06-June 2012 GWRRA C..
Busy Rally Month!!
This was really a busy month with the rally. In
the past, I just did what I volunteered for and helped
with other things that we did. This year was totally
different, making sure everything was taken care of.
Who was going to do what and seeing that it got
done!
I feel the Rally was a success! We gave
everybody the best time we could muster up. If they
didn’t have a good time, they just didn’t join in all
that we offered. Even the weather was mostly good!
We should know what we did shortly.
We need your help finding a theme for the next
Rally in 2013! So, put on your thinking caps, let’s
out do this years’ overall Rally.
We went over a lot of good ideas last night at our
debriefing, lots of good ideas came up! We need to
start putting next years’ together. When you go to
other Rallys and if you see something that might
work for us, write it down and bring it back. We
always need new ideas!
Something I have been toying with is my
conscience. I have to live with myself and so I want
to be fit for myself to know. I want to be able as
days go by, always to look myself in the eye. I don’t
want to stand with the setting sun and hate myself
for the things I’ve done or didn’t do. I can never
hide myself from me. I see what others may never
see. I know what others may never know. How is
your conscience?

P.S. Special “Thank You” to all that helped make
this years’ Desert Spring Fling “Camelot”
interesting, and for your help making our Sat. night
dinner and our Sun. night “Famous Prime Dinner” a
success also!

Tripping a Trike
By Tom Denny, Chapter WA-L Rider Educator
Trikes, classic trikes with one wheel in the front and
two wheels in the rear, are becoming more popular
every year. For those that can't or don't want to
balance a motorcycle at a stop trikes are a means to
enjoy riding in the breeze. They are generally
accepted to be more 'stable' than a motorcycle due
to their tripod footprint and they do not lean like a
motorcycle, instead they turn 'normally' like an
automobile enticing men and women of all ages to
try them.
Part of the argument
for riding a trike rather
than a motorcycle is
that trike riders don't
have to worry as much
about oil spots, gravel
patches, wet leaves or
other slick surfaces.
You could even ride a
trike on snow or ice
with relative safety.
Try that with your two-wheeler!
A trike has three wheels so it can't tip over, right?
While they are certainly more stable than
motorcycles at low speeds there are a few things
trike riders need to be aware of. Under certain
circumstances even a trike can tip over.
Most educated motorcyclists know that if the front
wheel of a motorcycle skids while braking the
correct thing to do is to immediately release the
brake, let the wheel roll to regain traction then reapply the brake. Many trike riders are also
experienced motorcycle riders and this is engrained
into their reflexes, the problem is that is not the
trikes, those with two wheels in the front, and for
the same reason.
The above scenario applies only to trikes without
anti-lock brakes. If you have a trike with ABS then
wheel lockup should not be an issue.
Another situation to be aware of while operating a
trike is braking while cornering. Motorcyclists are
taught not to brake heavily in a corner because of
traction issues. If you skid the front wheel of a
motorcycle in a turn because you over-braked while
cornering you will experience a "low-side" crash
where the front wheel slides out and the bike lays
down. If you over-brake in a corner on a trike you
can actually tip the trike over. Over the years I have
read of several un-witnessed trike crashes where a
trike left the road on a corner and no one knows
why. This is a serious type of accident and in many
cases the rider and/or passenger were seriously
injured or killed. I have wondered if those crashes
were
correct thing to do on a trike. If the front wheel of a
trike skids while braking it should be kept locked
until the trike comes to a stop.
Why? When a trike's front wheel locks up and skids
it will not travel in a straight line but will drift to
one side or the other and the rider will involuntarily
try to correct by turning the handlebars. If the front
wheel is allowed to regain steering traction with the
handlebars turned it will cause the trike front wheel
to suddenly veer. This virtually instantaneous
correction can tip the trike up on two wheels and
even roll it completely over. It is important enough
to repeat; if the front wheel on a trike locks up
while braking it should be kept locked until the trike
has come to a stop. This also applies to reverse
http://www.gwrra-wa-l.org/
caused by a trike being tripped.
What is tripping a trike? Imagine for a moment that
you are braking hard in a straight line; you can feel
yourself sliding forward on your seat under the
force of deceleration. When braking in a straight
line this force is what causes weight to transfer to
the front wheel. Now imagine going around a
corner rapidly. Can you feel yourself being pushed
towards the outside of the corner? This is
Page 2 of 11
centrifugal force and it causes weight transfer
towards the outside of the corner. When braking in
a straight line the front wheel carries that weight
transfer. While cornering on a trike the outside
wheel carries that weight transfer. When braking
and cornering at the same time the resultant weight
transfer is the sum of the two forces and results in a
weight transfer that is directed at an angle beside
the front wheel and in front of the outside rear
wheel. This weight transfer can pull the trike up on
two wheels and even roll it over since there is
nothing there to support that weight transfer, when
that happens the trike has been tripped. Just like a
person that catches a foot while walking.
A probable scenario is a trike rounding a turn when
suddenly the operator sees something in the road
and attempts to stop quickly. The resultant angular
weight transfer will immediately try and tip the trike
over. The effect is so rapid the rider is easily taken
unaware and has no time to correct.
To avoid this the trike rider should never brake and
turn at the same time. Turn then brake or brake then
turn but always separate the two actions. Trike
operators should practice separating these two
functions until becomes reflexive, because when
something happens unexpectedly it will be reflexes
that take over.
Every type of vehicle has its own unique behavioral
characteristics and trikes are no exception. If one
gets to know their trike and learns to operate it
properly there is no reason it can't provide many
years and many miles of safe travel.
Ride Safe.
Desert Spring Fling Bike
Show 2012
Our Bike Show this year was a little different. We
had 11 trikes and 15 bikes that entered. We had 80
Rally people out there voting on them this year. All
we asked was to vote on your favorite bike and your
favorite trike. As we did not put them in classes,
this year it was Trikes against Bikes. We had 3
winners from WA-L. On the Bike side, Mike Turner
came in second with his 2005 1800. On the Trike
side, Diana Domas got first place with her 2005
1800 Motor Trike and Ann Fox took second place
with her 2005 1800 Motor Trike. And for overall
most points Diana Domas got People’s Choice and
the Trikes took over the Bikes at the show. The rest
of the results are below.
