in jersey herd.
There has been a cut back in the number of weeks paid
surf lifeguards will be on duty at Bream Bay’s beaches
this summer.
Paid surf lifeguards will only be on patrol at the Ruakaka Surf lifesaving Club for two weeks and for three
weeks at Waipu Cove. Volunteer guards provide the
service over weekends.
Last year the paid guards were present for four weeks
at both Ruakaka and Waipu Cove and also at Whangarei Heads, which will also just get two weeks of paid
guards this year.
Hayden Rawcliffe, finance officer for Northern Surf
Lifesaving Incorporated, said the cut back is because
the Whangarei District Council has failed to provide
the funds needed to pay the lifeguards.
The WDC in fact increased its funding to Surf Lifesaving from $19,300 to $19.900 this year. This however,
was well short of the request for $53,427, which was
made to the Council by Northern Surf Lifesaving.
Asked how it was possible to fund four weeks of guards
last summer, Mr. Rawcliffe said the Council grant was
supplemented with funds from the Oxford Trust, which
distributes money raised from gaming machines. However, this year Surf Lifesaving NZ decided that district
councils should fund the total amount needed for the
paid lifeguards.
“After all we are providing a service in their districts”,
said Mr. Rawcliffe.
Asked why Waipu Cove gets three weeks of paid lifeguards while Ruakaka only gets two, he said this decision was based on hazards at the beach and the number

Tensions are high among the jersey herd of Waipu Sharemilkers Daniel and Freya Lynch. The Lynches
have been asked to participate in The Grand Pageant of Waipu, along with their four children and one of
their pedigree jersey cows, to recreate a scene about a family supplying the Waipu Butter Factory. With
no acting experience, and even less in their herd, the Lynches broke the news to their 400 cows.
Excitement soon spread over the farm as the best bovine hooves were put forward vying for the leading

Keep it simple
There were two comparative shopping lists for
Christmas dinner in the Saturday Herald this week.
One added up to nearly $1,000 and had as its piece de
reisitance a turkey, stuffed with a duck, which was in
turn stuffed with a chicken.
To my puritan soul this seems totally ridiculous and
ostentatious. I don’t think it would even taste that good
– all that poultry meat. I like the contrasting taste of the
sage bread stuffing and the chicken.
They did this kind of thing in Medieval times in
Europe. While most of the population suffered
recurring famines, the lords and ladies feasted on geese
stuffed with pheasant, stuffed with chicken, stuffed
with partridge, stuffed with quail, stuffed with lark. It
sounds disgusting.
Are we returning to those barbaric times when the
devisions in wealth were so marked? Many of our
ancestors came to New Zealand to escape this kind of
society.
This Christmas my guiding principle is going to be
“keep it simple.”
The main aim is to make sure everyone who comes
for Christmas dinner enjoys themselves. If you get too
tired and stressed you can’t look after people properly.
I will try not to overdo the present buying as well. I

think in past years I must have wasted hundreds of
dollars on presents people didn’t really need or want.
It’s been a busy year and I am looking forward to a
break. I am hoping for a day when I can take a sun
umbrella and a good book down to the beach and stay
there for several hours. I had my first swim in the sea
for this summer two days ago. The water was cold at
first but not too bad once I got under.
I am getting Christmas cards and emailed Christmas
newsletters from friends who have spent the year having
adventures in exotic places all around the world. It is
easy to become envious and to think my life is a bit
boring. It’s a bad habit to make these comparisons. My
life is good enough. The beach is five minutes down
the road. The sweet peas are blooming and (if we can
beat the birds to them) the strawberries are as red and
sweet as they have ever been in my garden. I earn an
honest living and I get two whole weeks holiday at
Christmas time.
Happy Christmas to all Bream Bay News readers. I
hope you manage to avoid spending too much money,
to have a restful holiday and can find the secret of how
to keep things nice and simple.

A community celebration
Over 200 people had dinner together and then sang
Christmas carols at the
One Tree Point Lifepoint
Church party held on Friday 14 December.
Pastor Simon Currie said
”It is all about the community coming together
to celebrate the year. A lot
of good things have happened and we need to celebrate them. It is not just
for kids but for all ages.”
He gave credit to Norma
Pyle, who he said is “the
key organiser” of the free
event.
The night ended with
children and adults alike
reaching for sparkling
strips of coloured paper
fired onto the dance floor Petra Currie, aged 8, and Olivia Pascoe aged 2 and a half, join in with the carol
singing at the Lifepoint Church Christmas Party
from two toy cannons.

Myra hoping to be back in Whangarei
for Christmas
Myra van den Bergen has had to put the exciting plans she had
for her first year after leaving college on hold after being crushed
by a half tonne log and suffering multiple broken bones during
her first week at work barcoding logs at Northport.
Myra was a year 13 student at Bream Bay College this year and
the stevedoring was a holiday job. She had just sent off her application to Camp America thinking she would spend a year travelling before settling down to a university degree.
Myra’s friend Paige Carter said her plans were on hold but not
abandoned and she was sure she would be taking them up again
as soon as she is well enough to do so
Myra’s fellow students have been visiting her in hospital and
keeping in touch with how she is doing on facebook. She spent
an hour on Sunday looking through all their messages on her
father Fulco’s Iphone and managed a smile.
“The sense of community at that school is just fantastic”, said
Fulco.
He said it is likely Myra will be well enough to be transferred
back to Whangarei Hospital before Christmas.
A safety officer from the Ministry of Business Inovation and Employment is investigating the accident and will issue an official
report.

Ambition for Grand Pageant Sad end to day at the beach
to cover costs
In reference to your recent article - at no stage have I
ever articulated that I was confident that we would sell
8000 tickets to the Grand Pageant of Waipu.
The natural amphitheatre at the Glebe could potentially
seat up to 4,000 people and it is credible that sometime
in the future according to the plan that the Pageant
should be performed every ten years, that we should
attract audiences of this size.
Our ambition for these two performances is that we
cover our costs. The Museum is essentially a nonprofit organization – our vision statement requires us
to preserve the history, the genealogical records and
the artifacts from the Great Migration. Our cultural
role in the community we take very seriously and see
that we can play an important part in bringing visitors
to the area to help local businesses survive and to
help maintain Waipu’s unique characteristics. Any
community with a great story has a sense of pride and
togetherness.
We are hoping that we will be supported in the
incredibly ambitious venture of the Grand Pageant. It
is the largest theatrical event of its kind ever staged
outside of an urban centre. The visual effects have
to be seen to be believed. The whole project is about
maintaining Waipu’s point of difference, its special
identity and about celebrating the values of cooperation, interdependence and love of community.
If by chance we are lucky enough to make any profit, it
will enable us to keep all this kind of thing happening
and to keep the Museum and Information Centre
operating.

Five year old Oliver Turner suffered burns to both his
feet from the remains of a fire which was left smouldering on Ruakaka Surf Beach
The thoughtless actions of a person or group of people,
have left a fun-loving 5 year old in pain and feeling
pretty bad about ever going to the Ruakaka Surf Beach
again.
On Sunday the 9th December we were enjoying a beautiful morning on the beach with our grandson Oliver,
we weren’t the only ones, the beach was filling up fast
with families and the little Nippers from the Surf Club.
Oliver was chasing his ball around and stood in the unseen smouldering remains of a fire. The resultant burns
were excruciating and require ongoing treatment.
We are not against you having fun and even having a
bonfire on the beach, but please, please be responsible
for your actions and make sure it is “dead and buried”
before you leave.

Coronation Hall stage 1
renovations completed
The first stage of the Waipu Hall renovation is completed .
The hall now has a new kitchen, restrooms and bar.
Juanita McGoldrick and Jill Mutch of the Waipu Joint Venture Group, which
organized all this work commented “the hall is so heavily used, it was difficult to
schedule work, but the results are worth it.”
“Builder Marcus Jones, plumber Alwyn Jones, electrician Neil McLeod and their
teams have produced a great transformation. Paul Wickham, Gary Sandford and
Brian Donaldson also contributed hugely to the finished result, with the donation of
the beautiful timber bar top and the kitchen extractor hood.”
The final cost of this work was $177,000, with Pub Charity contributing $92,400,
Whangarei Distirct Council - $20,000 and the balance coming from Waipu Joint
Venture and Waipu Hall Committee funds.

Lets all unite - a message from Mr. Dot
Com
Thanks again for your continued efforts on behalf of our wonderful community.
Here is my latest contribution.
“Let’s get together, let’s all unite. Or they will do what ever they like.”
I believe there is some wisdom to be found in Mr. Dotcom’s lyrics. And I see it as
an opportunity and a challenge.
Maybe it is time for humanity to finally grow up and be responsible and caring for
ourselves and our actions.
Option 1. We continue to have ‘stuff’ with each other and government continues
to write more and more legislation and rules and guidelines and employ more and
more police and officialdom and armies to enforce these rules and guidelines until
eventually our children forget nature and who they really are and realise they are
basically just money making machines to pay for all the control that needs to take
place.
Or Option 2, we get over ourselves and realise we are all just unique individual
expressions of exactly the same thing: humanity, that is experiencing this reality
from our own unique perspective, in order to flourish and grow, just like the rest of
nature does, and eventually our kids will realise that computer games and nic nacs
and gadgets were fun for a while, but there is absolutely no man made gadget that
could ever hope to compete, with the wonder and fulfillment that nature provides
for us. So come on guys (and girls of course). Lets get together lets all unite. Or
they will do what ever they like

Bream Bay.
Just four submissions and all of them in support
were received by the Ministry of Primary Industries on the Patuharakeke Iwi Trust Board’s proposal to extend the ban on taking pipi from Marsden Bank (at the northern end of Bream Bay) for
a further two year period.
A current ban, placed at the beginning of 2011, is
due to expire in February 2013. A survey carried
out on the bank in April 2012 by members of the
Patuharakeke iwi as well as scientists from NIWA
showed that while there has been some recruitment of juvenile pipi to the bed, these don’t seem
to be growing to any size.
Juliane Chetham, of the Patuharakeke board, said
the board is in discussion with various interested
parties about funding research to try to find out
what the problem could be. There is anecdotal
evidence of die back on Mair Bank, which lies
just off shore from Marsden Bank as well.
For many years Mair and Marsden Banks have
been an abundant source of pipi. Because of its
ease of access Marsden Bank in particular has
been an important gathering spot for local people.
Thirty years ago pipi were harvested commercially from Marsden Bank and, more recently, Mair
Bank has supported a commercial harvesting operation.
A decision on whether the ban on taking pipi from
Marsden Bank will be extended is expected early
in 2013.

role. The familiar “don’t call us, we’ll call you” broke many acting dreams, and
left a sour taste in many of the cows’ four stomachs. When asked what qualities he
was looking for, pageant director Lachie McLean, said he wanted a cow that would
share the limelight with the Lynch family and remember its one very important line
– “moo”. The scene overlaps with a scene involving the Waipu Pipe Band. This
filtered through the audition line and caused all sorts of confusion as some of the
cows turned up with their own version of the Highland Fling – called the Lowland
Swing.
“This became a bit messy” said Freya “as many of the cows had held their milk
that morning due to nerves and on relaxing the full uddered cows let a spray of milk
cover themselves, the stage and most of the director.”
Daniel added “Lachie voiced his disgust and nearly resorted to hiring one of his
own jersey cows instead. He expected more from pedigrees. It’s a family show
after all. It was an awkward situation made worse when those next in queue got
very nervous and evacuated their bowels.”
Finally they were able to make a shortlist comprising of cows 1 and 259. Both
very talented actors. “Cow 259 is our top BW cow” said Freya “We are hoping the
experience will add to her traits other than production ranking”. “Cow number 1
is much older but perhaps just too relaxed” worried Daniel “We’d hate for her to
decide to have a nap halfway through the scene”
The two cows are currently udder deep in workshopping rehearsals with the Waipu
Pipe Band and a final decision on which cow will accompany the family will be
made early next year.
When interviewed Cow 1 said “There aren’t many roles out there for middle - aged
cows. I auditioned for the Hobbit but they only wanted horses. Robyn Malcolm said
they weren’t breaking any laws but I still think it was bigotry towards bovines.”
Cow 259 was more frank about her prospects “I really want this part, it’s like it was
written for me. I’ve told Lachie I’m willing to go topless, but full nudity is out of
the question, well maybe if it was tasteful or I was paid more.”
A final word from Daniel sums up his dilemma “They tell you never to work with
animals or children – they told us too late.”

Ruakaka South Sewer Extension
The Decommissioning team vacuuming and sanitizing an old septic tank in Bream Bay Drive.’
Work is progressing well on the $9.4 million Ruakaka South Sewer Scheme Extension designed to protect the environment and improve public health in the area.
The system will pump wastewater from 470 individual properties to the Ruakaka
Waste Water Treatment Plant which will be upgraded to handle the increased
volume of wastewater.
PROGRESS IN AREA 6 (Beach area)
Our teams are diligently connecting properties to the new system. We have well over
80 properties connected to the new system to date. The teams are now decommissioning the old septic tanks and commencing final reinstatement of disturbed areas.
This will mean some properties may have freshly reinstated areas over Christmas.
Any properties that are not completed may have a small amount of backfill material, surplus from the tank installation that will remain until after Christmas.
If you wish to have your septic tank decommissioned after Christmas, please contact Jody at the Ruakaka Site to make the appropriate arrangements. All properties
hooked up to the new system have had user manuals delivered to their property
address. You can view this document by visiting: http://www.wdc.govt.nz/WaterandWaste/Wastewater/Documents/Ruakaka-System-Homeowners-Guide.pdf
or for general info; http://www.wdc.govt.nz/WaterandWaste/Wastewater/Pages/
Ruakaka-South-Sewer-Extension.aspx
PROGRESS IN AREA 1 (Ruakaka Bridge to Seaview Rd)
The Domestic Pump Station installations have started and will generally proceed in a
southerly direction. Over 30 Tanks have been installed in this area. Testing and connection to the new reticulation system is expected to commence in the New Year.
PROGRESS IN AREA 2 & 3 (Seaview Rd to Princes Rd)
The drilling of the street mains has commenced and will generally proceed in a southerly direction on the eastern seaward side first. Drilling operations should be completed by January. There may be minor disruption to traffic as the drilling operation
moves along Marsden Point Rd, but two lanes should be able to be maintained.
PROGRESS IN AREA 4 & 5 (Princes Rd to Camellia Ave)
The drilling of the street mains has commenced and will generally proceed in a
southerly direction on the eastern seaward side first. Drilling operations should
be completed by January.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Residents are reminded to return their signed Physical Work Consent forms to the
Project Office as soon as possible. Physical Work Consent forms and information
required to schedule site meetings have now been sent out to owners of all properties to be connected to the new scheme. Completion of the Physical Work Consent
forms is essential before any project staff can enter any property to install sewer
equipment on your property.
We will be closing the works on the project from 21 December and return to work
on 7 January.
If you see any area where we can improve the safety for both our teams and the general public, please contact the Site Office on 0800 Rua-Sewer or 0800 782-73937.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ruakaka Community for
working with us to deliver this exciting community project. Our teams have received lots of positive feedback. We all know that construction works can cause
community anxiety and frustration at times. We hope we have minimised the effects and duration of any disruption to you all.
We wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year and look forward
to being part of your community next year. Be Safe.

Too busy to worry too much
about what they lost in the fire
David and Hope Baker,
whose home alongside
State Highway One
Waipu was destroyed
in a fire on 1 December,
are both working hard
at their Marsden Cove
Waterline business and
say they haven’t had
too much time to get
too miserable about
their loss.
David said last week,
“It is the busiest time of
the year for us and it has
David and Hope Baker with daughter Olivia.
been a bit hard sorting
out insurance claims and all those things. We will just get through the summer and
then think about what we are going to do about the house.
In the meantime the family has rented a fully furnished home in One Tree Point.
David said he went through the remains at the house the weekend following the fire
and was pleased to find some photo albums.
“They were a bit singed around the edges but basically OK. It was quite surprising
what survived the fire and what didn’t.”
The couple continue to be grateful for the many offers of help they have received.
David said, “We are very grateful to everyone but it is getting a bit embarrassing.
Compared to many families we are not too badly off. We were fully insured and we
have our business to keep us occupied.”
He suggests that if anyone wants to offer further help they should make a donation
to one of the local fire brigades.
David confirmed that the cause of the fire seems to have been an electrical fault
in the fridge - freezer. This appliance was only four years old and of one of the
major whiteware brands. He is reluctant to name which brand without conclusive
evidence of the fault.

Raffle to help after house fire
The Waipu Hammer Hardware shop is running a raffle to raise funds to help David
and Hope Baker, the young couple whose home at State Highway 1, Waipu burned
down in a fire on 1 December.
The raffle prize is a barrow full of security products including fire alarms and fire
extinguishers. Tickets cost $5 and the draw will be made on Christmas Eve.
Coralie Roberts, who with her husband Bruce, owns the Hammer Hardware business,
said Bruce’s grandparents lost their home, the family’s homestead in Shultz Rd., in
a fire.
“Although they were insured, as David and Hope were, it was a very difficult time
for them. The insurance can replace the beds and the fridge and things like that but
it is all the little things that are lost that can make life quite hard.”

The stairs at the beach beside the Marsden Power Station
site, which were damaged last month by what appeared
to be a deliberately lit fire have been repaired.
Lynnie Gibson, in charge of community relations with
the Department of Conservation’s Whangarei Area
Office, said, “The Department prioritised this work and
moved quickly on it due to the upcoming Christmas
break.
“It’s always disappointing having to spend time and
money repairing vandalised structures. This particular
job has cost the Department approximately $1,000.”
The retired people who keep a watch on the stairs and
regularly clean graffiti from them are wondering how
long the repairs will last this time.
Don Robertson in charge of visitor assets for DOC
Whangarei Area Office said he is very grateful for the
help of this group. “They do a fantastic job.”

The new Waipu craft co-op.
Craft co-op members from left back: Julie Lewis, Jo May, Rodney Brine, France Prévost,
Heather Morrison and Sharon Smith. In front: Jo Keith left and Amber O”Neill.
When the Waipu Lotto shop moved into the Waipu Post Shop, business owner Brendan Park
was left with a lease on an empty shop through to March 2013. A bit of a problem until Jo
Keith, who runs the Eye Spy second hand, hand made crafts, interesting things shop in the old
Waipu Fire Station, came up with a bright idea – How about a craft co-op?
The idea seems to have taken off. The co-op now has 13 members all helping to pay the rent
and the shop is open seven days from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Co-op members take turns behind the
counter. Things were slow for the first couple of weeks but in the lead up to Christmas sales
have been good.
Rodney Brine, who lives in Ruakaka, and makes wooden garden people, garden stakes and
retro styled children’s wooded desks found quite a few of his items had sold when he called in
for a weekly Tuesday afternoon co-op meeting last week. Julie Lewis specialises in 70s style
tie - dyeing and sorted through the racks to see which sizes are running low in her range of
bright dye splattered tee shirts.
Artist Jo May spent the winter in America and has had to work hard to build up her range of
richly coloured, nature themed prints and original silk paintings. Their presence on the walls
enlivens the shop space.
Also at the meeting were: Amber O’Neill who creates garden sculptures in wire netting or
stacked cups and saucers strung together on wire and leaning crazily, Heather Morrison, who
sews children’s clothing: hats and bonnets and tiny cotton tee shirts printed with bird and
dolphin shapes (she also has a line in flower essences), France Prévost who makes a range
of skin care and aromatherapy products, Sharon Smith, who knits copper wire and gemstones
together into jewellery pieces and Jo, the master recycler, sews old vinyl records into handbags,
woollen blankets into fashion garments and lace tablecloths into elegant dresses.
A recent addition to the shop are the last remaining of the Waipu Tiles which are no longer in
production since the retirement of tile maker Rod Bowey.
Other members of the co-op are: airbrush artist Colin Unkovich, woodturners Dennis and
Robyn McCartain, glass bead maker Karen Irwin and Jenny Pike who makes leather purses.
One corner of the shop is dedicated to fishing gear – a left over from the previous lotto, fishing
supplies, stationery and gift business. It’s a bit incongruous but co-op members have found
its presence helpful as it provides something of interest to men while their wives and partners
peruse the craft.
No decision has been made yet about whether the Waipu craft co-op group will renew the lease
when it runs out but Jo says this is a possibility. First they will see how the summer goes.

The Helen McGregor Memorial piping medley
If you like bagpipe music with flair
“Helen liked the flairy pipe music and a piping
medley was an idea se came up with before she died”,
said Bain McGregor, Chief of the Waipu Caledonian
Society and husband of the late Helen McGregor,
popular highland dancing teacher and former editor
of the Bream Bay News, who died in 2003 of breast
cancer.
This year’s Helen McGregor Memorial Piping
Medley will be held in the Waipu Coronation Hall on
New Year’s Eve starting at 7pm. New Zealand’s best
young pipers will be there, competing for the Helen
McGregor Memorial Trophy and showing off their
expertise and the dexterity of their fingers.
“It’s a young man’s game” said Bain who is Pipe
Major with the Whangarei Pipe Band.
Each player has up to eight minutes to play whatever
they like. They usually start slowly with sliding
slippery notes and build up to a crescendo right at
the top of their abilities.
“We have some fantastic young pipers coming on in
New Zealand. We are fast catching up to Scotland
with some of the best pipers in the world”, said
Bain.
One to watch out for this year is Stuart Easton of
Palmerston North. Last year’s winner Martin Frewen
will be sitting on the judges’ panel.
“We would love to see more members of the public
there. The bar will be open and it’s a chance to hear
pipe music like you have never heard it before.”
Big day at the Ruakaka
Races
The Ruakaka Races on 3rd January features both gallops

with competitions and activities, the Volcano run slide,
bouncy castle and face painting. You can bring your
togs and head to the beach to cool off - the Ruakaka
Surf Life Saving Patrol will be on duty from 12pm.
There will be live music from Ben and Tau playing
in the ‘Gravel Bar’ between races, local food will be
available in the food court, or bring a picnic. Ballistic
Blondes will be skydiving onto the track around 5pm,
and the Monsta screen TV will be on site so you can
get a close up view of the racing.Free return buses
will be running from Whangarei City, Waterline Café
at Marsden Cove and Ruakaka Beach Motor Camp.

The orchestra and choir which each year come together
to take part in the Waipu Christmas Carol service
are going to be holding a similar service this year in
Whangarei.
On Saturday 22 December at 11am the carol service
will be held at the bridge by the town basin.
Lachie McLean, who normally organises and directs
the Waipu service, is preoccupied this year with the
Waipu Grand Pageant but said he has had many people
tell him how much they will miss the Waipu carols and
wants to let these people know that they can join with
the orchestra and choir at the Whangarei service on
Saturday.

Malcolm Sandford spends many hours each week mowing the park with the Caledonian Society’s Ford tractor
In February next year Malcolm Sandford will have
been mowing the grass and keeping things tidy at the
Waipu Caledonian Park for 12 years.
“It was old Barley McKay who got me into it. When
I retired from the farm and moved down to Waipu to
live he came to see me and asked if I could help out
with the park. He said there was a tractor and a mower.
It took me about three days to mow it that first time, it
had got that bad.”
How long does it take now?
“If nobody comes to talk to me I get it done in about
four and a half hours.”
The park is approximately seven hectares in size.
Then there’s the mowing with the drive - on around
the buildings and the weed - eating around the fence
posts. He fights a constant battle with kikuyu.
“I hate the stuff”, he says.
Sometimes Malcolm spends five hours a week at the
park, sometimes 20.
At present he is working hard to have the grounds
looking their best for the Waipu Highland Games on
1 January.
Last week he had the field fertilised with lime and
superphosphate.
“It was a nice still morning but, would you believe
it, just as the truck arrived a breeze came up. A few
people had their windows open in Argyle Street. I
wasn’t very popular.”
He is hoping for a good downpour to green things up
between now and Christmas.
Malcolm worries about the advancing age of all the
people involved in the Waipu Caledonian Society, the
“Callies” as he calls them.
“Most of us are over 70 or close to it. We had a bit of
a working bee the other day and everyone who turned
up was close to 80. The younger ones just don’t seem
interested. In ten years time, if something doesn’t
change, they will be in real trouble.”
“We are really lucky to have this park in the middle of
Waipu. Many people don’t realise, it doesn’t belong to
the Council but to the Caledonian Society.”
He enjoys seeing children using the park, kicking a
rugby or soccer ball around, but is astounded at all the
items of clothing they leave behind.
“I am always picking up jumpers, pairs of shoes and
hats. I put them on the fence over by the rugby club
hoping someone will come and get them.”
The Rugby club causes him a few problems too, but
Malcolm remains good-natured about it all.
“Whenever they have a match here, I have to go around
picking up mouth guards and bottles and cans. Boys
will be boys, I suppose.”
Between his work at the park, playing bowls and
helping his son Wayne on his farm, Malcolm keeps
pretty active for a seventy – six–year–old. He says he
is working harder now than when he was on the farm
full time, but he enjoys his life.
His wife Val said “he is a man who has to have
something to do.”
He has worked hard pretty much all his life.
He was born in Sandford Rd. in Ruakaka – “So I
haven’t moved very far.”
His father share - milked on a farm in Ferry Road before
purchasing one of his own in Finlayson Brooke Road.
“That was a pretty tough farm back then. To start with
we only had about thirty acres in grass and there were
no fences. You couldn’t leave a cow in one place and
be sure it would be there in the morning. Dad would
get a phone call from the bloke who had taken over
in Ferry Rd to say he had just milked 40 of his cows.
They would all walk down the road back to the old
farm because we had no grass.”
Malcolm worked on the farm with his father.
“Until I was 21 years old I never got a wage. I would be
working from early morning until after dark, even after
I was married. If I hadn’t come home Val would come
out to find me and, if she could hear the tractor running,
she would know I was alright. But it all worked out in
the end.”
Malcolm inherited the farm and now it has passed on to
his son. He is pleased Wayne has stayed to become the
third generation to work that land.
At this year’s Waipu Highland Games on 1 January,
Malcolm will be presented with a pewter quaich (cup)
in recognition of all his work for the Waipu Caledonian
Society.

Heavyweight competitors line up to toast the caber at the 2011 Highland Games
On 1st January 2013, the Waipu Caledonian Society Inc. will be staging its 142nd Highland
Games celebrating the beginning of the New Year as it has done since 1871.
Competitors from all over New Zealand attend the games to contest the piping,
fiddling, drumming, highland dancing, athletics and heavyweight field events. All
are dressed in kilts.
“They see the games as an opportunity to share their Clan heritage and genealogy
with the public and to keep their Scottish traditions alive,” says society secretary,
Annie Everson-Dawn
More than a dozen Clans, along with approximately 3,000 plus visitors, are expected
to attend. The Host Clan for the 2013 Games is Clan Fergusson.
The Waipu Highland Games are the largest Highland Games in New Zealand. The
International Highland Games Association voted the Waipu Highland Games as the
best of its kind in the world. It is the home of the Annual New Zealand Heavyweight
Championships. The New Zealand Champion for the last 15 years has been Pat
Hellier who will be back to defend his title this year.
Each Clan society attending has a tent in the Avenue of the Clans and members of
the public are invited to learn about the history of the Clan they are connected to.
The Waipu informal Genealogy Group and the Whangarei Family History group
will also be there, with information available to anyone who is interested in tracing
their family heritage.
At 9.30am the Highland Games will start with an official morning parade - a
procession of the Clans down the main street of Waipu. The Clans then march onto
the Waipu Caledonian Park and the Game’s events begin. The procession is led by
the Waipu Pipe Band.
At 12.15pm pipers will assemble for the massed pipe band. Meanwhile the dancers
line up for the massed Highland Fling.
This will be followed by the official opening, by the Mayor of Whangarei, Morris
Cutforth. The Host Clan Trophy will be presented by the President of Clan Stewart,
Trevor Stewart, to Clan Fergusson. The Quaich (cup) for services to the Caledonian
Society will be presented to Malcolm Sandford for his 12 years dedication to the job
of looking after the Caledonian park.
In addition to the competitions mentioned above throughout the afternoon there will
be a fiddling competition, a tartan fashion competition and running races and relays
for children. The Waipu Scottish Country Dancing club will be inviting people to
join in and learn dance steps with them on a stage near the St Marys Rd. entrance
to the park.
The Games come to an end about 5.00pm, followed by the annual
Ceilidh (pronounced ‘Kaylee’) or dance at 7pm in the Waipu Coronation Hall with
the Twisty Willow Celtic Band.
The mottos of the Waipu Caledonian Society are: ‘Tirnam Beann’s nam Gleann’s
nam Gaisgeach - The country of the mountains, the glens and the heroes. and‘Nemo
Me Impune Lacessit - No one injures me with impunity’, which society members say
reflect the spirit and the family fun of the games.

The Waipu Boat & Fishing Club would like to wish its sponsors and the Waipu
Community a merry Christmas, and thank you for all your support during the
year. Our most recent competition held during Labour weekend was a great
success with twice as many tickets being sold than in recent years, and with the
generosity of the Waipu community we were able to donate $1440.00 from our
MAF approved fish auction to the Waipu Lions Club.
None of this would have been possible without our sponsors.
Visit our website www.waipuboatandfishingclub.com for the latest club news,
links and information of our fantastic sponsors.
