As most already know, Crescent
Shrine Club has been closed for a spell
in order to do some renovations to the
Club. President John Black, along with
a number of Nobles has taken it upon
themselves to get the Club back
opened. President John said at the
January meeting if everything goes as
planned, we will be back at our home
Club, "Crescent", for the February
meeting.
He also gave a report on all of the
hard work in cleaning that Noble
Richard Sistare and several of the men
who worked with Noble Richard have
done to get the Club back open. Let’s
come out and support our Club and
see all of the new changes and how
clean and bright the Club looks now. I
think we all will be very proud of how
the Club will appear to us.
Nobles always remember there is a
reason for the season... Let 2013 be our
season to strongly support our Club.
As we begin a New Year, let us all join
together and call upon the Lord to
guide our direction toward our goals
that we might serve better because of
our special needs children.

To all of the Nobles that were in attendance for the Annual
Elections, I would like to say thank you for electing me as your
Potentate for 2013. And to the Nobles who were unable to
attend, I hope that you can support me as well.
Lady Barbara and I are happy that so many wonderful and dedicated people are planning to help us this year. We have a lot to
accomplish and look forward to meeting the challenges that
await us. Hopefully 2013 is filled with success stories we will be
able to tell for years to come. But to accomplish this we must all
work together to reach our maximum potential.
The next several weeks we have been invited to attend Omar’s

report on the number of patients for
the month of October and Hejaz had
110. The next closest other Temple

959 so far this year and the next closest

work Nobles.
The give-away we had on
December 31st came off just great. We
started out trying to sell 125 tickets,
but the demand was so great that we
had to increase that to 140 tickets. We
also increased the number of winners
from 19 to 21. A big thank you goes
out to Nobles John O’Neal, PP and the
Jamil Sportsters for their support. To
Noble Richard Lands and the
Spartanburg Shrine Club, also to
Neckbone and his wife Lynn, Squirrel,
Ronnie, Jamie, Bush and his wife

At the meeting on Wednesday,
January 2nd we had Nobles from
Chester, Winnsboro, Rock Hill, Fort

of you for coming. Hope you enjoyed
it and you are always welcome.
We meet the first Wednesday of
each month and we would love to
have you come and be with us that
night.

been given to us by God. Now, give us
the wisdom to use these gifts completely in thy will.

News from Cincinnati
When four-day old Korbin began
running a high fever, his parents took
him to the local children’s hospital
emergency room. Little they know that
shortly after Korbin’s arrival at the hospital, their newborn infant would be
diagnosed with a potentially debilitating disease: Necrotizing fasciitis.
Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection
that destroys skin and soft tissue, and
can be caused by all different kinds of
bacteria, according to Dr. Richard
Kagan, chief of staff at Shriners
Hospitals for Children® –Cincinnati.
PAGE TWENTY-ONE
Infant Korbin Home in Time
for the Holidays
It has also been called "flesh-eating
bacteria." The severe infection is rare,
especially in children and infants. "In
my 24-plus years of practice, I’ve seen
only four to five cases," Kagan said.
Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis
usually begin with a fever. Families
usually won’t recognize why their child
is running a fever. A trip to an urgent
care center or hospital emergency
room is usually where necrotizing
fasciitis is diagnosed after physician
evaluation. Hospital admission at a
children’s hospital is required to treat
the sepsis or infection. Surgical
debridement is usually required to cut
away the skin that has died as a result
of the infection.
When the infection is gone and the
patient is stable from a medical point
of view, it is time to call Shriners
Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati.
Kagan said, "When a child with
necrotizing fasciitis is stable and
infection free, Shriners is here to take
care of the wound coverage and management following surgery." A referral
to Shriners is necessary in order for
the medical staff to determine if the
child is stable enough for transfer and
the status of the wound.
Korbin spent six weeks in the hospital being treated with antibiotics and
surgery to save his life. When discharge was nearing, parents Jade and
James Kennedy began looking for help
to get Korbin’s surgical wound treated.
"A woman from church had a distant
family member who was treated at
Shriners in Cincinnati," James said.
"We looked them up on the Internet
and called, and the transfer process
started."
Great Falls Shrine Club Enjoys Family Night Event
Great Falls Shrine Club just finished their 2nd, of many more to come, Family Night
events. As you can see there was a good crowd on hand to enjoy the fellowship and
great food. We encourage all members to set aside everything on the next date to be
scheduled and come and enjoy some good home cooked food and great fellowship with
your brother Nobles and their families.
These special nights will truly depend on each one of us as to how we support these
Family Night events. Please try your best to be there and bring the family and a friend
or two!
All of our young people are very important for these Family Night events. Let’s all
work and pull together to make Great Falls Shrine Club even better and stronger in the
year 2013. We can do this together!
We knew when we walked in the
door that we were already happy we
brought our baby here," said Jade,
Korbin’s mother. "The staff treated
Korbin like a baby and not a diseased
animal. I felt like they rolled out the
red carpet for us."
Dr. Petra Warner, assistant chief of
staff, used a skin graft to cover Korbin’s
wound and he was recently discharged from the hospital without
complications.
"Shriners Hospital made our family
feel amazing. They helped our baby
live a normal baby life with cuddles,
snuggles and love."

Noble Jimmie’s business career
started in 1975 when he opened
Newberry Bug Center, an auto
mechanic shop, at the age of 20. This
business is located in Newberry, SC.
In 1976, Noble Jimmie, along with
his father and great uncle, became a
Master Mason, went through the York
Rite and became a Shriner. He immediately got involved with the Newberry
County Shrine Club working in the
bar, participating in fundraisers, and
being a part of the local Club Board of
Directors. He has served numerous

Serving as Area Rep has allowed him
to be an Executive Committee member.
Noble Jimmie is looking forward to
serving as a member of your divan.
He plans on helping Hejaz Temple
and Shriners Hospitals continue with
their missions as it is “for the kids.”
The newly elected Oriental Guide

I would like to thank ever y Noble who was at the elec tions Saturday, Januar y 5.
Each of you, no matter whom you voted for, had a voic e in the elec tion proc ess.
It is your right as a Shriner to vote. I am honored to ser ve as your Recorder for
2013. Please do not hesitate to c all me at the Temple. I am available to assist you
with club or unit questions and func tions.
We look forward to a great year with Illustrious Sir Gar y Parsons and Lady
Barbara. Great accomplishments c an be achieved with all of us pulling together
for Hejaz and the Children of our Hospitals. I ask each of you to become involved
and be ac tive. The best way to enjoy the Shrine is to help and see the Miracles
accomplished at our hospitals.
The Unit and Club Seminar will be held Saturday, Februar y 9 at Hejaz Temple. We
will star t promptly at 9:30 am. Coffee and pastries will be available before the
meeting. Any Noble is welcome to attend and bring your lady. We especially need
all Club and Unit Offic ers in attendanc e. Before the Seminar we need each Unit and
Club to provide the Temple with your 2012 financial repor t and a list of 2013 offic ers.
The Potentates’ Ball is March 9 at the Embassy Suites in Greenville. George
Jackson and his team are working hard and looking forward to filling the Banquet
Room.
The Recorders offic e is always open. I will have an ear for the problems and
issues you may have and I will take time for you. The good things are just as
impor tant as the bad.
Congratulations to Jimmie "Do-Nut" Phibbs who was elec ted Oriental Guide.
Congratulations to PP Jerr y Baxter as he continues his ser vic e as your Treasurer.
The Treasurer’s job is critic al to the financial stability of Shrine entities. The
Treasurer’s and all Divan jobs are impor tant to the decisions of running our Temple
in these especially troubled and tr ying times.
As we go about our daily lives let us pray for the safety of our soldiers in foreign
lands fighting for our freedoms. I c an personally attest that soldiers in battle
know when we are thinking of them and praying for their safety. It has been said;
no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is as formidable as the will
and moral courage of free men and women.
Let us remember our Children at our Hospitals.
Remember the angels in our lives, our signific ant others, who keep us on the
right path and suppor t us each and ever y day.
Yours in the faith,
Vern

News from the
Provost Guard
By: Dick Flowers, Captain
Another year has come and gone. It
was a very good year for the Provost
Guard. We took in 4 or 5 new members. They have been doing a great
job. They are a welcome addition to
our Unit.
Hope you all have a good and prosperous New Year, as many of you know
some new changes are coming about
in the Shrine and Masonic Order. We
will have to wait and see what they are,
and if they are good or bad for the
Shrine.
We had a good attendance for our
annual Christmas dinner at the Hilton
Hotel. The food was great; also we pre-
sented Provost Guard of the Year
awards to 3 of our older and most dedicated members.
Nobles Fred Bagwell, Jack Cartee
and Don Gardner have over 100 years
of service between them in the Provost
Guard. They were very deserving of
the awards.
As always have fun being a good
and dedicated Shriner, also do not forget we are all about the kids in the hospitals also don’t forget the older
Shriners who are in ill health, go visit
them and sit and talk to them let them
know they made the Shriners what
they are today.
Best of luck and best wishes to all of
you in the New Year!
Shriners Are More Important Than Ever…
(Continued from page 10)
With the valuable work of our
Shriners and the distribution of our
new referral cards, we will now be able
to reach even more patients and families who are searching for specialty
care.

Plant Manager and Grace Hyatt, Purchasing Agent of BF Shaw in Laurens SC, presented the Director Staff a check for $50,800.00 towards the Shrine Race. Joe and Grace
have supported the Shrine Race for many years, with all proceeds going to the Shiners’
Hospital. In 2012, the total raised was $80,035.00, this would not have been possible
without their help. A special thanks to Joe and Grace and BF Shaw! We look forward
to a continued partnership with them, moving into 2013 and beyond.

Minimum - Average - Maximum
Mark 4:20 Bring forth fruit, some thirty fold, some sixty, and some
a hundred fold.
Every one of us is given everything we need to be the most successful person
in the world! It is so sad to see some who are content to do the bare "minimum"
to get along. Then there are those who look around to see what others are doing,
and only do as much as necessary to be "average". The third group is the "all outers"! They do not measure themselves by others, but what they are capable of
doing, with the opportunities God provides. Good intentions are no substitute for
actions. Don’t be content with anything less than "one hundred fold". Our
rewards will be based on our harvest.
