Dear Fellow Broadcaster:
Thank you for taking time to look over this booklet, which introduces our 2003
graduates and tells a little bit about Vincennes University Broadcasting.
Vincennes University Broadcasting has two goals: to prepare qualified graduates
for successful employment in Radio, Television, and allied career areas and to
prepare them for transfer to four-year schools after their graduation from VU.
This booklet will explain how we prepare our students to be productive assets to
your business. The major advantage our graduates have over graduates of other
Broadcasting Programs is “Hands-On” experience. Within this booklet you will
read descriptions of the extensive exposure to “real-world” broadcasting that our
students are required to experience.
Also, this booklet lists graduates of our “Broadcast Sales” option. These students
have been specially trained in the area of broadcast sales and all come with actual “on-the-street” sales experience.
There are many reasons why more and more stations and allied businesses are
turning to VU whenever they have entry-level or mid-management openings.
The main reason, though, is the same as it has always been - our students have
solid training in the basics, receive countless hours of hands-on training, and
know what it’s like to work in the broadcast business!
Please take a few moments to read this booklet, and if you have any questions,
feel free to call me at (812) 888-5250. Better yet, take some time out of your
busy schedule and pay us a visit. We’re sure you’ll like what you see!
Sincerely,
John Hitchcock
Chairman of Broadcasting

WVUT-TV / WVUT-DT
WVUT-TV is the University’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana through the combined
efforts of staff and students. Students are involved daily in all operations of the station.
A daily 30 minute newscast, “Newscenter 22,” is
broadcast live at 5:00 pm and re-broadcast at 11:00
pm. “Newscenter 22” has been presented with a
Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the
Non-commercial TV category, by the Indiana
Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the
news, sports, and weather, shoot and edit stories,
switch and direct, and operate all equipment
necessary for the production. WVUT-DT is
the first public digital television station to go
on-air in Indiana.
Page 35
WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,”
a public affairs magazine program.
Students produce, edit and shoot
program features and help co-host
the program. They also produce
public television promotional
materials and commercials for
outside clients.
Page 36
Radio Production
In addition to four on-air radio stations, there are eight audio production rooms
that contain a variety of professional audio production equipment. In the VU
tradition of “hands-on” training, students learn to operate every piece of audio
equipment in every studio. Students are required to use these studios for various
projects. From our Tascam 8-track audio recorder and multi-channel console to
our “Cool Edit Pro” 64 track digital editors, students learn and practice on the
latest audio equipment. The Broadcasting Department faculty works directly
with students in both formal and arranged lab situations.
Page 37
TV Production
Through the combination of staff
and students,
WVUT-TV 22
produces more
hours of local production than most
public television
stations. This
could not be
accomplished
without staff and
students working
together to accomplish daily tasks
and goals.
Students are crew members for the nightly newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, and
other productions throughout the year. They also work as crew members and directors of the
university’s “distant learning” college credit telecourses facilities located in separate studios at
WVUT. They may become paid crew members for live statewide satellite uplinked telecourses
taught by university professors.
“The major
advantage VU
Broadcasting
grads have
over other
programs is
hands-on
experience.”
Page 38
WVUB — Blazer 91.1
91.1 WVUB, is a Hot Adult Contemporary/Contemporary Hit Radio 50,000 watt
Public Radio Station. WVUB is affiliated with the Associated Press and Public Radio
International. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up to date information and enable WVUB to provide quality programming to a wide base of listeners.
WVUB is staffed by students who perform most of the on-air duties and production
for the station. Students work with the AudioVault Computer system when on-air,
providing them with training they otherwise would only receive at commercial stations.
Students on WVUB are
supervised and trained
by Broadcasting faculty
and staff who have
backgrounds in the
commercial industry.
On-air performance,
improving communication skills and keeping
the audience entertained and informed are
just some of the goals
students work toward
when on-air.
WFML-FM
WFML-FM, “Hot 96.7,” is a commercial radio station staffed and operated by professionals who work with the students in many areas. Students engineer sporting events,
go on remote broadcasts, and work with the sales staff.
Page 39
WROL-FM & WROK-FM
WROL-FM (87.9) and WROK-FM (88.5) are low power stations that are formatted
much like regular commercial radio
stations. WROK-FM is a classic
and current rock music station while
WROL-FM plays the latest contemporary pop, rock, and urban music.
First year students have required
shifts on these stations to develop
their on-air presentation skills.
Advanced radio students are staff
members for these stations and
develop skills in many practical
areas of station operations.
Remotes
A variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year ranging
from men’s and women’s college basketball, volleyball, political debates, and election
returns to the Miss Vincennes University Scholarship Program (winner of the Indiana
Public Broadcasting “Best Performance Award).”
Page 40
Multimedia
Students can catch the wave of the future and enter the BROADCASTING-MULTIMEDIA
OPTION. Multimedia is the creative union of graphics, animation, audio, video, and text to
produce an informative, eye-catching visual multimedia display that may end up on the
INTERNET or on an Interactive-CD. This option provides students with the basic skills and
techniques to move into this fast growing, challenging, and rewarding field.
Students in the Multimedia program gain a working knowledge of equipment and procedures in
a project based environment. In the computer lab, students utilize Final Cut Pro / I-Movie and
Linear Editors to develop skills in multimedia authoring and animation.
Page 41
Broadcast Sales
Option
Vincennes University Broadcasting offers a “Sales Option” in its Broadcast
Production Technology program. Students who successfully complete this option
develop a more specific background in broadcast sales. Radio, television, and cable
selling techniques are presented and practiced. The successful Vincennes University
Broadcast Sales student has a working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating
techniques and uses, local, regional, and national selling differences in addition to
direct and agency selling skills.
Vincennes University’s commercially programmed WFML is a working laboratory
for the Broadcast Sales students.
Based upon the strength of our sales option, graduating students will receive Radio
Marketing Professional certificates from the Radio Advertising Bureau. This places
our graduates in a higher level when interviewing for a job. Vincennes University is
the only college in the country “partnering” with the RAB in this manner, and
shows our commitment to preparing students properly.
“All graduates of our Broadcast Sales Option
come with ‘on-the-street’ sales experience.”
