Dear Fellow Members:
As we look forward to 2016, we took a
few moments at our Annual meeting on
November 13th to thank our volunteers
and staff for making 2015 a year of
progress. I know that 2016 will be even
better.
Winter for astrological purposes does
not begin until December 22nd. The
passing of Thanksgiving, plus the nip in
the air today is a not so gentle reminder
of cold days and early sunsets ahead of
us. That is why we have a fresh cord of
wood in the corral by the dumpster and
whiskey is served at the bar!

SYC EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: A Monthly Column by
SYC EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: A Monthly Column by
Kerriann Brosky
DOUG McMILLEN – SYC Head Bartender
Doug McMillen has been the head bartender at Sagamore for three years. He lives in Jericho.
Kerriann – Besides making and serving drinks, what does your job entail?
Doug – I do inventory. I work with the bar chair to come up with new things for the drink menu, and I
help with staffing of the bar.
Kerriann – What is your specialty drink?
Doug – Dark and Stormy and Bloody Mary’s in the winter. They’re always good.
Kerriann – Did you go to bartending school?
Doug – No. I received a TIPS Certification instead, which is more for liability purposes. It’s to
understand what to look for, what to recognize, when a person drinks too much.
Kerriann – Where did you work before Sagamore?
Doug – Before Sagamore I was at Jack Halyards. I bartended there for a little over a year.
Kerriann – Do you have other work you do outside of Sagamore?
Doug – I work for the Meadowbrook Club in Jericho. I bartend for them as well. I’ve been there two
years. I do that on the weekdays usually; days when I’m not here.
Kerriann – What are your interests? What do you do for fun?
Doug – I play golf, I work out a lot. I try to do a little bit of hiking and skiing. I’ve done trap shooting,
which is similar to skeet shooting. One of my goals for this year is to try Sagamore’s skeet shooting.
Kerriann – What do you like best about working at Sagamore?
Doug – It’s a great group of people – members and staff, and it’s a very friendly environment. I feel
like I’m at home here.
Kerriann – What is the most challenging thing about working at Sagmore?
Doug – Putting together a great variety of drinks and keeping the costs down, especially with our
wines, while still giving high quality products. And Wednesday nights in season can be tough, with
everyone coming in [from sailing] at the same time.
6
Kerriann – What is your strategy for handling Wednesday nights? Do you have one?
Doug – Just make as many drinks as quickly as possible, and I try not to socialize too much.
Kerriann – What has been interesting about working as a bartender here?
Doug – Learning about sailing. I’d like to learn more. I’m definitely interested in the nuances of
sailing, and hopefully getting out on the water with some people.
Kerriann – What has been your most interesting experience here?
Doug – I guess meeting Billy Joel on Mother’s Day of this year. That was pretty cool. He was nice.
Very friendly and casual. I wished him a happy birthday.
Kerriann – How is working at Sagamore different than working at other bars or restaurant bars?
Doug – Whenever you work at a club, you just get to know people better. You have the same
customers every time, so you get to know their habits and what drinks they like. It makes it nice.
Kerriann – What days/nights are you here?
Doug – I’m here Wednesday 4-9 pm, Friday 4-9 pm, Saturday 3-10 pm and Sunday 2-9 pm.
Some final comments from Doug – It’s great to work here. I appreciate everyone’s feedback, and we
try to do as much as we can to make sure everyone gets what they want here.

CONNECTIONS TO THE PAST
Those of you who were at the last membership meeting heard Commodore Jerry Lalonde and
other officers of the club naming and thanking the various committee chair people and those who help
them do the tasks that make our club the wonderful club that it is. This is certainly a connection to the
past and one that has gone on since the club was founded in 1944. Volunteerism has been the main
force keeping us going and growing. I can remember hearing people complain in the 70’s and 80’s
that the club was being run by a ‘clique’, a word that I haven’t heard in a long time. It is defined as an
‘exclusive’ group of friends or associates! These volunteers have NEVER been exclusive to my
knowledge. If the same people are coming forward all the time I know that they welcome new friends
and new ideas. All of us have many things on our plates but the more you get involved, the more
people you will meet and the more fun you will have.
My photo connections this month are from February 1981 and 1991. They were taken at the
annual Chairmen’s dinner (yes, Chairmen although some of us were Chairwomen) when the
Commodore and his board donned their aprons and took it upon themselves to serve dinner to those
who had volunteered in the running of the club for that year. These might have been the house and
grounds and waterfront chairs but also the many who helped with entertainment and social events and
all the other committees. There were many hands and some of them are still members. The Gentiles
ran Italian night for many years with members preparing the great meal. More on this subject in the
future.
Our photos include two groups of waiters. From 1981, in the white aprons are Charlie
O’Connor, John Conroy, Commodore Ed Flanagan, Dick Maggi, Al Richman and Ray Searby. From
1991, in the red aprons are Len Hecht, Commodore Joseph Gentile, Phil Kilean, and Jack Kern. Most
of these guys continued on to be Commodores. Talk about dedication. Commodore, Ed Flanagan can
be seen in the picture of him serving the membership at three very long tables. The candle blower is
Al Richman, (‘87 and ‘88).
Last month we asked if anyone could name Betty Johnson’s ‘day job’. Betty was asked to do
the makeup for the Sagamore Players and the models for the many fashion shows we put on. Since
Betty was a mortician, she readily agreed but said we would have to lie down first. Thanks Doris
Gentile for remembering that.

DECEMBER, 2015
Members of Sagamore,
A few short years ago a group of members came up with an idea to bring Junior Sailing back to the
waters in front of our fair club. I will say this group worked very hard to make sure the program
would run well from day one. On June 24, 2013, Junior Sailing at Sagamore YC was reborn. Over
the next few summers, the number of children per season grew. I am not writing to dwell on the past
but more importantly explain why I think our Junior Program has and will again and again, open
doors for our young sailors. As an example, a few years ago, Ryan Brosky at the age of 12 steered a
33 foot boat in the spinnaker division, winning the Commodore’s Cup. Just this year, it was repeated
by 9 year old, Evan Furman. These two young men would not have been given the opportunity to
steer this boat at all if it was not for what they learned on the Optis and 420s in our Junior Program. I
would like you to imagine a young helmsman, while steering this large boat, observes 7 crewmembers
work as a team to help him sail the boat as best he can. What he saw from the crew was teamwork,
discipline and a constant lookout for fellow sailors as the crew goes through one maneuver after
another. How can some of these important qualities not rub off on our young children and fortify
many of the teachings in the Junior Program?
To me, this is just the beginning, and we have just arranged a few of our young sailors from our Junior
Program who, next spring, will get to practice on “470s”, an Olympic Class two man boat and will be
taught by a past Olympian sailor. I have always felt that the sailing community is small but with wellconnected people. Through this community, a young eager sailor will get to see opportunities open to
them that would not normally be there. It is our volunteers and donors who understand this and want
our Sagamore children to be there as these opportunities unfold.
Since we are in the season of Thanksgiving and the Holidays, it is only correct that I turn to the ones
that made this all possible and thank them for their time and their generous gifts for the children of
Sagamore. To our Officers and Board members who in 2013 not only initially provided the seed
money but also to a group of volunteers, with no experience in running a Junior Program, their trust!!
To the volunteers: Bill and Melissa Peterson, Barbara Curry, Rich Furman, Tony Miraglia, Ray Wulff,
Conny Baris, Todd Field, Georgia Gehrling and John Hoban. To the ever growing group of members
and non-members who have donated to our Junior Program, for the sole purpose of advancing our
young ones in the art of sailing, their names are proudly displayed on a plaque in Sagamore’s club.
This year alone, the following have donated funds, Ray and Ann Wulff, Leonard & Eileen Hecht,
Herb & Maryann Rocchi, Peter Robinson, Bill and Melissa Peterson, Tony and Maryellen Miraglia,
Conny and Elizabeth Baris, Georgia and Mike Gehrling along with non-members: Raymond &
Jennifer Wulff, from Annapolis and Richard & Cheryl Young, from Myrtle Beach as well as the
Windmark Sailing Foundation .
So, to all those mentioned above and to the parents of our Junior Sailors, we would like to wish you
Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
With warmest regards,
Mike Gehrling and Bill Peterson

Annapolis
On October 8, six members of Sagamore Yacht Club attended the Annapolis Sail Boat Show.
Raymond and Ann Wulff, Alan and Janet Schaub, and Robert and Jeanne. The weather was
spectacular as we boarded the newest vessels being offered for sale. My favorite was the Hallberg
Rassey 43 optioned to the tune of $ 800,000, sail away. The least expensive option was the wine
locker built in to the bilge. I have to get one of those someday.
But the highlight of this show was the invitation extended by the Wulff’s son and daughter-in-law.
Raymond and Jen Wulff are members of the Annapolis Yacht Club, which is just steps from Ego Alley
and commands the entrance to Spa Creek. Through their courtesy we were provided with a three day
guest pass to use the facilities of the Annapolis Yacht Club. The AYC takes their sailing very seriously.
Racing is their game. Since 2000, AYC has hosted World Championships, Hemispheres, North
Americans & East Coast Championships for a multitude of classes including the International Star
Class, Etchells, Farr 40, Beneteau 36.7, Mumm 30s, J/22, J/24, J/30, J/35, J/70, J/80, J/105, and J/109
fleets as well as a three-time host of the Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship. The
Wulffs have done their part in adding to the collection of Silver that is displayed throughout the club.
Jen Wulff crewed on Plenty which won the Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship. Though
you have to love a Yacht Club that doesn’t take itself too seriously. They start their racing season on
January 1, with the Hang Over Bowl. Drinks anyone?
My new year’s resolution is to obtain reciprocity with Annapolis Yacht Club, so that Sagamore’s
members can enjoy the grand experience of AYC when visiting the sailing capital of the East Coast.

SYC CONNECTIONS & FAQ’s
How do I learn about upcoming events?
We rely heavily on email notices to keep members informed about upcoming events, so it is important that we have
your current email addresses on file, and yes you can provide us with more than one; send updates of email
addresses to Secretary Alan Schaub at “[email protected]”. Another important communication tool we
use is the Scuttlebutt, which includes information about activities at the club, and who to call for details of each
event. You should also be familiar with our website at www.sagamoreyc.com; there you will find a calendar of
upcoming events, current and past issues of the Scuttlebutt, and much more.
I plan to come down to dine - what do I do?
Check the weekly email from Dining Chair Lindsay Thornton for hours and specials, and then go the website to
make your reservation on-line; you can also enter and save this link to avoid a few keystrokes each time:
www.sagamoreyc.com/dining/.
Food & Bar – who should I tip, and when?
You should reward our employees who provide excellent service, just as you would in any restaurant. Food
servers are tipped separately from the bartenders, and each will have a cash tip jar for that purpose; we are
not set up to allow tips to be put on credit cards or charged to house accounts. (The only exceptions are: 1) special
club events where tax and tips are included for the food servers, but not the bartenders, and 2) private party
events, where all tips are included.)
What about tips for launch drivers?
Regular members acknowledge our professional launch drivers in the manner of their choice; some will tip on each
trip, some will tip annually at the holiday season.
I am thinking of having a party at the club - where do I start?
You start by contacting our Private Party Chair Jeanne Lafiteau. You can reach Jeanne via email at
“[email protected]” or by phone at 954-560-3668.
I know someone who may be interested in joining the club - who should they talk to?
They should contact our Membership Chair Kevin Curry by email at “[email protected]” or
phone at 917-881-3933.
I have a question about my monthly bill or statement - who do I call?
Our bookkeeper, Shelly Fishman, is in the office Mondays and Thursdays; he can be reached by email at
[email protected] or call the office on Mondays and Thursdays at 516-922-0555.
Why do I have to handwrite and mail a check each month?
You do not. Many members have found that the most convenient way to pay bills is to take advantage of their
banks free on-line bill paying, and they have added Sagamore Yacht Club as a payee. Paying bills on-line through
your banks highly secure systems is free, safe, easy, saves you the cost of postage, and you do not need the clubs
bank account information to set up on-line bill payment. (Some banks also offer free or low-cost ach payments, and
if you prefer that form of payment, we can accept ach transfers as well; email Treasurer Rich Denby at
[email protected] and he will provide you the clubs bank account information.)
I lost my key fob or it has stopped working, how do I get a replacement?
Occasionally the key fobs will get “de-magnetized” and no longer function. Our Treasurer, Rich Denby, is also our
Security Chair. He can be reached by email at [email protected].
I have an idea, a comment or a question - who do I contact?
Officers and their Committee Chairs are listed in the Roster and on the Officers Board in the front hall. If you are
not sure which Officer or Committee Chair to ask, you can always contact Commodore Jerry Lalonde by email at
[email protected] or phone at 516-297-7773.

DECEMBER, 2015
Monthly Dining Minimum Effective January, 2015
Effective January 2015, there is a $50 per month Dining Service minimum spend
requirement, as discussed at our Annual Meeting in November.
Some frequently asked questions and answers:
Will I still get billed $250 annually for “Food Chits”? No, you will see a reduction in your annual billing,
as we will no longer charge for “Food Chits”.
How does the minimum billing work? Each time you dine, you simply sign, it’s our “Dine and Sign”
policy. If you spend more than $50 in a given month, that is the amount you will be billed at the end of
the month, plus tax. If you spend exactly $50 in a given month – that is the amount you will be billed at
the end of the month, plus tax. If you spend less than $50 in a given month, you will be billed $50,
plus tax, that is where the monthly minimum comes into play. You will receive the bill in the mail, which
can be paid by check only, no credit cards.
What about tips? Tips are not included in regular dining bills, bar bills, or monthly minimum bills, and
you are asked to tip your waiters and bartenders in cash each time you dine, except for Special
Events.
How do tips work for Special Events? Pricing for all Special Events will include Tips, and Sales Tax as
well.
Do Special Events count towards the monthly minimum? No, they do not.
Do bar purchases count towards the monthly minimum? No, they do not.
If I bring guests and I sign for their meals, does it count toward the monthly minimum? Yes.
Can I “carry-over” unused minimums and make up for it in subsequent months? No, that would not
provide the club the benefit of the monthly minimum policy.
Why did we change to Monthly Minimums? The new Dining Service offered in 2014 was so well
received, we wanted to continue offering it in 2015. After considering numerous options, we
implemented the new policy to offer weekend service in the off-season, which allows us to be prepared
for ramping up to expanded service in-season. Full-year service involves a cost commitment, and the
monthly minimum allows us to cover those costs without increasing dues.
What about the bar? There is no minimum monthly spend requirement for bar purchases. You can
either settle your bar bill with a credit card each visit, or simply sign. If you sign, the bar purchases will
be added to your monthly dining service bill, plus tax. Bar tips are not included in bar bills, and you are
asked to tip your server in cash each visit. Also effective for 2015, we will allow members to bring their
own bottles of wine to regular dining service, not Special Events, subject to a $20 per bottle corkage
fee.

To All Members
Please remember that the Club is for us all to enjoy with fellow
members, and the occasional guests, whether friends or family.
If you are planning to come to the Club with a total group of 12 or
more members/friends/family, you must contact our events
coordinator Jeanne Lafiteau ([email protected]) to ensure there
are no conflicts with scheduled events.
For larger groups, the Club is available to Members for private parties,
and Jeanne can assist you with making those arrangements.
Within the above guidelines, you are welcome to bring your own food
only when food service is not being offered; and you may BYOB only
when the bar is not open. Please clean-up and place all trash in the
trash receptacles or recycling bins.
Parents of young children, for the safety and enjoyment of all, please
