Andrew Collier is a keen rally enthusiast – in fact
he has been a spectator at various British stages
of the World Rally Championship every year
since 1998. This year he couldn’t believe his luck
when he entered a competition in Autosport
magazine and won a VIP hospitality package for
the pre-rally day.
“I was over the moon at winning the prize,” says
Andrew, “and I began to think how I could turn this
into a truly special occasion. The drive up to the
rally stage in Clocaenog Forest would be quite a
long one and I knew that access to some of the
vantage points would mean crossing challenging
terrain. Working for a company that has a Jeep
dealership, the answer seemed obvious...”
Much to Andrew’s surprise, his request to borrow
the Jeep Renegade demonstrator from
T H WHITE’s Swindon dealership for the long
weekend met with an extremely positive response.
“With the Renegade available, this had the makings
of a trip to remember. Tom King from our Devizes
workshop was joining me for the expedition and we

“I’m 6ft 4in tall and I honestly couldn’t
believe how easily I fitted the Renegade.
On the outside it’s a relatively compact
SUV, but it really is a ‘Tardis’ with bags
of space inside. On arrival in North
Wales we were not at all travel-weary,
meaning we could enjoy the VIP day to
the full, with access to the drivers and
the opportunity to meet the whole Ford
M-Sport team in Llandudno. One by one
we waved the cars away as they roared
off on this challenging stage.
“Over the weekend we drove on minor
roads and tracks over the mountains,
searching out the best vantage points,
while back in town in the evenings the
Renegade drew many admiring glances.
In so many ways it was the perfect car
for us and all our luggage and it never
flinched, proving itself sure-footed
even when driving home through the
incredibly rough weather of Storm
Abigail.
“Perhaps the most impressive aspect
was the economy - we drove about 570
miles and used £60 worth of fuel which
equates to about 47mpg.
“Oh, and the rally? It was won again
by reigning champion Sébastian Ogier,
but in second place was Kris Meeke who
turned in the best result for a British
driver for 15 years.
“A big thank-you is due to the team at

a good event into a great one!”

When West Hill Golf Club in Surrey
took delivery of a new Wiedenmann
Terra Spike from T H WHITE back in
September, it was pressed into service
immediately. Aerating more than 1.5
hectares of greens to a generous depth
of 21 cm, it has already produced very
favourable results.
Course manager, Ben Edwards, who
welcomed the XP 210 machine, said he
fully anticipated the deep tine aerator
to be very capable but was instantly
delighted with its speed, neatness and
quality of work.
The XP 210 is Wiedenmann UK’s
widest and deepest machine in its range
of ten Terra Spikes. West Hill selected it
specifically to deal with a long standing
panning issue. “We’ve Bagshot Sand
which pans out quite hard right across
the course,“ said Ben Edwards. “The
Wiedenmann is the only machine that
works comfortably at the level we
require. We need to get way down to 2021cm and this is the perfect machine for
the job. The Terra Spike does just what
you want – you set its QuickSet Depth
with one tool-free adjustment to 20cm
and that’s what you get, regardless of the
length of tines. You can come back the
next day and set the same depth and it’s
all completed with uniformity. With all
the rain we’ve had lately we are seeing a
huge difference – it’s amazingly clean for
such a big machine.”
“We are using the XP literally
everywhere. We started off with 20 mm
tines in a 200 mm square hole pattern
for the tees, approaches and fairways
and then changed to pencil tines. We’ll
use it as much as possible and when the
ground conditions are right; it’s going to
be very busy!”

THERE’S NOTHING NEW ABOUT IT!
Thousands of years
ago, someone
deliberately put wood
on a fire to create
heat. That was the
first use of biomass
fuel, so wood has
been used as fuel for
a long time.
People in many
countries still heat
their homes and cook
their food over wood fires. But despite its
availability, wood is a relatively inefficient
fuel when burned in a traditional fire.
However, when used as biomass,
wood becomes a much more efficient
fuel. In the UK, biomass heating is
still sometimes considered to be a
‘new’ technology, possibly because of
its association with the ‘renewables’
industry, but the reality is that
T H WHITE can offer biomass solutions
from manufacturers who have many
years of experience producing boilers.
HDG, for example, is a Bavarian
company with a strong track record,
recognised across the industry for
superior quality. Almost uniquely in the
market, HDG boilers have been designed
as wood chip boilers that also work
with wood pellets. This is an important
differentiator as the majority of the
market has adapted pellet boilers for
chip.
Burning chip is more onerous for a
boiler and it follows that those principally
designed for chip will outlast those
modified for chip. We therefore are
confident in recommending this tried
and tested equipment, although we can
install other manufacturer’s boilers if
they are more appropriate.
It’s worth noting that, under the
government’s Renewable Heat Incentive
(RHI), it is a requirement to make an
annual declaration that a boiler has
been correctly serviced in line with the
manufacturer’s instructions and one is
also required to submit details of the
origin of all fuel burnt in the previous
year. A boiler can be repaired in the 20
year period of the non-domestic RHI, but
if it needs replacing the system becomes
ineligible for the RHI. Thus, installing
a boiler of high quality makes sound
financial sense, as well as reducing the
risk of breakdowns.
Around the world, biomass fuel is being
added to coal-fired electricity plants.
This process is called co-firing because it
uses two fuels instead of one. The boilers
need only minor adjustments to get the
most from biomass fuel and the most
efficient process adds biomass fuel after
the coal has been pulverized. While coal
is now viewed as a ‘dirty’ fuel due to its
damaging effect on the environment, it
still makes up 30 per cent of the energy
used in electricity production around the
world. Reducing the amount of coal and
increasing the amount of biomass burnt
can make a difference, as we find ways to
produce the energy we need.
In 2005, European Union countries
used biomass for almost 4 per cent of
their energy supply. Finland and Sweden
led the way, with biomass making up
between 16 and 20 per cent of their
energy supply. In the UK we are playing
catch-up, but recent indications suggest
that we are falling short of the UK’s
legally binding targets to get 15 per cent
of energy from renewables by 2020.
Projects to use biomass waste are under
development in Asia, to replace wood,
which is still used in many places and
