In 2016, we at Central Lions Seniors Association celebrate our 50th anniversary. CLSA was originally known as the Senior Citizens Association and was the first association of its kind in Edmonton. Our name evolved to the Central Lions Seniors Citizens Association in 1979 as other seniors groups emerged, and was changed again to our current name - the Central Lions Seniors Association (CLSA) - in 1993. CLSA is an independent non-profit society and we are proud to call the Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre “home”. Our Centre began as a dream of the Edmonton Host Lions Club who – as far back as the early 1930’s - it was envisioned a facility to provide recreational opportunities for Edmonton seniors. In partnership with the City of Edmonton, who provided the land for the centre, the Host Lions realized their dream in 1966 making Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre the first of its kind on the continent. Between 1966 and 2008, our Centre grew from a small building to one of the largest Senior Centres in North America featuring a fitness and wellness facility, weight room, fitness studio and change rooms, sports gymnasium, multiple and specialized classrooms, an auditorium, atrium, cafeteria and meeting areas. Since 1966 the City of Edmonton has owned and managed the facility while CLSA has provided the on-site seniors’ experiences. Together our CLSA-City of Edmonton partnership continues the original dream of the Host Lions Club of improving and enhancing the well-being of Edmonton seniors through programs, clubs and activities that provide recreational, social and educational opportunities. The Alberta Sedimentary Basin (ASB) is a huge resource of water, minerals and fossil fuels. Its thick layers of sedimentary rocks are the host of a dynamic and mammoth 'plumbing' system (100s of kilometers long and thick). Its fluids (water, oil and gas) have been exploited on an intensive industrial scale since the 1940s. The production of this oil and gas offers an opportunity to store waste CO2 emissions in depleted oil & gas reservoirs and saline aquifers. But is it safe? Are there ramifications? Learn from a geologist how this carbon capture and storage could provide a bridge solution for reducing emissions into the atmosphere. Bring your questions.
