OUR CHAPTER MOTTO:
“WE PUT THE FUN IN DYSFUNCTIONAL”
Tom’s Space
Hello Everyone,
Most of you will remember, last month we lost a long time member of our chapter,
Herb Springer, passed away and I would like to offer our condolences to Barb and her
family for their loss. Also Rick Riek’s father had passed away shortly before the
district meeting last month and we would like to extend our condolences to him and
his family. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone an early happy Memorial
day and to take a minute to thank all of our veterans and active military members for
their service and sacrifice’s. So far, the gatherings are progressing well. Harold and
Diane were there last month and said it went smoothly. Jean and I would really
appreciate it if someone would volunteer for assistant directors, Rider safety, and ride
coordinator. It would be a big help. As long as we get some decent weather, for the
May gathering, we will have our bike blessing after the gathering in the parking lot. I
have made arrangements with Pastor John of Harold Zion Lutheran Church. I hope we
have a beautiful day for the gathering and bike blessing. I will call everyone Saturday
night before and let everyone know if the blessing is still on. As long as we don’t have
any snow/heavy rains and around 50 deg. or more I don’t see a problem. Last month
Bill Ruth walked in with some hats and chapter patches for sale. The hats were $15.00
each and the patches $5.00ea. If you are interested in purchasing these give him a call
or catch up with him at one of our events. Saturday may 28th. Chapter T is sponsoring
Wings for Warriors ride. (Rain or shine) I have attached the flyer to this newsletter and
I have a sign-up sheet if you are interested. This ride will raise money for our disabled
Veterans. We can gather at Denny’s in Belle Vernon or at the Pizza Hut in New
Stanton, then continue to Somerset.
Jean and I attended the district meeting last month, I have to say it was an interesting
experience. We met a lot of nice people and had some good conversations. We had a
nice ice cream run to Brewster’s last month and Tom Durdevich was nice enough to
lead a ride to Ohiopyle and then we stopped at Bud Murphy’s for a dinner bite. The
weather was perfect and we had a good time. We had a chilly, but nice ride to Penn
Alps and Candyland last weekend, Wally and Sharon were leading and throwing
Kleenex CHAFF from their bike so we didn’t get too close. LOL. But we still
managed to track them and stay behind them. I thought they were REALLY big
snowflakes, but no, just some tissues that go loose from Sharon’s coat. I did not
schedule any rides for May 7th. Weekend due to it being Mother’s day weekend and
folks probably want to spend time with their families. Also I did not schedule anything
for the following week. I was talking to a few people and it seems that weekend is one
that a lot of us have other plans to do something. If someone wants a ride scheduled let
me know and I will make up a sign in sheet at the gathering this weekend and do a
call-all to let everyone know about it.
Something new was brought to my attention last month. Wally called me to let
me know about Paul’s ordeal with getting his trike inspected at Tom Clark’s.
Apparently, if you own a trike, it is going to cost more for an inspection because they
are going over every spot on the bike. The inspection was almost $93.00. He was told
that Pennsylvania has sent a notice to inspection stations that they have to go over
every point on the trike conversion. As of today I still have not received any
notifications from the state about this and I receive the same bulletins. I checked back
to 2013 with my safety bulletins and can’t find anything about trikes. All of you might
want to call beforehand to find out what it is going to cost so you don’t get sticker
shock.
Take care and be safe, Tom

Cold Weather Starting
Because you have a wet clutch you need to know this
By: James R. Davis
For those that have been riding more than a year it probably is not new news, so consider it just a reminder.
Regardless of whether or not you have an indicator that says your bike is in neutral, ALWAYS hold your clutch all
the way in when starting your bike.
Next, and this one can save you pain and damage to the bike: ALWAYS hold your front brake (HARD) before
dropping the bike into gear - even when your clutch is being held all the way in.
Because you have a wet clutch, cold weather causes your oil to thicken and your clutch/flywheel tend to stick
together after sitting for several hours with the engine off. Because of this, merely holding your clutch lever fully
engaged is no assurance that when you drop into gear the bike will not jump forward unless you are firmly braked.

We have been reminded by the Assistant District Directors that if there is anyone
that hasn’t paid their dues to please see that they are brought up to date!
Just a Reminder for everyone:
There are a couple holiday weekends that fall on the first Sunday’s for our gatherings
this year. I have changed those dates so we can spend them with our families or put a
ride together for the extended weekends. They are as follows: July 3rd. gathering has
been moved to July 10th. September 4th, gathering has been moved to September
11th.
As you may know, we have the chapter anniversary picnic scheduled for Aug. 20 th.
Sandy Cochran is busy getting some goodies for the Chinese auction, we will have
bingo and we are hoping some of you that are planning on coming could bring some
outdoor party games for us to play, sadly, Rich Vogel is working almost around the
clock and he cannot loan us his games. I am looking into renting some games for the
day. If anyone has any, and willing to bring them, give me a call so I can add them to
the activities.
