Imagine you were DEAF. Imagine you were BLIND. Think about how much you would have to depend on others to communicate. What if I told you there was a better way? Purple Heart Services (PHS), a premier provider of high quality technology products and services worldwide, tackles our countries greatest challenges in developing training programs for veterans with severe disabilities, assisting them in returning to the active workforce as productive members of society. All developed in our Research and Development Labs “Skunk Worx”. PHS is not about a hand-out, it’s about hand-up. PHS has embarked on a new mission “Project LIAB” (Lightning In A Bottle). The fundamental mission of LIAB is connecting veterans with severe disabilities in new ways. For example, a blind veteran would encounter difficulties with visual items, just as a deaf veteran often is not able to manage voice calls. However, a blind veteran with screen reading software can participate in a “chat” discussion with a deaf veteran who wishes to communicate regarding a customer service issue or wishes to use this blind veteran as a “relay operator” to communicate with a 3rd party, such as changing a doctor’s appointment. This is one of many ways LIAB works. The result is that we are facilitating communication where it was in the past difficult. We have restored their individual freedoms and in turn, their dignity that only comes from self-reliance. Utilizing tomorrow’s technologies, we can provide for a better today. Medical technology has allowed more veterans to survive the effects of combat, longnd term rehabilitation is then needed. Some veterans return home to fight a 2 battle: Learning to live with a severe disability. (MOS) SQUAD training is geared towards those with spinal cord injury (quadriplegia). With the use of H.K. EyeCan’s VisionKey technology these spinal cord injured veterans can communicate using only eye movements. Users can create documents, use email, and even “talk” using a voice synthesizer. When serving on active duty we often knew our purpose in the mission and served it well. However, sometimes in our worlds one moment changes everything and our directives and abilities are not so clear anymore. We struggle to find a new sense of purpose. PHS believes in assisting veterans to embark on a new mission and is here to help. A new purpose Purple Heart’s goal of (MOS) SQUAD training is to allow these individuals the gift of communication and to allow them to become productive. (MOS) SQUAD graduates utilize Adobe CS4 to help design and create web pages for the blind veteran to ensure web pages are compliant to government standards. With training from Purple Heart, these veterans can regain some of the freedom they have lost and also give back to another veteran in need. Who is PHS? Purple Heart Services (PHS) is a 501c3 charity managed by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation and has a long and rich history in the disabled veteran community.
