A few years ago I was asked to be the Master of Ceremonies for CYC. My friend assigned this word: putrid, an adjective meaning “in a state of foul decay or decomposition.” Finally on the last night of CYC, I have the opportunity! Ben and Travis get volunteers to take off their shoes and socks to play a game. They finish, and I get up and say, “Ben, there is only one word to describe that: Putrid!” One year—that was all I got; maybe it was the word. Words matter! Maybe not that word, but we do need to realize that words have great power! I love you, I hate you; I forgive you, I will never forgive you. Words shape and define our lives. The Bible says much about the power of spoken words. The Epistle of James leaves little room for us to misunderstand that our words do matter (3:2–18). His example of a bit and a rudder reminds us that our words give direction to our lives and the lives of others. How often do we throw words out like they don’t matter? Barry Binion Words give us the power to build up or tear down, the power to direct people’s lives for the better. Words matter. Choose them wisely! IN HIS FOOTSTEPS (copied) When someone does a kindness It always seems to me That’s the way God up in heaven Would like us all to be For when we bring some pleasure To another human heart, We have followed in His footsteps And we’ve had a little part In serving He who loves us— For I am sure it’s true That in serving those around us We serve and please Him, too. BENEFITS Highland Park Church of Christ will be hosting a benefit dinner for Maywood Christian Camp on Saturday, April 18, at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students. If any youth would like to serve and sing at the benefit, let Barry know. Also, anyone else wishing to attend should let Barry know today, so Highland can get a count of those planning to attend. There will be a benefit for Lindsay Watkins, relative of Pam Thomas, at the McCain Farm, 28850 CR 8, on April 18. Lindsay has stage IV recurrent metastatic melanoma. For more information on the benefit, pick up a flyer on the table in the foyer, or see Robert Coats. *<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>* SENTENCE SERMONS A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one would find fault with what he has done. Learning is like rowing up stream; not to advance is to drop back. Never stand begging for that which you have the power to earn. Don’t find fault with what you don’t understand. To worry about tomorrow is to be unhappy today. It is easier to go down hill than up, but the view is from the top. Do unto others as though you were others. Anyone with a heart full of frinedship has a hard time finding enemies. You make a living by what you get, and a life by what you give Little things are important; people stumble over pebbles, not mountains. Guest speaker Ted Burleson ***************************************** IN ANGER When I have lost my temper I have lost my reason too. I’m never proud of anything Which angrily I do. When I have talked in anger And my cheeks are flaming red I have always uttered something That I wish I hadn’t said. In anger I have never done A kindly deed, or wise, But many things for which I know I should apologize. In looking back across my life And all I’ve lost or made, I can’t recall a single time When fury ever paid.
