The weather was great in Napier as they have had no rain since March. Bit chilly in the mornings though! Sending teachers and Principals into other schools is a great way of bringing back the best to our school. Nearly all the schools I visited were further down the road in developing students IT skills than we are. Most had iPads for all their Year 4 to 6 students and for Year 1 to 3 they had a ratio of one iPad per two students. Schools were not totally digital and still felt book work was important. IPads were generally funded by the school fundraising group or PTA’s. One school of 600 leased half their iPads. Interestingly schools we visited had not heard of Seesaw but were keen to follow up when I explained how Seesaw worked. Some of the schools were working in collaborative spaces or sharing the teaching load between classes. It was interesting to see how this worked and is something we may look to do in the future as our school is modernised. Another area we looked at involved a child’s transition to school from their preschool learning. Much of this was based on a creative play style of learning. Students were taught in small groups and then returned to their play activities. Two of these schools were into their second 4/5 year ERO review cycle (Waipu is in it’s first) and it was easy to see why as they were doing all the these things well and getting good National Standard results. There were a number of other small things we discovered that may or may not tweak the way we do things at Waipu. Some of these relate directly to teaching practice and student achievement. STAFF CHANGES Julie Lumb is now our cleaner. She now has two roles at our school. Three if you include parent. Our new teacher aide for rooms 10 and 11 will be Sabrina Black. ORCHIDS FOR SALE We have been given a large number of orchids to sell. The funds we receive will go towards our Good Fairy Fund. CALF CLUB DAY For those keen to get started early with calf and lamb selection you can pick your animal soon. All animals must be born on or after July 1. Waipu Primary School will be taking part provided the weather is reasonable. There are prizes for those who are best dressed in tartan. It would be great if all of our children could find a small piece of tartan to wear in the parade. The parade begins at 11am by the Waipu Police Station.
