I have absolutely nothing I want to talk about!
Classic Plastic Model Club Newsletter I have absolutely nothing I want to talk about! by Del Paone That’s right – I have absolutely nothing I want to talk about, as a matter of fact there are a lot of things I don’t want to talk about…but, I guess I will. I have to bring up the subject of the lack of young people in our hobby. Doug Estabrook, an esteemed member of MassCar and friend (that’s right – I said friend), pointed this out in our last newsletter. It’s sad but it’s a fact – there are mostly ‘old folks’ involved in our hobby…a lot of gray hair, glasses, wrinkles, pot bellies and canes. Why are younger people not being drawn to our hobby? Perhaps we’ve set the craftsmanship level too high. If you’ve followed the model publications for the past few years it’s easy to see that the level of building has risen greatly. Imagine being a novice builder and picking up a copy of Scale Auto or Model Cars…and if that’s not bad enough – imagine picking up an issue of Contest Cars; it would be a very rude awakening! Maybe I’m way off with my thinking. Perhaps it’s all due to I-Phones, ‘texting’, the Internet, E-mail, Facebook, Ebay, Craigslist and ‘tweeting’. How can an old-time hobby like model building hold a candle to all of that crap? Mr. Prestigious and I have attended a lot of shows in the last year, and the absence of young people involved with modeling is startling. Are they being held hostage by the new technologies? That sure seems to be the answer. So I suggest you get used to seeing a lot of gray and/or thinning hair on most of the people attending shows in 2013. I know that some model clubs are losing members but I’m glad to report that our club has grown in numbers over the last few years. I believe that’s attributable to our enthusiasm to the hobby, which has allowed our club to grow and prosper while other clubs fall victim to age related attrition. I can only hope this continues for us in 2013 and beyond. Thanks for listening… Del Volume 18 Number 3 Classic Plastic 20th Annual Model Car Exhibition By Art Paquin Months of planning and preparation and it’s over in a snap! That’s how our 20th anniversary show seemed to me. Many thanks to all who volunteered, to all the hobby vendors who worked the show and to the many people who took the time to attend and enter our show, for without you our show would not exist. You’ve made this one of the best events we’ve had yet and we hope to see all of you next year – October 6, 2013 – at the Lawrence Elks for the 21st Annual Classic Plastic Model Car Exhibition. So, let’s get the boring statistics over with… Model Entries – 252 Show Entrants – 64 Spectator only – 62 I’m sure most of you who volunteer your time and effort during the show may notice that due to the demands of the day you may not have enough time (or any time) to enjoy the entries presented at our show. I hope the following photos ‘fill in the gaps’ or, if you did find time to check out the entries, offer a pleasant reminder of the terrific entries presented at our show. Enjoy. Art For those members attending our monthly meetings, please try to bring a sealed kit to donate to the club collection. Every kit will help defray the cost of our contest. Club Business discussed at this meeting: • • • • Show-N-Tell Photos for July • • As of August 4th we are still "light" on the sale of vendor tables. Typically, sales do increase as the date for the show gets closer. Barry will call the food vendor for show date and time confirmation. Barbara Denza has volunteered to be in charge of attaching the spectator and vendor wrist bands. This will make things go much smoother at the registration table. We discussed getting more kits for our show and meeting raffles from an outside source. We are looking at buying collections or possibly kits from club member Chip Bailey. "Mr. Prestigious" will be in charge of checking with Chip Bailey on purchasing some kits. Dwayne Benoit, as usual, will be ordering the tables which will be delivered to the Elks hall on the Friday before the show. It was discussed, and decided on, to have a table set up to showcase models built by members over the last 20 years. This can be the first model you built after joining the club or a model you built before joining the club. It should prove a very interesting display. Club Business discussed at this meeting: • • • • The date for next years show will be October 6, 2013. We felt that October is a better date for the show due to many people still being busy in September. It was decided (voted on) that the theme for the show next year will be anything "badged" as Shelby. This will include Cobras, Mustangs and Dodges. We all felt that due to the recent passing of Carroll Shelby that this would be a fitting tribute to the man who contributed so much to the "performance" automotive world. As of the meeting today we had 28 vendor tables sold. As we usually sell about 33, we are pretty close to our goal. Maybe there will be a couple more sales in the two weeks before the show. The club purchased 62 model kits from Chip Bailey. He gave us a really good price on the sealed kits with a good selection and very few duplicates. He also said that if we wanted to "do it again" to let him know. So from "all of us" a very big, THANKS CHIP!!! Club Business discussed at this meeting: • • • • • • This meeting was supposed to be held at Del’s house in conjunction with our annual club cookout, but Mother Nature intervened and we had it at the VFW (usual place) instead. Del then took everyone over to the Chinese Buffet for dinner, on him. Del, thank you that was very generous indeed. We discussed our show and all agreed it turned out quite well. There was a very lively discussion over our judging system (point system) and it was decided to make a couple of changes for next year. We had 252 entries this year which was down from last year, but entries at every one of the shows we attended this year were down so this was not a surprise. Surprisingly, the class with the most entries was the In-Progress class with 22. The next highest was the Theme class ('32 Fords) with 20. All in all we thought it was a good show and we had plenty of help "setting up" and "tearing down", as usual. This is especially appreciated as we usually can't get into the hall to set up on Saturday night until after Mid-night. Thanks to all who "lent a hand" on either or both days!!! Our feature for our 20th show consisting of having 20 members each pick a model as their favorite and giving an award to that person seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees. In that light, for next year, anyone of our members who would like to sponsor a trophy for that reason may do so again. The cost to you for the trophy is $15.00. It was brought up and voted on as to whether or not we should try to change our show format in the future to an NNL style format. Pros and cons were discussed and it was decided to leave the show as it is. The food truck was well received and he seemed to be pleased and said he would be happy to return again next year. I will be in touch with him to confirm this shortly. A suggestion was made by Joe Baril requesting every member bring in their oldest built model to the February 2013 club meeting so we can observe and discuss. We all agreed it was a good idea as long as we remember to do it. Reminders will be posted in future newsletters. I wanted to write about some of the recent projects I’ve kept myself quite occupied with (in between the aftershocks, of course) this year. Reference the two photos to the right.
