Friends,
Friends,
Welcome to the Twentieth Annual
Dinner Auction, the Roaring Twenties! For the
past twenty years we have gathered as a
vibrant community to celebrate and
invest in our children - our future. We are all
blessed to be part of such a loving
and generous community. Indeed, it is through
your charitable and unselfish acts
that your children and grandchildren - the
leaders of tomorrow-- will develop and

This evening's gala is the result of a
collaborative effort. We especially thank our
guests and benefactors whose generosity
helps to fund and maintain affordable
tuition rates. We thank parishioners, parents,
teachers, and students for their
generous participation and most particularly
our co-chairs, Wendy Pernas and
Carolyn Hawkins, whose enthusiastic
leadership has resulted in this beautiful
and joy-filled evening. Thank you again for
coming and supporting St. John the
Baptist, an example of Catholic education at
its best!

Prost, to magnificent evening!
Prost, to magnificent evening!
Thank you to all of you for
supporting “St. John the Baptist Auction is
Roaring 20.” Your support of our school,
catholic education and most of all our
children is what this event is all about!
Without your investment in our cause and
without the help of the many volunteers
who put in countless hours for this event,
we would not be here this evening. Thank
you for working as a team and coming
together as the SJB community to put this
event on.
Many thanks to the staff at SJB.
Their willingness to accommodate my
extended presence at the school, as well
as being welcoming and supportive was
much appreciated. A special thanks to
Dana Day, who always with a smile, would
try to do whatever myself or the auction
team was requesting. She always had a
generous heart and a good nature no
matter what I/we asked of her. She is an
invaluable resource to SJB as well as near
and dear to our auction team. Thank you
for all you do for us Dana!
To the auction team, thank you for
being who you are. We worked together
through thick and thin and we pulled it off.
It has been an experience of highs, lows
and everything in between. You were
friends before, but you have become very
dear to me this last year, thank you for the
experience ladies! I treasure you all.
Most of all, thank you to my family
for enduring the co-chairing of this auction
right along with me! You experienced in
stride and grace the demands of the
planning and carrying out this event
tonight. My husband John who helped out
wherever he could at home and to our 3
girls Emily, Ashley and Haley who had to
hear “Not now girls, mom is working on
auction stuff,” way too many times.
Please know I did it for you and for your
school. Now let us enjoy and celebrate
the 20th anniversary of this auction and
here is to another 20 years of SJB!

“I’ve gotten by. It’s funny how that
happens. You find a place, get a job, earn
a living, raise a family, the years go by.
Two things I’ve learned along the way: You
don’t have to save the world or even fix it;
just do good in your little corner. And it
helps to do your thing in concert with
others – folks who are like-mindedly goodintentioned (knowing full well that, along
the way, they will both amaze and
disappoint you.)” Kerry Temple, University
of Notre Dame
My husband sent me this quote one
day when something wasn’t going so well
while working on the auction. It certainly
rang true . . . there certainly were
disappointments along this journey of
being the Auction Co-Chair but there were
lots of unexpected amazements. What a
whirlwind of a year this has been. When I
decided to accept this position as Auction
Co-Chair, I’m sure my husband was a bit
nervous because he knows when I commit
to something, I give 125% and he knows I
have a passion for raising money for a
cause that is near and dear to my heart.
This cause being for our kids here
at St. John the Baptist Catholic School!
“SJB is My Family” is what we’ve been
hearing about in mass over these last few
months and I can truly attest to that
statement. At times, dysfunctional. At
times, we were crazy. At times, we just
laughed and laughed. But in the end, we
all came together! And for one cause –
our children.
I really need to thank Carolyn
Hawkins who joined me on this journey
and I think we definitely complemented
each other’s strengths. She is probably so
sick of seeing my face and hearing my
voice on the telephone! Thank you for
doing this with me, Carolyn. Thank you
also to Tracy Bienapfl and Emily Grasty
who were also probably so sick of my
procurement “guidance” and I’m sure they
are going to be so happy that I won’t be
asking them on a daily basis “did we get
anything?” Thanks to Cathy Hunter, who
luckily has a

luckily has a
great employer (Hanna Anderssen) –
because anytime we would call her with
data entry questions, she would drop
everything to answer them. Also thanks to
Lori Karambelas. She has truly been one
of the “amazements” stepping in wherever
needed and keeping track of all the
financials. Thanks to Darla Moyer (last
year’s Chair) who also gave lots of
guidance. Dana Day, we could not have
done this without you. You truly keep
things running in this school and you were
always there when we got stressed to
listen to us and I’m sure you won’t miss us
asking you to print labels, send out e-mail
blasts, etc.! Lastly, I’d like to thank my
husband, Jim, and my children, Nicolas
and Natalie. Thanks for never
complaining about our so-called “dinners”
and thanks for repeating things to me a
few times if I was in the “auction zone.”
Jim, thanks for making my life a crazy
adventure – here’s to more adventures. I
love you!
Thanks to all of you for your
donations, for your volunteer hours and
your presence here tonight. It definitely
takes a village to raise kids and my hope
for this evening is that we raise lots of
money for our beloved school. Here’s to a
great evening . . . I hope you feel that I did
some good in my corner!

The misfits.
