HOWIE BECK
HOW TO FALL DOWN IN PUBLIC
On his 4th album, the intimacy of Howie’s music is
dragged into public view. How To Fall Down In
Public makes the case that modern melancholy is
best understood through sheer sonic pleasure. In
the past, some journalists tagged Howie as “The
Woody Allen of Rock.” Perhaps not so much for his
music, but for his public appearances; sometimes
neurotic, sometimes creative, funny and outgoing.
His response? “I’m telling you, that scene in Annie
Hall where he’s in the hotel room and cancels his
show? That is me.” Whatever the reason, reviews of
Howie’s previous albums have been nothing short
of glowing. And so, like Woody Allen, perhaps it is
fitting that Howie has experienced some of his
greatest success in Europe, as well as conceiving
his latest album there.

9. Beside This Life
Some songwriters make a New York album- Howie
made a Paris album. In July 2007, he touched
down with only his proverbial guitar and a notepad,
the first song he wrote being the appropriately-titled
"If I Ever Come Home."
At the legendary Studio Ferber in Paris,
Howie began working with long-time
friend and collaborator Gonzales (on
whose "Soft Power" album Howie played
drums). When he finally did "come
home", Howie reconnected with some
other members of his extended musical
family. Having played on Sarah Harmer's
All of Our Names, Howie called her in to
feature on "Beside This Life", a haunting
Chet-Bakeresque torch song. And Feist
adds her "la la la's” to a song called..."La
La La". The album was then recorded
and mixed by Howie at his own 4-walls
studios in Toronto, Canada.

AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD
Plenty of bands like to yammer on about how their
newest record is a “return to their roots,” as if some
undiscovered brilliance is to be found and
resurrected on early demos and basement jam
sessions. But the in case of ...And You Will Know
Us By the Trail of Dead (or Trail of Dead from
here on out, because who really wants to type all
that over and over), a return to form could be just
what the doctor ordered. The band’s 2002 album,
SOURCE TAGS AND CODES, sparked a near
universal rock-critic orgasm; after that, how could
their two follow up efforts match up? The Century of
Self is epic, and was clearly made without the gimlet
eye of a major label A&R person overseeing it. From
the soaring instrumental opener, “Giants
Causeway,” to the album’s closer, “Insatiable
Two,” which starts off with the sounds of a
demented circus and ends with an echoing singalong about Conrad Keely’s lack of monstrosity, the
record is a work of tremendous scope and ambition.

RICKY SKAGGS
Highways & Heartaches
Ricky Skaggs, now in his 38th year in the
music business, with his own successful record
label and a total of 13 GRAMMY awards
continues to reach beyond the musical
boundaries. He is wrapping up his tour with
Pop Artist, Bruce Hornsby, and an
outstanding video performance of ‘Old Enough’
with Jack White, The Raconteurs and Ashley
Monroe has just been released. With such
success across many genres of music, it
seems only fitting for Ricky to include the
addition of his ground-breaking country
masterworks to the Skaggs Family Records
repertoire. The first of these is 1982’s
‘Highways and Heartaches.’ Appearances
from Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Buck White
and Sharon White and the songwriting
expertise of Rodney Crowell, Larry Cordle, Bill
Monroe and Guy Clark join bluegrass and
country musical styles in holy matrimony,

concocting an organically original

Platinum, spawned three #1 singles
(“Heartbroke,” “I Wouldn’t Change You
If I Could” and “Highway 40 Blues”)
and solidified Ricky Skaggs as one of
music’s most influential singers,
instrumentalists and producers.

Secret Machines
Secret Machines
Secret Machines’ main attraction is the
more muscular sound, and how it
complements the themes. The
minimalist “Now You’re Gone” is the
sound of loneliness; “The Walls Are
Starting to Crack” is a six-minute journey
in chapters, the only through line being acorrect- assumption that the listener will
suspend disbelief and pop inclinations in
order to follow the skewed narrative. “I
Never Thought to Ask” is numb alienation
and stinging regret: The words come/but
they won’t stay. Final shot “The Fire Is
Waiting” is an ethereal, gospel-inflected
climax and cliffhanger, as everything
asked isn’t necessarily answered.
The record is a logical creative step for
The Secret Machines, over Now Here Is
Nowhere (2004) and Ten Silver Drops
(2006). It builds upon the foundation
established with those albums and their

well-received singles “Nowhere Again” and
“Alone, Jealous and Stoned”, showing The
Secret Machines have solidified as a band,
even in metamorphosis. It’s a nod ahead
of, yet not a departure from, the
psychedelic rock that has helped make the
Dallas-bred NYC transplants a fan and
critical darling in the US and Europe – not
to mention favorites of US’s The Edge and
David Bowie.

BUDDY & JULIE MILLER

“My hero. If you want to talk

should be nowadays, it’s
Buddy Miller.”

American guitar and
bring them roaring into the
present - reserved,
sympathetic and blistering.” Robert Plant
Written In Chalk
Buddy and Julie Miller have been writing and
making music together since they first met and
married over 20 years ago. Whether the end
result was a Buddy record or a Julie record, they
couldn’t help but collaborate and influence each
other’s work. New West is excited to release their
latest, Written In Chalk, a true collaboration.
The musical synergy this couple has with each
other is clear on the record and is rounded out
with a thoughtful country-soul vibe, emotional
lyrics, outstanding musicianship and of course,
Buddy’s extraordinary guitar playing. Guests on
the record include Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris,
Patty Griffin, Regina and Ann McCrary and Larry
Campbell. The record was recorded at the

Divinidylle
Six years after “Bliss”, Vanessa Paradis
is back with “Divinidylle”, which has just
debuted at No. 1 in France, selling over
65,000 copies in it’s first week. The
album has taken over two years to
create. Eleven vignettes. The lyrics are
definitely French. The music is as
Vanessa describes, “crossed both the
Channel and the Atlantic. Without
leaving Paris.”
The most striking feature on this album is
Vanessa Paradis’ voice – more spices
than sugar, these days. Flirting like
never before with the lower register. A
real pop album. Back to basics, almost
no frills. For all the characteristic
innocence and provocative charm that
have always been a trademark of
Vanessa’s music “Divinidylle”, first and
foremost signals her proud return to
energy-packed pop.

JOE BONAMASSA
The Ballad Of John Henry
Starting his professional music career at the age of 12, a child
prodigy, Joe first opened shows for blues legend B.B. King.
Since then, Joe has continued to play with B.B King as well
as other legends along the way, but still accredits B.B. for
giving him his "Big Break." The Ballad Of John Henry
coincides with Joe Bonamassa’s twentieth year as a
professional musician – Reflecting on the new album,
Bonamassa says, “I feel this is my strongest work to date."
The album’s lead and title track, “The Ballad Of John
Henry,” is a muscular blues rocker in homage to the
American icon who Bonamassa calls “the ultimate working
class hero.” He was inspired to write it while touring through
the U.S. and seeing things headed in what he felt was the
wrong direction. “It used to be,” says Bonamassa,” there was
dignity to being a middle class worker, making an honest
living. My mom and my dad are my heroes, working their
whole life at meaningful jobs that add to society. We need
more of those heroes these days, and that’s what this song
means to me. The Ballad Of John Henry’s covers include
versions of Tony Joe White’s “As The Crow Flies,” Tom
Waits’ “Jockey Full Of Bourbon,” Ailene Bullock’s “Funkier
Than A Mosquito’s Tweeter,” Anthony Newley/Leslie
Bricusse’s “Feelin’ Good” and the Sam Brown tune “Stop!”

by Greg Sutton/Bruce Brody. Bonamassa is
again backed by the stellar players Carmine
Rojas (bass) and Anton Fig, Bogie Bowles
(both on drums) as well as Rick Melick
(keyboards) and Blondie Chaplin (rhythm
guitar). The album is also Bonamassa’s first to
feature horns, courtesy of Lee Thornburg and
David Woodford.

The Lovely Sparrows
Bury The Cynics
Formed in 2005 by singer/songwriter Shawn
Jones, The Lovely Sparrows is the culmination
of over a decade of slugging it out in the
southwestern indie rock circuit. The earliest
incarnation of the band, which can be heard on
2005’s self-released Take Your Hats Off You
Godless Bastards 7Ǝ, reveled in Pavement and
Bob Pollard-style laconic fuzz pop.
TRACK LISTING:

2) Living Room
3) Larks and Owls
4) Bury the Cynics
5) Department of
Foreseeable Outcomes
6) Rene, Your Country
7) Teenage Viking
8) Year of the Dog
9) Devil’s in the Details
10) Prairie
Their early bash and pop revelry, however, was
to be short-lived after a romantic split between
Jones and bandmate Meaghan Perry stripped
away the band’s fuzzy, upbeat pop leanings.
Friends as well as former, current and
occasional members of the band contributed
their talents to flesh out the Pulling up Floors,
Pouring on (New) Paint EP, which was
released to small-scale acclaim on upstart label
Abandoned Love Records. The EP received
positive reviews from the likes of Harp and
Paste as well as a host of bloggers and radio
stations such as KUT, KVRX, and KSZU. The
band showcased at SXSW then
embarked on a few short tours of the
East Coast and Midwest, recording a
Daytrotter session and picking up
discerning fans along the way.
The Lovely Sparrows are a living,
pulsing amoeba of a band, deftly able
to stage a show with as few as one and
as many as seven members. The
release of Bury the Cynics will see
the band embark on its most extensive
touring to date.

programs and concert halls. Not only can
live versions of favorites be found here,
there are also tracks that have thus far
only been experienced by those brethren
partaking in the Jim White Fellowship of
Song that his concerts become. It includes
songs like “Jim 3:16” where he postulates
that a bar is just a church where they serve
beer and a live, unreleased version of
“Stranger Candy,” a beautiful song left off
his ‘Transnormal Skiperoo’ album that
makes us wonder what those honchos at
Jim’s label were thinking. Good tasting and
nice listening for all concerned.

Talking House Productions launched Blueprints
Of Jazz as a series that seeks to find and record
the greatest surviving jazz innovators, and record
the greatest surviving jazz innovators, and
present them to the casual music fan in an easily
accessible series that is both musically rich and
educational.
Influenced by Coltrane’s sound and the vibe of
the jazz scene in New York at that time, Billy
pushed forward with a big, majestic sound of his
own. Over the next ten years, the sound of Billy
Harper could be heard playing with some of the
greatest musicians of that era, including Gil
Evans, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Thad Jones, Mel
Lewis and Max Roach. Billy’s sound has
continued to evolve with a unique rhythmic
emphasis and vocal like character and always an
underlying spiritual quality as well. Never one to
join the latest fad or compromise for commercial
reasons, Billy’s music represents his true artist
vision. This vision can be heard on this record

MC Lars, the original Post Punk Laptop Rapper
returns with This Giant Robot Kills. The title is
from a meeting MC Lars had with his musical idol,
the legendary Wesley Willis, who told him "Lars
Horris! I like your songs, I'll write a song about
you. I'll probably write it on my next rock 'n' roll
record, which is called 'This Gigantic Robot Kills'."
Willis died soon thereafter, and Lars decided to
dedicate his new album to Wesley's memory by
naming it after that unfinished album. To complete
“TGRK”, MC Lars also called on Weird Al,
members of Wheatus, Simple Plan, Suburban
Legends, The Aquabats, Cobra Starship, The
Donnas, Parry Gripp, Paul Gilbert, his tour mates
MC Frontalot and YT Cracker and more. MC Lars
has toured extensively for the last three years
creating a solid fanbase the old fashioned way,
with a great live show. He has opened for the likes
of Bowling For Soup, Gym Class Heroes, Bayside,
Streetlight Manifesto, Simple Plan, Say Anything
