JANUARY
Paul Bunyan CommunicaƟons Board of Directors conducted its
monthly meeƟng on January 4, 2013. Also present were CEO and
General Manager Gary Johnson, CFO Dave Schultz, and AƩorney
Sheldon McRae.

The Manager updated the board on our CLEC projects.
Construc on in the Park Rapids area and Big Falls was
discussed. ILEC construc on was discussed.
•
Digital video was discussed. PBTV Lite, PBTV Fusion, VOD ,
and HD Channels were discussed.
•
Wireless licenses were discussed.
•
NTCA CEO, Shirley Bloomfield, a ended remotely to discuss
the proposed merger and Bylaw changes of the na onal
industry associa ons NTCA and OPASTCO.
•
The manager discussed proposed topics for the upcoming
strategic planning session.
•
A mo on was made, seconded and carried for the sale of a
vacant lot in Blackduck to the Blackduck School District.
•
Kathy Peterson was designated vo ng delegate and Tim
Hins alternate at the upcoming NTCA Annual Mee ng.

Gary Johnson was designated vo ng delegate and Dave
Schultz alternate for any future NRTC Annual Mee ngs.

2013 Caucus
Dates Set
There are two District Caucuses to be held in 2013. The purpose of
the caucus mee ng is to nominate a director candidate or candidates
to represent the district on the Paul Bunyan Communica ons Board
of Directors. The caucus is only open to members from within the
District.
The District 1 CooperaƟve Caucus will be held at 7 pm on
Monday, April 8 at the North Beltrami Community Center in
Kelliher. The current director from this district is Gary Eklund
and he will be seeking re-elec on.
The District 6 CooperaƟve Caucus will be held at 7 pm on
Tuesday, April 9 at the St. Mary’s Mission School in Red Lake.
The current director from this district is Vernon Clark and he
will not be seeking re-elec on.
Directors serve a five-year term, with these two District’s next term
expiring in the year 2018. Once a person or persons are nominated
at the district mee ng, up to two names are put onto a ballot and
voted on by the general membership of the Coopera ve. Votes are
tallied at the Annual Mee ng, and results are announced at that
me. Nominees with the greatest numbers of votes from the general
membership will be elected Director for the district.

Please refer to these qualifica ons when you consider your nominaons for a Director to represent your district or consider becoming a
candidate yourself.

the District, your caucus mee ng is also an opportunity for you to ask
ques ons concerning the Coopera ve. The mee ng will be a ended
by several key management staff.

Allows a VCO user to use one telephone line for speaking directly to the other person, while

Allows a person who is deaf, hard of hearing, or speech disabled to use a TTY to communicate with the other person on the call.

A hearing person may use a standard telephone to place a relay call and easily converse with
a person who is deaf, hard of hearing, or speech disabled.

Allows a person who has difficulty speaking or being understood on the phone to communicate using his or her own voice or voice synthesizer. The CA revoices the words of the person
with a speech disability so the other person on the call can understand them. No special

the following protocols: speeds ranging from 300 to 2400; 8 Bits; No Parity; 1 Stop Bit; Full

Allows a Spanish speaking person to use Minnesota Relay. The CA relays calls between a
Spanish speaking person with a hearing or speech disability and a Spanish speaking hearing

K-9 PROGRAM
P
aul Bunyan Communica ons recently made a
dona on to the Beltrami County Sheriff ’s Office
to acquire a new K-9 team a er the re rement of
three teams. These amazing animals help protect
our homes and businesses on a daily basis, and we
are happy to have them as part of the community.

FIRST RESPONDERS
T
he Lakeport Area First Responders provide an
important service to residents living in a 234
square mile area surrounding Laporte. Paul Bunyan
Communica ons is proud to help them serve the
area through a recent dona on.

Take Care Near Phone Pedestals
Many of you may see telephone pedestals at the end
of your driveways and along the roads that you travel.
With the amount of snow that has accumulated this
year, many of these pedestals are buried halfway if
not more. PBC wants to make our members aware
that it is important to avoid these enclosures when
moving snow.
Piling snow on and around these enclosures makes
it difficult for our technicians to do their job in a mely manner and increases the chances that damage can occur. PBC
takes pride in offering the highest quality of service and with our members help we can maintain that quality of service
throughout the year.
