EQUAL JUSTICE UPDATE iowalegalaidfoundation.org • Spring/Summer 2012 Nicholas T. (Nick) Drees Inducted into Iowa Legal Aid Hall of Fame Frank Deford Entertains the Crowd Nicholas T. (Nick) Drees was inducted into Iowa Legal Aid’s Hall of Fame during the annual event, Equal Justice After Hours, held on Wednesday, May 2, at the Temple for Performing Arts in Des Moines. Nick Drees was inducted into the Iowa Legal Aid Hall of Fame at the 2012 Equal Justice After Hours Generous supporters of equal Justice after Hours include: Quotes from Clients Served by Iowa Legal Aid “My husband was abusive for years. My self-esteem, the core of who I was, was destroyed. Now, I have confidence again. I would not have been able to reach this point in my life without Iowa Legal Aid.” Equal Justice After Hours is the Iowa Legal Aid Foundation’s annual fundraising event to raise funds for Iowa Legal Aid. It is a celebration of the hope and dignity restored to lowincome Iowans through the efforts of the organization and its supporters. Nick dedicated his career to criminal defense work. He believed very deeply that the American system of justice was best served by providing vigorous legal advocacy for the less fortunate. He believed that each person deserved to be treated fairly and with dignity and respect. His life’s work reflected his compassion and commitment to equal justice for all. He was a respected and beloved member of the state and federal legal community. In accepting the award on behalf of Nick’s family, Jim Whalen, current Federal Public Defender remarked, “It is probably impossible to quantify the positive impact Nick had on providing protection to the rights of poor people confronted by the federal government. For 12 years he directed an organization with four offices throughout the state, over 30 employees, including 13 attorneys providing representation for over 10,000 indigent Iowans. But he also had an impact nationally through service on federal defender committees, advocating for greater resources, better advocacy for indigent defendants, and for fairer laws and guidelines. Nick, who was only 49, already had an impressive record of public service to the poor, to the law and to his community. We will never know what more he could have achieved.” Nick is the 17th person inducted into the Hall of Fame, which also includes Governor Robert D. Ray, Congressman Neal Smith, Senator Tom Harkin, Attorney General Tom Miller, Roxanne Conlin and Bonnie Campbell. The featured speaker was Frank Deford, whose talk entitled “Sports: The Hype and The Hypocrisy” took humorous swipes at golfers, college football fans and athletes. He also offered excerpts from his newly released autobiography, “Over Time – My Life as a Sports Writer.” Diane Crookham-Johnson presided as Master of Ceremonies. She is an attorney with the Crookham-Johnson Law Office in Oskaloosa and former Vice-President of Administration with Musco Lighting, also based in Oskaloosa. Diane has served as the President of the Iowa Legal Aid Foundation and continues to serve the Foundation as a member of the Board of Directors. In the morning twenty-two players teed it up on a bright spring day for each school in “Ryder Cup” style match play. Drake, behind Captain Chief Justice Mark Cady, staked an early lead of 28-16 following the morning singles. In the afternoon two person matches, Iowa battled back, claiming 23 of the 44 points, but Drake held the lead with an overall margin of 49 to 39. Ten points hung in the balance in the best shot (scramble) portion. If the Hawks won all of the best shot points the match would be tied. Wakonda Club professionals analyzed the scorecards for the tiebreakers. Iowa claimed first, second and fourth places for seven points, while the Dogs snagged 3rd and 5th for three points, securing the win. The final tally was Drake 52, Iowa 46. Iowa Captain Judge Eliza Ovrom promised to bring a determined group to Finkbine in Iowa City for the 2013 match. Adding to the fun were several opportunities for participants to demonstrate their abilities, including attempts for cash prizes on each of the par three holes, and a Fifty Thousand dollar shootout over the lunch hour. Although no one claimed the grand prizes, there were a few close calls. Following golf, prizes for various skillful shots (long drive, long putt, closest to the pin) were awarded while others bid on silent auction prizes. A complete listing of the matches and winning best shot scores appears at http:// iowalegalaidfoundation.org/wp-content/ uploads/2011/07/2012-Results1.pdf Dennis Groenenboom, Executive Director of Iowa Legal Aid, expressed his appreciation for the event and all it means to Iowa Legal Aid and the clients it serves. The donation was just over $10,000. This will help Iowa Legal Aid continue to provide extraordinary service to Iowans despite budget reductions in recent years. With 12 fewer lawyers at the end of 2011 than in January 2010, Iowa Legal Aid still closed over 22,000 cases in 2011 assisting over 53,000 Iowans. Thanks to all who sponsored, participated or volunteered at the event.
