Every Day

It was a very unique day to come across Inuksuks,
so perfectly placed along the creek. So much time
and dedication put into these mysterious stone
structures. The Inuksuk have ancient roots in
Inuit culture, and have been commonly used for
navigation, camps or hunting grounds. On the
wild arctic landscape they are often the only sign
that humans have passed through, a symbol of the
traditional Inuit way of life. In addition to their
earthly functions, some Inuksuk-like figures have
spiritual implications, and are objects of admiration,
often marking the spiritual landscape of the
Inummariit — the Inuit who know how to survive on
the land living in their traditional way. The Inuksuk
was the symbol for Vancouver 2010 Olympics,
and has been said to mirror the Canadian spirit of
friendship and community.
I would assume whoever placed these Inuksuks
along the creek were not marking for hunting
or navigation, but we must thank them. They are
beautiful and very symbolic. For those who are not
aware, it just may prompt them to do some research
on our Canadian History.

Oh, Country Life
I wake up each morning, to the most beautiful view.
A breath of fresh air, and a sky crispy blue.
A wonderland of life, on pastures so green.
Relaxed and at peace, my mind feels so clean.
Life out here, does not seem like a chore.
There’s plenty of work, but more to explore.
People are friendly, smiles we share.
For mother earth, we all mutually care.
Homemade apple pie, during my walks, I can smell.
My joys and gratitude, to the birds I just yell.
Oh, Country life, That I love and embrace.
This is my home, this is my place.

Moving & Tax Implications
Moving is a pain, but
there is one possible
upside when it’s
time to file your tax
return for the year:
moving
expenses
can be claimed as
an income deduction
if
you
moved
during the year and
established a new
home to start a new job or business. This
deduction is also available to post-secondary
students, but only if they are studying fulltime and only if they received an amount
from a scholarship, bursary, fellowship
or research grant in the year which was
required to be included in income.
For all taxpayers, the main test is whether
they moved at least 40 kilometers closer to
the new place of employment or business.
This would be roughly equivalent to moving
from Havelock to Peterborough.
The moving expenses can only be deducted
from the employment, self-employment,
scholarship etc. income earned at the new
location after the moving date, not from any
other type of income.
If you move near the end of the calendar
year and do not have any income earned
in the new location to deduct the moving
expenses against they can be carried
forward to the following tax return.
You must be diligent about keeping receipts
in case CRA asks to see them. You can
deduct transportation and storage costs
for household effects, travel expenses,
meals and accommodation for up to 15 days
maximum when displaced between homes,
and all the costs to sell your old residence
(or to break the lease). There are simplified
methods available for meals ($17/meal to
a maximum of $51/day per person) and
vehicle expenses ($0.575/km in Ontario for
2014).
Making a Difference in
Downtown Peterborough
What I see from my desk in the heart of the
city can be sad, heartbreaking, laughable and
extremely interesting all within a matter of
minutes…a bird’s eye view of life in the inner
core.
Four years ago FRIENDS Peterborough opened
at 283 George St. North to offer help, hope and
a hand-up to anyone who drops in. Almost daily
we get new “friends” stopping by to ask what
we do…unaware that we even existed. Yes,
we are a relatively undiscovered refuge in the
heart of the city.
FRIENDS Peterborough was launched by
Selwyn Outreach Centre to reach out to our
community. Since 1998 FRIENDS had been
carrying on humanitarian efforts in countries
such as the Sudan, Brazil and Kenya but
the leadership at Selwyn wanted to make a
difference right here in our city as well.
I was asked to take a lead role and continue
to be the frontline staff worker with Stephen
Donaldson and Connie Garvey assisting as
very competent volunteers. Every day is a new
adventure with new friends and challenges
awaiting us.

COVER STORY
The CHEX Television Team
All services offered by FRIENDS Peterborough
are free to the public and include helping seniors
with CPP and Old Age Security applications,
helping individuals with Passport applications,
advocating for clients with landlord/tenant
issues, helping to find housing and advising of
available services in our community.
If we can’t offer the help needed we will refer
clients to a local agency that can best assist them.
What we don’t do at FRIENDS is hand out
food, clothing or money. We don’t provide
professional counseling but we do offer
compassionate hearts and listening ears. Appointments are not necessary and everyone
is welcome to drop in.
And, if you want a refreshing bottle of cold
water…we give out hundreds of them every year.

CHEX TV Bigger & Better Than Ever!
CHEX Television has been hitting above its
weight for 6 decades… and on August 31st, it
delivered a knock-out punch.
television programs in Canada. In fact, 20
of the top 30 shows in Canada will now be
on CHEX.” McCutcheon proudly explains.
“CHEX viewers have gained five and a half
hours of Local News, weather and sports
each week,” Westman claims.
After 60 years of CBC affiliation the TV station
began a new chapter in its history. At 12:05 AM,
August 31st, CHEX began CTV programming.
For most residents of the region, CHEX
Television has been a life-long staple. While
many of us might fondly recall watching
“Dallas” or “Campus Quiz,” the Local News
has been something that has arguably had
the greatest impact on the people who
watch.
“On Monday August 31st, at Noon – we
launched a brand new, full-hour News
program called ‘Newswatch at Noon’
that runs Monday to Friday. We also reintroduced a half hour of local News on
Saturdays at 6:00 PM.”
“This has been a historic change for CHEX
television and for Peterborough,” says Dave
McCutcheon, the Regional General Manager
of CHEX TV and its Sister Stations in Durham
and Kingston.
“We now carry almost all of the most popular
CHEX Television’s Manager of News and
Television Operations Jay Westman says
CHEX is now set to increase that impact.
“This means more local News and
information, but also more time with our
familiar local News personalities like Keri
Ferguson, Jaye Makinson, Mike Judson,
Meaghan Roy or Teresa Kaszuba.”
McCutcheon says that the new agreement
with CTV is different from an affiliation,
which is why CHEX is able to put more
News on the air now.
“This is what’s called a ‘program supply
agreement’ and what it means is that CTV
simply supplies its programs to us… we
are now able to offer our viewers and our
advertisers the best possible on-air lineup
by expanding our highly rated local news
programming and surrounding it with the
top shows across the country.”

CGA. Gwyneth is a partner at Cody & James
CPAs which has been providing accounting
services for over 25 years to individuals and
small businesses throughout Peterborough
City and County. (705) 876-6011.
One example of the change viewers will
have noticed, is the “lead-in” to the popular
CHEX Daily program, says Westman.
“In recent years, the CBC has been showing
re-runs of 'Dragon’s Den' between 4:00 PM
and 5:00 PM, just before the ‘Daily',” he
says.
“Now, Ellen, arguably the number one
daytime talk show in North America is the
lead-in. That’s fantastic!”
One question Westman and McCutcheon
have been asked a number of times, they
say, is whether the new arrangement means
that CHEX will, at some stage, become
CTV Peterborough.
“Absolutely
not,”
“CTV is simply who
our programming
still independently

we will be getting
from – we are
owned by Corus
will continue to
grow under our heritage brand, CHEX
Television.”
However, there are some changes to the
local brand that you may have noticed, says
Westman.
“We’ve re-vamped our on-air look for the
local News,” he says.
“We have already changed and updated our
set, which you see behind Keri Ferguson
every night. We’ve introduced new
graphics, music and effects that better
reflect the dynamic and modern News
organization that we’ve become.”
“You’ll also have noticed new intros and
graphics on the CHEX Daily, Newswatch@6,
and Newswatch Late Edition.”
Speaking of Newswatch Late Edition –
Westman admits it has moved to a slightly
later time slot than ever before, beginning
at 11:30 PM rather than 11:00 PM.
“Sure, it is 30 minutes later, but it now
follows the number one National News
program in Canada and Peterborough: The
CTV National News with Lisa LaFlamme.”
One thing that is underlying all this talk
of ratings and top shows, is that CHEX
TV’s Newswatch@6 has been completely
owning its time slot in the region for years,
and recently surprised everyone with its
biggest numbers ever.
“When I look at ratings for TV shows across
the country, I can’t believe the numbers
Newswatch@6 is pulling.”
According to the latest numbers from the
Spring 2015 survey done by Numeris –
Newswatch@6 on CHEX has 64,000 viewers
in the Peterborough area alone – that’s one
in 5 of every man, woman and child sitting
down at 6PM to hear what happened in
their community.
If that’s not a knock-out punch, it’s hard to
say what is.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Real Estates
In last month’s column, I related the story on how my wife and I acquired our first home. I am
gratified by the e-mails received from readers who shared their emotional stories running the
gauntlet from trials and tribulations, heartache and tears to untold happiness and total peace.
Some new buyers inherited
leaky basements, poor wiring
and mysterious odours while
others found their new homes
to be exactly what they had
dreamed,
although,
most
wished they had not signed
on to such hefty mortgage
payments.
The two largest purchases any
of us will ever make is first
a house and then a car. Our
first home cost $8500.00 in
the middle 1950s and my first
car was a 1929 Model A Ford I
bought in 1949 for $150.00 when I was fifteen. How times have changed since I was a lad.
Artisan
Land & Waterscaping
On the heels of last month's Balsam Lake Boathouse story
on shoreline appeal, we are excited to introduce you to Paul
Weisberg of Artisan Land and Waterscaping. Most will agree
that one of the most desirable aspects of any property is the
presence of water or a water feature. Whether it's a natural
lake, waterfall, or pond, it's undeniable that water has a magical
effect on our surroundings. And listening to the sound of a
waterfall can make an already existing lake view even more
enjoyable.
Paul has over 20 years' experience in designing and building
ponds and water features and is skilled at creating beautiful
waterscapes. His knowledge of the structure of the land is
essential to the success of this type of project, especially
when excavation and ground movement is involved. This
understanding, combined with his artist's eye, allows him to
transform the ugliest rocky or overgrown landscape into a
beautiful, natural-looking piece of scenery.
Many people don't realize that building a pond can be a
complicated process, and having an expert do the job ensures
a longer lifetime for the pond, and healthier, prolonged
life for your fish too. Correct set-up of a pond will help keep
maintenance costs down and avert any unexpected problems
down the road, especially when the weather turns colder.
Having a professional who understands the needs and habits of
the fish is paramount to providing a safe, healthy environment
for the fish you choose.
Paul has been working with water and fish since the midseventies. He began as a technician with the Fisheries and
Oceans Department, where he learned valuable information
about controlling water, and how water behaves under
particular circumstances. His interest in and knowledge of
fish came from working in the Salmonid Division. He has taken
many additional courses through the fisheries department and
has worked in private industry for many years on the West
Coast, East Coast and even in Jamaica.
Paul also studied at Trent University and completed the
Aquaculture program at Sir Sandford Fleming College. In
his younger days, he spent a lot of time in the woods and has
worked as a guide in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and
British Columbia. His inspiration comes from exploring the
wilder areas of our great country, and he loves to see water flow
– whether it's down a mountainside or just off the granite cuts
in the spring run-off.
This knowledge combined with his creative streak, result in
the production of some stunning transformations of home
and cottage properties. Paul loves the challenge that land and
rock limitations can present and he is passionate about finding
a creative solution for any landscaping project. He finds
satisfaction in taking an existing pond that has never worked
properly, correcting it, and then rebuilding the water feature,
designing it to efficiently house fish and plants so that it not only
operates correctly but also gives the viewer that “wow” factor.
Even when faced with a huge chunk of Burleigh bedrock right
beside the proposed location for a water feature adjacent
to a new cottage being built on Stoney Lake, Paul chose to
transform the rock. Although it turned out to be more difficult
than anticipated, he managed to stay in budget and the owner
now has a beautiful water feature that sits about 12' – 15' from
his dining area. Paul even goes so far as to place rotten mosscovered rocks and logs in the creekways, giving the impression
that they have been there for a thousand years.
In the early 1940s, Canada experimented with a few prefab homes in anticipation of the need
when our service personnel would eventually return home from active duties. By 1944, it was
evident boys and girls who went off to war four and five years past were coming home as
men and women and needed places to live. Thousands of war brides would also be arriving
expecting their veteran spouse to provide a home. Within a year and a half every available lot,
field or parcel of land was levelled and thousands of wartime houses seemed to grow over night.
The war finally ended in 1945 and our heroes began coming home. Originally all the wartime
homes were rental only through a government agency Wartime Housing Ltd., later known as
Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. A one-floor plan five rooms and bath home rented
for $22.00 a month. The larger one and a half story rented for $30.00, all homes were supplied
with a coal stove, blinds and although having to pay hydro and water, were tax exempt. By
1950 the government wanted out of the rental business and began selling all of the houses with
prices ranging from $2500.00 - $4500.00, veterans could receive financial assistance through
the Veterans Land Act. It is estimated over one million wartime houses are still comfortable,
well maintained homes across Canada today, in fact, one of the e-mails received was from an
original wartime house resident.

Winterizing Your Dock
Fall is a beautiful time of year but for cottagers it
can often mean a lot of work when it comes to closing
up the cottage for the winter season. Part of the fall
close up usually means removing the dock and boat
lift and sending the boat off for winterization. We
have put together quick guide to help you through
this task.
Pipe Docks – If you do not have a lift up dock try
using floatation billets to help remove your pipe dock.
You can purchase a couple foam billets in 8’ lengths
from a local building store and then cut them in half.
We tend to use ones that are approximately 7” high
by 22’ wide in order to get enough buoyancy. Place a
piece of the float under each corner of the dock and
then raise the legs up and float the dock into shore.
This way it is easier to maneuver in deep water. If
you do have removable decking panels we suggest
piling them up on shore and placing a tarp over them
so that you do not get uneven fading of the decking
panels, due to the sun over the winter months. Make
sure that you secure your docks and decking panels
far enough back on shore so that if we have another
spring with extremely high water levels your dock
and decking panels will not float away.
Boat Lifts – Most Boat Lift manufacturers offer
wheel kits to aid in removing the Boat Lift from the
water however if you have a retaining wall on your
shoreline or if you have a very soft waterfront they
can sometimes be very little help. Similar to the
lift up docks that crank into the air for the winter
months you can also have a lift up attachment made
up that will attach the lift to the shoreline and lift it
into the air. The important factor with this is to get
a boat lift that is strong enough to accommodate one
of these attachments. You can also use the floats that
we mentioned above and put them under your boat
lift frame to move it into shore as well.
After you have removed your lift from the water
it is a good time to check the cable for signs of
wear and to grease your pulleys with a water
resistant synthetic grease. If your cable needs to
be replaced or you require a new pulley, this is the
great time to do it.

Family Sub-Compact Utility Tractors
You’ve been there…down on your hands and knees, sweat in your eyes,
muscles straining as you try to pull a heavy mower deck out from under
your tractor. Finally, after a struggle that seemed to last for days, you’ve
done it. You’ve managed to get the deck off. Now, it’s time to hop back on
and go back to work…
Sounds exhausting! Now what if there was a better way of getting the job
done? A solution, designed from the ground up, created to help you tackle
just about anything on your property?
Cue the John Deere 1 Family Sub-Compact Utility Tractor with AutoConnect™ drive-over mower deck, iMatch™ QuickHitch compatibility and Twin Touch™ hydrostatic controls. No matter for digging, mowing, loading or landscaping, these
tractors will solve your problems without you ever leaving your seat.

Sometimes life will throw you a curve and spin your world out
of control…or so it may feel at the time.
I recently had a scare with my mother’s health and it really
brought home to me how truly precious every moment we
have with our loved ones really is. Not long after my scare with Mom I became a grandmother
of a beautiful new baby boy. It may sound cliché or simple,
but remember to slow down and cherish “your moments.”
In my business, people come into our showroom to look for
fireplaces and stoves and I talk with them, and, as I listen,
I imagine them surrounded by family and friends, making
memories of their own.
For a little more power, check out the 1025R. With standard four-wheel drive and power steering, Twin Touch™ pedal
control and hydrostatic transmission for precision speed control with smooth directional change, the 1025R offers excellent
maneuverability in all types of condition.
Now if you really need to dig in to get the job done, Green Tractor’s new Cottager package is for you. It features a hardworking 1025R, with factory-installed H120 loader, 260A backhoe, and a STIHL® Trimmer! You’ll take down mountains of
work with higher lift capacity, integrated Quik-Park mounting system and a backhoe offering a curbed boom design for
greater utility and strength.
There’s something really special about helping someone find
the perfect fireplace or wood stove. Fire is so much more
than just a heat source. It is a safe haven, a place to unwind
and come together. Fire is part of our primal nature and we
gravitate towards it not just as a source of heat and cooking,
but also socially as a place to relax and tell stories. In this “connected” busy life we live, real “face to face”
time is so important. Life can pass us by while we scurry
to get everything done, yet we are missing opportunities
to make memories with our dearest loved ones and talk,
sing, eat and love.
Sitting by the fire is the place where all your worries go on hold
and you have these wonderful impromptu discussions, these
easy, natural conversations. When you can just sit and stare at
the flames, no words required, just sharing the moment.
Memories are made not only by the big events or trips but by
the time we spend talking, laughing and sharing, the day to
day parts of our lives.

Kitchen Colours & Trends
As we return from Summer Holidays and
start into the fall season, we are seeing
new kitchen colour schemes and door
styles that reflect what’s happening in
Europe and around the world.
In many countries, where space is limited,
kitchens are physically smaller and need
to be bright and functional. They also
need to stand up to the wear and tear
that kitchens, in general, get over time.
The newest materials include polyester
finishes that look like painted surfaces but
offer much more durability. Stains wash
off easily and they are very difficult to
damage.
As for the colours, off whites such as
cloud white, antique white or cloud cover,
as well as several lighter shades of grey,
are now the colours of choice. These look
great in both smaller, darker kitchens as
well as in larger, open concept areas where
14
the kitchen is seen from other rooms.
Countertops continue to revolve around
a variety of stone materials. The top of
the list is still quartz. This is inherently
very hard and non-porous - meaning no
staining and no sealers required. They’re
easy to live with as there is virtually no
maintenance other than wiping them off.
Undermount sinks complement the look
of stone countertops and make clean up
a breeze as nothing catches under the
lip of the sink. Stainless steel or granite
composite styles are very popular.
Take the time to stop into the showroom
and see these amazing new products and
you’ll be inspired.

For our staff, being here is like a “working vacation” - spending time with relaxed
cottagers who are enjoying themselves means we look forward to every day! The
atmosphere is unbeatable. We come to work, look out of the window, and see the
picturesque image that is Muskoka - that's what we call our office and it doesn't get
any better than that! It feels great to look forward to coming to work because we
know that the cottagers love it here too.
Since 1994
We've enjoyed watching the
resort change, meeting the
new owners, hearing them
share their stories - these are
the highlights of our year. The
people we meet here are so
interesting, we've seen babies
being born, couples renew
their vows, family reunions,
birthdays and retirements!
We love the kids who come
into the Welcome Centre just
to say hello - they spend time
colouring, playing games,
and they fill the room with
laughter and joy!
We enjoyed seeing parents
relaxing on colourful Adirondack
chairs, watching as children
transformed the beach with
elaborate sandcastles. The kids
hunted for treasure during Pirate
Week, posed for Wanted Posters
for Western Week and walked
on water in Rollerz and Walkerz
inflatables. They kept cool with
Slushies and enjoyed penny

shopped at our on-site Bazaar, and
enjoyed our annual fishing derby.

marshmallows and songs around
the campfire we watched families
relax, wind down, and build

Outboards, Chainsaws
and Televisions...Oh, My!
It is that time of year again. The temperature
starts to drop, leaves change colour and
people close their summer getaway for the
winter. Some do it on Labour Day, some
at Thanksgiving. But whenever it is that
you ‘close the camp’, it means a return
to work (boo!), return to school (yippee!)
and a change of season. This is the most
vulnerable time for your property. The most
unscrupulous of people use this time of year
to cruise the vacant cottage roads and take
full advantage of the solitude.
Thieves take things because they are rarely
traceable and easy to sell. Who wouldn’t
buy a newish high-end chainsaw for fifty
bucks? They count on your good nature.
Traditionally 9.9hp outboards are regularly
stolen. Why? Easy…you don’t have to
register anything under 10hp. If it’s not
registered, then you likely have not written
down the serial numbers. Without serial
numbers, your new 9.9hp Yamaha outboard
is completely untraceable. Same goes for all
of the most commonly stolen cottage items:
flat screen televisions (pretty sure your
200lb Sony Trinitron from 1992 is safe) and
other electronic items, generators, tools,
chainsaws, fishing equipment, small outboard
motors, ATVs, motorcycles (especially
unregistered dirt bikes), snowmobiles and
(believe it or not) firearms!
I get it….you don’t want to haul all of your
‘stuff’ back to the city. It is, quite simply,
a pain! There is an easier way. Use your
smartphone to snap a quick picture of the
serial number of those commonly stolen
items. If you ever have a theft it will be easy
for police to identify your stuff. It will also
be very easy to deal with your insurance
company. At the very least, you might have
peace of mind knowing that you might
actually have a chance of recovering your
stolen items.

Got a Tooth Ache?
September's arrival may have brought a
sense of relief for some parents– the kids
are in school again and we've settled back
into our familiar routines. For many, it's
a nice feeling.
TEABAG - Take a tea bag and wet it with some warm (not hot) water. Apply the
teabag on the tooth. Tea has tannins that help reduce the swelling and also give
pain relief.
For others, though, this may be a time of
great anxiety. Your child may have just
started school for the first time ever,
or they may have switched schools, or
maybe they moved up a grade and all
their friends are in a different class.
Maybe they don't like their new teacher
or school in general.
For families who are no strangers to
anxiety, this can be a very challenging
time. As a parent of two young children,
I have experienced these scenarios and
have had to find creative solutions for
school-related anxiety.
Here are some ideas which worked for
our family. When they are little, simply
placing a kiss in one hand and a hug in
the other and telling them to put it in
their pocket for later can make them feel
safe. Or place a note in their lunch box
or pencil case with a cheerful message, a
wallet containing pictures of the family,
or a favourite toy, or a surprise, in their
backpack. All are great reminders that
they are loved.
Older children might take a special stone
or charm with them. Something they
can use as an anchor during troubling
situations. Just holding onto a solid object
when they're anxious can help ground
them enough to re-focus and remind
them to replace negative thoughts with
positive ones.
We might worry that our kids could
become dependent upon this sort of
thing, like the hard-to-give-up soother
or that well-worn “blankie”. I believe
though, that when used as a transitional
tool - as long as the child is taught to
access their own inner strength through
the object and not to rely on it as a crutch
- then there is no harm done.
When a toothache is bothering you it’s hard to concentrate on anything else.
Here are a few home remedies you can try to get some relief:
SALTWATER - Dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a warm glass of water and rinse
your mouth with it. The salt will help the swelling and also kill bacteria in your
mouth.
GARLIC - Garlic has so a lot of great medicinal properties. Crush a clove of garlic
and mix in some rock salt. Apply this paste on the affected tooth.
Whiskey or Brandy - This home remedy has been around for many years. All you
do is take a ball of cotton and soak it with some whiskey or brandy and place it
on your tooth. It won’t last long but you will get some relief while you schedule a
visit to the dentist!

Calls For Volunteers
Everyone needs to feel that they have
been listened to. Telecare receives calls
from people who are worried, lonely or
overwhelmed and really want a sounding
board. Telecare volunteers understand
that need.
Why volunteer with Telecare
Peterborough?
When asked, volunteers have talked
about what they have learned, what they
have felt and how their volunteering has
changed them.
Volunteers are required to take 50 hours
of training which includes presentations,
role-playing
and
discussions
with
speakers from various local agencies
which prepare volunteers to handle
calls related to issues including mental
illness, poverty, grief, depression, abuse,
addictions and suicide. Volunteers say
that this training gives them a real
insight into social and local issues and
what it means to be empathetic and nonjudgemental.
I've also learned that we as parents,
should always stay positive about school,
otherwise kids will pick up on any
underlying anxiety we have. As we relax,
so too do our children.

What is it like to volunteer?
One long-time volunteer wrote:
“The time I am present in the office for a
four hour shift is a small price to pay for
the reward of hearing the appreciation
expressed by a caller who just needed
someone to know that they were hurting
and feeling helpless to change what
seemed a desperate situation. It was, and
continues to be, my hope that when given
time to explore options and glimpse a
small ray of light, a caller may experience
the beginning of change.”
The same volunteer wrote: “I am grateful
that I have been given the opportunity
to be part of the Telecare family where
I have shared in this community of many
gifts: gifts of wisdom, generosity, caring,
commitment and certainly humour.”
The privilege of sharing a caller’s closest
thoughts is both humbling and enriching.
Volunteers become more empathetic,
more understanding and better able to

nightmare. It could be discovering the travel insurance purchased doesn’t cover their
treatment or care, the treating hospital has now used all of their available insurance
dollars, or that they are leaving the “family” to pay for a repatriation flight. Even while
on a quick trip out of the province or country, an unexpected medical emergency can
leave you unprepared to navigate the complex healthcare and medical transportation
systems around the globe.
The processes to mitigate health care facilities and physicians vary between institutions,
province and country, leaving the unprepared traveller and the family with an even
greater dilemma during a stressful time. Rapid changes in technology and the impact
of communicating across time zones, privacy issues, hours of operation, and specific
requirements to access hospitals and physicians, all result in extreme difficulty sorting
through the “red tape” families and patients have to navigate. Appropriate and effective
decisions require critical assessment based on correct information. It can mean the
difference between life or death.

Pumpkins are the largest berry in the world. We most
commonly consume pumpkins in pies over the coming
holiday seasons, most of which will be made from canned
pumpkin for convenience sake as it is ready to use and
available year round.
September and October are the best time to cook using
fresh pumpkins as they are inexpensive and available in
great quantity. To cook with fresh harvested pumpkins,
I suggest choosing smaller pumpkins as they are easier
to handle and have a higher concentration of naturally
occurring sugars. A small five-pound pumpkin will yield
about four pounds of puree which is about enough to bake
5 9-inch pumpkin pies. To prepare your pumpkin for puree
one needs to simply give it a good washing off, then remove
the top so you can remove the seeds which you should
reserve and toast up separately. Next cut the pumpkin into
6 evenly sized wedges and cook them either in a steamer
or bake them until the flesh becomes soft. Once cooked let
the pumpkin cool down and pull off the skin and discard it.
Use the cooked, softened pumpkin in any recipe that calls
for canned pumpkin puree.
September 15 - October 12, 2015 ~ Cottage Country Connection
Ingredients:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
½ tsp. ground nutmeg
½ tsp. ground cloves
½ tsp. salt
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Pumpkin Shake
Ingredients:
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 banana
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1 tbsp. honey
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. brown sugar
3 cups bovine, rice or almond milk
2 cups ice cubes
Method: Sift the dry ingredients; flour, baking powder,
baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt
into a large mixing bowl and set aside. Separately, cream
together the butter and white sugar in a second large
mixing bowl. Once the butter and sugar are creamed beat
in the pumpkin, egg, and vanilla until creamy. Fold the dry
ingredients into the wet mixture and mix until just evenly
combined. Using two teaspoons, spoon out the cookie dough
and drop them onto a parchment lined baking sheet and
gently flatten them down to uniform thickness.
Method: Combine all ingredients in a blender except
for brown sugar and cover with lid. Blend the mixture
on “high” setting until it is smoothly puréed. Divide the
pumpkin smoothie evenly into four shallow-wide mouthed
glasses to allow for easy cookie dipping and sprinkle with
the brown sugar and serve immediately.

Bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes in an oven preheated
to 350°f. Once cooked, transfer the cookies to a baking rack
to cool.
Pumpkins alone are quite healthy for us as they are high
in Vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants. This member of
the gourd family has an exceptionally high water content
making it ideal to use in juicers and blenders for making
smoothies and cocktails. All of these great attributes of
the pumpkin make it perfect for the following two recipes
which balances sweets and dessert together in a cookies
and cream preparation that are great to make with the
family.

Dr. Terry’s Zoo
There’s a lot to be said for your best friend’s name. On our
summer walk today with Amigo Habernero, Chili Pepper and
Spinnaker we bumped into John (who is 85 years young) and
his constant companion, Sunshine, a petite Lhasa Apso. I have
acquired her favour by sharing an abundance of liver treats. It
always pleases me to see how easily I can make a new canine
friend! John always says one can never have too much sunshine
in one’s life.
A young kitten visited our hospital last week with a case of
Cuterebra infestation. As the Pet Health Network states, “If you
have ever seen the Alien movie you can relate to a Cuterebra
invasion." Cuterebra are large flies that use cats, dogs, rabbits
and squirrels in which to grow more Cuterebras. The mature
fly lays eggs at the entrance to the rodent’s nest. Upon hatching
the larva travel through the nose or mouth and migrate usually
under the skin but can also migrate into the hosts' brains
causing an array of neurological signs. Eventually, they create
a breathing hole in the hosts' skin and you can observe the
Cuterebra poking its alien head out of the cyst. Toto Bird the
toad hunter (our Cairn Terrier) could not be dissuaded from her
continual digging and hunting for mice and moles. One August
two small craters appeared on her derriere and on examination
two warbles or Cuterebra were found. We removed the aliens,
debrided the fistula and flushed the open areas. A prescription
of antibiotics completed the routine. If your pet is of the hunting
persuasion you are best to check for any abnormal bumps and
especially the neck area in cats.
Does Your Dog
Come When
You Call?
With all of the coywolves prowling our neighbourhood the only
hunting our six felines get is a wistful look at our multiple
bird feeders awash with chickadees, cardinals and of course
squirrels. May Sunshine greet your every walk - just remember
to carry extra liver treats!

dog owners have to deal with is a dog that will not
come when it is called.

For most dogs the problem arises in the first few
months of life when owners fail to create name
recognition in their puppy. An easy exercise to do
that takes only 5 minutes a few times a week, it
is something that can save a puppy's life later on.
Doing a few fun exercises with puppies that are
8 to 16 weeks will create a more reliable dog as
the puppy grows up. Like people dogs that learn
young, learn best.
Add to the name recognition exercise, some
restrained recalls and long line work and before
you know it the puppy loves to come back every

that puppies drag a
long line under supervision
until they are reliable under all circumstances
including squirrels and other dogs.
Never ever get angry at your puppy if they don’t
come when you call them. That is what the long
line is for. Use it to bring your dog back to you.
Dogs don’t understand anger and if you lose your
cool with them you just make them more fearful
and less likely to come back to you. When your dog
does come back to you, make it worth their while.
Offer a treat, a favourite toy or play with them a
bit. This is especially important if you are going to
have to lock them in a crate while you go to work.
Don’t call your dog to come and then do something
unpleasant to them like clip nails. It only takes one
or two episodes before they figure out that coming
back is not in their best interest. Make it fun!

Measure 1 cup of Epsom salts
and pour into the mixing bowl.
Next you need hot water, not
boiling but as hot as it will come
out of the tap, perhaps let it run
until it’s as hot as it will get. Add
1 cup of the hot water to the
mixing bowl and Epsom salts and
a couple drops of food colouring
(you can do without the colour if
you prefer). Stir, stir, stir; now stir more! The mixing is what causes the salts to dissolve and
you want as much of the salt to dissolve as possible. I stirred for almost a minute and a half.
Pour mixture into the clear jar or dish you’ve chosen to form your crystals in and then set in
the fridge to cool.
It will take hours for the crystals to form, but checking on them was fun anyway. For best
results let them sit in the fridge overnight, or even longer. Once you feel they have formed as
much as possible, carefully drain the excess liquid off of them and admire! They are pretty
neat, and using a magnifying glass with them get some exceptional reactions from the kids!

Doc Walker at Musicfest & Fishin' in the Dark
Each September, the world turns
its eyes on Toronto as the Toronto
International Film Festival kicks
into gear. Some of the best films,
actors/actresses, directors and
producers are unveiled in this
annual panoply of celebrity. But
the incredible TIFF experience
doesn’t end there.
Since 1998, Muse International Fine
Films (a program of the Peterborough Museum & Archives), in partnership
with the Toronto International Film Festival Circuit Group has brought over 230
Canadian and International films to Peterborough. As one of the first Film Circuit host
communities, Peterborough has enjoyed some real winners over the years. Academy
Award winners like “Life Is Beautiful,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, and “An
Inconvenient Truth,” along with countless other nominated films are scheduled alongside
meaningful films like “Rebelle (War Witch),” “Fruitvale Station,” “Shake Hands With the
Devil,” and “The Constant Gardener.”
As summer comes to an end, so does the incredible 29th season
of Peterborough’s Musicfest. It was a night to remember with
Canadian Country band, Doc Walker attracting an astonishing
crowd of 15,000 fans.
All films are presented in the comfort of Peterborough’s Galaxy Cinemas and hosted by
friendly museum staff. While most patrons purchase their tickets as a series (Winter/
Spring or Fall), individual tickets are always available at the door ($15 each, cash only).
Series passes can only be purchased through the Peterborough Memorial Centre Box
Office. All films are shown on Mondays (4 p.m. or 7 p.m. start)
I was curious to know how they kept so energized, after long
flights, long days, and countless sleepless nights. Their response
was admirable. “The fans, the energy – it encourages me. You
know that feeling when you connect to a crowd? That’s exciting.
They have performed thousands of shows, travelled around the
world, and still remain humble. The small town prairie guys from
Doc Walker were “honoured & privileged to be a part of such a
unique, and exciting event such as Peterborough Musicfest.”
Doc Walker is one of Canada’s most renowned country music
artists for the past two decades, having received multiple
Canadian Country Music Awards, including: “The Fans Choice,
Group or Duo of the Year, CMT Video of the Year, and Single of
the Year”.
With some great films scheduled, this fall promises to be one of the best ever for Muse:

When asked what they loved about Peterborough, Chris

in small towns in Manitoba. The lake has always played a big part
in their lives. He said some of his fondest memories of fishing and
cottaging were in northern Manitoba.

Chris reminded me, “A musician coming to a place like this,
where they have the fans, the facility, all the excitement, it’s
incredible. The community rallies together, there needs to be
more of this across Canada. We have some really cool things
happening in Winnipeg, whether it be folk fest or other great
shows, but this is almost one of a kind – something that is run for

When I was quick to ask if and when they will return, Chris replied
enthusiastically, with a sincere smile “As soon as possible”.
