Established in 1697, the Ursulines were the first

took possession of their monastery three years
later. For years, the Hotel-Dieu arranged within the
cloister served as a general hospital. The community
closed it in 1886 to devote itself to the education of
young girls. Numerous additions were added over
the years. The former hospital was converted into a
museum in 1982 (see number 57 on page 19).

Having arrived in Trois-Rivières in 1693 to run the
missions, the Récollets, a branch of the Franciscan
Order, proceeded to build the convent in 1742 and
the church in 1754. This establishment was used
as a hospital, a store, a courthouse, a prison, and

Originally from Brittany, the Daughters of Jesus
have been active in education since their arrival in

MONUMENTAL STAIRCASE
34
>> Where It All Began
Begin your walking tour at the foot of the
monumental staircase, where Trois-Rivières was
founded. In fact, this is where the first trading
post was set up by Laviolette, the founder of
Trois-Rivières, in 1634. Trace the history of the city
by following the important facts engraved on the
steps until you reach the sommet du Platon.
LE PLATON 35
>> The Origins of Trois-Rivières
In the beginning, the Aboriginals considered this
location strategic, as it was elevated and jetted out
into the river, making it a perfect spot for trade and
for seeing the enemy. It was on this same mound
that Laviolette erected the first building in 1634,
which he surrounded with a palisade.

Toward the end of the 20 th century, a public park
was put up on the Platon near the governor's
house, and the construction of the Terrasse
Turcotte in 1869 further encouraged the business
elite to socialize on the Platon.

>> Corner of St-François-Xavier
and Terrasse Turcotte streets
Erected as part of the city's 300th birthday
celebrations, this monument pays tribute to Pierre
Gauthier de Varennes, Sieur de la Vérendrye
(1685-1749), and to other Trifluvians who explored
various territories on the continent. Look behind
the pedestal of the bust to discover the inscription
engraved in the stone. Jean-Jacques Cuvelier is
the sculptor, R. Jaffray, the founder, and Ernest
L.-Denoncourt, the architect. Radisson and
Médard Chouart Des Groseilliers discovered Lake
Superior and Hudson's Bay. Nicolas Perrot explored
the Mississippi and the American Mid-West.
The sons of Pierre Gauthier de Varennes and of
Lavérendrye discovered the Rocky Mountains.

>> 784 rue des Ursulines
Arriving in 1697 with the mission to educate
and nurse, the Ursulines founded a convent in
Trois-Rivières and took possession of the current
monastery in 1699. The building was expanded
several times over the years, as shown by the
façade, which features elements borrowed from
different eras. A dome looks down on the chapel,
and the sundial adorns the western wall of the
monastery. The garden providing access to the
Ursulines Monastery was used as a vegetable
garden. The monastery has been a cloister, a
school, and a hospital.
MAISON
HERTEL-DE-LA-FRESNIÈRE
40
>> 802 rue des Ursulines
Classified as a historic building in 1961, this house
owes its name to the illustrious Trifluvian family of
Joseph-François Hertel de la Fresnière, nicknamed
the"hero"due to his military exploits. The house is a
fine example of the urban architecture in style in the
1820s. Notice the fireproof headwalls on each side.
RÉCOLLETS ST. JAMES
HERITAGE SITE
41
>> 811 rue des Ursulines
The Récollets settled in Trois-Rivières in 1692.
They built a chapel and a presbytery out of
wood in 1742 and 1754, respectively. In 1776, the
Récollets abandoned their parish and their convent,
because there were not enough settlers, so the
site has had many uses over the years. The British
government then took possession of it. In 1823,
the buildings were ceded to the Anglican Church,
which consecrated the site under the name of St.
James. The site was recognized as a historic site in
2003. The site has had many uses: hospital, prison,
courthouse, Protestant place of worship, and depot
for medical material.

MAISON DE GANNES
42
834 rue des Ursulines
Who was Georges de Gannes? A major in the
French Navy who had the house built but did not
live in it very long. This house, inspired by French
architecture, was built in 1756. Since then, there
have been several owners, including the ironmaster
of the Forges du Saint-Maurice, Pierre-Olivier
de Vézin. In 1961, it was designated as a historic
monument. Private residence.
MÉDART CHOUART
DES GROSEILLIERS
43
>> 863 rue des Ursulines
On the site of this house resided, in the 17th century,
Médart Chouart Des Groseilliers, fur trader,
explorer, and one of the discoverers of Lake
Superior (1652-1664) and Hudson's Bay
(1682-1684). Along with Pierre-Esprit Radisson, he
founded the powerful Hudson’s Bay Company,
the oldest trading company in the country.
MANOIR DE
TONNANCOUR
44
>> 864 rue des Ursulines
Who was René Godefroy de Tonnancour? A Crown
prosecutor, civil and criminal lieutenant-general
of Trois-Rivières, and owner of the Tonnancour
seigneurie in the Pointe-du-Lac district. This
imposing manor designated as a historic monument
in 1966 is hard to miss! Originally built in 1723, the
manoir de Tonnancour was seriously damaged in
1784 during a fire, and Judge Deschenaux began its
reconstruction in 1795. The building then became
a barracks for military officers, a presbytery and
bishop's palace, a religious house, and a school.
The manor, listed as a historic building in 1966,
is now occupied by the Galerie d’art du parc, a
contemporary art exhibition centre.
PLACE D’ARMES
46
>> Corner of des Ursulines
and des Casernes streets
At the entrance of Old Trois-Rivières, in the parc
des Gouverneurs, a plaque pays tribute to Pierre
Boucher. Appointed militia captain in 1651, he
distinguished himself during a major Iroquois attack
in 1653. He served as governor of Trois-Rivières
from 1654 to 1667 and was the first Canadian
ennobled by Louis XIV in 1661.

47
48
>> 168 rue Bonaventure
manoirdeniverville.ca
Erected in 1668 and expanded in 1729, the manor is
the oldest building in the city. The manor is named
after Joseph-Claude Boucher de Niverville, an officer,
seigneur, superintendent, and recipient of the SaintLouis Cross. He inherited the manor when his fatherin-law died in 1761. It was designated as a historic
monument in 1960 and restored in 1972. Take a break
in the garden where the statue of Maurice Le Noblet
Duplessis, Premier of Quebec from 1936 to 1939 and
from 1944 to 1959, was erected.
CHAMPLAIN PARK
49
>> Corner of Bonaventure, Hart, and Royale streets
The Hart family owned the land where Champlain
Park is currently located and sold it to the city in
1869. Between 1882 and 1967, there was a booth
where bands played, and Radisson Street used to
cross the park. There is also an artistic bench to
honour the memory of the artist Godro. The Town
Hall, the Maison de la culture, the library, and the
Salle J-Antonio-Thompson are also located there.
45
>> des Ursulines Street
In the colony's infancy, this park was conceded to
Algonquin Chief Charles Pachiriny and was used
for the fur trade and evangelization by the Jesuits.
As of 1751, military exercises were held, hence the
name Place d'Armes. The Russian-made cannon
dating back to 1828 was in all likelihood brought
back by the Trifluvian soldiers who served under
the British flag during the Crimean War.
PARC DES GOUVERNEURS
PLACE PIERRE-BOUCHER
>> des Casernes Street
Three monuments were erected at the entrance
of the historic district: In the centre, an obelisk,
the Flambeau, has represented the legacy of
Trifluvian youth since 1934. On the right stand the
Sacré-Cœur and the vestiges of the first parish
church of 1710 and of the cemetery. On the left,
the monument des Braves was dedicated to the
soldiers who died during the two world wars of
the 20 th century. A fountain and water jets are
surrounded by reminders of the foundations of
the first parish church of 1710, of the cemetery
associated with it, and of the palisade.
> CHEMIN DU ROY
The first drivable road
in North America was built
between 1731 and 1737. Linking
Quebec City, Trois-Rivières,
and Montreal, it ran along the
St. Lawrence River and allowed
travellers to cover the distance in
two days at a gallop! Therefore,
Trois-Rivières was a place to stop
for the night, half way.

CENTRE D’ART DES RÉCOLLETS ST.JAMES
THE PLATON 61
>> (CcFd-18)
One of the sites where the city was founded, du
Platon has a rich history. However, most of the
remains of its occupation perished during its
construction between 1850 and 1918. In 2011,
archeological digs carried out to the south-west
of the Flambeau revealed a pit dating back to the
French regime containing several fragments of
household items, as well as 18th century artifacts
related to food.
TERRASSE TURCOTTE 62
>> (CcFd-21)
Terrasse Turcotte has been coveted since the
period of New France. In fact, the first palisade
constructed around 1650 partially covered this
area. The archeological digs of 1983 and 2008
uncovered remains of the 19 th and 20 th centuries,
such as an old train track and a supporting wall
of the dock, but not traces of the first palisade.
The slope of the terrace was also used as a vast
open dump for much of the 19 th century, providing
archeologists with many artifacts.
LA VÉRENDRYE PARK 64
>> (CcFd-28)
From 2013 to 2016, an archeological site took
shape in the lower yard of the Ursulines Monastery.
Remains of a laundry room built in 1701 were
uncovered, as was the base of a special building: the
loges des insensés. In fact, the Ursulines of TroisRivières were responsible for treating the insane
until 1845. Digs were also conducted while the
infrastructure of the monastery's main building was
being repaired. They uncovered remains from the
19 th century, notably the latrines and the foundations
of the kitchen, and interventions were made to save
the archeological data disturbed during the repairs.

URSULINES MONASTERY 65
>> (CcFd-31)
During its renovation in 2014, the Centre d’art
des Récollets St.James was the site of preventive
archeological digs with the aim of minimizing the
impact of the work on the remains and artifacts. The
digs revealed two types of foundations, those of the
first chapel, built at the beginning of the 18th century,
and those of an unknown building.
PLACE D’ARMES 66
>> (CcFd-19)
From the first surveys conducted in 1983, the
researchers received confirmation that the Place
d'Armes site had strong archeological potential. In
fact, indigenous people resided sporadically on the
site, and the first European settlers lived there. From
2006 to 2008, digs revealed rubble dating back to
the French regime. It was from the foundations of
the residence of Jacques Aubuchon (1617-1701),
master carpenter, and Barthélémy Bertaut (1623-?),
master arquebusier. In both cases, the remains
of their 17th century houses were uncovered, as
well as several everyday objects. Artifacts left by
indigenous people during the period of first contact,
prehistory, were also uncovered.
63
>> (CcFd-20)
La Vérendrye Park was named in honour of the
Trifluvian Pierre Gauthier de Varennes, Sieur of La
Vérendrye, discoverer of the Canadian West. This
is where the family residence, which belonged to
his father, René Gauthier de Varennes, governor of
Trois-Rivières, was located. The archeological digs
from 2009 to 2011 revealed the masonry of certain
walls of the Varennes house.

MANOIR DE TONNANCOUR AND PARISH
67
>> (CcFd-15)
Before the Manoir de Tonnancour was built,
René Godefroy (1669-1738) built a house on the
current Parc des Gouverneurs site. Digs conducted
in 1977 revealed the foundations of the Godefroy
family's first residence, which was built before
1704. In addition, the manoir de Tonnancour site,
which also includes the parish, was explored in
2011 before Place Pierre-Boucher was rebuilt. This
work revealed remains of the first parish church of
1710 and of its cemetery, as the commemorative
markings on the ground evoke, which we can see
on Place Pierre-Boucher.
PLACE PIERRE-BOUCHER 66
FORGES-DU-SAINTMAURICE NATIONAL
HISTORIC SITE
68
>> (CcFd-12)
First iron industry of Canada, the Forges
du Saint-Maurice site has enormous
archeological potential. This is why
the largest archeological site in the
country was set up on this land between
1973 and 1976. While the buildings
of the old industrial village had been
destroyed or displaced over the years,
the ground contained several remnants
of the French regime and the beginning
of English settlement. Masonry
foundations, boiler rooms, whips, and
several other artifacts comprise this vast
archeological collection.
>> (CcFd-18)
In 2011, while Place Pierre-Boucher was being
rebuilt, a large archeological site occupied the
entrance to the Trois-Rivières heritage site.
Though previous analyses had led us to believe
that the ground had been disturbed, the strong
historical potential of the site required us to
intervene. As expected, the layers dating back to
the French regime had been largely eradicated in
the 19 th century.
MANOIR BOUCHER DE NIVERVILLE 70
69
>> (CcFd-14)
The Manoir Boucher de Niverville was the site of
archeological digs in 1971 during its restoration. In
addition to uncovering several original Euro-Quebec
artifacts, the digs allowed for the dating of the
transformations the building underwent throughout
its history. These foundations from 1668 officially
make the manor the oldest house in Trois-Rivières.
