INFO.PACK BTW-UK CHAPTER BTW-UK Chapter Director: Email: [email protected] BTW-UK Region 10 Directors: Email: [email protected] Dean ‘Punky’ Barnitt Tel: 07912 101065 Shaun & Jackie Lloyd Tel: 01724 733464 Information & Forum : www.btw-uk.co.uk The BTW was founded in the USA in 1983 by Jim & Lady Sickler. Its purpose is to unite trikers from around the world, to provide and share trike and trikeing information. In 2002, BTW Europe & Overseas (EOS) was formed to take over the old and new members outside North America, Canada and Mexico. When Shaun (Hightower) and Jackie Lloyd joined the BTW-EOS in 2002, there were about four other members of the BTW-USA in the UK. Shaun and Jackie were appointed as the new Country Directors for the UK. The first BTW-UK Newsletter written by them was published in autumn 2003, and shows Hoagie as the CEO of BTW Europe. Unfortunately the BTW-UK received little or no support from BTW-EOS, so on the 15th January 2005 UK member’s re-joined BTW-USA. Since then the BTW-UK has been a Chapter of BTW-USA. We hope this information pack will answer some questions that you may have and let you know the sort of things that the Brothers of the Third Wheel get up to as part of this worldwide family association Brothers of the Third Wheel-UK Hi and welcome to the UK Chapter of one of the Largest Trike Associations in the World. BTW has over 5,000+ members worldwide; with approximately 400 based in the UK and Ireland. We are very active in fund raising for various charities including the Air Ambulance,Help 4 Heroes. And various local charities to BTW-UK members areas. Elsewhere in this information leaflet you can see some of he things our members get up to. As a Trike Association we do things a bit differently to other groups. Whilst we encourage members to join in the fun, attend area meetings, party, attend rallies, there is no obligation for any member to do anything. If you want to join in that's great, and we hope you do,but if all you want to do is read the newsletters that's fine by us. We are a VERY laid back group and have members all over the UK and Ireland. If you go to a local or major bike meet there will often be at least one of our members there. We also go on longer trips for the more adventurous members amongst us, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and USA are among the Countries visited by our members over the last couple of years. So you are interested and need to know more. Pick which area is nearest to you and see if there is a local meet. Everyone is more than welcome to attend our meetings and members there will let you know what is going on local to you. Or you can contact Punky and he can help you out with any questions you may have punkys phone number is 07912 101065. You will also be invited to join your fellow members at the yearly get together in July at the ' Threedom Rally ' celebrating all things BTWUK. Punky Chapter Director for BTW-UK FREE ON THREE KATHY 'BEANO' BARTON, FROM BROTHERS OF THE THIRD WHEEL, JELLS A SENTIMENTAL STORY There are quite a few public figures that you may know and who have been trikers. Did you know that Elvis had a VW-based trike in the 1970s? Metallica's James Hetfield has owned trikes and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler rides an amazing multi-coloured creation through the streets of Beverly Hills. Many of you will also have seen Billy Connolly's adventures abroad where he rode a purpose-built Rewaco trike in America. He owns a yellow Boom which he keeps at his home in Scotland. results that have been born from tapping into creative minds, resulting in something that is totally unique. From doing my own build - during which I also built many friendships as I asked people technical questions - I realised that not only did we have the bikes in common, but everything from lifestyle and humour to musical taste. There's a great community. www.btw-uk.co.uk A HISTORY LESSON But what of the history of the trike? This is quite difficult to pin down. Throughout the history of the internal combustion engine there have been three-wheeled vehicles. One of the earliest three-wheel motorbikes was made at the Harley-Davidson plant during WWII for the United States Army. My own recollection was in the summer of 1975 when I saw a Volkswagen-based trike carrying a long-haired hippy wearing a pair of bright red shorts and very large black work boots. He was also wearing a big grin on his face! The word 'trike' conjures up different images for different people. There are factory-built trikes, such as Rewaco and Boom, that produce amazing family-based vehicles which can cost anything from lOk upwards. Then there are the professionally built trikes designed and made by small UK companies which will take a donor motorbike chosen by the buyer and attach an axle to the rear of the bike to take two wheels. The frame can be either purpose-built or as a bolt-on adaption to the existing bike which enables it to be removed and turned back into a two-wheel machine. But for me, my favourite trike builds are those that are created by individuals in their garage or garden shed. You see some stunning The BTW was founded in the USA in 1983by Jim and Lady Sickler. Its purpose is to unite trikers from around the world, to provide and share trike and triking information. In 2002 BTW Europe & Overseas (EOS) was formed to take over the old and new members outside North America, Canada and Mexico. • BTW UK's members are spread throughout the British Isles, with Scotland only recently becoming a chapter in their own right. • Wherever BTW-UK members are you will find them raising money for various charities, particularly The Air Ambulance and doing Christmas toy runs to hospitals. • You will also find BTW-UK members taking part m 'The ride of respect' and MAC Demonstrations on bizarre Euro-enforced legislation. • The Trikefest rally, run by Tnkes R Us Tnke club, 1s held in May every year. •Trikers also come together for a National Rally, which is held around Area 51, Chesterfield, every year, and is open to both members and nonmembers. •The BMF is a highlight in the takers' calendar where they attend with marquees, trikes and enthusiasm for a 'show and tell” weekend offering the general public and fellow trikers an insight into what BTW-UK is all about. • In 2012, The BTW stand received 'Best in Show' BEANO'S BUILD - A TRIKE BUILD CASE STUDY My personal tale has been a journey of discovery which 1s still offering me new challenges and insights into the world of trikes and trike-building. I decided that three wheels were the way to go after many years of health problems and 1was sure I would be a lot safer and confident with the extra wheel giving me stability and support. I started wondering where I could buy a decent 'fixer-upper', as I wanted to at least part-build my dream machine. IN THE BEGINNING ... I soon found out that eBay was a good source of a variety of trikes from total basket cases to full on 'Family Boom Trikes' From the sublime to the ridiculous. I first had to decide on the power plant for my trike. This was quite easy as I'd been around motorbike engines for far too long to wave them goodbye and create a car- based trike Off to Southampton I went, to drag this Xl/70 se trike back home to see what I had bought. LABOUR OF LOVE My partner, Ian, and I set to work and soon had the trike in bits. I took charge of the metal and paint (and the fancy stuff that is quite irrelevant to the running of the trike) while Ian did the electrics and heavy work. I took the frame parts to Peter -now a great friend, as I spent many hours with him overcoming some of the nightmares He rewelded all the joins and I agreed to dress the welds to give the frame a smooth finish. He also made the large chrome rack from scratch at the back of the trike.. This also acted as strength for the trike because it was a bizarre m1sh-mash of old gas pipe barely welded together and set at rather jaunty angles. CHROME-WARD BOUND I sat down with Simon, from Bourne Brothers, and worked out the colour scheme and pattern design. I had a back bumper bar. handlebars and the rack all in steel. which needed polishing to a mirror finish before chroming. After six weeks of using wet and dry paper, polishing soap and wheels I had turned the dull metalwork into a thing of shining beauty. I also did the rear bumper and the handlebars that I had made to measure. KICK SOME ART Things were beginning to come together and I started focusing on the individuality of the trike. I decided I would name her after one of the Norse goddesses, Freya. Just think of Ride of the \valkyries by Wagner. A good friend of mine took my paper designs and turned them into CAD drawings so the metalwork company could laser cut them. BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME Once I had collected all the parts of this amazing Jigsaw I laid them out in my living room to get an idea of what she would look like. But I still had to work on the engine, part strip and lacquer the fins, which I baked in my household oven to cure. Then I had to spray the whole block which I had hung from my pergola in the back garden. And so this fantastic shiny jigsaw was put together. Then the moment of truth: all fluids in, a gallon of petrol and ignition! She started first time, roaring into life! Smiles and mutterings of ·thank God' were heard from my many friends who had helped with this adventure. Meetings In Your Area Area 1 : 1st Saturday of the month. 2pm.
