Free FAWM Concert Saturday
July 18th at the Crawford Center - Emlenton
Emlenton: FAWM is a
group of international
songwriters originally dedicated to writing an album,
14 songs, in the month of
February; thus the name
FAWM: February Album
Writing Month. The online
collaborative FAWM.ORG is
now twelve years old and
has thousands of members
worldwide, writing tens of
thousands of songs. Each
year they host a get-together and 2015 will be the
fourth annual FAWMstock
held in Emlenton. They say
they enjoy coming to Emlenton because they find
the scenic beauty, rich history and friendliness to be
inspiring. The highlight of
the weekend is the free Saturday night concert that
will be held this year at the
Crawford Center Auditorium on Saturday July 18th
at 7:00 PM.
Formerly hosted at the
Old Emlenton Mill Bunkhouse Hostel, this year
FAWMstock will be hanging out at the HB Mitchell
building hosted by David
and Becca Newbury (Emlenton Antiques) to write
their music. They will be
staying at the newly remodeled Best House and the
Barnard House Bed and
Breakfast along the Allegheny River in Emlenton. If
you see them around town
stop and say “Hi” and
maybe you will end up in
one of their original songs.
Some of this year’s participants will include:
Devin Malenson from
Canada. Devin is a singer,
songwriter, recording engineer and member of the
geek rock music duo Copy
Red Leader. Their album
“Crossing the Streams” was
released in 2014. Together
with Leslie Hudson, they
flirt with the dark side of
geek, playing everything
from rock to blues, metal to
bluegrass, funk to folk.
FAWM group from 2013 while at the Old Emlenton Mill.
Devin hosted the first
FAWMstock at his home in
Canada and has been
FAWMstock
soundman
ever since.
Jessica Graae blends her
folk-rock style and classical
training to create haunting,
soulful songs. Her “evocative, lush, exquisite vocals,
accompanied by elegant
and impressive guitar playing” create a “meditative
backdrop” on her CD
Gypsy Blood. Jessica is recording her second studio
album, scheduled for release in the fall of 2015.
Nominated for six WSTW
Hometown Hero Homey
Awards, Jessica is a 2013
Philadelphia Folk Factory
contest winner and a finalist in the 2012 and 2014
Delmarva Folk Hero contests.

DOUBLE
DRIVEL
Into The
Outdoors
With Dick and Mike
Andrew McCutchen is making his 5th straight All Star appearance. He becomes the first Pirate since Roberto Clemente
back in the 60’s to accomplish this fete. The only other Pirates
to have made 5 straight appearances are Arky Vaughan, Willie
Stargell, Bill Mazeroski, and Ralph Kiner.
Garret Cole and AJ Burnett are the first Bucco starting pitchers to be named All Stars since 1960 when Vernon Law and
Bob Friend were so honored.
Garret Cole at age 24 is the youngest Pirate All Star since
John Candelaria who was 23 when he was named.
This week’s All Star game will be the first since 1945 without a Yankee or Red Sox player in the starting lineup.
Sad to see the recent passing of former Oakland Raiders
great Ken “The Snake” Stabler. The Oakland Pittsburgh
matchups of the 70’s were probably the greatest games ever.
How Stabler is not in the Hall of Fame is beyond me.
This week the NFL offers something different. Instead of
players names ending up on police blotters they went with
visits to the emergency room. 2 NFL players lost a combined
3 fingers over the 4th of July shooting off fireworks.
Cal Ripken played 2,632 consecutive games. Joe DiMaggio
hit streak ended at 56 games. Now Joey “Jaws” Chestnut’s
streak of Nathan’s Hot Dog eating champiohships has ended
at 8. Matthew “Megaload” Stonie ate 62 hot dogs to Chestnut’s
60 to claim the coveted mustard-yellow championship belt.
All good things and records come to an end.
College football starts in less than 8 weeks.
Thought of the week: Sometimes you have to forget what’s
gone, appreciate what remains, and look forward to what’s
coming next.

Hope is Born Out of Pain and Sacrifice
By Chris Henderson
Ordinarily, at this time of
year, I would be writing
about fishing. However,
since the bulk of my fishing is
done in the Allegheny, I am
faced with a problem. The
river has been more or less
unfishable for most of the
summer. As of this writing, it
is high and muddy, with boats
more or less unseen. Rain is
in the forecast, so the outlook
is on the bleak side.
Last week, I saw something
I have never seen before. A
male rose-breasted grosbeak,
at our feeder, was feeding
sunflower seeds to a youngster, as if to show it how to
eat.
The focus of this week’s column is going to be a bit on the
nasty side. It is time, I think,
for a look at perhaps the most
useless creature on the earth,
the mosquito. Most of us are
aware of the fact that mosquitoes carry disease, but West
Nile virus is sometimes overlooked. While mosquito bites
are, by their very nature, itchy
and irritating, for some
people, being bitten by a
skeeter carrying West Nile
can be a serious matter indeed.
People infected with this virus may have no symptoms
at all, or very mild ones such
as fever, aches, rash or swollen lymph glands. In some
cases, though, symptoms can
include high fever, coma, convulsions, neurological damage and even death. In other
words, the disease is not
something to be taken lightly.
There is no cure for the condition, although medical measures can be taken to help afflicted patients.
Mosquitoes pick up the disease by biting infected birds.
After a short time, they can
transmit the virus to animals
and humans.
A major reason for the increase in the number of mosquitoes is the decline in the bat
population, due to white
nose syndrome. As near as I
can recall, I have not seen
even one bat this spring and
summer. In fact, it has been
several years since I have seen
even one. Bats eat mosquitoes by the thousands, so,
naturally, when the bat popu-

lation is down, the skeeter
population goes up.
It is interesting to note that
only female mosquitoes bite,
as they need a blood meal before laying their eggs, which
can amount to two to three
thousand in a lifetime. Also,
mosquito biting increases
five-hundred times when
there is a full moon. Surprisingly, you are more likely to
be bitten if you eat bananas.
Obviously, the best way to
avoid West Nile is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes in
the first place. There are
many effective repellants on
the market, many of which
contain DEET, a highly effective product. Although DEET
certainly works, much has
been written about potentially negative effects of the
chemical. There are a number of non DEET repellants on
the market, but the only one I
have found to be effective is a
product called “No Bite Me,”
marketed by SallyAnder
Soaps. For whatever reason,
it will actually turn bugs
around in mid air, and it smells
good to boot. It is not cheap,
but a little bit goes a long way.
The fact of the matter is that
many mosquito bites take
place in and around the
home. A few simple precautions can drastically reduce or
eliminate the pests. In order
to reproduce, the bugs need
standing water in which to lay
their eggs. Bird baths and
kiddie pools, when neglected,
provide excellent breeding
grounds. One of the most
common is old tires which
become filled with rain water.
Most of us know how hard it
can be to get water out of a
tire. Luckily, there are products on the market which kill
the eggs and larvae before
they can become mature, biting, disease spreading adult
mosquitoes. One should be
constantly on the lookout for
standing water, and dump it
out. A few simple precautions can really go a long way.
Nobody likes mosquitoes,
and it behooves all of us to do
all that we can to prevent
their spread.
Charitable
Deeds
Instead, he chose hope and he did it in two meaningful ways.
There is no greater act of
hope for a couple than to
have a baby, and Jason and
Alice have a two-year-old
son named Jase. But even
the path to parenthood was
littered with heartbreak because Alice endured a miscarriage, which was seen in
“When I Walk.” After everything else they’d gone
through, that felt like a devastating blow to me as a
viewer watching the documentary so imagine what it
felt like for them to go
through it. Once again,
however, they refused to be
beaten down by life. Alice
got pregnant again and
now they get a lot of joy
from the life they created
together.
In addition, Jason’s frustrations getting around
Manhattan in his wheelchair led him to start a
project called AXSMap.
com. Using the website or
phone app, it maps and
identifies the places in the
city that are most accessible
for people in wheelchairs or
with other disabilities. Or at
least it started in New York
City. Now, Jason and Alice
have generated volunteers
in cities around the world to
map their locales and let the
disabled know the stores,
restaurants, streets, and
modes of transportation
that can accommodate
them. If you’re interested in
helping, you can visit the
website and click on
Mapathon.
Jason and Alice’s example
of hope in the face of adversity is one story among
many from this year’s Christopher Awards. But theirs is
a special testament to the
fact that real hope isn’t
happy talk; it’s a worldchanging force born out of
pain and sacrifice.

The word “hope” gets
tossed around a lot, and
some people may see it as a
saccharine sentiment or
unrealistic happy talk. In
some contexts, that may be
true. But one of the ideas I
was left with after this
year’s Christopher Awards
is that real hope doesn’t
come cheap. It is hard won
through dire circumstances
that might have broken
other people.
For instance, there’s the
story of New Yorker Jason
DaSilva, subject of the TV
category winner “POV:
When I Walk.” Jason is a
filmmaker who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 25. As reported by
the website NewMobility.
com, which named him
their 2014 Person of the
Year, “Not only did doctors
tell him that he had multiple
sclerosis when he was just
25, but they added that he
had the worst kind: primary
progressive MS. It’s all
downhill. There are no FDAapproved drugs to treat it
and unlike some other types
of the neurological disorder,
there are no remissions.”
Despite the bad news, Jason mustered up the courage to turn the camera on
himself. “When I Walk”
provides a window both
into his own battle with the
debilitating disease – and
into the daily struggles of all
people with disabilities.
Unexpectedly, the film also
becomes a love story when
Jason meets and marries
Alice Cook, who gives his
spirit a needed infusion of
joy. Through triumphs and
tragedies, they carry the
cross of MS together, giving
witness to the power of selfless love.
Jason’s journey by himself
- and then with Alice - is a
testament to the type of
hope I’m talking about
here. He slowly loses the
ability to walk, finds his
speech and arm movements limited, and even
finds his eyesight faltering.
For a filmmaker, that’s an
especially painful development. Even with Alice by
his side helping him every
step of the way, Jason could
have decided to give up.

August Meeting: Tuesday, August 18, 2015 – 6:00 PM
River Valley Land Group is a collaboration between River Valley Energy and US Mineral Rights.
RVE has advocated for local landowners leasing interests for the past 5 years in negotiations
with SWEPI, Chevron, and Halcon, among others. There is clear evidence that landowners
joining together achieve higher bonuses, better share of royalties, and more landowner friendly
leases. Trips to local courthouses show recorded leases, that have the best terms and
addendums, are those through landowner groups.
RVE realizes this effort demands an experienced partner in achieving goals of maximum lease
value and protection to you, the landowner. That is why RVE selected US Mineral Rights, based
in Gibsonia, PA to manage and direct our future efforts.
River Valley Energy wants to share the US Mineral Rights story with area landowners. We invite
you to join us for our June meeting Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:00 PM at the Reminisce Center, on
Routes 38 and 208, (3 miles east of Emlenton), just off I-80, Exit 45. Thank you, Drew Orient
and Curtis Hovis founding members of RVE.

Red Brick Gallery Exhibition Features Two Artists
Carol Modery-Kilkeary Graphite and Oil Artist – Stacie Johnson-Leske Potter
July 17 – August 23, 2015
Foxburg, PA – Red Brick Gallery's next
installment for the 2015 exhibition series
will feature the paintings and graphite
drawings of Carol Modery-Kilkeary and the
pottery of Stacie Johnson-Leske. The exhibit will open on Friday, July 17 with a
meet the artists opening reception the following evening, July 18 from 4:30 p.m to
6:30 p.m. The reception will be followed
by a 7:00 p.m. concert at Lincoln Hall - The
Allegheny Drifters - Bluegrass Jamboree.
Carol Modery-Kilkeary became interested
in figure drawing while attending the Art
Institutes of Pittsburgh and Fort Lauderdale for fashion illustration, where she
freelanced as a fashion illustrator. Her path
took her back to school for mechanical
drafting. During this time, she worked as a
clerical to pay tuition. Her clerical career
continuted for the next 16 years, but she
always had the need to create art. While
working full time she
freelanced doing a variety of art commissions from animal portraits
to custom motorcycle
painting. In her retirement she was provided
the opportunity to pursue her passion for creative expression. Overwhelmed with choices,
Carol decided to go
back to basics: drawing with the goal to
draw well. "Graphite is a simple, honest medium that can
be pushed beyond
it's rawness, " Carol
said.
She has an impressive list of honors
and awards attained
for her art work. These include McMurray
Art League/ Galleria exhibit 2010, 2011,
2014 best of show (jurors Peter West,
World West Gallery; John Delmonte and
Mark Panza, Panza Gallery). She has received several jurors awards between
2010-2015. Most recently she won best of
category for still life and two jurors award
for still life and figurative in the 2015 Galleria exhibit (juror Barry Jeeter).
Carol's artistic achievements don't stop
there. The September issue of Street
Rodder Magazine features her husband's
1949 "tin woodie" station wagon on which
she painted all the realistic wood grain on
the exterior of the car.
“My work consists of graphites and oils,
mostly figurative and still life,” ModeryKilkeary stated. “I am inspired by contradiction of a subject - the coarseness of its
appearance, yet finding beauty in honesty
and form. My work is detailed and my objective is to pull the viewer into the piece.”
A Washington, DC area native, potter
Stacie Johnson-Leske was mesmerized by
dance as a child. She was fascinated by the
difficult jumps and turns that the delicate
dancers made that looked so easy and the
way they were lifted and tossed as if they
were weightless. She was also awed by
the strange and colorful costumes, the brilliant lights and dazzling sets surrounding
those beautiful and magical dancing creatures. She pursued her dream of becoming
dancer by attending the Interlochen Arts
Academy and the North Carolina School of
the Arts, where she earned a BFA degree.
Stacie began working with ceramics in
2002 when, as a Christmas present, her
husband arranged for her to take pottery
lessons. Her enthusiasm and talent led to a
three year apprenticeship with Jonnie
Kinney, an accomplished potter in Richmond, Virginia.
As a ceramics artist, she
is inspired by and employs
many lessons acquired
from her years of dance
training for a career as a
ballerina.
“For me, the clay is the
body of the dancer. I use a
gritless, white stoneware
which appears to be delicate and fragile, when in
truth, it has great strength and elasticity.
As my 'dancer' pirouettes on the wheel, it
flexes- expanding and contracting into elegant forms.”
“I am the music as I use the rhythm of
the spinning wheel to encourage the clay
to compress and stretch into fanciful
shapes which, like a prima ballerina, are
lightweight yet deceptively strong and durable.”
Once the form is complete, it is costumed
in richly colored glazes or textured in swirling black and white, enhancing the shape
and drawing the viewer’s eye.
Stacie continued, "As you look at a piece
of my work I hope you see the dancing,
laughing lines,
the unexpected
bursts of color
and the joyful
movement.”
"When you
hold a piece of
my pottery in your hand, you’re also holding a small piece of my childhood spent in
the ballet," she said.
Today Stacie Johnson-Leske lives in
Ridgway, Pennsylvania with her husband
and two cats.
This spring, Stacie opened her studio
and a gallery in a storefront on Main Street
in Ridgway. Her work is on exhibition in
several area galleries and she exhibits at
several fine art shows each year.

“Legacy”
(A glimpse into Emlenton’s Past)
Emlenton is a very small town with a
rich history. At one time there was not an
oil or gas company in the United States
that did not have a representative living in
Emlenton or had family ties to people who
lived in this town. One of Emlenton’s citizens changed the way citizens of Europe
illuminated their homes. A major league
baseball player from this town played in
the first World Series. Both, Bob Hope and
Honus Wagner, walked on Emlenton’s
streets. These are just a few of the facts
that will be explored in “Legacy”, a production conceived, collected and written
by Julie and Cathy Powell in an effort to
bring some of Emlenton’s history to life on
the stage.
In this production a group of four actors
in the form of reader’s theater will share
first person narratives of some of
Emlenton’s former citizens, while a multimedia presentation that will enhance the
viewer’s perception of the story will be
shown on a screen center stage. Some of
Emlenton’s founders and giants of industry will tell their stories, yet some of
“Legacy’s” tales come from ordinary folks
who in some way impacted the town.
Some of its citizens have left an inheritance
of buildings and trusts, others have left a
legacy of laughter in the stories they have
lived out and told. The actors portraying
these people will be Rev. Gary Brown,
Jenny Lowrey, Jeff Powell and Kathy
Soroka.
“Legacy will be performed on Friday
August 7 at The Crawford Center at 8 p.m.
tickets may be purchased for $8.00 at the
door or by calling 724-867-8000. Also a
pre-show dinner will be offered by Little It
Deli at the restaurant. The package includes dinner and tickets to the show. For
reservations call the above number.
Proceeds benefit the Pumping Jack Museum and the organization of a theatrical
group in Emlenton.

Even though summer is
here and people are taking
vacations and spending time
with their families, the Blueprint Communities Initiative
of the Allegheny-Clarion
River Valley Region is moving
toward completion of its
2015 Action Plan.
The City of Parker officially
received Trail Town Designation for the North Country
National
Scenic
Trail
(NCNST) on March 26, 2015.
The NCNST is a premier footpath that stretches approximately 4,600 miles from
Crown Point in eastern New
York to Lake Sakakawea State
Park in central North Dakota.
Passing through the seven
states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North
Dakota, it is the longest of the
11 National Scenic Trails authorized by Congress. Like its
sister trails, it was designed to
provide outdoor recreational
opportunities in some of
America’s outstanding landscapes.
The trail enters Parker on S.
Jackson Avenue, runs north
on Washington Street and
along the entire length of
North River Avenue, and
crosses the Veterans Memorial Bridge where it connects
with the Allegheny River
Trail. Dan Maurer of the Butler Chapter of the North
Country Trail Association is
working with Mayor Bill
McCall and Council Person
Marilyn McCall on this
project. A formal ceremony
will take place in the fall.
By the end of summer, placards will have been installed
through Emlenton to connect
the Allegheny River Trail
route through town.
Dave Staab of The Progress
News has donated a domain
name/website for the BCI and
is leading a team of volunteers
in developing the website.
The ACRVR Committee #3
is searching for properties in
need of facelifts. A grant opportunity offered by Glidden
Paints is available and offers
up to 20 gallons of outdoor
paint per building. Any building is eligible but historical significance is one factor used by
Glidden during the selection
process. Property owners
must
have
liability/
homeowners insurance, be
able to provide volunteers to
do the painting, and be able
to paint the building during
the September 1st – September 30th time period.
Emlenton residents – contact
Nancy Marano, Borough
Manager, at 724-867-8611;
and Parker residents – contact Marilyn McCall at 724399-0076 for application
forms. (NOTE: Property
owners are encouraged to
check with your insurance
agent prior to submitting
your application to ensure
that volunteers are covered
under your policy.)
