Bob Henneberry, Chairman of CASMI’s Education Foundation and Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that, in 2011, CASMI has awarded 15 undergraduate scholarships of $1,500 each to fifteen dependents of CASMI member company employees. This years’ scholarships bring the total cash awards issued to CASMI Scholars to $612,000 since the program’s inception in 1989! Scholarship America, a not-for-profit foundation, manages the program to assure impartiality. The organization receives and processes the applications, determines the awards, and informs the winners on behalf of CASMI. The Reese Post Graduate scholarship has been awarded since 2006 and is made possible by a grant from Rosemont Exposition Services. Two students are receiving awards for the fourth consecutive year in 2011 based on the quality of their applications. Lucyna Krol, whose father Kazimierz is employed at P.J. Spring Company, Inc., and Justyna Milewski, daughter of Janusz of Formco Metal Products Incorporated have both earned CASMI scholarships for four consecutive years of their studies. CASMI member company, Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation in Chicago, IL was the big winner with three applicants from their ranks winning scholarships in 2011. Applicants from CASMI member companies P.J. Spring Company, Inc. in West Chicago, IL and R & L Spring Company in Lake Geneva, WI each had two scholarships awarded to dependants of their employees. CASMI appreciates the support of many members of the Spring Industry. Their participation in CASMI’s Bi-annual SpringWorld® trade show helps fund the CASMI Scholarship Program. Our industry partners share in the pride of this important program though their participation in SpringWorld. CASMI has announced the that the 2012 edition of the biennial SpringWorld® Convention and Trade Show will be returning to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois on October 3 – 5, 2012. Early interest in SpringWorld® 2012 is high with past exhibitors and new companies reserving their floor space early. To date, over 60% of the available show floor has already been contracted or reserved. Potential exhibitors including companies overseas have been inquiring about exhibiting and a wide variety of new exhibitors is expected. Wire Forming Technology International 2010 Exhibitors in Action In case you missed it...a wrap-up of recent CASMI Member Events CASMI‘s 2012 Board of Directors officially installed at the February Dinner Dance Over 100 CASMI Members gathered on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove, Illinois to welcome our 2011/2012 Board of Directors and enjoy each other’s company at our annual Valentine Dinner Dance Gala. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous Hors d’Oeuvres buffet and plated dinner as well as the musical stylings of the Ralph Wilder Orchestra. CASMI’s 2011/2012 Board of Directors (from left to right): President Rick Ross, Secretary/Treasurer Tony Iuliano, Vice President JR Strok, Past President/Director Bob Henneberry, Past President/Show Chairman Joe Sirovatka and Director Jeff Burda CASMI’s new President, Rick Ross of Rockford Spring outlined the goals of the association during his tenure. Ross also introduced CASMI’s newest Directors, Jeff Burda of Master Spring & Wire Form and Joshua Kahn of Perfection Spring and Stamping who join Vice President - JR Strok of Mohawk Spring; Secretary/ Treasurer - Tony Iuliano of Rapid Wire Forms and Past President/Show Chairman - Joe Sirovatka of Bel-Air Manufacturing along with Past President/Director Bob Henneberry of Rockford Spring. The new board is hard at work on association business and will serve through the end of 2012. Health-Care Reform Made Understandable at March Member Meeting Kevin Cassidy, Regional Director of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois joined over 40 CASMI members at the March Member Meeting to discuss the Health-Care Reform Act implemented by the Obama administration. Cassidy’s presentation provided detailed information about the factors that impact health insurance premiums and the reasons behind the rapid rise in costs. Also discussed were the provisions of health care reform that are now in effect and their impact on businesses, tips for assuring compliance without going broke, and an estimated timeline for implementation of the plan’s remaining provisions. The presentation spurred lively debate about health-care reform and controlling costs and was very well received by those in attendance. Comments overheard indicated that Cassidy’s presentation had provided more information with more clarity than other similar past presentations. CASMI is hoping to invite Cassidy back for an update in 2012. 6 CASMI President, Rick Ross and Presenter Kevin Cassidy of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Midwestern Economic Report provided at April Meeting William A. Strauss, senior economist and economic advisor in the economic research department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, joined over 30 CASMI members at our April Member Meeting to provide us with an update on the economic outlook for U.S. Manufacturers. The 2011 CASMI Member/Supplier Spring Golf Tournament was a resounding success with 141 participants enjoying a friendly round of golf and delicious post-tournament dinner. For Your Security...CASMI is Now PCI Compliant The Chicago Association of Spring Manufacturers announces that it has completed the PCI Compliance evaluation process and is now certified by the PCI Security Standards Council. In order to become compliant and assure the safety of your information, CASMI established and documented policies and procedures for secure handling of sensitive information such as credit card numbers, etc. To assure that our member and registrant information is kept secure. CASMI member logins and passwords have been issued and will be mailed to CASMI’s Primary and Corresponding Members for arrival by June 30, 2011. The new login information is designed to work with CASMI’s new website and provide access to members only pages and pricing for online event registration. In addition, Primary members will be able to modify their company’s online profile which will be available on the CASMI website. Login information cards are being mailed so that members can have easy access to their information. Each member is urged to maintain his or her own information private as every individual will have different login credentials with different levels of website access based on these credentials. Jim Kobrinetz named Technical Director of SMI On May 9, 2011, the Spring Manufacturers Institute (SMI) announced the appointment of James Kobrinetz as the organization’s new technical director. Kobrinetz joins SMI from MSI Testing and Engineering in Melrose Park, IL, where he most recently was senior metallurgical engineer. Kobrinetz will be responsible for SMI’s Technical Help Services, which includes answering technical questions from members, overseeing SMI’s failure analysis service, conducting technical seminars and writing a regular column for Springs magazine. Jim Kobrintez, SMI The Passing of an old friend - John W. Cleaver, Gibbs Wire Long-time industry professional John W. Cleaver, flrmerly with Gibs Wire and Steel passed awa on May 4, 2011. Cleaver joined Gibbs in the 1950s and served in sales for over 49 years retiring several years ago from his position of Vice President. Even after retirement, John continued to work and considered the Gibbs’ ‘Lunch Bunch’ as some of his dearest friends. John was 85 years old.
