the entire building. More than 50! Each one was customised with the
flag of the country of the President to whom it was assigned. It was
also an opportunity to greet old friends and make new ones – smiles
and hugs out under the bright Bologna sun. A few forms to fill out, a
visit to the factory and then we were off! A fleet of bright red Ducatis
winding their way to the sea.
The question gives us the opportunity to talk about the passion of Ducati
riders and especially those people who have the responsibility to act
as Ducati ambassadors. The presidents have a task that is not simple.
They are the beating heart of Ducati passion and the driving force of local
activities; no matter which Ducati you ride, the DOC is the ideal home for
all Ducati riders and the catalyst for the many qualities of the red bikes
from Borgo Panigale reflected in their desmodromic hearts.
This is why Ducati has been committed for over 10 years to constantly
increasing its support for the DOCs. But the bikes need to be riden, and
enjoyed on the street and on the track. Meeting up without having a story
to tell about riding a Ducati would not have the same charm, and this is
why each WPM begins in the best possible way: by sharing the excitement
of an amazing ride.
It’s kind of like a meeting of the knights of the round table: instead of steeds
there are “a herd of horses” and roads to conquer, but the friendliness and
sense of brotherhood is the same as in ancient times.
For this reason, the voice and narration of Vicki Smith, President of the
DOC Ducati.net, demonstrates that being a member or a president of a
DOC fully transcends gender, ethnicity, nationality, and more – there is only
one bond: DUCATI.
“Being invited to the WPM means counting the days left before the big
event, waiting anxiously to discover the details of the adventure to come.
We know that each year we will discover new places, spectacular roads,
local cultures, gourmet specialities, and meet with the people from Ducati,
perhaps getting a glimpse of the new products to be released in the
following months. For the warriors of the Ducati brand, the WPM is their
just reward.
For each president, the WPM is an important moment. There are many
ways to organise the activities and life of a Club, and for this reason, being
52
Our first stop was for a regular event that is always full of surprises:
the mini-motard inter-club race. This was followed immediately be the
first of a long and unforgettable series of dinners, served under the
open air. We went back to Cattolica to sleep in a hotel, and instead
of numbers, the rooms displayed the names of the most famous
MotoGP racetracks. It was Saturday evening, almost midnight. Music,
carefree people on holiday and the roar of Ducati bikes. For me, that is
the sound of the Italian summer.
Every morning we woke to a new adventure on winding roads,
crossing three different regions of Italy, which were chosen for the
excellent riding conditions and beautiful panorama. The day’s program
was reasonable and gave us enough time to take photos, enjoy a
long lunch or visit the places we had reached. In Gubbio we visited a
Roman amphitheatre and a neighbourhood market, where we bought
an old Ducati radio advertisement, perfect for framing. In Assisi we
enjoyed a meringue dessert while sitting on the marble steps of a
magnificent square.
Almost every evening began with an aperitif and dinner lasted until
late. Wine and conversation flowed under the light of the moon. It
was an atmosphere that was created repeatedly that entire week:
incredible dinners at large tables, discussions about our DOCs, our
Ducatis, the dealers, our countries and roads. I feel very lucky to have
been part of all this. The days that preceded the WPM were carefully
planned and made it possible for us to appreciate Italian history, art
and culture. To understand Ducati, it is essential to understand that
“Made in Italy” is not only an adhesive on the fuel tank, but a genuine
declaration of lifestyle.
It was great just to be welcomed like royalty for the
simple fact that I was riding a Ducati. In Assisi we parked
in the Piazza del Comune, a concession made directly
by the Mayor, who not only posed with us for a photo,
but accompanied us personally on a visit to his offices.
Entering the walls of the city, we came to a massive
Botero sculpture, which kindly extended its shade onto our
works of art, the Ducati bikes.
In Tavullia we were guests of the Bar Pizzeria da Rossi,
where we enjoyed a spectacular sunset. Every day of the
program was organized to give us incredible emotions,
and the most intense was without a doubt the last one –
the WPM itself. At the Marco Simoncelli World Circuit of
Misano we met the entire company, including Gabriele Del
Torchio, President and CEO, as well as Claudio Domenicali,
General Manager. Following a long and intense discussion,
the evening culminated in a gala dinner in evening dress.
Simply fantastic. The evening was the time to make toasts,
exchange e-mail addresses, and obviously, wonder where
we would be going next year! The countdown to 2013 has
already begun.”
The fresco of emotions that Vicki evokes is one of
many possible interpretations of the WPM, but another
president might prefer to speak of the pulsing adrenaline
during the climb towards the Monti Sibillini, and others
might remember the indelible joy of “painting” the curves
in the natural reserve of the Parco della Gola Rossa, and
so on endlessly.
All the stories are different, there is no one right way to be
a Ducati rider. There is only your way.
The WPM is the chance for ambassadors of Ducati passion
from all over the world to share their unique experiences,
creating strong ties that strengthen into friendships,
which, for a Ducati rider, are of fundamental importance.

THE DIAVEL
LOOK

Undisputed hero
A bike that is absolutely unique in shape and substance, so different from
all others that there can be no comparison.
A piece of extraordinary technology and design that is the embodiment
of power, even when the engine is not running. Eager for constant
improvement, the Diavel has a new look and 2013 sees a new colour
scheme and two new models.
A white strip over a red or blue background, white rims, radiator covers
and a carbon fibre roadster windshield are the main aesthetic features
of this bike. A direct tribute to the world of racing, it was introduced to
highlight the competitive spirit of a bike that loves to attract everyone’s
attention before disappearing in a flash.
56
57
Brutal charm
The heart of Diavel bikes does not lie only in
performance. The powerful but sophisticated design
embodies the bold nature of a bike of unmistakable
appearance. A quality that is most evident in the
new Diavel Dark. Black, powerful and aggressive.
The sophisticated design is combined with the
exuberance of its 162 horsepower. The striking engine
colour dominates the details, revealing the Diavel’s
very essence.
Dark Armour jacket, Diavel-X helmet, Company
leather trousers and Company boots.

Strength in innovation
The Diavel Strada is a new addition to the family. It does not sacrifice the beauty and design of the
original version but adds an attention to comfort that makes the bike suitable for long journeys.
Designed to carry two people, it features side luggage, back rest and handles for the passenger,
touring seat and windshield. The new riding position has been moved further back and, with
higher bars (which include passenger grips), guarantees maximum comfort during long journeys.

TECHNOLOGY
and
COMFORT
Photo: Giovanni De Sandre
It is a defining element of a rider’s style. It
is something to be proud of, like the dark
tread on the shiny tyres, like the four zeros
on the speedometer, undeniable proof
that the motorbike is ready for the road. In
addition to being a representation of the rider
to the world, the helmet saves lives. It is a
rider’s faithful squire; rider and helmet are
inseparable.
The outer shell of Ducati helmets is made
of laminated composite fiber or fiberglass.
There are different lines to chose from;
Company, Multistrada, Ducati Corse and
Riders. Thanks to the newest technologies
and materials, our helmets combine light
weight and high quality. Reduced weight
is the result of using the best and most
resistant materials – carbon fibre in particular.
Less is more.
If the hi-tech materials of the exterior intrigue,
the interior surprises. The lining is made of
EPS which, thanks to specific treatments,
is thicker on the sides and softer in the
middle. In this way, it combines comfort with
resistance to impact and is ideal for young
riders and veteran champions alike. The
helmet makes no distinctions - thanks to its
padded lining it is perfectly adaptable.
Do the right thing
A helmet is much more than a form of
protection. Just ask professional motorcycle
riders: they can talk for hours about why they
chose those graphics, that colour scheme
and about the meaning behind the words
that make it unique.
The helmet is therefore a means for
motorcycle
riders
to
express
their
personality, almost like a part of their body. All
motorcyclists, the modern knights, choose a
particular style and a particular colour for very
specific reasons.
Our helmet tells everyone who we are.
62
after five years, it is time to choose a new
helmet.
However, before choosing a hemet, it is
important to take into consideration the kind
of bike.
On a faired superbike with a highly
aerodynamic design, a full-face helmet is
always the best solution. The full-face helmet
provides the safest option which takes
precedence over variables such taste, colour,
graphics or materials. Choosing safety first
when selecting a helmet is as imperative as
the decision to put a helmet on every time
we get on a bike.
Gore-Tex
He had been trying and trying for months,
with rare perseverance.
He would stare at a glass of water and try and
find a way of stopping the liquid as he poured
it over the fabrics his company produced.
Carefully designed vents keep fresh air
flowing through and while some may believe
they are there simply to add to the helmet’s
sporty appearance, they do an incredible job
of ventilating the interior. In line with Ducati’s
design philosophies, form and function go
hand in hand.
Not content with that, he also wanted to stay
dry while he engaged in activities like running
and performing physically demanding tasks
under the hot sun... whatever happened, he
did not want to sweat.
It was 1972 and America was under the spell
of the Rolling Stones and their Tumbling Dice.
And suddenly, a stroke of genius: “Water
particles are larger than sweat particles,
which are made of water vapour.
Does the ‘right’ helmet exist? Of course it
does. First of all, the rider must like the looks
of the helmet, but that is not everything.
As we know, it is not just a question of
aesthetics. The helmet has to fit perfectly:
neither too big nor too small. Another
element that can often be forgotten when
emotions overpower reason is noise. A
helmet should not isolate the rider from their
surroundings.
So, if I can create a fabric designed to let
sweat particles out, water particles will not
be able to get in.” So that is exactly what he
did. Wilbert Gore, a US textile entrepreneur,
invented and patented the GORE-TEX®
membrane, i.e. 9 billion microscopic holes in
one square inch (6.4516 square cm) of fabric.
Wilbert and his son Robert received the allimportant honour of a place in the National
Inventors Hall of Fame.
On a motorbike, to hear is to see, so a high
level of attention needs to be paid to the fit,
which depends on the shape of the head. In
addition, helmets have a limited life-span.
It is not enough to substitute them after a
fall or when the shell gets badly scratched.
Through time, the different materials and
the ways they are combined deteriorate. So,
For us humans, this invention lead to the

magical fabric: waterproof but transpiring at
the same time.
quality technology applied to clothes.
Ducati has chosen GORE-TEX® for its
touring wear range in order to guarantee its
riders comfort and protection in all weather
conditions. For the more specialist items,
Ducati uses GORE-TEX® Pro, a three layer
combination, a sort of ‘sandwich’ consisting
of an outer fabric, the GORE-TEX®
membrane and finally the internal lining. The
result is an innovative and universal item of
clothing.
Basically, thanks to the three layers that
are the essence of GORE-TEX® Pro Ducati
jackets, the jacket is able to adapt to
different external temperatures while at the
same time preserving the biker’s ideal body
temperature. It is almost like wearing three
shifting pieces of clothing at the same time,
so that comfort and the pleasure of riding are
preserved.
In this way the Ducati GORE-TEX® Pro range
adds another important asset – comfort – to
its waterproof and transpiration qualities.
This further enhances the pleasure and
freedom of riding a motorbike.
GORE-TEX® revolutionised the textile
industry and soon came to embody the idea
of technological clothing, meaning high-

Ducati Scrambler,
an american dream
High, large handlebars, slender tank decorated with chrome
plating on the sides, neoprene shock protector, aggressive
pick up speed and the unmistakable roar of the exhaust. In one
word: Scrambler, an ode to freedom. Created to satisfy the
desires of the American market, the Scrambler has become
an icon among dual-sport bikes, and has contributed to the
success of the Ducati brand on the other side of the ocean.
Innovative at the time, an icon now, the Scrambler embodied
the dream of a whole generation who wanted to spend their
carefree hours of spare time out of doors.
Designed by the engineer Fabio Taglioni at the beginning of
the 60s, the Scrambler initially had a 250 cc single cylinder
engine, which later evolved into the new generation of
monobloc engines that could provide for engines up to
500 cc – the limit for single cylinder motorcycles at the time
– the so-called “wide crankcase”, the most powerful and upto-date series of single cylinder engines produced by Ducati.
Even nowadays, when a Scrambler goes by, the eyes of a
motorcycling enthusiast are drawn to this bike, capable of
luring you off the made-up roads and onto the first dirt track,
on the look out for a river bank or other choice spot to stop and
enjoy a moment of pure freedom.

a variety of driving scenarios. Situated in
the Province of Lecce, the facility is a highspeed testing centre, the perfect place to
put the performance and stability of Ducati
motorcycles to the test.
and counter slopes that force the load onto
the vertical axis. The width of the driving
area varies from 12.5 to 15 m, like a real
track, and the grip is of medium consistency
reproducing realistic driving conditions.”
The high-speed track stretches over 700
acres, is 12.5 km in length and is perfectly
circular. There are four lanes for cars and
motorcycles, with an inclination that varies
between 4% and 22.5 % for a total width of
16 m. The inclination of the lanes is such that
the rider in the outermost lane can keep a
straight steering trajectory when driving at up
to 240 km/h.
The handling track is a technological wonder
and the best in Europe. It is 6222 m long
and features a series of bends with differing
curvature, as well as straight stretches and
hairpin turns that are specifically designed to
test the dynamic reaction of the vehicles.
In other words, at the so-called ‘neutral
speed’, which is different for each of the
lanes, it is possible to drive as if on a never
ending straight line, without the need to
declutch, as if riding on the salt flats – actually
even better. All of the new generation Ducati
motorcycles are tested here.
This remarkable track accurately simulates
stretches of some of the most important
race circuits in the world and, thanks to the
mild climate of Southern Italy, it is available
all year round, 24 hours a day.
It is on this track that Ducati motorcycles are
thoroughly tested. The aim is the usual one:
to guarantee our future customers the best
riding experience possible. That quality of
experience is also linked to the number and
frequency of maintenance intervals.
Our engineers are constantly at work
to try and reduce the need for this kind
of service interval. For example, on the
new Testastretta 11° engine and on the
Superquadro of the 1199 Panigale, it is
possible for us to recommend a valve only
every 24,000 kilometers.
These are just a few examples of the way in
which our scrupulous attention to technical
details, the choice of the best materials and
constant testing allow us to attain exceptional
results.
In addition to the high-speed track, there are
40 km of unpaved track for off-road testing
and a 6.2 km handling circuit. This is a truly
unique place for vehicle testing.
“This is a futuristic facility that has no
equal anywhere in the world and to this
day I am impressed at the far-sightedness
demonstrated by the person who designed it
over 40 years ago,” explains engineer Franco
Nobile, managing director of Nardò Technical
Centre.
Ducati testing continues in Nardò
The improvement in the reliability of Ducati
motorcycles is verified by the test riders of
Borgo Panigale through constant trials, which
are very taxing for both the riders and the
vehicles whether on the road or on the track.
84
These tests improve reliability and check whether the periodical maintenance targets have
been successfully achieved. The targets are set in order to lower the frequency of service
intervals and, consequently, the cost to the customers.
In order to test its bikes in absolute safety, Ducati relies increasingly on the hi-tech Nardò
centre. The facility is owned by the Volkswagen group and allows the testers to recreate

WDW: Unforgettable Emotions
in Everyone’s Eyes.
It is my first time. I am incredibly excited. One by one,
with extreme care and some difficulty, I put on all the
accessories I have been given, even though the suit
and boots make my movements slow and clumsy.
Being in the pits is an incredible and fascinating
experience. I am only used to seeing this stage of
the circuit on TV: the riders preparing to get on their
powerful bikes. This time I am one of the protagonists.
I almost feel like a professional rider. I grab my helmet.
I’m ready.
The circuit in Misano Adriatico has undergone a
merry and colourful invasion and it is hot and muggy
under the scorching June sun. It is one of the few
moments of World Ducati Week in which there is no
track event scheduled and the silence in the starting
box is almost surreal. The track, on the other hand, is
buzzing with the cheerful shouts of the many Ducati
enthusiasts who are celebrating their passion for the
legendary Reds of Borgo Panigale on the Planet of the
Champions.
88
89
The desire to be both here but also in some other
part of the circuit is a constant element of the last
few days. This is because Ducati has put together
an incredibly interesting schedule for this edition
of WDW: there is always something going on that
you wouldn’t want to miss.
In the shadow of the pits, I manage to pay
attention to the words of Dario Marchetti, the
professional motorbike rider who is telling me
what I should do on the track in order to enjoy
myself as much as I can without taking any risks.
“The important thing is that you hold on tight, that
when we go into a bend you follow the movement
of the bike with your body and that you don’t slide
90
into me too hard when I brake so that I can
move freely.”
He talks to me very calmly, as though
we were two friends having coffee, but I
suddenly feel a mixture of adrenalin and
fear wash over me and my heartbeat starts
accelerating.
He notices my state of mind, makes fun of
me a bit and then says: “Just wait, you’ll
never forget this.”
The latest 1199 Panigale is right in front of
me in all its power and beauty, and while I
think about the 195 horsepower that will
shortly carry me onto the track, Dario is
gently stroking the bike, almost as if to tell
me “you have nothing to worry about, you’re
in safe hands”.
This bike is a Ducati like all the others, but
also unique as it is a two-seater.
Dario gets on the bike. I am his passenger.
I start thinking that the reason I am here now
is that many others would have liked to be,
but nobody was brave enough to actually do
it. This actually makes me feel even more
excited. I slip my helmet on and we’re off.
It only takes me a few seconds to fully
understand the meaning of the words “you’ll
never forget this”: first gear, second gear,
third gear… the front wheel hasn’t even
touched the ground yet.
91
After a few metres I also understand that
it would be totally useless to oppose the
will of the rider and the power of the bike,
so I decide to let go and follow their every
movement.
On a bend I brush the asphalt with my knee,
and on straight stretches I try to fight the
force of the air, which, at a speed of 275
Km/h, creates a degree of resistance I would
never have imagined.
Lap after lap, as the battle of emotions
unfolds inside me, pleasure gradually prevails
over fear and my heart is beating so hard I
feel as though it might jump out of my chest:
I am having the time of my life.
Only the helmet is stopping me from
screaming with happiness.
When we get back to the pits my legs are
shaking and I can no longer feel my hands
and arms, which for the last ten minutes
have been fiercely grasping the handlebars
fitted over the tank of the exceptional
two-seater.
INFO
I take off the suit and boots, regaining some
freedom of movement, and after saying
goodbye to Dario, I return to the track among
the excited crowd and the thousands of
perfectly parked Ducatis - just the sight of
them is incredible.
I am still so excited I feel almost lost, and my
eyes are shining with happiness.
As I come out of the pits I catch the gaze
of a guy who has just been watching the
spectacular performance of the stuntmen
and motocross freestylers. His eyes are just
as excited as mine.
The girl standing next to me has just taken
part in the DRE and she had great fun learning
to improve her bike riding abilities with the
Ducati safe-driving courses. Her eyes also

show the same passion and emotion. The
friend she is talking to is telling her about a
lesson she attended at the Ducati University.
A short way from them, a father and his
son are heading to the track for an event
not to be missed: the Diavel Drag Race;
the acceleration competition in which all
professional Ducati riders challenge eachother.
They will then move on to the evening
show in Piazzale Roma in Riccione - the boy
is holding a flier about the event. After all,
in this edition of WDW there are plenty of
events planned outside the track too.
He is a fan of the Ducati All Stars, a band
made up of internationally famous rock stars
and he wouldn’t miss the show for the world.

I stop to look at the multitude of people
around me. They come from all over the
world.
A group of Australians has just experienced
the incredible Audi Taxi Race, while two
Russians are laughing as they think back to
the exhilerating events of one of the WDW
Tours, the motorcycling itineraries devised
to discover the most beautiful roads in
Romagna. Their eyes too are full of happiness
and elation.
It is in this moment, with my legs still weak
from all the emotion, that I realize that I am
not one of the few lucky people to have
ridden the 1199 two-seater Panigale on the
track, but just one of the 65,000 enthusiasts
who, from 21st to 24th of June, shared the
unforgettable experience of World Ducati
Week.

The new Ducati 1199 Panigale is a perfect
combination of engineering and design. The
latest technology and aesthetic research
converge to produce a masterpiece whose
charm has spread beyond the boundaries
of the motorcycling industry to fascinate the
whole world.
The new Ducati 1199 Panigale frees itself
of any unnecessary details resulting in the
forms and lines of a motorbike devised to
attain aesthetic perfection.
The light, shining on its perfect forms,
catches the dynamicity of a solid but agile
body, elegant and powerful at the same time.
A single thread of total harmony runs from
the front fairing all the way to the back of the
bike, where the rear light is artfully set into
the slender tail.
Rounded forms are counterbalanced by
bold, empty spaces. Only partly concealed,
the engine and the exhaust pipe tease the
eyes, creating a perfect balance between
what is seen and what remains unseen. The
resulting design covers every aspect of the
concept of beauty. The new Ducati 1199
Panigale is the celebration of Ducati design,
recognized across the planet as the highest
embodiment of motorcycling aesthetics.
And 2013 sees the addition of the white
Ducati 1199 Panigale: the perfect hue for the
pure and elegant forms of this bike.

Mission: red planet
“Have you ever seen a city turning Red?”
For me, it took ten countries and ten thousand
kilometres to turn Misano, in Italy, Red. This was
the Mission. To reach the World Ducati Week 2012
taking place in Misano after riding from Dubai to
Italy via Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary,
Slovenia, Slovakia and Austria.
I had a very important task. I had to take one of the best
touring (and most beautiful) motorcycles in the world
back to it’s birthplace, across the ten countries while
capturing it in the incredibly diverse environments
and landscapes I would be going through.
Photo: Sundeep Gajjar
Being a photographer and a graphic designer, I knew that the
Multistrada 1200 would make my photos look even better. The Italians
sure know how to marry design and performance in a way no one else
does. The sharp beak of the MTS looks like it is meant to cut through
the air, be it thick along the coast or thin in some of the highest
mountains with a élan that only a Ducati can afford. I am also a gadget
freak, so naturally I felt home with all the useful electronics crammed
inside it, making the ride more pleasurable and safe.
the greenest and wildest mountain slopes
made up for that. The road to Devil’s Throat
through the Trigrad Gorge was fantastic
and scarily narrow sometimes. In such
situations I was glad the Multistrada was
relatively light and nimble compared to
other manufacturer’s bikes in the same
category.
The Multistrada that I was going to ride also had few, but choicest
accessories like the rear top case, side panniers, Ducati tankbag to
host all my camera equipment for easy access and a centre stand.
I felt at home the very first time I flung my legs over the MTS. The
bike seemed to impart a confidence that is hard to come by – it
had the power, it had the ergonomics, the storage space and most
importantly, the name ensuring that not only I get the amicable stares
but the respect too.
I also paid a visit to Ducati Sofia, in Bulgaria’s
capital. The city seemed devoid of any kind
of traffic or problems associated with big
cities. My last day in Bulgaria was spent
enjoying the tranquil and beautiful museum
village of Koprivshtitsa, with its almost
400 beautiful houses made in authentic
Bulgarian architectural style.
The ride started on 19th of July 2012 from the Ducati Dubai showroom.
It was hot, really hot, but it did not stop me from taking a brief tour
in and around Dubai visiting the sand dunes plus landmarks like the
world’s tallest building and a must visit for every Ducatisti – the Ducati
Café in the humungous Dubai mall. Not only that, I rode 150 kms
one-way to Abu Dabhi to visit the under construction world’s largest
Ducati showroom. The Multistrada’s console showed 47 degrees, but
I was sure that it must have been fifty and yet the bike performed
flawlessly.
I had to skip Iran and restart the trip from Istanbul in Turkey. Running
into roadblocks, both literal and figurative, only strengthened my
resolve to complete a roadtrip. So I picked up a new Multistrada from
the nice people at Ducati Istanbul.
Staying true to the Ducati family spirit, the
people at Ducati Sofia helped with a small
tour of their capital, despite the fact that
none of them spoke English. Our passion
for Ducatis was enough to create a bond!
Turkey - This country was a fantastic surprise with beautiful villages,
like Safranbolu (where some of the world’s highest quality saffron is
produced), and stunning landscapes of Cappadocia region in central
Turkey. The Multistrada simply munched the distances like no one’s
business. The people in Turkey are amongst the warmest with
gestures like offering the traditional Turkish black tea at petrol stations
being common. Incidentally the Turkish language also has quite a few
words common with India’s own national language – Hindi!
My last day in Turkey saw me visit the ancient outdoor city museum of
Ephesus and then the World War II site at the Gallipoli Peninsula where
I experienced one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. I pondered upon
technology then, creating a wonder like the Multistrada on the one
hand and untold suffering of the war on another.
One of the highlights of the trip and the high
points of Romania, pun intended, were the
two days in the Carpathians. Starting with
the Dracula’s castle in Bran to the ‘world’s
best road’ – the Transfagarasan.
The road starts from the small village of
Bascov (near town of Pitesi) and ends
in Cârtisoara in Romania - the DN7C.
This, gentlemen, is the real deal – the
Transfagarasan Road. 146 kms, out of
which 90 kms is the stuff video games are
made up of.
I exited from Turkey to Greece at the Ipsala border without any issue. I
just had to take a green insurance and was off after immigrations. This
was my first experience outside of regular immigrations at an airport!
Felt a little surreal! The Multistrada drew quite a lot of attention from
the border officials throughout the roadtrip.
Greece had long been on my wish-list and I felt great riding towards
my first Greek city – Thessaloniki. The Greek landscapes and natural
beauty won over the city and so I headed towards Mt. Olympus and
Mt. Pelion area. Zagora in Mt. Pelion was especially beautiful, I could
hardly differentiate between the sea and the sky merging into the
horizon. Amazing.
I approached the road from the southern end, from Pitesi. The road
starts off as any other ‘normal’ road. Green, quite and narrow. Decent
tarmac quality. Then it starts to build up. The turns start getting
tighter, many of them decreasing radius. And suddenly past a turn,
the landscape hits you. You see a string of asphalt carelessly thrown
amidst high mountains in front. And then I remember what they said
in Top Gear – ‘it seems to be made up by stitching the best corners
from all the racetracks of the world’. Agreed!
The highlight in Greece was the Meteora Monastery area with its
orthodox Greek monasteries literally hanging off cliffs! The final day
in Greece went to the beautiful manmade Lake Plastiras at sunset.
To my pleasant surprise, there was a lot of snow along the
Transfagarasan, with a couple of small avalanches spilling the snow
on the road as well. The nimble and light MTS, switched to the Urban
Mode, lest I encounter black ice on the road, was the perfect bike
here.
The very next day I treated myself by riding the Transalpina Highway,
which is the highest road in Romania.
The two countries that I was looking forward to were Bulgaria and
Romania. Both of these are relatively ‘lesser-known and unsung’.
They were also a little ‘raw’ compared to the other western European
countries.
The Transalpina is the DN67C (DN stands for Drumul National which
means National Road ). It runs, from South to North, Novaci to Parang
towns in Romania and is considered to be one of the most spectacular
mountain roads in the Carpathian Mountains.
The moment I entered Bulgaria from Greece (from Promachonas),
I was thrown into the Western Rhodope Mountains. It grew really
chilly en route Plovdiv, the second largest city of Bulgaria. However,
102
Next up was Dracula’s land – Romania.
I was very excited about this one.
The first day saw me reach Bucharest,
its capital, where I was privy to some
wonderful hospitality from the Ducatisti
there. Beautiful Bucharest gave me a few
great friends too.
The only thing that I was missing here was the snow like the
Transfagarasan, but then that is more a variable than a permanent
feature.

Sundeep has ridden with: Flow fabric jacket,
Flow fabric and leather gloves, Strada DS openface helmet and Tudor Fastrider watch.
For me the sight of this peak on the road with the road snaking down
was worth more than anything else so far – it was photogenic as
hell, rare as the unicorn. From Romania it was on to Hungary, more
specifically Budapest. That was one of the most beautiful European
cities I had been to. I especially remember taking the Multistrada up in
the middle of the Hero’s square.
Next up was Slovakia, the High Tatras range. I experienced the lowest
temperatures here. After an overnight transit via Bratislava, the capital
of Slovakia, I entered Austria.
The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is a high alpine road running in
Austria, around 100 kms from Innsbruck. It is beautiful, but unfortunately
one has to pay 22 Euros to get in (!) and it is very crowded. Better
option is the Stelvio. From Austria I entered Slovenia and paid a visit
to Ljubljana, the capital, from where I retired at Kranja Gora, hill village
for the night. I narrowly missed riding the road to Mangart, which is
one of the highest roads in Slovenia, due to scheduled construction
on the road.
The penultimate day saw me enter Gorizia, on the border of Slovenia
and Italy, where I was hosted by DOC Gorizia and then escorted to the
World Ducati Week in Misano. Huge thanks to the DOC Gorizia club
for their hospitality!
As expected, I experienced not just the different cultures of ten
104
countries in the ride but also some extreme weather conditions.
Riding through rain and sleet, at times on roads flanked with snow
and black ice with some gravel roads thrown in too.
A few days saw me do 600+ kms with just one odd fuel break. Through
all this I must admit that the 150 horses of raw power out of the 1198
Testastretta 11° engine mill was so intoxicating that riding in any mode
(Urban, Enduro or Touring) other than ‘Sport’ was often not an option.
The Enduro mode though allowed the MTS to be naughtier on the dirt,
while the Urban mode made the task of handling the black ice laden
roads of the Transfagarasan an easy job.
The proof of Ducati making some of the best motorcycles in the world
with one important ingredient – passion, was at the WDW.
65,000 people visited it in four days. Red and Ducati were omnipresent,
and the passion was more like religious zeal than a liking.
To describe the World Ducati Week as an ‘event’ would be a gross
understatement. It was a melting pot of an insane number of people
whose lives are defined by the motorcycle they ride and their age
by the odometer readings of their Ducatis. Their god is not up in the
sky or in their hearts; it is often one of the men riding on the racing
circuits. Their religion is what xBhp and I term as ‘Bikeism’. Their
meditation is strapping a helmet and shutting out all the extraneous
noise but that of the motor below them. They are almost cyborgs,
with the motorcycles acting as extensions of
their arms. They get a high even when they open
the petrol cap for a refuel. For them Ducati Red is
the only red that exists in this world. I was lucky
and honored to be a drop in this ocean and I truly
hope and pray to keep doing mile after mile and
discover each nook and corner of our blue planet
and turn it red…For me, the icing on the cake
was to meet Valentino Rossi at the WDW!
The final statistics stood at 10,000 kms, 10
countries, 25 riding days, 47 degrees maximum
temperature (in Abu Dabhi), 6 degrees minimum
(in High Tatras, Slovakia), 6000 photos, 30+ hours
of video, 20+ mountain passes, and 20,000
words in the daily blogs.
However, the experience was priceless….

Ducati Monster, the legend
The Monster revolutionised the world of motorcycling,
elevating the concept of ‘naked bike’ and turning it
into the expression of a unique way of being. With
their own customisation, over 250,000 enthusiasts
have made this bike a timeless icon. On the 20th
anniversary of its creation, Ducati celebrates this
symbol of style and originality by reinterpreting the
unique design of the first model.
The Monster was officially presented at the Intermot
Fair in 1992 and was available for purchase from Ducati
stores in 1993, the same period in which Sharon Stone
enthralled the audiences in Basic Instinct, grunge was
spreading thanks to Nirvana’s masterpiece album
Nevermind and Federico Fellini received the Academy
Honorary Award. The introduction of this motorcycle
completely transformed the concept of naked bike,
initiating a veritable movement and inspiring countless
imitations.
Miguel Angel Galluzzi, the designer who created
the Monster, had a very specific idea of motorcycle
in mind: a seat, a tank, an engine, two wheels and
handlebars.
118
119
A minimal concept, which went against the
styles and options that the market offered at
the time. That was the winning concept: the
creation of a bike that was Ducati to the core,
to which the rider could instantly connect
while enjoying the excellent handling this
motorcycle offers. It is a bike that is ideal for
every condition and rediscovers the concept
of riding with pleasure. That is how the M900
was born, with its trellis frame derived from
the 851/888 Superbike and a 904 cc engine.
The Monster achieved immediate success
and opened the doors to a new generation
of Ducati fans. It seemed that all enthusiasts,
as well as many novices of the motorcycling
world, had been waiting for a bike exactly like
this one.
The naked bike freed itself from the aura of
understatement and anonymity and became
the embodiment of spirit, sportiness and
120
individuality. This phenomenon reached its
peak after 1995, when alongside the 900,
Ducati produced the Monster 600. Thanks to
its versatility and usabiltity, it reached an even
larger number of motorcycle enthusiasts.
of offering its clients a ‘blank canvas’ ready
for personalisation. Ducati riders fell in love
with this radical and essential motorcycle. Its
intrinsic charm was of such strength that this
bike too became an icon of style.
The number of Monster fans was constantly
rising and included bank managers,
Hollywood stars, university students, the
biker in battered leathers and the boy next
door in t-shirt and jeans, all of them incredibly
proud of their Monsters. Because – and this
is where the other great revolution lies – no
two Monsters are exactly alike.
The story of the Monster, so full of success,
is also a story of constant technological
evolution which lead to the creation of the
M800, and in 2004, of the Monster S4R.
The Monster is easy to customise and
owners take advantage of this feature to
add details and accessories most suited to
their own personality and riding style. Ducati
took note of this phenomenon and in 1998
launched the Monster Dark with the intent
With its 996 cc Superbike engine, this bike
offered its rider a rush of pure adrenalin. In
2005, it was followed by the S2R, with the
same components as its sister and an 800 or
1000 cc air cooled engine to make its design
even more essential.
The most recent Monster generation,
introduced in 2008, has evolved in appearance
and technological advancements, all the
while preserving the fundamental elements
that had brought it to success.
This, resulting in the birth of the Monster
1100EVO, the ‘Ultimate Monster‘.
Today, the Monster has a bronze coloured
frame, chrome finishes and Ducati ‘86 logo
on the tank, a design that pays tribute to
tradition and carries the bike into a new era.
Unmistakable style combined with incredible
performance: this is the Monster 20th
Anniversary, the motorcycle that continues
to write history.
The first Monster presented in Cologne, Germany in 1992.

racing in front of his hometown crowd this weekend.
After his short heartfelt speech, the crowd erupts in a roar and it hits you…
What other pilot? What other place? What other fans? What other brand
could create such a moment? It is one of pride, it is one of passion and it
is one that won’t soon be forgotten by you or any of your fellow Ducatisti
standing on Ducati Island that sunny day in August, 2012.

Since MotoGP’s return to the United States in 2005, there have been two
words synonymous with Ducati and MotoGP in America; “Ducati Island.”
Nestled within a lagoon between turns two and three at the legendary
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Ducati Island was born to give Ducatisti
from throughout the US a place to come together and experience MotoGP
with one another.
Eight years later, the Island has grown to legendary status as the heartbeat
of MotoGP for Ducatisti and non-Ducatisti alike at both the Red Bull US
Grand Prix and the Red Bull Indianapolis Gran Prix.
From fashion shows to Ducati owner hospitality, Ducati Island bustles with
activity from hours before the gates open on the first day (die-hard Ducatisti
anxious to park on the Island show up early) until the last bike leaves after
the race on Sunday. Fans reminisce and share stories over espresso,
speak with Ducati Service representatives about the latest technologies,
see the latest in apparel, accessories and new Ducati models and even put
their own bikes on display. And lets not forget the rider appearances…

most notably those of hometown hero Nicky Hayden who has graciously
stopped by the Island every year since joining the Ducati Corse team. In
short, Ducati Island is the manifestation of the Ducati brand for Ducatisti
in the US.
“The others try every year to duplicate what Ducati has created, but they
just don’t get it… the soul of Ducati Island lies within the passion of its
fans.” Says comedian and long time Ducatista Alonzo Bodden. Alonzo’s
point is easily demonstrated by the simple fact that Ducati Island is run
almost entirely by volunteers! The soul of Ducati Island, these die-hard
fans come out year after year to work the Island and provide their fellow
Ducatisti with lasting memories.
While Ducati Island continues to evolve year after year, it is built on a solid
foundation of passionate fans that will remain the focus for years to come.
If you have not yet made the pilgrimage to Ducati Island, do yourself a
favor and put it on the calendar for next year.

Ducati and Audi share a common history of race wins and
record-setting runs at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
In 2012, the two brands came together in a collaborative
effort to celebrate their triumphs at the Race to the Clouds.
The initiative would involve a social media campaign driven by
a powerful video starring an all-new Audi RS 5 dressed in a
livery to celebrate Walter Röhrl’s Pikes Peak victory 25 years
ago and a Multistrada 1200 S fully clad in the 2012 Pikes Peak
race livery. The emotionally charged video showcases the
two machines beautifully as they conquer the epic mountain
turn by turn, while paying homage to the rich racing history
woven into the fabric of both of these iconic brands.
