Honda for Adventure Sports Warwickshire Ready for winter with biomass at Blenheim Founded in 1879, Worcestershire Golf Club is one of the oldest in England. In the early days the club maintained a nine-hole course on Malvern Common where Sir Edward Elgar was counted among the members, but the present site – set in spectacular scenery at the foot of the Malvern Hills – was acquired in 1925. It opened with an 18-hole McKenzie course which flourished until World War II when the MoD requisitioned nine holes, initially for food production and later with the intention of building on the land. Fortunately that didn’t happen, but even so it was 1972 before the club was able to buy back the land and establish a new 18-hole course incorporating some of the original 1927 holes. Since then, Worcestershire Golf Club has remained extremely popular – hardly surprising given the landscape in which it sits – but it has always battled with difficult Continued on page 2 >> Top: The spectacular setting of Worcestershire Golf Club at the foot of the Malvern Hills. This follows the introduction of carrier bag charging in Wales (October 2011) and in Scotland (October 2014). T H WHITE supports this legislation because it aligns with the Company’s commitment to encourage sustainability and cut down on waste and litter. Customers may request a plastic carrier bag for their purchases, but a charge of 5p will now be made. Under the legislation, the revenue from the sale of carrier bags (excluding the VAT element) may be used by the retailer to support the work of charitable organizations. Until March 2017, the revenue from T H WHITE carrier bag sales will be donated in equal proportions between the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Trust and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Trust. Exemptions from Carrier Bag Charges Customers will not be charged for carrier bags needed to carry exempt items. The exempt items most likely to be sold by T H WHITE are: 1. Unwrapped loose seeds, flowers, bulbs, corns, rhizomes (roots, stems and shoots, such as ginger) or goods contaminated by soil (such as potatoes or plants) 2. Unwrapped blades, including axes, knives, and knife and razor blades Please note that items which are not exempt cannot be added to the bag of exempt items. The text below is extracted from the government website https://www.gov. uk/guidance/carrier-bag-charges-retailersresponsibilities . The website has extensive details about the regulations. “A bag can contain multiple items from this list and not incur a charge. However, if the bag contains other items then you must charge. For example, you wouldn’t charge for a bag containing an unwrapped blade and unwrapped loose seeds, but adding a box of cornflakes means you’d have to charge.” WHITE’S WORLD White's World is published monthly by T H White. A new identity driven by purpose Transformation at Worcestershire Golf Club Continued from front page T H WHITE's Simon Bingham, Course Manager Steve Lloyd and David Timms from Ransomes Jacobsen. drainage and soil conditions. Water runs straight off the Malvern Hills and sits on the many flat greens which have clay under-soil, leading them to become ‘thatchy’ and soft. Almost exactly a year ago Steve Lloyd, who had proved his groundcare skills at Burghill Valley Golf Club near Hereford over the previous 14 years, was appointed Course Manager and together with his team of six has risen to the challenge of bringing the Malvern course back to peak condition. “My first task was to get the water management under control,” he says. “We started by digging a series of new drainage trenches and we are working at the moment on detailed drainage for three of the greens. We have hollow-tined and verti-drained the fairways twice in the last year, as well as adopting a new feed pogramme. It’s paying off and we have been able to adjust the cut from 19mm to 13mm.” When Steve arrived, the club was running quite a lot of older machinery which had resulted in a parts bill for £21,000 in a single year. “That just didn’t make economic sense,” said Steve. “I knew something had to be done so the first thing I looked at was the front-line mowing equipment.” At Burghill Steve had become familiar with the quality and reliability of Jacobsen mowing machines and so he contacted Simon Bingham at T H WHITE’s Redditch branch to work out a viable programme of equipment renewal. “We were able to put together a package on a five year plan that would help to re-equip the club in a financially sensible way,” said Simon. “The first major order to Worcestershire Golf Club was delivered in June this year and included an Eclipse 322 greens mower, a GP400 tees mower, a TR3 firs cut and a Fairway 250 mower. As part of the deal we were also able to supply a Smithco Tournament roller, Turfco Torrent blower, Cushman Hauler Pro, Iseki TG5390 tractor, AFT45 trencher, Wessex RMX roller, MX loader and a Fiat Fiorino van.” The new equipment has replaced a third of the club’s front-line machinery and has greatly accelerated cutting times. “The Groundcare team aims to get out onto the fairways at 6am and we can now have them all done by 8am, ahead of the golfers,” Steve added. Steve works closely with the greens chairman to determine future plans and next in the replacement programme will be utility trucks, sprayers and top dressers. “It has been not just a challenge, but a real privilege to come to Malvern – when you start to see the results of your work it’s extremely gratifying. The support I’ve received from T H WHITE has been outstanding too.” Looking ahead, there’s the opportunity to create extra courses and a driving range on a further 120 acres of land that the club now owns. A new Pro has arrived and there’s also a new business manager. It’s an exciting time of change at Worcestershire Golf Club, but one that will always be tempered by tradition. Most businesses know what they do and, to varying degrees, they know how they do it. But what is often less clear is why they do it – their purpose. The need to define our purpose more clearly led us to take a deep look at our brand, a process that has resulted in a bold new visual identity which will be applied progressively across our business over the next few months. How, then, did we go about this? We began with a research study earlier this year to find out how we are perceived by our customers. At T H WHITE, our purpose has always been to help our customers get the best from innovation, as well as using our ingenuity and know-how to support their businesses, thus helping to secure livelihoods through the generations. In fact, we have been helping customers get the best from machinery, land and buildings since 1832. Many of our customers recognise that when they do business with T H WHITE they are buying into 183 years of know-how, backed up by 24/7 service, but we were unsure how well we were communicating that to the wider world. The research revealed that although many customers appreciated the fact that we are rooted in tradition, we are also viewed as a moderniser and innovator – a ‘traditional moderniser’ if you like. We are considered a trusted brand committed to strong customer GROUP A G R I C U LT U R E PROJEC TS GROUNDCARE DAIRY COUNTRY STORE TRAILER CENTRE LO R RY C R A N E S CONSTRUCTION MOTOR GROUP E N E R G Y, F I R E & SECURITY ONLINE STORE DAIRY CAPITAL PLANT SALESPERSON Honda by choice Tim Rochfort (T H WHITE), left, and Matthew Hill of Adventure Sports 01454 238181 Construction 01672 512328 Grasscare Lorry Cranes Knockdown Reading Redditch Timsbury 01454 238181 0118 976 0088 01527 597770 01794 368993 Devizes 01380 722381 Handling & Storage 01380 723040 Energy 01380 723040 Security & Fire 01380 726656 Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Fiat Professional Abarth, Chrysler & Jeep 01793 680480 Marlborough Country Store 01672 518408 © T H White Group 2015 E&OE Nursteed Road Devizes Wilts SN10 3EA Website: www.thwhite.co.uk Email: [email protected] 2 ISSUE 256 You will have previous capital plant experience and have a proven track record in sales. T H WHITE is a successful, family run company with 180 years of experience in Agricultural Engineering, and is also a DeLaval Main Dealer. We are currently seeking to recruit a Dairy Capital Plant Salesperson. The role includes managing existing business, generating new business and building long term relationships with customers. You will promote maintenance packages and provide advice and guidance on the best packages for the customer. To contact T H White's divisions, call: Agriculture relationships delivering high levels of competence, expertise and responsiveness. Yet we heard that we don’t always articulate a clear purpose and that we don’t necessarily communicate our added-value effectively. Our culture of doing all we can to assist customers’ immediate requirements while anticipating future needs, is articulated through our new customer promise: Hands-on today; eyes on tomorrow. To accompany this, and to express our values in a more cohesive way, we have also developed a ‘new look’ for T H WHITE. Almost everything we do relates in some way to manufacture, engineering or service. To embrace this sense of ‘making’ and ‘innovating’ we have taken each letter of the T H WHITE name and rendered it graphically as a sheet of folded metal. It’s a simple, honest approach, which says a lot about our ingenuity, manufacturing capability and resourcefulness. For the business as a whole our primary logo has the wordmark ‘GROUP’ beneath the metallic letters, while subsidiary logos have been developed for our 10 customer-facing business divisions as well as our Online Store, each divisional name being illustrated in its own colour. We hope that our presence will become even more familiar through the new identity and that we can continue to make a difference to your business and your communities for generations to come. T H WHITE's Toddington branch was delighted recently to secure an order from Adventure Sports Warwickshire for the replacement of its ageing fleet of ATVs with new Honda TRX250 Fourtrax model. The Honda machines were chosen for their reliability, ease of operation and low running costs. Each was specified with the Electric Shift Programme (push button gearchange) which, as Matthew Hill from Adventure Sports explained, is a simple and precise system that the novice rider quickly understands. Adventure Sports Warwickshire offers a huge range of exciting activities from clay shooting, to opposite steer landrovers, to hovercraft driving and quadbike trekking. In return for your hard work and ‘Can Do attitude’ you will receive an attractive package including a non-contributory pension and share incentive scheme, as well as a company vehicle. For further details please contact Adrian Moore, am@thwhite. co.uk. Closing date for applications is 27 November 2015. This is a robust mechanical feeder that can be towed behind a 4x4, ATV or UTV. The generous 320kg hopper capacity enables you to transport enough feed from farm to field and then space individual food piles to reduce sheep crowding. These are recorded by the electronic counter and the distance between each measured by your forward speed. The hopper slide opens and closes automatically once switched on and it counts the number of drops. An adjuster allows you to measure the drop amount so you have complete control over the amount of feed given to your animals. There are various options that include a road-going version, larger wheels, waterproof cover, mudguards and a sheep protector bar. The multi feeder has been in use for many years with farmers all over the country and is a fantastic product that increases efficiency, saves time and reduces food wastage. A final farewell at Grittleton House New managing director Alex Scott hosted the evening T H WHITE staff gathered at Grittleton House School on 17 October for a celebration to bid final farewell to David Scott, who, after 31 years, was succeeded as managing director by his son Alex in April this year. David Scott was presented with a specially commissioned painting of his favourite shooting peg in Wiltshire. Although a genuine surprise, he revealed to guests that when he had been out with his gun the week before he had noticed an artist at work and gone over to speak to him. Little did he know that this was to be his painting – the secret was safe! Drive for Life In October T H WHITE attended a Drive for Life event at Berry Hill College / School, designed to raise road safety awareness amongst young people. Many exhibitors attended to offer advice to young drivers and T H WHITE – represented by Ben Willcox – brought a New Holland T6.160 tractor & trailer to demonstrate the restricted view that a tractor driver has of the traffic behind. The youngsters responded very positively and many valuable messages were taken away. As the Blenheim Palace The spider family is growing! The Groundcare division of T H WHITE recently sent three of its representatives to visit the Dvorak factory in the Czech Republic. The purpose of the trip was to look at the latest innovation in remote controlled specialist banks mowers from Ransomes – and to sample some of the local ale! The Ransomes Spider range is manufactured in state of the art facilities, owned by a company called Dvorak through their specialist machinery division in the Czech Republic. The range comprises three main machines with a new product to increase the line-up to four in early 2016. All machines feature the same technology for mowing in hazardous areas or where slopes are a real issue – it is also versatile enough to cut flat finer turf areas as well. The groundcare division of T H WHITE has already sold units for use in the following applications; mowing under solar panels, banks mowing on road verges, mowing banks in inner cities where larger machinery cannot access, and to military establishments – we have even sold to golf courses and private individuals where banks mowing is a problem. The spider machines are fully radio controlled and are driven by pneumatic tyres with a patented drive system enabling 360 degree wheel steering. They are all based Above: The Ransomes Spider 3 rider has an incredible go-anywhere capability. on a lightweight aluminium alloy structure which aids climbing ability and reduces fuel consumption. Cutting decks are engaged by electromagnetic clutches, while steering and height of cut is adjustable via electric servo motors operated from the radio-controlled handset. Models available are the Spider Mini with a cutting width of 560mm; Spider ILD01 with a cutting width of 800mm; and Spider ILD02, with a cutting width of 1230mm. Shortly to be announced is the Spider 3 Rider, a combination of a ride-on and remote control mower. Tim Lane, divisional director for Groundcare, said “The use of remote control technology is widespread amongst our other divisions – particularly in the Lorry Crane and Construction divisions for the operation of lorry mounted cranes. We have seen a huge interest in this product for many applications and we are delighted to be leading the way with innovation alongside our main supplier, Ransomes. These machines are very well engineered and when used with the stabiliser winches they are extremely impressive.
