Sir William H. Davidson, KGCHS I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Winter weather there is cold and wet. Often times at the beginning of Spring there is still snow on the ground. Unfailingly, every year as a predictable ritual of Nature, the crocuses are the first to announce the advent of Spring as they poke their heads through the snow. Usually they appear in colorful clusters at the base of trees and if there is snow still blanketing the ground they present as striking reminders that the Spring in all its wonderful abundance of new life will follow. And, sure enough, the daffodils soon follow, delicate new light green leaves appear on the dormant tree branches and the birds, crazy with their excitement, announce the beginning of yet another yearly cycle. You can’t help but feel the wonder and awe that this gift of Spring brings each year. It is the promise of Hope for something better to come, life renewed and optimism of something better yet to come. Easter is our spiritual Spring. Christ is risen and we have a new lease on life, a Grace freely given in the Pascal sacrifice and Hope eternally confirmed by His Resurrection. Imperfect as we are, we are re-energized by this annual cycle of new birth, maturation, a spiritual autumn and the darkness of Winter. In this issue, we present to you the Hope of new life which we bring through our material treasure shared with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Each year the Lieutenancy renews its commitment to support worthy projects of our choosing. I hope you share with me the wonder of how your generosity and stewardship renews and continues to bring forth a Springtime of Hope and optimism for the Christians we support. May the Grace of God fill your lives this Spring and throughout the year. Volume 22, Number 2 WESTERN LIEUTENANCY COUNCIL Lieutenant H.E. Sir William H. Davidson, KGCHS Grand Prior H. E. Nedder, LCHS NEWS Page 3 Volume 22, Number 2 FROM THE GRAND PRIOR H.E. Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, KGCHS During the week of April 16—21 the Bishops of the Provinces of San Francisco and Los Angeles were in Rome for our Ad Limina visit. Every five years each Bishop is required to travel to Rome and to visit the tombs of St. Peter and St. Paul, meet with Pope Benedict XVI, and visit most of the major offices of the Holy See. The name Ad Limina is translated, “A visit to the thresholds of Saints Peter and Paul.” There are 30 Bishops from our Region XI participating in this Ad Limina visit. It is not only a great opportunity to pray at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul, but to have time together to reflect upon our ministry to all of our wonderful people across the Region. As Bishops we seldom have this opportunity to share pastoral experiences and challenges, and we find it very helpful. Prior to our visit, each Arch/Diocese must send to the Holy See a five-year report, called the Quinquennial Report. Our reports were for the years 2006 to 2010. The various offices of the Holy See review the Report and make comment when we visit their office. It is always a very useful process for us and for them. The spiritual highlight is the celebration of Mass in the four great Basilicas: St. Peter’s, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, and St. John Lateran. These celebrations of the Eucharist truly place us at the fount of all graces flowing through the Church. The personal highlight is our meeting with Pope Benedict XVI which occurred during the final days of our visit in Rome. The Pope met with the Bishops of the Los Angeles Province on one day, and the Bishops of the San Francisco Province the following day. Our Holy Father was most welcoming and cordial. He permitted us to bring any priests or seminarians we had with us in Rome from our respective Dioceses. Photographs were taken, and then they departed. The format for our gathering was structured but informal. The Pope gave us his Easter greetings and extended to us his best wishes in and through our Risen Lord. There were fifteen Bishops in our group, and through prior discussion, each of us had chosen a topic in which we could share the realities of pastoral life in our Local Churches. Topics ranged from our Catholic schools, to efforts at increasing priestly and religious vocations, to the ethnic diversity of our parishes, and the like. My topic was the phenomenon of world-wide migration and the presence of millions of immigrants in our country, and the plight of those without legal residency status. The Pope was surprised to learn that some 212 million people are on the move throughout the world—he was not aware that the numbers were so large. I told him that the last Papal document on migrants and immigrants was 60 years ago with the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII entitled Exsul Family [August 1, 1952]. The title comes from the introduction pointing out how the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph had to flee to Egypt to escape the attempt by Herod to kill the infant Jesus. The Holy Father asked me if I had a proposal to make, and fortunately, I had prepared a letter to him with this precise request. That was given to his secretary and I shall follow up with further recommendations. We also had the opportunity to visit with our Grand Master, Cardinal Edwin O’Brien. For me this was my seventh Ad Limina Visit—having been a Bishop for some 37 years now. Whether this may have been my final Ad Limina will depend upon my health and energy five years from now! May the courageous witness of Saints Peter and Paul be a source of grace and strength for all of us as we return to serve you, the wonderful People of God! NEWS Page 4 Volume 22, Number 2 ADOPT-A-SEMINARIAN The initiative between Western Lieutenancy members Lady Sally and Sir William Green and the Latin Patriarchate was eagerly embraced by Auxiliary Bishop William Shomali, the former rector of the Seminary, who formally established the seminarian program. The seminary generally houses 50 students in the minor seminary between the ages of 13 and 18 and nearly 30 major seminarians. Beit Jala Seminary is staffed by Father Adib Zoomot, the rector, and four diocesan priests. BEIT JALA LATIN SEMINARY The first Patriarch after the restoration, H.B. Giuseppe Valerga, founded the Latin Patriarchal Seminary in 1852 in Jerusalem. On December 7th, 1857, he was transferred to Beit Jala, where it has been located since 1936. The seminary has formed 260 priests, 12 have become bishops and 3 have been appointed patriarchs. “At the Seminary, our mission is to give students – future priests – a chance to get not only a solid intellectual training but also to receive a human, spiritual and pastoral teaching within the context of the unique situation of the Church of Jerusalem….” Beit Jala Seminary, Palestine We as Knights and Ladies are so blessed to be living here in the USA. The Lieutenancy decided to incorporate the Order’s Mission into a tangible plan through the active support of developing new priests to strengthen the Church’s presence and the propagation of the Faith in the Holy Land. What better way is there to promote peace in the Holy Land than by helping these young men toward ordination. You too can support these young people of faith by supporting the Adopt-A Seminarian Program at Beit Jala Seminary in Palestine. The Adopt-A-Seminarian Project was approved for individual sponsorship by the Lieutenant in June 2005 and, as Msgr. Sir Kevin Kostelnik stated, “whenever we can put a face to a project, such as a seminarian, we are sponsoring a worthwhile project!” Sir Bill Green , Father Issa Hijazine, and Bishop William Shomali at Fr. Issa’s Ordination.. Also attending were Lady Sally Green and their son, Sean. The entire annual cost for tuition, room and board is only $5,000 per student, making it a wonderful project for the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre to consider for individual sponsorship. Those who have the resources to support financially, spiritually and establish regular communication or a visit to the seminary to meet the young man will find this experience truly rewarding. In June 2009, 26-year old Issa Hijazine became our first sponsored seminarian to be ordained. Currently two other seminarians, Baha Stefan and Fares Siryani, are being supported by individual members of the Los Angeles and San Diego Areas of the Lieutenancy. Other Lieutenancies are also stepping up to support the Adopt-A-Seminarian Project. The Lieutenancy has not invested discretionary funds in the Adopt-a-Seminarian Program believing that individual members will be attracted to this worthy cause. - Article by Sir Bill Green, NEWS Page 5 Volume 22, Number 2 SOCIETY OF ST. YVES The Society of St. Yves has been providing legal assistance and representing the needy, oppressed and marginalized of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories from military tribunals to the high court for over 20 years. Founded by the former Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, St. Yves has been under the patronage of the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem since 1991. The Society offers support to everybody, who cannot afford a lawyer. One important policy of St. Yves is its “OpenDoor-Policy”: people of all religions, nationalities, colors or race are helped. The major interventions of the Society of St. Yves are legal cases in Jerusalem and the southern West Bank. The topics include issues related to identity documents (Jerusalem residency cases), refused social benefits (National Insurance Institute cases), family reunification procedures (family unification) and the registration of children. Additionally, St. Yves handles mainly cases related to land confiscation, demolition orders and freedom of movement/permits in the West Bank. Another issue is visas for the clergy. Family Reunification—If a young person from Jerusalem goes to Bethlehem University and marries a fellow student from Bethlehem, they are not permitted to live in Jerusalem. There are a number of cases like this where the spouse lives and works in Jerusalem and the other is living there illegally and could be arrested and deported to the West Bank at any time (these young married families we know have small children, so if the spouse is arrested it is a major problem for the family). Individual Displacement and Deportation – Sir Chuck Radloff tells of a personal experience he had – “I was helping out at St. Yves the day a woman arrived seeking assistance, and as others there were occupied, I met with her and she told me her story – She is an elderly lady who has worked for 50 years in Jerusalem with a religious organization. She was born in Syria and moved to Jerusalem 50 years ago, accordingly she must obtain permission each year from Israeli officials to remain in Jerusalem, which has been the pattern for 50 years! Last year, when she made application to remain it was denied and she was given 30 days to return to Syria, she was no longer allowed to remain in Jerusalem. Although the primary thrust is Legal Advocacy before the courts it also provides community information and awareness lectures with the aim of empowering the local community to know its rights. St. Yves can accompany its clients through all instances of the courts. As soon as similar issues arise in individual cases, then, the Society undertakes class actions to help to improve the lives of as many people as possible. Today, St. Yves is handling about 700 cases per year helping about 2,000 people in cases where the opening of a case is not needed (e.g. affidavits, certifications, submission of applications, informal objections). Furthermore, the Society visits communities, schools and universities to inform the people about their rights and legal possibilities. Examples of the conditions faced today: Home Demolition Cases - Typically there are 4,000 demolition notices outstanding issued to Palestinians families by the Israeli government and at any given time Israeli soldiers, police and bulldozers arrive on the scene and demolish the home. Land Confiscation - Many, many acres of private Palestine land is confiscated by Israel for Israeli home construction or security reasons. She then met with Adv. Raffoul Rofa, Director of the Society and another advocate. Outcome: St.Yves intervened and her deportation was rescheduled for later hearing, which normally can take a long time, so for the present moment she is OK. Sir Peter Callahan wrote after his visit – “I thought that the meeting with St. Yves lawyers was EXCELLENT, very informative and very interesting. The …lawyers were very understanding, polite, and articulate, and answered a lot of questions very fully…politely, and with enthusiasm… Most of our group felt exactly as I did, we wound up staying an hour over the scheduled time…” There is additional need for funds to benefit the St. Yves Society to help carry out its mission. NEWS Page 6 Volume 22, Number 2 SAINT VINCENT AIN KAREM A HOME FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS “On a hilltop in the Ain Karem section of Jerusalem, there is a hidden kingdom of grace, kindness and mercy” – Saint Vincent’s Ain Karem, (Haaretz). Saint Vincent’s is home for severely and permanently afflicted children from the Jerusalem area, a home totally committed to providing love, affection and care for the children. Their Vision? - “We believe in the basic and intrinsic value of every person and that every child and adult has the right to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of his or her abilities or disabilities. St. Vincent Ain Karem accepts children and hires employees without regard to race, religion, creed or national origin.” They work in coordination with the Israeli Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare and are overseen by the Handicapped Services Division. It was founded in 1964, as a non-profit institution under the ownership and management of the Daughters of Charity. Sister Susan Sheehan, Sisters of Charity, was a presenter at the Western Lieutenancy Annual Conference, Salt Lake City, 2004 Some of the children are bedridden and require being turned over in their beds to prevent bedsores. Most of the children need constant supervision to insure they do not choke or fall. The Sisters of Charity rely heavily upon volunteers to assist in caring for children, and serve as nurses, physiotherapists and as care givers. The usual duration of volunteers is six months to a year – many are from Europe, as well as the USA. Sixty children call St. Vincent Ain Karem their home; all are severely mentally or physically handicapped. Thirteen at present eat with gastro tubes and four others eat with nasal or kangaroo feeding devices. Four children can walk with assistance, and over half of the children have vision impairment. Some of the children can speak a few words, and over half of the children have convulsive disorders. Special diets are prepared for eighteen of the children and nursing care is provide 24 hours a day by the Sisters of Charity and volunteers. Some of the children wear “corsets” specially designed braces worn around their body to provide bone and muscle support. A rare glimpse inside St. Vincent’s is both saddening and uplifting. Children groan and shout, making unintelligible sounds, their heads slump, their legs are strapped to crutches, their bodies encased in special corsets. A volunteer attending to a child and children during a visit from the Western Lieutenancy including a bedridden child in crib. Saint Vincent Ain Karem needs assistance in the form of prayers and financial contributions to cover the evermounting costs of food, medicines, medical equipment, energy and facility maintenance, and to insure the children always have a home. This year the Lieutenancy invested $2,000 in Sister’s special work but they are in need of additional funds for orthopedic devices, furniture and safety renovations. NEWS Page 7 Volume 22, Number 2 STELLA MARIS CHURCH There are 750 Catholics in Aqaba; which comprises 25% of the Christian population in Aqaba, and the number of Catholics continues to grow. Currently, Holy Mass is celebrated once a week in temporary facilities as illustrated above. Stella-Maris (Star of the Sea) Church and Multi-Purpose Hall Construction According to the Latin Patriarch – “The main goal for building a church in Aqaba is to contribute to the spiritual formation of the Christian community in the area and to support it in the living word of God. To achieve this goal, the Church will work on a number of objectives including the promotion of evangelization, the provision of Catholic education, encouragement and sustainability of Lay pastoral ministries and youth ministries, provision of social assistance and the promotion of catechism. Two years ago Patriarch Twal transferred Father Zoomot, pastor of Zarqa-North, one of the largest Latin Patriarchate schools and parishes to a small congregation in Aqaba, Jordan and now, two years later, Father Zoomat and the Latin Patriarchate are preparing to build a church and parish hall, Stella Maris- Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Father Zoomat is a good friend of the Western USA Lieutenancy. While he was pastor at Zarqa-North the Lieutenancy provided funds for a computer center, a science laboratory and audio-visual equipment for Zarqa North school & parish. Aqaba is a rapidly growing area of Jordan primarily due to significant investments being made in the commercial, industrial and tourism industries in the region. Patriarch Twal Holy Mass in Aqaba Father Zoomot The economic growth in Aqaba has created a large labor market and a flood of people from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Palestine, and other areas in the Middle East who are migrating to Aqaba. Many of the people migrating are Christians, and the mission of the Latin Patriarchate is to provide for the spiritual needs of Catholics by providing a place for worship and spiritual formation. Article by Sir Chuck Radloff …Unavailability of a Latin Church in the city (means the inability) to follow-up on the needs of its parish members, poverty and rising social problems. (the new facilities bring) Solutions…include spiritual nurture and formation of the Christian community in Aqaba, provision of sufficient care and follow-up by clergy. Additionally, the Church will provide Catholic education to help with the spiritual formation and development of the Christian community.” Patriarch Twal has demonstrated foresight by the assignment of Father Zoomot to this high growth Christian community, and to provide assistance in the formulation of plans for a church and parish hall to nourish the spirituality of the growing Catholic population. In response to a ROACO appeal, the Western Lieutenancy invested $20,000 this year towards the construction of the church and parish hall. Funding from many sources will be needed to complete this major project. NEWS Page 8 Volume 22, Number 2 BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY Bethlehem University Students with Special Needs Program Bethlehem University is the only Catholic University in Palestine and Israel, and is staffed by De La Salle Christian Brothers under the direction of Brother Peter Bray, FSC, Ed.D, Vice-Chancellor. The Western Lieutenancy has a long and favorable history of providing financial, spiritual and moral support for the university in the form of scholarships, assistance in construction of a new Nursing school, Summer Internship Program and the Students with Special Needs Program. The mission of Bethlehem University is based upon employing the principles of the Lasallian tradition of education and in doing so provides quality higher education to the people of Palestine. Consistent with the mission of the university, students with disabilities have access to programs and facilities of the university and assurance of assistance with their educational ambitions through the Students with Special Needs Program. The program is designed to assist students with disabilities to enjoy the benefits of higher education and has been supported by the Western Lieutenancy since 2009. Graduates find a variety of employment, for example: One graduate is employed as an accountant in an adjoining community, A wheelchair bound graduate oversees a physical education center in Ramallah A number of graduates are employed at the Bethlehem Arab Rehabilitation Hospital. Recently two visually disabled graduates were employed; one by the government and the other by a society organized to assist disabled women. Another graduate is teaching in a school for the blind, and at the same time studying for his master’s degree. Funds provided by the Lieutenancy are used to employ a secretary and an occupational therapist. The role of the occupational therapist is to train students on the use of a wide array of special equipment including Braille embossing machines, audio taping of text books, TV monitors with zoom magnification, a Braille transcriber, Braille typewriter, and computers with “JAW” software (which enables students to access voice enabled word processing), e-mail and access to the Internet for research purposes. JAW software converts written text into audio sounds and the student with visual impairment “hears” the text shown on the computer monitor…amazing! For the visually impaired the secretary translates English and Arabic text into Braille; photocopying, scanning and reformatting text for electronic transmission by JAWS software equipped computer. Occupational Therapist assisting students (left) The new expanded Resource Room (right) Students in the Special Needs Program are the ones that touch the heart, and the soul of the Western Lieutenancy; providing these students the means to avail themselves of higher education through the university is in full concert with the mission of the Order to provide support for the Holy Land. Hopefully, the Lieutenancy will be able to continue to provide financial, moral and spiritual support for these deserving young students. Br. Jack Curran, VP Development and Mary Sabella (Student Councillor) with staff and students. The program provides university graduates with disabilities a “bridge” to enjoy the benefits of gainful employment, and the opportunity of being a contributing member of the community in which they reside. This year the Western Lieutenancy gave $10,000 to Bethlehem University to support occupational therapy for special needs students. Scholarship opportunities are available for individual giving. - Submitted by Sir Chuck & Lady Ede Radloff NEWS Page 9 Volume 22, Number 2 BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY GERNERT, ZUBERANO AND ALMA CELLA’S ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP Dear Cardinal Edwin F. Lent, Nominations, Orientation, First Monday Rosary, Mid-Year Meeting, Reflection, the first quarter of the New Year always brings much activity to our Archdiocese. In addition to our regular monthly gatherings, our March Rosary was held at Mater Dolorosa Retreat House in the beautiful foothills of Sierra Madre. As before, we walked the outdoor Stations of the Cross followed by praying the Rosary and a simple Lenten Dinner. Special thanks to Lady Emma Stewart for organizing this evening and to Lady Erna Stebbins for providing us with these beautiful pictures of the stations. Each month, our members in the South Bay, San Gabriel Valley, and Pomona areas all gather to pray. If you would like more information please contact our Rosary Coordinator, Lady Emma Stewart at [email protected]. After processing into the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels, our Mid Year Mass was celebrated by Most Rev. Sir Jose Gomez. We were very blessed to have not only our Archbishop, but also our Grand Prior, Cardinal Mahony present that evening. At the meeting that followed, our Lieutenant, H.E. Sir William Davidson presented us with a state of the Order message and telling of the latest events that have been happening in the Holy Land and here with our members. with an award winning presentation on the Christian sites in the Holy Land. We have a group of wonderful nominees who are looking forward to their Investiture. Please pray for them during this time as we approach the Annual Meeting in Palm Desert. As a special reminder, if you have someone in mind for nomination, please let us know. We ask too that you pray for our fellow Knights and Ladies who have recently passed away. Please keep Sir Joseph Brown, Lady Grace Rinaldi, and Lady Dusty Haff and their families in your prayers. We are saddened to hear of the passing of these long time members. One of the most difficult tasks is keeping track of everyone. If you change any pertinent information such as email or phone number, drop us a line! We pray that as we journey through the beauty of spring, that Mary our Mother bless you! Area Co-Councillors—Los Angeles Lady Margie Romano [email protected] Sir Thomas Romano [email protected] O range—As we entered the new year, the Diocese of Orange completed the acquisition of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, which is destined to become the new Cathedral of Orange. We also heard from Sir Scott Scherer about the upcoming pilgrimages. There is already much excitement over the pilgrimage to the Holy Land in October 2013 that Archbishop Gomez will be attending. Lady Rosa Cumare and Rt. Rev. Sir Alexei Smith gave a presentation about their plans for special event projects in the Archdiocese for the future. They are hard at work organizing outings that will be of interest to you. More to come! The meeting was closed (Continued on page 11) NEWS Page 11 Volume 22, Number 2 AREA NEWS (Continued from page 10) Most Rev. Sir Tod Brown noted that this will soon become a welcoming and spirit-filled place of Eucharistic worship, community and outreach. Recently, almost 200 EOHSJ members, candidates, and guests participated in our Orange Mid-Year event at this new Cathedral campus. Bishop Tod Brown officiated at the prayer service that preceded the dinner program; tours of the 40-acre property were provided before the event began. Orange Team(s) Update: The Orange area Justice and Peace team organized a four part workshop - “Living Stones of Faith” - led by Dr. Daniel Smith-Christopher. He is Professor of Theological Studies and Director of Peace Studies at Loyola Marymount University. Members of the Order – and other faithful – participated. The team is discerning how best to apply this new knowledge to benefit of our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. The Orange Area Spirituality Team submitted a white paper on “Plenary Indulgences” that our members might soon gain such indulgences through their persistent and fervent prayer for the preservation of the Faith in the Holy Land and for our suffering brethren in the Churches of the East. This devotional practice would be a modern approach to an ancient devotional practice of the Church which is uniquely tied to the origins of the EOHSJ itself. Members of the Order – and all who pray them could gain numerous spiritual benefits by the undertaking of these devotional practices. The above initiatives are being coordinated with Lieutenant Davidson and his team. We have fourteen candidates for investiture; please pray for their continued discernment. Lady Kathleen McGaughan was one of four Orange County women honored as “Mother of the Year” by Casa Teresa, which provides a transformational, comprehensive program for homeless, pregnant women 18 years of age and older. The gala celebration was held at the Irvine Hyatt hotel. On August 4, 2012, Rev. Sir John Janze will be hosting a Morning of Recollection for members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Order of Malta, and for all of the faithful. Bishop Brown will be the presiding Celebrant and homilist for the Mass, which follows two inspirational talks. Please attend if your schedule allows; location is St. Thomas More Parish in Irvine. On Thursday, June 14, 2012, a second-in-a-series of “Living Stones” workshops will be led by Rev. Sir Rick Van De Water, who was ordained in Jerusalem in 1982 and lived in the Holy Land before and after the Security / Separation Wall. Fr. Rick has a doctorate in biblical theology; has taught at a number of schools in the Holy Land; and has many additional qualifications. Sir William Davidson who provided an insightful and inspiring talk during the business portion of the mid-year meeting. Sir William (Continued on page 13) NEWS Page 13 Volume 22, Number 2 AREA NEWS (Continued from page 12) Davidson, guided each of the Order's members in attendance on his journeys to both Philadelphia to celebrate the life of Cardinal Foley and later to Rome for the consistory at which our Grand Master H. E. Most Rev. Sir Edwin O’Brien was elevated to Cardinal. Turning to business matters of the Western Lieutenancy, the Knights and Ladies listened with interest as we were informed of the "Lost Sheep" program and were encouraged to reach out to members of the Order. Our keynote speaker for the day was Father Tom Hall, C.S.P. who provided an informative and inspirational discussion on the significance and repetitive nature of the number "three". Father Hall reminded us of numerous examples including, but not limited to three pilgrimage sites (Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela), three gifts of the Magi and the three times Peter denied Jesus; it provided a wonderful foundation for our Lenten reflections. We look forward to hosting all of the Knights and Ladies of the Western Lieutenancy at the upcoming Annual Meeting which will be held October 5 - 8 at Indian Wells. Area Co-Councillors—San Bernardino Sir Charles Riddle [email protected] Lady DoeLeen Rover [email protected] S an Diego—On April 5, 2012, Father Nabil from the Maronite Catholic Eastern Rite Church hosted a Solemn Mass of the Lord's Supper at St. Ephrem's Mission located in El Cajon, California. Father Nabil asked the for Knights to participate in the washing of the feet ceremony on Holy Thursday, and Sir Carlos (pictured left with Fr. Nabil) and Lady Patti Cuellar were our representatives. Sir Carlos reports that Father had some very eloquent words to say about the Order and how so many Christians are grateful for our support of the Holy Land. Father Nabil is from Lebanon, and his perspective is one from the Middle East where he has seen the actual results of the Order’s good works. “All the Knights were seated on the altar for the entire ceremony. Fr. Nabil thoroughly washed our feet with a bar of soap and water. Afterwards he very gently, bowed and kissed each one of our feet just as our Lord did 2000 years ago with the Twelve Apostles. Father made us feel like an integral part of the Mass throughout the entire evening. We felt blessed to be at St. Ephrem's that evening, for it was indeed a very spiritual and inspiring celebration of the Lord's Supper,” reported Sir Carlos. We would like to extend a big thank you to Most Rev. Sir Cirilo Flores, our coadjutor bishop, for making the San Diego mid-year meeting on March 24 such a special event. It was a great opportunity for everyone to meet the new Bishop. Also at the meeting, we announced the formation of two committees to enhance the spirituality and local involvement of the Knights and Ladies. The Spirituality Committee will plan and manage our local events, while the Special Projects Committee will identify and help coordinate support of projects in the Holy Land. If anyone is interested in joining one of these committees, please contact us. We will continue in 2012 with our First Monday Rosary for peace in the Holy Land. The Rosary is held in front of the Blessed Sacrament at All Hallows Parish in La Jolla starting at 7:15PM, followed by a reception in the parish center. We highly encourage everyone to attend. There were almost 80 attendees. Among the guest were H.E. Sir William Davidson and ten of our eleven candidates for admission to the Order. The evening began with a Mass celebrated by Rev. Msgr. Sir Albert Schifano, Vicar General and Moderator of the clergy for the Diocese of Tucson. Concelebrating the mass were: Rev. Msgr. Sir Thomas Millane, Rev. Sir Dominico Pinti, Rev. Sir Mike Bucciarelli, Rev. Mario Ordonez, Rev. Sir Martin Martinez and Rev. Sir Robert Carroll. Deacon Sir Kenneth McNealy also was serving on the altar. Most Rev. Sir Gerald Kicanas was unable to join us this year as he was in Cuba for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. After the social gathering and dinner Sir Ernie Nedder introduced the Lieutenant who awarded Pilgrim Shells to Lady Carol and Sir Don Ewing, Sir Bryant Sayers, Sir Jerry Villano and Sir Jim and Lady Leesa Naughton. Sir Jim Naughton spoke about the Pilgrimage experience. The Lieutenant then awarded Silver Legacy Pins to: Lady Ginny Clements, Lady Ann Dickson and Sir Ernie and Lady Kathy Nedder. This was followed by a video on the Legacy Program and a presentation on the works of the Lieutenancy. Sir Ernie Nedder then gave an overview of the year. Lady Karen McEwen (pictured left) reported on the rosary sales and the yearly retreat. Lady Ann Dickson spoke about Peace and Justice and Lady Kathy Nedder spoke about the monthly Rosary. Forty Knights and Ladies attended the Chrism Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson. Most Rev. Sir Gerald F. Kicanas presided. This year the Mass was extra special as two new Monsignors were presented: Rev. Msgr. Sir Alfred Schifano and Rev. Msgr. Raul Trevizo. Interim Chancellor for the Diocese of Tucson, Sir Ernie Nedder, introduced the new Monsignors to the Bishop and the people of the Diocese of Tucson. There were over 1,000 attendees at the Chrism Mass. On Saturday February 25th, over forty Knight and Ladies attended the Diocese of Tucson EOHSJ Retreat. Most Reverend Sir Gerald F. Kicanas was the Retreat Master. Bishop Kicanas reminded us that Lent is a time to pray together, give together and learn together, Using the series on Catholicism by Rev. Robert Barron we explored three themes. 1. The Teachings of Jesus Christ. In this session we were helped to understand sacred scripture better. We were also shown how Faith must be embraced and made personal. Faith was seen as a relationship. 2. In session two, we explored Liturgy as the source and summit of our life of Christ. 3. In session three, we explored types of prayer. We were reminded that as Christians we must be a people of prayer. The day included much sharing, a fantastic meal and an opening Mass that included the Institution of Reader for a future Deacon of the Diocese of Tucson. Among the priests and deacons on the altar with Bishop Kicanas were Rev. Sir Joseph Lombardo, Rev. Sir Martin Martinez, Rev. Sir Michael Buccairelli and Deacon Sir Kenneth McNealy, all members of the EOHSJ. The day concluded with Vespers led by Rev. Sir Michael Buccairelli. By Lady Rita L. Deiss, LGCHS In 1999, Marie Antoinette (Nettie) Weber, was invited to join her cousin, Cardinal William Keeler, on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Rome. It was a moving and spiritual experience. Nettie was so happy that she had invited her daughter, Margot, and her son William Randolph (Randy) Weber. Margot’s husband, Tom Kyd of San Diego and Randy’s daughter, Stacey also joined the pilgrimage. They visited the Old City of Jerusalem, the Church of the Ascension and the Garden of Gethsemane. The walk along the Via Dolorosa and visits to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre proved especially moving. Their trip included stops in Bethlehem and Galilee with a visit to the Basilica of the Nativity. Renewal of Baptismal vows was a highlight of the trip to the River Jordan. There was an opportunity to renew marriage vows at Cana. The group visited and had lunch at Bethlehem University. The Left to Right: Sir Randy Weber, Lady Margot Kyd, tour ended in Rome with a general audience in St. Peter’s Square with Lady Marsha Stocker, Sir Tom Kyd, Lady Nettie Weber Pope John Paul II. This began the family’s interest in and dedication to the Holy Land. In 2004, Nettie’s son, William Randolph Weber, was invested in the Northern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and Nettie was invested the following year. Nettie’s daughter, Margot, and her husband Tom were invested into the Western Lieutenancy in 2004. In 2006, Margot’s twin sister, Marsha Weber Stocker, received special permission to be invested in the Western Lieutenancy so that her sister and brother-in-law could be present at her investiture in San Diego. Marsha was residing in the North Central Lieutenancy at the time of her investiture and served as Section Representative for the dioceses in Kentucky. She transferred to the Northern Lieutenancy when she and her husband returned to the St. Louis area. All of the family worked diligently to promote and support the cause of Order. In 2008, Margot Twin Co-Councillors and Tom Kyd answered the request of their Lieutenant, Sir Patrick Powers of the Western USA Lieutenancy (now Vice Governor General and a member of the Presidency of the Grand Magisterium) to serve as Area Co-Councillors for the Diocese of San Diego. In 2012, Lieutenant Donald Drake of the Northern Lieutenancy asked Marsha Stocker (Margot Kyd’s twin sister) and brother, Randy Weber to serve as Area Co-Councillors for Saint Louis, Missouri. The expression “the Lord works in mysterious ways” certainly seems appropriate here as we find a brother and his twin sisters all contributing to the Order in the role of Co-Councillors at the same time. Margot and Tom have just agreed to continue to serve for another four year term at the request of Lieutenant William Davidson. Cardinal Keeler with his family The Order is truly blessed with the Weber family! NEWS Page 17 Volume 22, Number 2 A SPECIAL PILGRIM SHELL AWARD By Sir Chuck Radloff In recognition for making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem are honored by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem by being awarded the coveted Pilgrim Shell. In a typical year the Latin Patriarchate awards between 700-900 Pilgrim Shells which are presented in an impressive award ceremony presided over by the Latin Patriarch, or the Auxiliary Bishop of Jerusalem and are held at the Latin Patriarchate complex in the Old City of Jerusalem. Last November the Western USA Lieutenancy sponsored a pilgrimage with Rev. Msgr. Sir Dennis Mikulanis serving as spiritual director, and Sir Scott Scherer of Catholic Travel as the tour director. One of the high points on the schedule was the Pilgrim Shell Award ceremony to be conducted by Bishop William Shomali, Auxiliary Bishop of Jerusalem. In the afternoon of November 14th Bishop Shomali presided over the Pilgrim Shell Award Ceremony at the Latin Patriarchate, and Pilgrim Shell recipients were overjoyed. Unfortunately, one of the pilgrims, Sir Tony Garczynski, was confined to a hospital bed at the Knights Palace and could not attend the ceremony. Msgr. Mikulanis discretely took Bishop Shomali aside and thoughtfully advised him of the situation and Tony’s disappointment in missing the Pilgrim Shell Award Ceremony. Bishop Shomali, known locally and affectionately as the “priest with the white heart”, responded immediately and rescheduled his planned events. After dinner that evening, Bishop Shomali, with an encased Pilgrim Shell in hand and accompanied by Msgr. Mikulanis and Lady Patty Garczynski, visited Tony at the Knights Palace and with proper pomp and ceremony awarded the Pilgrim Shell. Later Patty related that upon receipt of his Pilgrim Shell Tony lit up like a new LED. Bishop Shomali completed the ceremony by giving Tony his blessing, and lo and behold in the morning Tony was back on his feet ready to resume his pilgrimage, a Jerusalem blessing always works! Thank you Msgr. Mikulanis and Bishop Shomali for making provisions to accommodate Sir Tony during this special moment of his pilgrimage. Jamal Khader (center) pictured with CSUSB President Albert Karnig and other University officials. Sir Chuck and Lady Ede Radloff are pictured second and third from the right. Father Khader also spoke at two public events. On Wednesday April 11, 2012, he joined a team of experts that included Dr. Qustandi Shomali, who is a visiting Fulbright Scholar from Bethlehem University, CSUSB scholars and Rabbi Hillel Cohn to discuss the status of the Palestinians on the occasion of Palestine Awareness Week declared by the Muslim Student Association on campus. Fr. Khader explained the difficulties faced by Palestinians in the Occupied Territories pointing to continued settlement construction and a separation wall that are derailing any peace talks. On Thursday, April 12, Fr. Khader spoke to an audience of over 200 on Christians Under Israeli Occupation. Father Jamal emphasized the unity of Christians and Muslims in their struggle against a long term occupation that aims to deprive them of their national independence. He said: “We share the same culture, the same history, the same language and the same struggle for freedom. We have all lived under Israeli military occupation since 1967, and displaced from our country since 1948. The Arab Israeli war in 1948 is our Catastrophe; 730,000 Palestinians, including 80% of the Christian population, were forced to leave their native Palestine to become refugees.” He concluded his presentation with a commitment to justice arguing that “religion cannot favor or support any unjust political regime, but must rather promote justice, truth and human dignity.” Fr. Jamal teaches at the Latin Seminary in Beit Jala, the Emmaus Center in Beit Sahour, the Family Center in Bethlehem, and Mar Elias College in Ibillin. He also teaches Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution Strategies for the Master's in International Cooperation and Development (MICAD) Program at Bethlehem University.
