he old adage that the only
things certain in life are
death and taxes rings true
for good reason. Taxes have been
with humankind for as long as we
have had rulers and governments.
Equally, the imposition of taxes
has always been viewed with dislike, if not downright hostility.
Many remember the reputation of
the tax collectors recounted in the
Biblical Gospels.
In modern societies, taxes are
the most significant source of government revenue. They are compulsory levies that are regularly
imposed on individuals or corporations and, as a general rule, are
not designated for a specific purpose. Rather, they are regarded as
a contribution to the general revenue pool from which most government expenditures are financed.
A look back into history will reveal that while taxes have always
been with us, there have been
some noteworthy developments.
It would be futile to attempt a
comprehensive description of
these. What is presented is a few
tableaux, which touch on some of
the more dramatic episodes in the
history of taxation. One thing has
clearly remained a constant: the
ability of new tax measures to sow
the seeds of discontent amongst
the populace.

T
he early ‘50s were hell for Sinatra. His popularity slipped; he was
no longer the boy wonder idolized by the bobbysoxers. He even
lost his singing voice for a time, and his career just about hit
bottom. Only his old mob pals would hire him for their clubs. He was
also embroiled in a tempestuous relationship with actress Ava Gardner
whose career was on the rise while his was sinking lower and lower.
When they married in 1951, gossip columnists snidely referred to Sinatra as “Mr. Ava Gardner.”

Obama announces Afghanistan troop reductions
Thanks to the tremendous progress
U.S.,
coalition
and
Afghan
troops
have
made, the United States will
draw down the
number of troops
in Afghanistan by
10,000 this year and
33,000 by the end of summer 2012, President Barack Obama
said recently.
“The tide of war is receding,”
Obama said, during an address to
the nation from the White
House. “Fewer of our
sons and daughters
are
serving
in
harm’s way.”
In a statement
released by the
Pentagon following the president’s
announcement, Defense Secretary Robert
M. Gates said the president’s
decision capitalizes on the security
successes.
“Over the past 18 months our troops
have made tremendous progress de-
grading the capability of the Taliban
while enhancing the Afghan security
forces,” Gates said. “It is critical that
we continue to aggressively prosecute
that strategy. I support the President’s
decision because it provides our commanders with enough resources, time
and, perhaps most importantly, flexibility to bring the surge to a successful conclusion.”
When completed in September
2012, the drawdown will remove the
last of the plus-up of forces in Afghanistan that Obama ordered in December
2009 during a speech at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
Program links wounded vets
with health care jobs
a projected 4 million jobs added in the
health care industry.
The core training, which was developed in collaboration with Easter
Seals, is offered in traditional classroom settings, online or through home
study with a DVD and workbook. The
modules focus on the health and wellbeing of both the vet and the family
caregiver. The training includes information on Caregiver self-care, home
safety, practical care giving skills,
providing personal care services to
the veteran, managing challenging
behaviors and locating additional resources. Vets may review the criteria
for eligibility and download the Family Caregiver program application (VA
CG 10-10) at www.caregiver.va.gov.
Support for all caregivers is also available via the National Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274.
A new program called Hero Health
Hire will make jobs available to some
of the 10,000 wounded warriors who
transition each month from the military into the workforce.
The program encourages health
care providers to recruit wounded
warriors and helps them to provide a
welcoming workplace. The initiative
offers a tailored mentoring program to
help new employees succeed at their
jobs, with special attention to former
service members who have lingering
issues related to post-traumatic stress
disorder or traumatic brain injury.

Post 9/11 Veterans started their caregiving training June 9 and 10. “There is
no more valuable tool we can provide
family caregivers than the knowledge
and training needed to perform this
highly demanding labor of love,” said
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.
Shinseki. “This training we provided
in partnership with Easter Seals will
meet this need and support Veterans

‘Class’ means
more than just
your rank
How formal is formal in this day
and age when establishing personal
and professional relationships in the
armed forces community. I have spoken with many young adults who are
military and many young adults who
are not, about the formalities that
go on when working or socializing
with each other. Some of the praise
reports I have listened to really do
hold true to the history and reputation that has been established in the
USAF. However, some reports have
not been so positive.
There are also many ways on how
young adults deal with stress and
being an active member of the military does not always make life easier.
Sometimes it does but those ways
such as financial and educational
benefits work for their physical existence but not so much for their
emotional dispositions and even the
psychological self as well. War is
War and politics are politics, both of
which young adults in the USAF are
faced with almost daily. This kind of
stress “spills over” if you will, into
there relationships on and off base
and from what I have heard, is starting to create reputations that some
soldiers , officers and even superiors,
can not redeem themselves from.
Reputations that have absolutely
no merit in or about the honor code
they have sworn too as soldiers of
war.
Being negative is not my “cup of
tea” but for some of these soldiers it
is. Is there such a thing as etiquette
in these times of economical and
political struggle? There should be,
NO MATTER HOW these trials and
tribulations affect us, treating ourselves and others, in the best way
possible is very important. Maybe
some soldiers did not have the benefits of parental and financial support
while growing up, so life as a teenager might have lacked structure
and discipline. Well that was then
and this is now and the USAF make
sure that kind of lifestyle is provided
for them now. There are no excuses
for behaving and treating yourself
or others with disrespect. I guess the
next question is what is Class?

Officer retirement
board zones defined
The Secretary of the Navy approved the convening of the fiscal
year 2012 selective early retirement
board for captains and commanders in
the unrestricted line, July 25.
The Selective Early Retirement
board (SER) was originally announced
in NAVADMIN 006/11 and provided eligible captains and commanders time
to submit retirement requests to avoid
consideration. Those who voluntarily
retired could choose to leave active
service anytime before September 1,
2012, while those selected by the SER
would be retired within seven months
of the
board
results
being
approved by the secretary of the Navy,
which is expected to be April 1, 2012.
The SER board was required due
to high retention, reduction in officer
billets and low attrition among active
component senior officers in the unrestricted line.
To learn more about the SER board,

website at www.npc.navy.mil.
Militarily Speaking from Page 2
the definition of “Ethics, in a system
of moral principals.” What is supposed
to take place at the workplace should
take place at home too. How can a
soldier, officer or superior establish
the skills that are needed to provide a
ethical and moral environment for his
or her peers and family members when
that was not provided for them as a
child? It will not be easy at first but
if these servicemen can somehow seek
a POSITIVE INFLUENCE on or off
base then it is almost guaranteed that
establishing their reputation based on
moral and ethical values would be very
attainable.
There are many members of the
USAF that function on and off base
with great ethical and moral values.
They hold true and steadfast to the expectations that civilians hold so dearly
when meeting and creating relationships with servicemen. No matter
what, it is never too late to establish a
great reputation for your self…After
all there is only one YOU and it is quite
possible that YOU are the POSITIVE
INFLUENCE and it is YOUR last name
that could quite possibly go down in
history.

Stand
Down
2011
July 15-17
What is a Stand Down?
In times of war, exhausted combat
units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security
and safety. Today, Stand Down refers
to a community-based intervention
program designed to help the nation’s
estimated 200,000 homeless veterans
“combat” life on the streets.
This year’s Stand Down will be held
on the upper athletic field of San Diego High School, same as last year.
The Veterans Village of San Diego
(VVSD) organized the nation’s first
Stand Down in 1988. Since then, the
program has been widely replicated
nationwide. Today, more than 200
Stand Downs take place across the
country every year. “The program
has become recognized as the most
valuable outreach tool to help homeless veterans in the nation today,” according to the National Coalition for
Homeless Veterans.
To learn more about VVSD visit our
website at www.vvsd.net. Join VVSD on

San Diego is home to Command
Navy Region South West, the Navy’s
Pacific Fleet, Navy Medical Center
San Diego, Marine Corps Installations West, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, and most of these units’
subordinate commands. All these
commands give San Diego the highest rate of separating service members on the west coast and why
Southern California is home to over
900,000 veterans, with 230,000
of those in San Diego. The figures
would make any county proud, but
there is a number that puts them to
disgrace — San Diego’s streets are
occupied by over 1,200 homeless veterans any given night.
Veterans in San Diego and many
surrounding areas make up about
40% of the homeless population, and
25% nationwide, but veterans only
make up roughly 12% of the U.S.
population. Homeless veterans immediately conjure thoughts of Vietnam vets, that still make up 35% of
the homeless veterans on the street,
but there is a disturbing trend beginning. Soon enough, homeless post
9-11 vets will surpass homeless Vietnam vets. We are hitting the streets
at a rate faster than the Vietnam
vets did as they returned home.
Since 1988, San Diego has been
home to Stand Down. Last year,
Stand Down assisted nearly 1,000
homeless veterans and their families. Of those served, last year’s
Stand Down saw a dramatic rise in
post 9-11 veterans, and is expecting
that number to increase substantially. Stand Down should not be considered a hand out for those in need,
but is a hand up to help veterans
gets back on their feet, and on a solid path. Stand Down, and programs
like it, should be a last resort.
The best way to treat homelessness is prevention. Plan for the possibility of failure, the worst-case
scenario, and start saving for the
future during the present. Know the
resources available to you. There are
government and community organizations (VA, EDD, Interfaith, VVSD)
that will help you with your resume,
training, and finding a job. Take advantage of your benefits, and most
importantly — don’t be afraid to ask
for help.

Brief History
The famous American Revolution
changed the world’s political scenario
drastically. It started in the 18th century and led to the independence of
the American people from the British
rule in the late eighteenth century.
The fertility and prosperity of the
American land attracted the British
rulers. They wanted to exploit the
money and the flourishing resources
present in the fertile land. A sevenyear battle between the French and
Indian armies gave the British victory. However, the battle left the colonial rulers financially poor. In order
to make up for the financial losses,
they levied huge amounts of taxes on
the colonists. The taxes paid were directly sent to the British treasury and
were to be used by the British army in
North America.
Apart from this, the British also proposed and passed numerous laws that
restricted the movement and freedom
of the colonists in an extremely unfair
manner. The famous Boston Tea Party
in 1773 was one of the few uprising
movements started by the American
people where they openly violated the
tax laws levied on tea goods imported
from the British East India Company.
The “Midnight Ride” by Pay Revere was one of the many important
and courageous acts performed by
numerous Americans to revolt against
the British rule. In 1775, Mr. Franklin wrote the Declaration of Independence after the infamous wars in
Concord and Lexington, which saw the
death of innocent Americans in the
wedding receptions

hands of the British. An eight-year war
from 1775 to 1783 led to the overpowering and dethroning of the British
rule, giving victory and helping thirteen colonies unite under one banner
as the United States of America.
Why did the
American Revolution
happen ?
The American Revolution lasted
for eight years leading to the culmination of the British rule on American soil. While there were numerous
events and incidences that sowed
deep enmity and hatred between the
colonists and the British, the continuous suppression and unjust treatment
meted out to the colonists led to the
Declaration of Independence and the
subsequent War in 1775.
America was an extremely fertile
and prosperous land. A great degree
of freedom and independence led to
equality and prosperity in the region.
Urbanization was at its minimum.
The rich and poor were employed and
earned enough wages to sustain a
peaceful living for themselves.
The British wanted to exploit the
financial prospects of a country that
was blessed with numerous resources.
Irrespective of whether the people
were rich or poor, eighty percent of
the families owned lands and other
properties in the area. This was an
entirely different concept when compared to England where only the rich
and the royal members could have
land properties.

Stepping Up!
W
ith all that has been going on in the world, you, like
me, may have been feeling a bit overwhelmed lately. I know that many with whom I have been talking
recently express that they are feeling anxiety and feeling
shaky. They say their plates are full. Do you feel similarly? I
understand. We, as a people, have been through a lot. Many
have been glued to the TV watching the wars and chaos, the
election process beginning again and weather developments
with destructive storms.
Well, I would like to share a story that was shared with
me and one I used frequently while I was serving at one of our Alcohol Rehab
Centers.
This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the
farmer’s old dry well. The farmer heard the mule braying or whatever mules do when
they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized
with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble
of saving.
Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his
misery.
Initially the old mule was hysterical! But, as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back…a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on
him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT
OFF and STEP UP! This he did blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off
and step up…shake it off and step up! He repeated to encourage himself. No matter
how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed the old mule fought
“panic” and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF and STEPPING UP!
It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT WELL! What seemed like it would bury him
actually helped him…all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.
That’s life! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness or self-pity…the adversities that come along
to bury us, usually have within them, the very real potential to benefit us!
We all will face times of great darkness, hurt and trouble. In the scriptures,
the ancient prophet Micah gave us words of hope. He said, “When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.”
To find the light that will guide us
through our difficult times and troubles, we might want to look to our Lord
for divine inspiration and assistance.
Then, like the mule in the story, we
may see opportunities we hadn’t before noticed.
So, if this fits your life right now,
try to remember this story. Life may
be hard at times, but we can look for
the growing opportunities before us
and as we have heard said before,
“turn lemons into lemonade.”
Like the mule, we may be battered
and bruised and feel like panicking at
times, but by “shaking it off and stepping up” to overcome our trials, we
will grow in strength and build confidence in knowing that we don’t have
to ever go it alone, God is there. He
invites us to allow Him to be a light
that guides and assists our abilities to
handle whatever may befall us and to
have a happier, brighter future.
As
it
says in my
favorite scripture
verse, “He giveth power to the faint; and
to them that have no might he increaseth strength…But they that wait upon
the Lord shall renew their strength; they
shall mount up as on eagles wings; they
shall run and not be weary; and they
shall walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah
40:29 & 31) This is meant for each and
every one of you to take courage and
know that we never have to completely
go it alone.
It is my hope and prayer that this
message will help you this week to
“mount up as on eagle’s wings” and renews a little of your strength to keep
moving forward and find joy.
Until next week, may God bless
you, those who are in the middle of the
fight and this great nation.

The British suffered tremendous losses during the Seven-year war and therefore taxed the American colonists heavily to make up for the losses. This forced
colonists to pay exuberant amounts of money pushing them towards poverty.
Numerous Acts had a direct impact on the movements and freedom of the colonists. The Sugar Act levied tax charges on colonists who imported sugar from
West Indies. Similarly, the Stamp Act levied taxes on newspapers, marriage licenses and other legal documents. The Quartering Act forced the colonists to
take care and feed the British soldiers as and when necessary.
A tragic Boston massacre and Battle at Lexington and Concord forced the
people to stand up against the aristocratic British rule of forty years leading to
the American Revolution.

Ryan Decenzo wins the Red Bull Triple Set
at Del Mar
In final 7 showdown,
Decenzo’s buzzer beater
laser flip seals this deal in
a full field of top
skateboarding talent
The skateboarding talent was out
at the Del Mar Arena on Sunday, June
19th. It was difficult to pick out the
amateurs from the pros – the talent
was that good. It was definitely an elite
group of pros that showed up, mixed
with some new talented up and coming
amateurs. Some of the top skateboarders in the world were in the field such as,
Dennis Durant, Sierra Fellers, Tommy
Sandoval, Tony Tave, Manny Santiago,
and Curtis Calamonico. This talented
skateboarding field was overextended
at (50) 58 skateboarders, with over
25,000 people that came to watch them
go all out. The skateboarding was so intense throughout all of the heats, that
18 contestants made it to the semi-finals. The Judges and MC’s consisted of legend X-Games pro skateboarders such as
Dayne Brummet, Rodd James, Neil Mims, and Aaron Astorga. This panel of judges were stunned by the consistency
of technical skateboarding that was being thrown down, mixed
with professional style. After a huge pack of top semi-finalists, we
narrowed it down to the final seven. In the final round, everyone
was landing every trick, and was mind blowing to say the least. It
took the judges over 20 minutes to deliberate who were the top 3
skateboarder finalists for the cash purse of $5000.00. The crowd
and judges were just blown away, as it is very rare that you see
skateboarding this consistent, and so competitive. Amateur Dave
Vaughn ended up at 3rd place, doing some massive flip tricks up
and over the feature with solid style, and technical precision. 2nd
place was taken by pro skateboarder Manny Santiago who was a
crowd favorite, and skated with pure heart. Manny’s skateboarding tricks were powerful, and machine like. Red Bull Athlete
Ryan Decenzo did an array of difficult tricks on the rail, ledge,
gap, and proved why he is currently at the top of the skateboarding world. Ryan’s trick that sealed the deal (in the clutch) was his
buzzer-beater laser flip, showing how diversified and talented of
a skateboarder he truly is taking home 1st place with a $3000.00
check !. Next stop for Ryan is the X-Games...
Steel Magnolias

The silent
ranks
By Crystal Arriaga
From time to time spouses are referred to as the silent ranks or steel
magnolias of the Marine Corps; but
what does that mean? We all know the
last thing we are is silent! In my opinion, it means that
at times it may appear as if we’re just
standing in the shadows of our Marines
or behind the scenes
but we are not and
you have a powerful voice. You may
think that spouses
get forgotten about and you’re opinion doesn’t count, yet with the help of
a cooperative command and proactive
FRO the viewpoints of all should be
taken into consideration.
The men talk constantly about
Marine’s being a different breed of
service member; well I think we have
to be a different breed of spouse as
well. Being a part of the silent ranks
requires you to be creative, flexible,
passionate, strong, humorous, stubborn, patriotic, patient and supportive to name a few. Think about it we
are all very different on the outside
just as no two magnolia flowers are
created the same and also all in the
same bumpy LCAC “water hovercraft
thingy” ride as a family. Marine Corps
spouses have to be committed and
head over heels in love with their Marines to overcome the challenges of
this life. We’re always at the ready and
armed with multitudes of paperwork
and phone numbers as well as the
FRO’s information. Marine spouses
repeatedly endure hours of standing
impatiently in parking lots, on piers
and in airports for a glimpse of the
Marine we just let go and then again
months later when we long to see and
hold them after the return from long
deployments.
During deployments you fierce Silent Ranks become the Commander
and chief of the house so that hopefully the Marines’ minds are able to
focus on the task at hand during training and deployments. If not it would
be nearly impossible for them to train
and be prepared for the mission that
lay ahead of them. As the spouse of
a Marine you are a very important
part of what helps make our Marines
able to be the few and the proud. So I
thank you for being resilient and your
service and dedication to these Marines and the Marine Corps.

Define Your Civilian
Job Objective
You can’t effectively market yourself for a civilian job if you don’t
have a clearly defined goal. Because so many service people
have diverse backgrounds, they
often make the mistake of creating resumes that are too general
to be effective. Before writing
your resume, do some soul searching,
research occupations and pinpoint a specific career path. If you’re having trouble with this step, tap into your local transition office or solicit the help of a career coach. If you’re torn between two or more
potential goals, set up different resumes.
Create a Resume That Speaks to Employers’ Needs
Now that your objective is defined, you’re ready to create a winning resume. Consider a resume’s purpose: To answer the employer’s question, “What can this person do for me?”
A great way to start thinking about employers’ needs is to research your target
job. Search for jobs, scour company Web sites and read as many job postings as
possible. What types of skills and experiences are employers seeking? What aspects of your background are most relevant?
Any information that does not relate to your goal should be eliminated or deemphasized, and this includes any unrelated military awards, training and distinctions. For example, that medal you won for rifle marksmanship doesn’t belong on
a civilian resume. This is often the hardest step for ex-military personnel, which is
why it’s so common to see military resumes span five pages or more. As you decide
which information to include, ask yourself, “Will a potential employer care about
this experience?” Only include information that will help you land an interview.

Received Army Achievement Medal for completing 400+ medical evaluations and
developing patient database using MS Access. The database improved reporting
functions and tracked patient demographics, records, medication, appointments
and status.
Flaunt Your Military Background
You might have heard you need to develop a functional resume format to mask
or downplay your military experience, but the opposite is true. Your military experience is an asset and should be marketed as such. Many employers realize
the value of bringing veterans on board. Attributes honed in the military include
dedication, leadership, teamwork, positive work ethic and cross-functional skills.
If you fear a potential employer won’t realize the significance of your military
experience, make sure your resume clearly communicates the value you bring to
the table.
If You Were in Active Combat, Leave out the Details
Defending your country and its interests is among the most admirable pursuits,
but the sad truth is actual references to the horrors of combat leave many employers squeamish. While you might have worked in a short-range air defense
engagement zone, this experience might not relate to your future goal. Tone down
or remove references to the battlefield.
Test-Drive Your Resume
For some veterans, developing a resume that works in the civilian world is an
ongoing process. After you’ve polished your resume, start your distribution and
keep track of your resume’s response rate. Solicit feedback and listen carefully to
suggestions for improving your resume. Continue modifying the document until
it successfully generates job interviews.
Assume No Knowledge of the Military
Demilitarize your job titles, duties, accomplishments, training and awards to appeal to civilian hiring managers. Employers with no exposure to the military don’t
understand the terminology and acronyms, so translate these into civilianese.
Show your resume to several nonmilitary friends and ask them to point out terms
they don’t understand. Refer to job postings for help substituting civilian keywords for military terms.
Showcase Your Accomplishments
Your military career has offered you excellent opportunities for training, practical
experience and advancement. Tout your accomplishments so the average civilian
understands the importance of your achievements and the measurable outcomes.
Here’s an example of a demilitarized accomplishment statement:
Increased employee retention rate by 16 percent by focusing on training, team
building and recognition programs. Earned reputation as one of the most progressive and innovative IT organizations in the Army’s communications and IT

GANGSTERS, OUTLAWS, COPS & OTHER CHARACTERS
FRANK SINATRA AND THE MOB
By Anthony Bruno
It’s widely believed that Gardner
was the great love of Sinatra’s life.
Perhaps more accurately, she was the
great obsession of his life. He loved
her madly and couldn’t live without
her, but their fights were legendary,
and when they got physical, rooms
were trashed and furniture was demolished. When Sinatra and Gardner
finally separated in 1953, Sinatra fell
into a deep depression. He still loved
her and was insanely jealous of any
man who was with her. Their Mexican
divorce was finally completed in 1957.
Gardner dated several men after Sinatra, but she was never married again.
The Rat Pack
By the early 1960s Sinatra was back
on his feet, swinging hard and flying
high. His voice had returned, stronger
and fuller than before. The dreamboat
crooner had transformed himself into
a confident, somewhat world-weary,
brutally honest saloon singer. A bachelor in his 40s with money, fame and
connections, he became the self-appointed leader of an elite group of entertainers who called themselves the
Clan. The rest of the world knew them
as the Rat Pack. The principal members were singer Dean Martin, singer
and dancer Sammy Davis Jr., actor Peter Lawford, and comedian Joey Bishop. As accomplished as each one was
individually, when they were together,
they took their cues from Sinatra. People started calling him the Chairman
of the Board, and they said it with the
deep respect afforded a Mafia don.
Throughout his life, Sinatra sought
out alliances with powerful men, both
in the legitimate and illegitimate
worlds. While his “hoodlum complex”
led him toward Chicago boss Sam
“Momo” Giancana in the early ‘60s,
his power complex brought him into
the ultimate circle of power, that of the
newly elected president of the United
States, John F. Kennedy. Sinatra was
close to Giancana, and he wanted to be
closer to Kennedy. Behind the scenes
Giancana shared that desire because
he wanted what no Mafia capo had
ever achieved—access to the Oval Office. He saw Sinatra as his conduit. But
to have the president’s ear, Giancana
knew that he would have to give a little to get a little.
In the 1960 presidential election,
Kennedy, then the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, was running against
the sitting Republican vice
president, Richard Nixon.
The Kennedy campaign had
pinpointed certain areas of
the country that could go
either way in the election,
and they need help securing
these areas. The word was
passed from Kennedy’s father, former U.S. ambassador
to Great Britain Joseph Kennedy, to Sinatra: Ask your
“friend” in Chicago to help
us with West Virginia and
Cook County, Illinois. Giancana was willing to oblige,
delivering his home turf as
well as West Virginia where
his outfit had enough sway to
influence the election. When
Kennedy won, Giancana expected the new administration to show its thanks by getting the feds
off his back. Unfortunately for Giancana,
it wasn’t going to be a simple quid pro quo.
Sinatra had done everything he could
to ingratiate himself with JFK. He had
performed at fundraisers during the
campaign and personally planned a starstudded inaugural gala after Kennedy’s
election. He had had the lyrics to his hit
song “High Hopes” rewritten to make it
Kennedy’s election theme song. And late
at night when the press wasn’t looking,
Sinatra had shown Kennedy the good life,
Rat-Pack style—booze, broads and laughs
galore.
Sinatra was living a Jekyll and Hyde
existence. By day he was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and social justice.
By night he was the bad boy-in-chief of the
Rat Pack, personifying every naughty little vice that the American male desired.
When the president joined the revelry,
Sam Giancana saw an opportunity.
Judith Campbell
The gorgeous Ava Gardner
At Giancana’s suggestion, Sinatra introduced Kennedy to a fetching young
brunette named Judith Campbell. Giancana felt that Kennedy would find her
attractive because he thought she vaguely resembled the classy first lady, Jackie Kennedy. Kennedy did find Campbell alluring, and the two had an affair. At
the same time Giancana started dating Campbell, but according to his brother
Chuck in his book Double Cross, it wasn’t because he desired Campbell. Giancana had a habit of wooing the wives and girlfriends of men he wanted to control. It was his way of gaining inside information and showing that he could have
anything his target held dear. Giancana’s affair with Campbell was brief, but
this time the strategy backfired on him.

Kennedy’s advisors rightly felt that
the president of the United States should
not be sharing a bed with a woman who
was also dating one of the country’s top
mobsters, particularly when Kennedy’s
brother Robert, the attorney general,
was working so hard to rid the country of
organized crime. Almost overnight the
president made a turnaround, dumping
Campbell and distancing himself from
Sinatra, who was stunned by the sudden
cold shoulder from the White House.
(Kennedy, it should be noted, did not
completely clean up his act as far as extramarital affairs were concerned.) The
change in attitude was felt most dramatically when Kennedy, who had planned
to stay at Sinatra’s home in Palm Springs
during a California visit in March 1962,
abruptly changed his plans and stayed
with singer Bing Crosby, a Republican!
Sinatra had even gone to the expense of
building an addition on his house to accommodate the president and his staff.
Sinatra was mortified, but Giancana
was furious. Wiretaps revealed Giancana’s disappointment with Sinatra and
his low regard for the singer. When it
became clear that Sinatra wasn’t going
to get him what he wanted, the mobster
had no use for him.
Never one to put all his eggs in one
basket, Giancana was also courting the
CIA at this time, promising to use mob
hitmen to poison Communist Cuban leader Fidel Castro. It was all a scam, though, to get huge payments
from the government for a service that Giancana had no intention of ever delivering. Giancana was playing
them, the same way he had played Sinatra. But apparently Sinatra never caught on because he continued
to value Giancana’s friendship. It was a friendship that would later cost him big time

Return of The Three Stooges
“The Three Stooges” were never what you’d
call highbrow. But who the heck cares? The
characters remain enduring symbols of slapstick comedy.
N
ow, after many delays, the Farrelly brothers are making a “Stooges” film with three
relative unknowns in the title roles. On-set pictures of the actors lit up the Web as
folks got their first glimpse of Curly in costume.
Played by Will Sasso, perhaps best known for his work on “MADtv,” Curly has always
been a popular stooge (we mean that as a compliment). His phrase “nyuk-nyuk-nyuk” and
his tendency to slap his own head have been imitated by countless comedians.
So how does Sasso look? Longtime fans of the character will be relieved to see that Sasso is the spitting image of the original Curly, played by the late,
great Jerry Horwitz. Only time will tell if Sasso “acts” like Curly,
but there can be no doubt that he looks the part.
A post from Screen Rant agrees, after seeing the snapshots:
“From some of the close-ups, it looks like the Farrelly brothers
and their team have done a nice job.”
A commenter on the Entertainment Weekly’s Inside Movies blog had some reservations of style winning over substance:
“Hmmm he’s got the look down but that is just window dressing,
what really counts is if he can actually act like Curly.” Others
gave the casting choice a thumb’s up: “Will Sasso was hilarious
over many seasons on MAD TV - he is funny and fearless.” Another added, “This is pitch-perfect casting.” A third added, and we quote, “Will Sasso to us
MadTV fans is the shiznizle!. Can’t wait to see him knock it out of the park!”
Jennifer Hudson joins
‘Three Stooges’ cast
A
By Gil Kaufman
Jennifer Hudson is headed back to the big screen, and you’ll never
guess in which movie. The Oscar- and Grammy-winning singer/actress
has been cast as a nun in the Farrelly brothers’ long-gestating film
“The Three Stooges.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hudson will play one of the nuns in the orphanage where the Stooges spend some time as children alongside “Glee” star Jane Lynch, who
has been cast as Mother Superior in the film. Hudson’s Sister Rosemary will be among a
trio of nuns that reportedly will also include “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David.
After years of false starts and attempts to reboot the classic eye-poking, head-bonking
comedy franchise with stars such as Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey, the movie
now is being headlined by the trio of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamontopoulos.
“The Three Stooges” is slated to hit theaters after Hudson’s already-filmed Winnie Mandela biopic, “Winnie.”

nd now a page from our Sunday Morning Almanac: June 19th,
1897, 114 years ago today, the launch of a zany comic tradition.
For that was the day Moses Horwitz was born in Brooklyn,
New York.
As a young man with a bowl-shaped haircut he drifted into vaudeville... and adopted the stage name Moe Howard.
In the 1930s he hit the big time when he and his younger brother
Jerome — stage name “Curly” — and fellow vaudevillian Larry Fine
won a Hollywood contract as “The Three Stooges.”
Over the years, the Stooges slapped and poked and wise-guyed
their way through nearly 200 comic shorts with a no-holds-barred
style that was all their own.
Moe’s older brother Shemp took Curly’s place in 1946, and with a
few other changes the Stooges soldiered on.
In 1973, Moe and his signature haircut even made an appearance
on “The Mike Douglas Show.”
Moe Howard died in 1975 at the age of 77. But the Stooges live on
to this day in reruns... not to mention in a “Three Stooges” movie due
out next year, directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly. The film will feature “24” star Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, “Will and Grace” star
Sean Hayes as Larry, and “MAD TV” comic Will Sasso as Curly.
Fans of the Stooges never tire of their heroes... and at a convention we attended back in 1991, one fan tried to explain the attraction:
“People identify with them, I think, because they make you feel
smart. When you sit back and watch these guys, you think: ‘Thank
God there are at least three people in the world that are dumber than
me!’”
If you wonder why the fame of this trio so huge, it’s ‘cause we hope
we’re smarter than, Moe and his fellow Stooges.

Agua Caliente Race Track
Years ago I was invited to a party at Jorge Hank Rohn’s house in Tijuana. I was
publishing a newspaper called “The Tourista” and one of my employees was from
Mexico City. She was recently divorced from her husband who was a secretary or
minister who worked for the government in Mexico City. She warned me not to go
because just by attending I could get into a lot of trouble. I took her advice and
never went to the party. I never met Mr. Rohn but I was told that he was a kind
and generous man but he was always rumored to be involved in some crimes that
were politically motivated; he was never convicted of any of those crimes. A friend
and confidant of Hanks, Hector ”Gato” Felix, had some kind of dispute and Felix
was writing negative stories about Rohn. Hank’s body guard and a Agua Caliente
security guard murdered Felix and were incarcerated for about three weeks, but
were released and never heard from again. This happened in 1988 and we will pick
up Hank’s story starting in 2004. This was an article that first appeared in the L.A.
Weekly back in 2006 . . . We shall continue this in future issues of The Military
Press.

T
here is an old Tijuana joke about a group of
dogs hanging out below the border. All of
them are locals, except for one, who comes
south every day to visit from La Jolla, the precious
coastal enclave north of San Diego where lawns are
green even in the driest of droughts. The La Jolla
dog tells the Tijuana dogs how good he has it. He
brags about running around in a big back yard full
of beautiful flowers and freshly cut grass, about
how his owners feed him scraps of filet mignon and
grilled salmon, and about how at night, they let him
jump up on the bed with them and cuddle into the
morning on sheets of 300-thread-count Egyptian
cotton. The Tijuana dogs are incredulous.
“If you have it so good up there,” they ask the La
Jolla dog, “then why do you always come down here
to be with us in Tijuana?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” the La Jolla dog replies. “I come to Tijuana to bark.”
Dogs bark everywhere in Tijuana. On busy stoplight corners next to kids juggling sticks orange with ragged fire, at the entrance to muffler shops chained
to metal posts, beneath an oil-soaked Chevy chassis abandoned in a junkyard,
along any road where they trot, in gangly packs of misshapen mongrels, until
they’re crushed or abducted or shoved into a dark box in somebody’s frontyard
garage. In Tijuana, there are the backfires of cars, the moan of dying brakes,
the whistles of taqueros, the songs of coin-craving troubadours armed with toy
accordions, and there are the barks of the dogs.
Yet none of these dogs are barking. There must be 20 of them. Most are lying
down, some are sleeping, some are playing, all flopping paws and biting snouts.

The Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel opened in June 1928 in the Mexican city of Tijuana, Baja California. One year later, in December 1929, the
$2.5 million Agua Caliente Racetrack opened. Like the resort, the racetrack
was designed by Wayne McAllister and built by wealthy Americans Baron
Long, a Los Angeles nightclub owner, Wirt Bowman, owner of the Tijuana
gambling establishment, The Foreign Club, and James Crofton, a member of
the local Tijuana horseracing establishment. Some sources note the fourth
partner was Abelardo L. Rodriguez, Military Commander and Governor of
Baja, and future Mexican President. The lavish resort and racetrack on the
Mexican border was popular among Americans, particularly Hollywood celebrities, because drinking, gambling and horse racing were still illegal in
most of the neighboring U.S. states.
Although Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling in
1935 and closed the resort and casino, the Agua Caliente Racetrack continued to operate for many years. It was the site of several industry firsts,
including starting gates, safety helmets, and “pick six” wagering. Both Phar
Lap and Seabiscuit ran and won the Agua Caliente Handicap. The original grandstand structure was destroyed by fire in 1971, but was rebuilt and
continues to operate today, though just a shadow of its opulent beginnings.
It is currently owned by millionaire politician Jorge Hank and it no longer
holds horse races but rather greyhound races. The sports book in Tijuana get
packed by San Diegans going down there to gamble and place bets on there
favorite football, baseball, basketball team. In Tijuana you can bet on just
about anything.

The opening segment of a forthcoming autobiography by Sugar Ray
Leonard runs counter to the cunning
style he used in winning boxing championships in five weight divisions more
than a quarter-century ago. It is more
like hearing the bell, rushing to the
center of the ring and being hit with a
straight right hand.
Sugar Ray Leonard with Ulrich
Beyer in a light-welterweight quarterfinal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
Leonard won a gold medal, then made
his professional debut the next year.
Most fans of Leonard remember him
for his sweet smile and lightning-fast
hands, as a transcendent and breakout
celebrity in a brutal profession. But by
Page 36 of “The Big Fight: My Life In
and Out of the Ring,” to be published
next month by Viking, Leonard has
mentioned his cocaine use, growing up
in a home with alcohol abuse and domestic violence, luckily surviving a car
wreck with his mother at the wheel,
almost drowning in a creek as a child
who was unable to swim, and fathering
a son at 17.
Two pages later, Leonard delivers
the book’s bombshell while indirectly
addressing a growing concern in the
sports industry at large. He reveals
publicly for the first time that he was
sexually abused as a young fighter by
an unnamed “prominent Olympic boxing coach.”
Leonard writes that when the coach
accompanied him as a 15-year-old and
another young fighter to a boxing event
in Utica, N.Y., in 1971, he had the teenagers take a bath in a tub of hot water
and Epsom salts while he sat on the other

the bathroom. They suspected
“something a bit inappropriate” was
occurring but did not want to question
a strong male authority figure.
Several years later, Leonard describes sitting in a car in a deserted
parking lot across from a recreation
center, listening intently as the same
coach, said to be in his late 40s, explained how much a gold medal at the
1976 Olympics would mean to his future.
Leonard was flattered, filled with
hope, as any young athlete would be.
But he writes: “Before I knew it, he had
unzipped my pants and put his hand,
then mouth, on an area that has haunted me for life. I didn’t scream. I didn’t
look at him. I just opened the door and
ran.”
He adds that when he first decided
to discuss the incident in the book,
which is written with Michael Arkush,
he offered a version in which the abuser stopped before there was actual contact.
“That was painful enough,” Leonard writes. “But last year, after watching the actor Todd Bridges bare his
soul on Oprah’s show about how he was
sexually abused as a kid, I realized I
would never be free unless I revealed
the whole truth, no matter how much
it hurt.”
Through his publisher, Leonard,
who turned 55 on Tuesday, May 17, declined to comment for this article, saying that he would begin doing publicity
for the book in June. But several people who were close to him when he was
routinely banking multimillion-dollar
purses for title bouts with Roberto
Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin
Hagler were taken aback when told of
what he has revealed in the book.
“This is the first time I’ve ever
heard that, and I’ve known Ray since
he was just a kid,” Dave Jacobs, who
was Leonard’s first trainer as an amateur and later served as assistant
trainer for many of his professional
fights, said in a telephone interview.
“He never talked about that to me and
no one in the group ever mentioned it,
so I assume he never talked about it to
them, either.
“But if that incident did happen, I
feel sorry for him in that part of his
life and for having to carry that around
with him.”
Angelo Dundee, who achieved fame
as Muhammad Ali’s trainer and later
became the head man in Leonard’s corner, said he knew very little about his
fighter’s personal lives and preferred
it that way.
“Ray never mentioned anything,
but I never mingled with anything
to do with a fighter except fighting,”
Dundee said from his Florida home.
“You never wanted personal stuff getting in the way when you sent a kid into
the ring. And as far as I could see, Ray
was as mentally tough as they came.”
As the president of HBO Sports,
Ross Greenburg was involved in the
television negotiations for many of
Leonard’s fights and employed him
as an analyst during Leonard’s retirements, which turned into sabbaticals.
Greenburg said he was aware only of
Leonard’s drug and alcohol use, which
was made public in 1991 when Leonard
responded to a report in The Los Angeles Times culled from records of his
divorce from his first wife, Juanita.

NBA’s next powerful trio resides in Miami

he was ruthless and efficient in

Then he got Bosh, the kind of

Commentary
The
Ancient
World
In the time of
the Emperors, indirect taxes such as
customs duties and
imports were raised
in Rome. Direct taxes
were avoided because
they were seen to be
humiliating and undignified. The Emperors
were able to limit the tax
burden on citizens due to
their control of a vast empire. Revenue was raised
by requisitions imposed on
the colonized who fell beneath the weight of Rome’s
mighty armies. Requisitions obligated new
citizens to assist the state with labour
and property. Occasionally, it was determined that additional monies were required
and a tributary, being a direct tax, was imposed.
There are a number of interesting references to the Roman tax system in
the Gospel of Matthew. This rather haphazard method of tax collection was replaced through Caesar Augustus’ reforms. He created a genuine civil service to
administer his new system, which included a 5% inheritance tax, a 1% sales tax
at auctions and a 4% tax on the sale of slaves.
England – The Medieval Period
In
this
period, the forms of taxation were limited in the extreme. Kings had access
to revenue from three basic sources.
Income flowed from feudal rights and
from Crown property. These two sources were surprisingly considered to provide monarchs with the bulk of the
revenue needed for all expenditures
in normal times (which admittedly
did not exist too often, what with the
propensity of England to make war on
her neighbours). In addition, kings
might elect to raise customs duties
and grants to respond to emergencies. These
levies were subject to Parliamentary approval. Parliament (made
up of land owners and nobles at the time) more often than not resisted giving the
king all that he asked for.
In 1377, Parliament permitted King Richard II the right to level a poll tax of
four old pence on all his adult male subjects. A few years later, he obtained the
ability to institute a graduated poll tax in which subjects with positions were
taxed at higher rates. These measures provoked a rebellion on the part of the
populace and led to widespread evasion. Accordingly, the King was forced to
try again, this time imposing a one shilling (12 pence) tax on all subjects. This
measure was highly regressive and was also widely evaded. Further, it was a
major cause of the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381 and nearly led to the downfall of
King Richard. The unfair economic policies of the monarchy helped spark subversive ideas about the relations between classes in English society. A popular
slogan asked:
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who was then the gentleman?
Assaults on tax officials were common occurrences in southeastern England
at this time. Rebels descended on London from different towns to demand redress for their grievances. After several royal ministers were murdered, hasty
promises were made to the hot-blooded rebels. Once they disbanded, rebel leaders were rounded up and tried. When confronted over his promises made at
Mile End on June 14, 1381, King Richard replied: “Villeins ye are and villeins
ye shall remain.” A number of the ringleaders were beheaded. Given his harsh

and unyielding response to
what were genuine grievances, theatregoers may be
pardoned for not responding too sympathetically
to the entreaty by Shakespeare’s Richard II that we
“sit upon the ground and
tell sad stories of the death
of kings.” Regressive poll
taxes eventually became
less popular as taxation
measures and fell into disuse altogether in 1698.
If we fast forward to
the twentieth century, we
may note that it was unfortunate that one Margaret
Thatcher appears to have skipped an optional course in
English History at university. This might explain why she
introduced a much-despised poll tax in 1989 which contributed greatly to the consensus that it was time for her
to step down as Prime Minister. She retired in 1990.
During the reign of the Stuarts in the seventeenth century, taxation became one of the vital causes of increasing unrest
and polarization in the land. Tax issues were problematic because,
as is now recognized by historians, Stuart kings operated on an insufficient revenue base, given the tax structure which they had inherited.
Eventually King James applied to Parliament for money to finance the
ordinary expenses of governing the country. This set off a furious debate and no
convincing resolution.
Charles I, son of James, discovered that the problem was severe indeed and
had his tax proposals rejected by Parliament. For instance, he was denied the
right to raise revenue through customs duties for life, as was previously the
accepted approach, but was instead granted the duties for a mere 12 months.
Charles responded by proceeding to levy the duties without the consent of Parliament. The stage was set for a civil war of a bloody and ferocious nature. The
result was that Charles was executed in 1649. From that day on, Parliament has
ruled in England, although a limited monarchy was restored in 1660, with the
return to England of Charles’ son, Charles II.
The American Revolution
In the eighteenth century, one of the crucial differences between the British
colonies in American and Canada was in the forceful cry in favour of freedom
from unjust domination by the Mother Country. Certainly, Americans desired
freedom from Britain’s tax scheme. It has been argued that Americans closely
linked their notions of a right to life and liberty to the right to property, because
the latter gave them a measure of independence and the right to vote. Taxes imposed against their property by an assembly -- the British Parliament -- in which
they were not represented was, for many, a form of tyranny. Hence the ultimate
rallying cry: “no taxation without representation.”
Battle lines between colonists and the imperial power were first drawn over
taxes on sugar and on stamps in the 1760s. In a widely-praised pamphlet, a classical scholar and former advocate general of Massachusetts named James Otis
declared that the stamp tax was unconstitutional and “absolutely irreconcilable” with the “rights of the colonists as British subjects and as men.” The result
of the passionate protests that ensued was the resignation of stamp commissioners throughout the colonies and the total failure of Britain to enforce the law.
A few years later, the British Parliament abolished a number of duties and
taxes, except for a symbolic tax on tea. This was retained largely as an assertion
of the right and ability of Parliament to apply taxes to its colonies as a means of
defraying the costs associated with protecting and assisting them. Further, the
tax was accompanied by a plan to ship huge stocks of unsold tea owned by the
East India Company to America at bargain prices.
The plan misfired in spectacular fashion. The colonists considered that they
could not overlook the small tax due to the vital principle at stake. Americans
abstained from drinking tea or continued to purchase contraband Dutch tea. In
the most renowned protest, a group of about 200 Bostonians, poorly disguised
as Mohawk warriors, boarded a tea-laden ship named the Dartmouth, and proceeded to dump the entire shipment into the harbour. Incidentally, one of the
rebels was novelist Herman Melville’s grandfather, Thomas Melville.
The Boston Tea Party, as it has come to be called, had incalculable effects.
In 1774, King George III called for swift retribution and a number of punitive
measures were taken by the British government. This played a significant part
in the transformation of the rebellion into the American Revolution.
What About A
Flat Tax?
Flat tax
A flat tax (short for flat rate tax) is a tax system with a constant tax rate. A flat
tax may also be called a tax in rem (“against the thing”), such as an excise tax on
gasoline of three cents per gallon. Usually the term flat tax refers to household
income (and sometimes corporate profits) being taxed at one marginal rate, in
contrast with progressive or regressive taxes that vary according to parameters
such as income or usage levels. Flat taxes offer simplicity in the tax code, which
has been reported to increase compliance and decrease administration costs.
Flat taxes that allow a tax exemption for household income below a cutoff
level are not true proportional taxes, because, for household incomes below the
cutoff level, taxable income is less than total income.
Flat tax proposals differ in how they define and measure what is subject to
tax.
True flat rate income tax
A true flat rate tax is a system of taxation where one tax rate is applied to all
income with no exceptions.
In an article titled The flat-tax revolution, dated April 14, 2005, The Economist argued as follows: If the goals are to reduce corporate welfare and to enable household tax returns to fit on a postcard, then a true flat tax best achieves
those goals. The flat rate would be applied to all taxable income and profits
without exception or exemption. It could be argued that under such an arrangement, no one is subject to a preferential or “unfair” tax treatment. No industry
receives special treatment, large households are not advantaged at the expense
of small ones, etc. Moreover, the cost of tax filing for citizens and the cost of tax
administration for the government would be further reduced, as under a true
flat tax only businesses and the self-employed would need to interact with the
tax authorities.
Critics of the flat tax argue that the marginal dollar to the low income is
vastly more vital than that of the high income earner, especially around the
poverty level. In their view this justifies a progressive taxation system as the
added income gained from a flat tax rate to the rich would not be spent on vital
goods and services for survival as they might at the poverty level with reduced
taxation. However, true Flat tax proponents necessarily contest the concept of
the diminishing marginal utility of money and that a marginal dollar should be
taxed differently.
Negative income tax
The Negative income tax (NIT), which Milton Friedman proposed in his 1962
book Capitalism and Freedom, is a type of flat tax. The basic idea is the same as
a flat tax with personal deductions, except that when deductions exceed income,
the taxable income is allowed to become negative rather than being set to zero.
The flat tax rate is then applied to the resulting “negative income,” resulting in
a “negative income tax” the government owes the household, unlike the usual
“positive” income tax, which the household owes the government.
For example, let the flat rate be 20%, and let the deductions be $20,000 per
adult and $7,000 per dependent. Under such a system, a family of four making
$54,000 a year would owe no tax. A family of four making $74,000 a year would
owe tax amounting to 0.20 × (74,000 − 54,000) = $4,000, as under a flat tax with
deductions. But families of four earning less than $54,000 per year would owe a
“negative” amount of tax (that is, it would receive money from the government).
For example, if it earned $34,000 a year, it would receive a check for $4,000.
The NIT is intended to replace not just the USA’s income tax, but also many
benefits low income American households receive, such as food stamps and
Medicaid. The NIT is designed to avoid the welfare trap—effective high marginal tax rates arising from the rules reducing benefits as market income rises.
An objection to the NIT is that it is welfare without a work requirement. Those
who would owe negative tax would be receiving a form of welfare without having to make an effort to obtain employment. Another objection is that the NIT
subsidizes industries employing low cost labor, but this objection can also be
made against current systems of benefits for the working poor.

Marginal flat tax
When deductions are allowed a ‘flat tax’ is a progressive tax with the special characteristic that above the maximum deduction, the rate on all further
income is constant. Thus it is said to be marginally flat above that point. To
reconcile the difference between a true flat tax and a marginally flat tax it is
argued that the latter simply excludes certain kinds of funds from being defined
as income.
Flat tax with deductions
U.S. Congressman Dick Armey has advocated a flat tax on all income in excess of an amount shielded by household type and size. For example, draft legislation proposed by Armey would allow married couples filing jointly to deduct
$26,200, unmarried heads of household to deduct $17,200, and single adults,
$13,100. $5,300 would be deducted for each dependent. A household would pay
tax at a flat rate of 17% on the excess. Businesses would pay a flat 17% rate on
all profits. Others have put forth similar proposals with various rates and deductions. Armey defined income to include only salary, wages, and pensions; capital
gains and all other sources of wealth appreciation were excluded from taxation
under his proposal
While campaigning for the American presidency in 1996 and 2000, Steve
Forbes called for replacing the income tax - which would have included a repeal
of the 16th Amendment - by a tax at the flat rate of 17% of consumption, defined
as income minus savings, in excess of an amount determined by the type and
size of the household.[citation needed] For example, the exempt amount for a
family of four would be $42,000 per year.
Modified flat taxes have been proposed which would allow deductions for a
very few items, while still eliminating the vast majority of existing deductions.
Charitable deductions and home mortgage interest are the most discussed exceptions, as these are popular with voters and often used.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
Chrysler introduced two new SRT8 models at the 2011 New York Auto Show,
but the one that jumped out at us the most was the Jeep Grand Cherokee
SRT8. Our apologies to the Chrysler 300 SRT8, but we just like the bigger and
more rugged look a tad better. The new Jeep comes with performance-oriented
styling, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking, and race-inspired
interior.
This monstrous machine is powered by a 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers an
estimated 465 HP and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Coincidentally, it’s the same engine
used in the Chrysler 300 SRT8, but we can fit the kiddies and the dogs in the
back.
“The all-new 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the ultimate performance SUV,
delivering a combination of Jeep capability and utility, world-class performance, luxury and refinement, and advanced innovative technology,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO — Jeep Brand,
Chrysler Group LLC. “Jeep vehicles have long been known for their off-road capability. In addition to Jeep four-wheel-drive
traction and utility, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 takes capability to a new level by giving driving enthusiasts extreme performance for the street and track.”

These are not street dogs. They are pets
on a gated, private driveway that leads
to an imposing mansion on a tree-lined
hillside above downtown Tijuana. The
dogs and the gate are there either to
protect the house from the world outside, or to protect the world outside
from what’s inside the house.
The house belongs to Jorge Hank
Rhon, the 48-year-old presidente municipal, or mayor, of Tijuana, who also
happens to be one of the richest and
most scandal-laden men in Mexico. Besides owning Tijuana’s Pueblo Amigo
hotel and shopping center, Hank (his
paternal last name) heads up Grupo
Caliente, a gambling and gaming empire encompassing the Agua Caliente
racetrack in Tijuana and a string of
off-track “sports book” betting parlors
throughout Mexico. He is also one of
the leading traffickers in exotic, endangered animals.
Hank lives in the house with his
third wife, Maria Elvia Amaya de
Hank, a fixture of Tijuana’s social elite.
Some have nicknamed him Genghis
Hank, and her Hankita Péron.
The house is perched at the top of
Hank’s private compound. Below lies
the Agua Caliente racetrack, which
Hank took over in the ’80s, long after
its Prohibition-era heyday as a southof-the-border Hollywood escape. Between the track and the residence lies
Hank’s bucolic personal playground,
which includes a bullring and a sprawling private zoo that houses an estimated 20,000 animals. Many of them are
caged down in the track’s infield, where
they go unnoticed by the Tijuana locals and Tecate-clutching gringos who
shout numbers like desperate pleas at
the sprinting greyhounds. Once a year,
Hank hosts a special race and lets his
private stash of miniature monkeys
ride the dogs like jockeys.
Next to the track’s main building is
what the groundskeepers call “la capilla,” the chapel. Inside, there is nothing to worship — just dank, humid air
hovering over a tiled floor, terrariums
housing rare birds and a catatonic leopard that paces back and forth. A statue
of a resting greyhound watches over
the room.
The grounds of the zoo continue up
the hill with an extensive aviary and a
series of stables where camels and llamas walk in circles. There are also lions, jaguars, cougars, grizzly bears, ostriches and white Bengal tigers, Hank’s
most controversial animal. Only 500
white tigers exist in the world and Hank
owns three of them. In 1991, a white tiger cub born in Hank’s zoo was found
by customs agents in the back seat of a
Mercedes-Benz on its way back into Tijuana from the U.S., where it had made
an appearance at a birthday party for
Hank’s niece. Hank was not in the car
and claimed no knowledge of the visit,
but was still hit with a $25,000 fine for
smuggling and possessing an endangered species.

FRANK SINATRA AND THE MOB
Tina Sinatra: Mob Ties Aided JFK Legendary crooner Frank Sinatra
served as a liaison between John F. Kennedy’s 1960 campaign for president and
mobster Sam Giancana in a scheme to use Mafia muscle to deliver union votes,
Sinatra’s daughter tells 60 Minutes.
The late singer’s youngest daughter, Tina, also describes her father’s final
years and his work for the Central Intelligence Agency. The interview will be
rebroadcast on Dec. 31.
Tina Sinatra, 52, says her father told her that Kennedy patriarch Joseph P.
Kennedy wanted the Mafia’s help in delivering the union vote in the 1960 West
Virginia primary, in which John Kennedy, then a U.S. senator, faced Sen. Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota. The elder Kennedy asked Frank Sinatra to make
a request to then-Chicago crime boss Sam Giancana.
Sinatra was approached “because (Kennedy) knew dad had access to Sam
Giancana,” Tina said.
“It would be in Jack Kennedy’s best interest if his father did not make the
contact directly…Dad was on an errand,” she tells Correspondent Steve Kroft.
Giancana told Frank Sinatra he would do it, telling the singer, according to
his daughter, “It’s a couple of phone calls.”
Soon after Kennedy won the tight race for president, the deal brokered by
Sinatra came back to haunt him when the Kennedy administration cracked
down on the Mafia—an effort led by Robert Kennedy, the president’s brother
and attorney general.
Tina says her father told her how he assuaged an angry Giancana.
“Sam was saying, ‘That’s not right. You know he owes me,’ he meaning Joe
Kennedy, and dad, I think, said, ‘No, I owe you. I asked for the favor,’” recalls
Tina.
To repay the favor, Tina says, Frank Sinatra “…went to Chicago and played
in (Giancana’s) club, the Villa Venice.” Sinatra brought “Rat Packers” Sammy
Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin with him and played two shows for eight straight
nights.
Tina says her father also claimed to have served as a courier for the CIA.
“Because (he) controlled his own air travel…(the CIA) would ask him and
many others with that capacity to courier a body—a living person, you know, not
a corpse, but a diplomat—or…papers.”
Sinatra never revealed who or what he was transporting.
“We asked him,” says Tina. “He didn’t (tell us).”
Sinatra’s friendship with President Kennedy was well
known, and allegations of his connections to the Mafia are
not new.
Central to those rumors is Judith Exner, the Giancana
and Sinatra girlfriend who has claimed she engaged in a
long love affair with President Kennedy, which could have
compromised the government’s attack on the mob.
After the actor and entertainer died at age 82 in May,
1998 the FBI released nearly 1,300 pages of information it accumulated over 40
years of investigating the man known as “Old Blue Eyes” and “The Chairman
of the Board.”
The FBI probed allegations that Sinatra had bught his way out of the draft
in World War II—he turned out to have had a perforated ear drum—and considered bugging his home, but didn’t under orders from bureau head Edgar Hoover.
The agents never found evidence of a crime in his mob connections.
The FBI also investigated supposed communist leanings on Sinatra’s part,
citing his appearance at union rallies and his progressive views on race.
For his part, Sinatra maintained in an exclusive CBS interview with Walter
Cronkite that his mob connections were just part of being an entertainer.
“In theatrical work, in nightclub work, in concerts. So, wherever I might be.
In restaurants, you meet all kinds of people, so that there’s really not much to be
said about that,” Frank Sinatra said. “And I think the less the better.”
Frank Sinatra kept performing late into his life, even as old age robbed him
of his ability to sing and remember lyrics to his signature songs, and even as his
daughter begged him to stop.
He told his daughter he had to keep singing to keep earning more money.
Dementia and physical illness made Frank Sinatra weak in his final years.
“The older he got, the more sickly he became, the less he enjoyed his life.
None of us thought he would become that frail,” Tina says. “It’s funny how you
delude yourself.”
When he died, says Tina, “I think he was unhappy, I think he was tired and
I think he was ready.”
True Crimes
The KFC murders were an armed robbery and mass
murder which took place at a KFC restaurant in Kilgore,
Texas in 1983. For over two decades it was among the
most tragic unsolved murder cases in Texas history.
On the evening of September
23, 1983, just before the restaurant
closed, armed robbers held up the
KFC in Kilgore. The five people in
the restaurant at the time (who were
either employees of the restaurant or
were waiting for someone there) were
abducted, taken to a nearby field, and
each executed in the back of the head
with the exception of the manager who
ran and was also shot in the head.
The victims’ bodies were discovered by local police and Texas Rangers, and were identified as: David
Maxwell (20), Joey Johnson (20), Monty Landers (19),
Mary Tyler (37) and Opie Hughes (38).
For 22 years, the case remained unsolved; several
people were arrested and one person, James Earl
Mankins, Jr., an individual with prior drug convictions who was also the son of a State Representative, was charged with the murders, but was later
released after the beginning of pre-trial proceedings due to a lack of evidence.
Finally, in November 2005, two men (already
in prison for other crimes) were arrested and
charged: Cousins Darnell Hartsfield (44) and Romeo Pinkerton (47). At the time of arrest, Hartsfield was serving a life sentence for aggravated
perjury in connection with the case. Since they
have been charged with capital murder, Hartsfield and
Pinkerton could receive the death penalty if convicted.
Jury selection in Pinkerton’s trial began August 6, 2007 in New Boston
Jury selection was completed September 27, 2007. Pinkerton’s death penalty trial was scheduled to
start at 9 a.m. on October 15, 2007 at the Bowie County Courthouse in New Boston.
Pinkerton plead guilty to five lesser counts of first degree murder on October 29, 2007. He received five concurrent life
sentences as a part of his plea deal.

Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the
United States (1981–1989), the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975) and prior to that,
a radio, film and television actor.
Reagan was born in Tampico in Whiteside County, Illinois, reared in Dixon in Lee County, Illinois, and educated at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in economics and sociology. Upon his graduation, Reagan first moved to Iowa to
work as a radio broadcaster and then in 1937 to Los Angeles, California. He began a career
as an actor, first in films and later television, appearing in over 50 movie productions and
earning enough success to become a famous, publicly recognized figure.
Reagan left office in 1989. In 1994, the former president disclosed that he had been
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age
of 93. He ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents, and is a conservative icon.
