The President Speaks
My dear friends in Rotary
First of all a big thank you to everyone who attended the last
week’s meeting, it was great to see all our members
overloaded with energy and the fellowship was incredible.
Nothing is more encouraging than having all our members
gathered under the same roof and would like to also thank
Rtn Jose for his amazing insight on tele-communication . Not
forgetting the fining session that he conducted with tricky
questions.
For the last 7 weeks we had various activities such as
Kajang Prison project, Kitchen Bundle, Regional Quiz (Johor
Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Penang), ILTS, Three Pillar Seminar
and DG visit. Although it was a tight schedule we still had a
good attendance for all the events, hats off to all those who
gave their time and effort.
The 7th national-level IQuiz will be held on 23rd
August 2014 at Sunway University, it’s the final round of
IQuiz. The atmosphere gets intense as the heat builds up among the Intreractors, as they will
be tested on their knowledge on science, history, geography, film, music and sports. It has
become an eagerly awaited event amongst Interactors with 160 teams from across the country.
I urge all members, spouses and friends to attend the grand finals for the year 2014-2015.
On behalf of our club, I have collected food items such as rice, cooking oil, flour, sugar,
can food, biscuits etc from Giant Hypermarket Kinrara Puchong . It will be distributed to
Shalom Home and St Jude's Home. We were also given the opportunity to collect the groceries
from Giant Hypermarket Klang for the second time. As for the date of collection, we need to
reconfirm with our DG. I sincerely thank both DG and PP Dato Ram for allowing us to collect
the groceries within a short period of time.
Moving on, the 10th installation of SMK Bandar Sunway took place on 16th August
2014. The installation was officiated by Puan Hafsah (Head Mistress) of the school joined by
Puan Usha and other teacher advisors. The students were inspired by the speeches and were
also motivated to continue their good work as Interactors. I would like to thank Rtn John and
Rtn Asvika for attending the installation.
On the same day, Interact Club of SMK Subang Utama carried out out their installation
which was also a marvelous event. We were glad to see the spirit and aura in these students,
who were also inspired by the amazing speech given by the President. Not forgetting PP Diva,
Rtn John and Rtn Asvika who once again gave their time and effort to be part of this
installation.
The heroes from the Rotary Club Bandar Sunway PP Ravi, PP Arasu and Rtn Dinesh
had a war against dengue at SS3 which is known to be the hot spot for dengue cases. Despite
knowing the threats of dengue which claimed 2 lives and it was raining, our heroes when door
to door to educate the residents about the disease. What more can I say, your help and
concern is simply admirable.

Women Empowerment via Holistic Community Development
The Rotary Club of Patan (RCP) has been
supporting the community of Chandihanjyang
since May 2009 through its midday-meals
program at the Devi Bhanjyang Rastriya
Primary School. Chandibhanjyan is a village
of over 5400 inhabitants in Central Nepal. To
ensure a more sustainable source of livelihood
for the underprivileged, rural smallholder
farmers in Chandibhanjyang, the RCP decided
to join hands with Heifer International Nepal
and launch a holistic Community Development Project with the primary goal of empowering
women to uplift their families.
Heifer’s Value-based Holistic Community Development Approach has shown amazing results
in other parts of rural Nepal and around the world. The model involves donating livestock
and providing technical assistance to families, who then ‘pass on the gift’ of their first female
offspring and share their gained knowledge.
Within a short span of 3-4 years, self-help groups that form into Social Entrepreneur
Women Cooperatives will be directly empowered through gifts of animals, organic vegetable
farming training, micro-funds and economic activities that link production with markets.
The project will especially focus on helping the community to achieve self-reliance and break
the cycle of hunger and poverty.
The community’s social capital will be strengthened by gradually organizing 831 families
into 41 Self-Help Groups (SHG). Initially 239 families will be organized into 10 SHGs, which
will serve as model groups and form and mentor the additional 31 pass-on SHGs.
Members of the RCP will provide additional technical inputs in the areas of maternal and
child health, nutrition, adult education, veterinarian medicine, and infrastructure
development.
The project will be implemented in partnership with the village development committee, local
NGO and stakeholders. The RCP and Heifer International Nepal have already started the
preliminary phases of the project planning and fundraising. The project's estimated budget
for the three-year period is US$ 230,000. The RCP, in collaboration with other Rotary
partners, has set their target contribution at US$ 60,000. Initially we plan to raise US$
20000. Heifer will contribute US$ 124,000 and US$ 46,000 will be leveraged from the
community itself.
The Rotary investment will fund 500 goats at US$ 50 each; 25 bucks at US$ 150 each; 275
animal sheds at US$ 30 each; fodder, vegetable and fruit seeds; animal medicine and
vaccines; as well as exposure visits.

Smile-a-while
A blonde hadn't been to church for many many
months. She always promised to go, but never
did.
One day, the pastor was astounded when she suddenly rocked up for Sunday service. Thereafter,
she was at every Sunday service, every prayer
meeting, every home group meeting, etc.
Three months later, one Sunday after the service,
the pastor asks her, "What happened to you? You
always dodged church and now it looks like you
can't get enough of it?"
She replied, "Its this new car of mine pastor; they
told me the warranty will lapse if I miss even one
service!"
The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway Vol 8/ 2014-15
Our speaker today is Austrlian Rotraian Tony Freeman, from the District

developing countries with urgent medical treatment that has given them new
hope.
The Objectives of ROMAC are as follows
 To provide hope where there is no
hope
 To restore dignity to human life
 To save or transform the lives of
children from developing countries.
 To provide the best possible medical
and surgical expertise
Since ROMAC began in 1988, they
have treated over 350 deserving and
underprivileged children.

Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary
still has far more men as members than it does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we
bring more women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospective female members – and
become more productive as well.
