Website: www.breambaynews.co.nz Does this rubbish belong to you? Rural residents of Bream Bay are having to deal with more and more illegal dumping of rubbish on road verges and in their gateways. A North River farmer said he had heard a vehicle back into his gateway at around 4am and in the morning discovered this pile of rubbish. There was an old couch, tyres, a blue plastic barrel full of oily rags and lots of bottles and beer cans strewn about. He loaded the stuff in his ute and delivered it to the Uretiti rubbish collection depot. He searched through the junk to see if there was any evidence showing who it belonged to and PH: 438 9452 34 Albert St Whangarei Div. Later that morning the Waipu pipe band paraded and there was a competition with a $50 prize for the best tartan outfit. See photos on page 12 Continued on page 3. My fax machine has just switched itself on and is making strange gurgling noises. The notice on the screen says “Cleaning” which it has decided to do without any instruction from me. My six- year- old cellphone has become obsolete. I had a strained relationship with even that outmoded piece of technology. Most of the time I didn’t know where it was. However to communicate with young people these days it seems you need a mobile, so I went out and bought an i Phone with a smart white case. That would impress them I thought. Now these are tricky little gadgets. You can just talk to them and they will phone someone for you, but be very careful. I was playing around trying to figure out what all those colourful little symbols on the screen were about and accidentally must have turned on the voice activation mode. The phone leapt into life and announced in an alien American accent that it was “Phoning Ena” – which I don’t think I had told it to do. Before I remembered how to turn it off there was my daughter Ina’s voice talking out of my i Phone. It was 11pm but luckily she had just got back from a session at the gym and the call hadn’t woken her. It left me feeling a bit intimidated though. Goodness knows what my phone will decide to do next. There is a three - week jump between this and the next issue of the Bream Bay News, which gives me a week’s holiday. I am swallowing garlic pills and sipping lemon drinks to try to prevent any of those winter viruses getting me. They often take hold, I find, when I slow down and relax. My poor brother has just taken a much - needed 10 - day break with his wife in Aitutaki but spent half of it in bed with pneumonia. He works too hard. It’s crazy the way the world is – some people working every hour they can get and others bored and under - employed. Geoff (my husband) stayed up and watched the last night of TV7 on Saturday. He saw a documentary about how half the food produced in America gets thrown away, while there are 10 million people in that country who don’t get enough to eat. Another piece of craziness! Some enterprising young men are now feeding themselves and their families by raiding supermarket dumpsters. What would the world be like if everyone just did their bit and if resources went to the places they were most needed? I think we need an army of bossy, sensible, grey haired grandmothers to try to sort out some of this muddle. First step in the development of our common sense brigade could be helping all the grannies to master their i Phones. lyn Mari THE BREAM BAY NEWS is published by Bream Bay News Ltd. • Address :RD 2, Waipu • P/Fax (09) 432 0209 • Mbl: 027 432 0070 • email: [email protected] Editor: Marilyn Cox, Accounts: Susan McRae Production: Geoff Spencer Advertising design: Megan Lea Printed by Horton Media Phone the BREAM BAY NEWS 432 0209 if you know of something Dynamic Accounting Ltd interesting happening in Bream Bay. Waipu Hall project wins Pub Charities grant The Waipu Joint venture group has received a $92,500 boost to its plans to refurbish the Waipu Coronation Hall by way of a grant from Pub Charities. The Waipu group gained the fourth biggest sum announced in this month’s list of grants behind, The Spirit of Adventure Trust - $500,000, the Royal NZ Ballet - $373,994 and the Canterbury Steam Preservation Society $123,404. The Pub Charities grant announcement comes on the heels of news last month that the Whangarei District Council would be putting aside $600,000 in its Long Term Plan to go towards the upgrade of Waipu’s hall facilities which, as well as a $410,000 Coronation Hall upgrade, includes the construction of a new Celtic Barn capable of seating up to 700 people. Jill Mutch, of the Waipu Venture group said the committee is “over the moon” at the latest announcement and would be able to begin the much needed refurbishment of the Waipu Hall. Think Atlas Concrete A year after first setting up, The Waipu Joint Venture group is achieving great progress. The WJV group recently entered a submission to the Whangarei District Council Long Term Plan. WJV Chairman Richie Guy spoke at the hearing and pointed out the need for a large facility in the wider Bream Bay area to cope with existing large events including the Highland Games, and to allow for growth in school rolls and the surrounding district. As a result, the Celtic Great Hall project and the Waipu Hall refurbishment are now registered in the Long Term Plan, and a Council grant of $600,00.00 has been promised towards the entire project. The WJV group is absolutely delighted with the level of Council support. Richie Guy commented that the Whangarei District Council appreciated the district efforts in fundraising, after the group raised $20,000.00 at the recent dinner featuring Eric Rush. It was noted that Waipu and Bream Bay have proved their capability in holding successful large functions, in spite of the lack of a large enough public hall. The WJV group is now seeking further community financial support and grants to enable the project to get under way as soon as possible. Applications for Grant funds are currently being made to Pub Charity and the Lotteries Commission. • We quarry the aggregate • We manufacture the concrete • We site visit to advise the best options • We give you the choice of mix and colours • We give a choice of local placers for you to choose • We manufacture concrete to your requirements • We stand by our product, you stand on it Sonshine Print - Waipu 2010 $WODV&RQFUHWH Atlas Concrete <RXU)LUVW&DOOIRU&RQFUHWH Your First Call for Concrete 3K%U\QGHUZ\Q Ph: 0800 888303 - Brynderwyn RU5XDNDND or 432 5030 - Ruakaka Consulting Engineers Engineering Northland since 1976 > Geotechnical Reports > Resource Consents > Project Management > Wastewater/Onsite Effluent > Foundation Design > Retaining Design > Stability/Flood/Dam Assessment P 09 438 9529 F 09 430 4282 E [email protected] I was wondering if there is something you can help with. Yes its Stage Challenge time! Wednesday 20th June was the day and Forum North was the destination. An early start saw 97 Bream Bay College students, from Year 7 – 13, board the coaches with a mixture of nerves, excitement and anticipation as to what the day had in store. The theme this year was Mental Health and the Bream Bay College entry told the story of Madison, a teenage girl caught in a dark world of depression and fear. The story showed how people with a mental health issue were treated in the past compared with how mental illness is treated today. Anita Carr and Jo Lane-Moor were the driving force behind this year’s entry. The other choreographers were Danielle Newton, Jaime Newton and Sarah Buckland. These girls took time and effort to choreograph some effective dances. Backstage set makers were Kevin Mooney and Scott Welsh. Costume designer extraordinaire Elyse Williams designed and made over 40 costumes, ably assisted by Eilish O’Brien. The Bream Bay College performance received the following Awards of Excellence : Drama, Performance Skill, Choreography, Stage Use, Student achievement, Visual enhancement. The school also received an award for the Best Back Stage Crew (Noah Smith, Scott Welsh, Kevin Mooney, Jordan Riley, Melanie Joyce, Liam Fuller, Laura Andrews, Cassidy Potich, Emily Porter, Ella Stolwerk and Lucy Goffin). 25!+!+! !5#4)/.*5, ¼8±´Xa(»*8X 0RUWJDJHH$XFWLRQ)LQLVKPHRIISOHDVH 3DUWO\FRPSOHWHGSURMHFWEHGURRPZHDWKHUERDUGKRPH LQQHHGRIPD\RUFRPSOHWLRQ6LWHGRQKDDOVRLQ QHHGRIDWWHQWLRQ(QGOHVVSRVVLELOLWLHVIRU\RXWRH[SORUH &ORVHWR5XDNDNDWRZQVKLS&9&DOOPHIRU PRUHGHWDLOV ±¼t8taaÏÁO¼~´|amma8´a (8±»ÉOa»aX±aO»¡¼¹rFaX±Ça8»|a±F8±X|aaaXm8ɱ Oa»¡+»aXo¡¼¼Í|88´aaXm8»»a»¡Xa´´´´F»a´m± ÉÀ»aȱa¡ ´a»*À8 8 8»Ç´|¡ 2^rfÍVÍÍÍ¡ 8am±±aXa»8´¡ $8&7,21)ULGD\-XODP2QVLWH ÏÁO¼U 23(1+20( ±X8ɸÀUÍÍ8¡¡ ´»a %UHQW&DVH\+DUFRXUWV5XDNDND ±a¼ 8´aÊ *À8 8 8 aaU 6XQ-XQSPSP &DVH\5HDOW\/WG/LFHQVHG$JHQW 5($$ U Ír¼¿·Í¿o U Í¿¿·¿¿·¼ +À·ÀUÍÍ¡¡~U¼Í¡¡V+À¿rÀUÍÍ¡¡~U¼Í¡¡ U F±a»¡O8´aÉD|8±OÀ±»´¡O¡Ì 30 6XQ-XQSPSP 23U ÇÇÇ¡|8±OÀ±»´¡O¡Ì¹*¿¿ *2U rfÍVÍÍÍ¡ÍÍ ÏÏ*ÏU o¡¼¼8 (EUHQWFDVH\#KDUFRXUWVFRQ] 9,(:ZZZKDUFRXUWVFRQ]5.. The Heads up for Kids collection began in 2010 and asks people to dig out and donate obsolete New Zealand currency and foreign money they may have lying around. This is redeemed for New Zealand dollars and used to provide education programmes and scholarships for New Zealand youth. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand estimates there is $116 million in old NZ coins and bank notes unaccounted for. Lions Clubs around New Zealand aim to collect together $1 million of this. In March this year the tally was 10 tonnes of coins, worth $300,000. In Bream Bay old coins can be dropped off at the Ruakaka Westpac Bank or at the Waipu Pharmacy. Latest round of Waipu Opportunity Shop Grants The Waipu Anglican Opportunity Shop decided on the following grants at its June Committee meeting: $1000 for the Ruakaka Scout Group, $1,000 for Project Promise (fundraising for a new oncology unit in Whangarei), $1000 for the McBirney Trust (which provides scholarships to Bream Bay College students), $1000 to the Bream Bay Coastguard, $1000 to Marsden St John, $500 to Ronald McDonald House, $500 to the Fred Hollows Foundation and $500 to Marine Reach Ministries – which transports practical aid to communities in need around the world. Ruakaka South Sewer Extension Work is progressing well on the Ruakaka South Sewer Scheme Extension. We received 145 responses to the notifications we sent out to the owners of 168 properties in Area 6 (the Ruakaka Beach area), and we have now completed 105 site visits. The next step in the Digger carrying a pump station into the rear of a property project will be to obtain building consents for the works to be carried out on your property. After we visit each site we will provide a Landowner Physical Works Consent Form. It is important that the form is filled out, signed and returned to us (Fulton Hogan) because it allows us to act as the agent throughout the consenting process. So far we have received 70 signed authorities. As of 2 July our project team will be starting physical works around the Ruakaka Beach Area (Area 6). Works will involve the directional drilling of the reticulation pipes within the grassed berm area of the road reserve and installation of onproperty pump stations. The work should be completed in this area by the end of November. We will be in contact with you to advise when your property requires access for both electrical and installation works. With physical works commencing it is important for us to consider Health and Safety around construction sites and how the community and we keep each other safe. While the construction plant used is relatively small and the depth of excavation relatively shallow, any work site creates both hazards and interest especially for the younger folk. We will shield unattended excavations with temporary fencing. If you see children playing on or near construction plant or excavations, please ask them to move on for their own safety. Trucks, construction plant, workers and utes can all restrict the previous access way, roads and footpaths that you traditionally use. Please pay attention to the road signs and any Traffic controllers that may be engaged. Remember that the inconvenience of construction works is only temporary. If you see any area where we can improve the safety for both our teams and the general public, please contact Jody at the Site Office on 0800 Rua-Sewer or 0800 782-73937. . A history of the Anglican Church in Bream Bay The Reverend Des Olney has written a 19 page booklet entitled “A short history of the Anglican Church in the Bream Bay Area.” Beginning in the 1960s when Waipu was part of the Paparoa Parish he describes how the the Waipu and Ruakaka areas combined to become the Bream Bay Parish and how Waipu’s St Peter’s Church and Ruakaka’s St Paul’s Churches came into being. He lists all the clergy who have served in the district with his own name occurring a number of times as priest and assistant priest. He dedicates a page to the Mission to Seafarers at Marsden Point and another to the Waipu Opportunity Shop which was originally opened in 1983 to help meet the payment of a stipend for the parish minister. An interesting piece of history is that the site at the corner of Sime Rd., and Marsden Pt. Rd now occupied by the Marsden Tavern was once the Anglican vicarage. Des describes how when the Whangarei County Council purchased the Sime Estate in the 1960s a condition included in the purchase by Mrs. Sime, a practising Anglican, was that an acre of land be given to the Anglican Church. A Keith Hay pre-built house was purchased and located here by the church. However no formal title was arranged for the site and when the County plan came out the site was designated for a hotel. Copies of the history are available from Reverend Des Olney – Phone 432 7778 at $10 each with proceeds going to parish funds. ish Moodys Chartered Accountants Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ensure that your financial affairs are • Annual Accounts handled by qualified professionals. • Income Tax Come and talk to us. • GST Returns Free initial consultation. • Audits • Company Formations Town Centre Ruakaka • Budgets Ph: 432 8486 Bream Bay News Page 8 5 July 2012 Dressing up in Tartan Prize winners: Sisters Jenny Jeffies and Helen Morrison of Te Atatu took the prize for the best tartan outfits. Senior Constable Martin Geddes of the Waipu Police said it seems they entered through a window on the South Rd. side of the building and left out the back, heading through the Caledonian Park with stolen alcohol and a small amount of cash. They left behind a mess of broken glass for staff to clean up before the restaurant could open to serve breakfasts to people who had come out early to play in the snow delivered to its the car park that morning by the Classic Hits Radio station - part of the annual Winter in Waipu celebrations. Constable Geddes suspects the break - in may have been to replenish alcohol supplies for a party. He asks local residents or people who may have been in Waipu in the early hours to report anything which could help him track down the burglars. life. 3 January 1927 – 17 June 2012 Ivan Bartulovich, Waipu and Ruakaka’s former chemist was remembered at his funeral service in St Peters Anglican Church, Waipu as a man with a strong community spirit and a tremendous zest for life. In fact as a member of the Waipu Anglican Church vestry committee, Ivan had been part of the team which built St. Peters and he had insisted that each of his three children Lee, Julie and Paul be married there The three were adopted as Ivan and his first wife Rosemary could not have children. Ivan Bartulovich Daughter Lee said at the service “We knew we were very much wanted children and our parents did everything they could to make our lives magical.” Julie said her father was “a great dad and very special.” Julie lost her husband six months ago and Ivan, although his own health had not been good over this time, had been very concerned about her welfare and constantly in touch asking how she was. Ivan grew up in Birkenhead on Auckland’s North Shore and, as a young man, played rugby league for the Northcote Club. He twice played in trials for selection to the Kiwis. He also had an interest in sailing and helped to build a racing yacht in which he participated in races from Auckland around the Hen and Chicken island.s He moved north to purchase his own business in Kaikohe and then in Maunu before taking over the Waipu Pharmacy in 1964. Tony Solomon, Waipu’s present day pharmacist, was an apprentice with Ivan at the Brown Pharmacy in Birkenhead and came north at Ivan’s suggestion, purchasing the Waipu business from him in 1974. Tony remembers how in Northcote they manufactured ant killers, shampoos and a Recipe 25, which became Ivan’s famous WOW cough mixture. “You wouldn’t be allowed to mix that stuff up today but it certainly did the trick”, said Tony. The cough mixture carried the label “Made especially for Bream Bay coughs or other coughs belonging to discerning coughers. Brace yourself, take a deep breath then SLOWLY SIP five mil.” . “We categorically denied it contained dynamite. Customers just believed it did,” said Ivan. After selling his Waipu business to Tony, he started up a new pharmacy business in Ruakaka at first under the Bream Bay Club working with Dr. Gibson who had a surgery in his home in Camellia Avenue and then moving into new premises in the Ruakaka Shopping Centre. He sold this business to Ken Orr in 1986. Ken said, “Ivan was quite a guy.” He and Rosemary lived at Langs Beach where Ken’s family had a bach so the two families had a long association. Ken said it was very sad when after they had both worked hard for so long soon after they sold their Ruakaka business and retired Rosemary was diagnosed with cancer. After Rosemary’s death Ivan moved to One Tree Point. He married Anne Stephenson in 1994. Ivan had a strong sense of community. As well as serving on the Anglican Church vestry, he was a founding member of the Waipu Lions and served on the first Bream Bay College board of Governors. He was a member of the Waipu Golf Club and held, at different times, the positions of Club President and Club Captain. In the early 1970s he helped to expand the course to 18 holes and to build the present clubhouse. He was passionate about the game and never tired of telling people about its many benefits. He remained the club’s patron up to a year before his death. In his early days in Waipu Ivan had published a newsletter, The Bream Bay Pharmacy News. It carried advertising and news items about balls and other upcoming events. In 1967 Mrs Wynn Stephens asked Ivan, if he would allow her to take over his Waipu newsletter and expand it to serve Ruakaka and One Tree Point as well. This became The Bream Bay News. The event was on the 19th of May, and involved climbing up 51 stories, a total of 1103 steps. He then went on to mention that we need do it in full fire fighting gear including wearing breathing apparatus. The reason for doing this was to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. It was a win- win situation. We got to raise money for a great charity, and we got to raise the profile of the Fire Service. Within a few minutes Karl, Darrin and Grant had committed to the event, and Turi never had an opportunity to let us know that he was only kidding. Completely separately and unbeknown to us Aynsley had been training, and had her eye on the event for some time. Somehow we all got together and five quickly became eight. The husband and wife combo of Barry and Jean, and Andy. So now we had representation from both local brigades Marsden 22 and Ruakaka 17. Aynsley, Jean, Andy and Barry are members of both brigades. All of us work for or at Refining NZ. Our team was near complete. We were going to need a lot of help and that’s when Grant Harrington (Harry) stepped up to help us with the logistics. Our team was entered and training stepped up as reality set in. Though we all work at Refining NZ, training together was near impossible with half on shift work and half on day work. Mostly we trained on our own, pairing up where we could. It involved lots of walking, running, and of course heaps of stair climbing. We trained at Mt Parihaka, Whangarei Hospital, the beach and the reactor structure at Refining NZ. The training was hard and became all-consuming for most of us but that was half the reason for doing this. The other half was to raise money. We set ourselves an ambitious team target of $5000 and began to hit up friends, family, and work mates. We were totally blown away by the generosity of every one. The support was unbelievable and we very quickly reached our target. It didn’t stop there, the money kept on rolling in. We also asked on and off site local business for support and they to responded. On the day of the event we were all very nervous. For some reason the organisers had split the team into Marsden and Ruakaka so we started at different times which was unfortunate. It was an amazing feeling being a part of something so big. There were firefighter’s everywhere and fire appliances lined the streets, as some firefighters were still on duty. Refining NZ made sure we looked the part. We looked impressive in our new fire suits and breathing apparatus, but the real hit was our helmets. We looked more like fighter pilots with our reflective retractable visors all individually named. The wait between scrutinering and actual on your Grant McCullum, Andy Hughes, Darren Sawford, Anysley Laurance, Karl Diamond, Grant Harrington, Jean Maunder, Barry Maunder. The ninth member of the team, Turi Fricker was absent when this photo was taken marks get set go seemed like hours, but once they said go, adrenalin kicked in and legs started pumping. The heat was outrageous, the stairs went for ever, the lungs were not big enough, the weight was too much! Then there was the finish line the, legs were good, the weight was nothing, and it wasn’t so hot. We had done it. All eight of us completed it in times faster than any of us had anticipated. Our training had paid off; we all admitted on reflection that we held back a little, due to the unknown. Turi was the fastest, but there were only a few minutes between the lot of us. The star performance was from Jean. In her category she was 4th and only 3 seconds away from a bronze medal. Immediately after the event you couldn’t get the smiles off our faces. We were buzzing. It had been a great day, one that we weren’t going to forget. Some of us had to return home, some of us went out with our families to celebrate while Harry and Aynsley went to the official dinner and awards. Later the in the evening, after returning from dinner, we got to our rooms to find Harry and Aynsley standing in the hall of hotel grinning from ear to ear. “Look what we’ve got” It was a large Cup and small trophy. We had won the prize for raising the most, a total of $16,355. We were stunned, thrilled truly elated. There were around 100 teams among the 500 individual firefighter’s raising a total of $331,332 nearly double last year’s total. Refining NZ paid for: our entry fees, our accommodation, team jackets, hats and tee shirts. Marsden 22 Brigade supplied us with all new equipment, and training equipment. They also supplied a vehicle to transport the equipment. The shift workers were granted special leave so they could attend the event. Refining NZ were also our largest donor. Other local business that contributed to our cause were: RHJ Builders Ltd, Jandals Bar & Grill, Macsway Scaffolding Ltd, Yamaha Motorcycles, Waldron Financial Services, Marsden Flyer, Surfline Custom Surfboards, One Tree Point Motel, One Tree Point Store, Marsden Point Construction Ltd, Ruakaka Motors, Bert Rowsell Panelbeaters, Contract Resources, Waterline Restaurant and Bar, Industrial Site Services (ISS), Newey Transport, Whitehead Signs. Nola Wortelboer 4 April 1932 – 12 June 2012 Nola and Ben Wortelboer of One Tree Point had celebrated 50 years of marriage in May shortly before Nola’s death . The couple were married in Hamilton where Nola, an only child, had lived with her parents. They met on an outing organised by the Catholic Bishop of Auckland for new immigrants to Auckland. Ben had not long arrived from the Netherlands. Ben said it was Nola’s “cheeky smile” which caught his attention. Prior to her marriage Nola worked for the aid agency CORSO helping to organise relief shipments of food and medical supplies to parts of the world where they were desperately needed. Ben said, “The pay wasn’t that good but it was something she liked doing.” The newlyweds lived in Warkworth where Ben and his brother, who were both motor mechanics, ran a workshop. Forty - five years ago they moved to Marsden Point setting up a service station with a home behind at the intersection of what was then Marsden Point Rd. and One Tree Point Rd. They had four sons, the eldest Fennad they adopted believing they could not produce children. Three more sons John, Paul and Tim were born to them after this. The name Fennad is a shortened form of Ben’s father’s name Ferdinand. Ben -“The custom in Holland was to name your first son after his grandfather but Nola didn’t like the name Ferdinand. She said it was a good name for a bull and their son would be teased if he had this name. Then I had the thought, ‘How about Fennad?’ and Nola agreed.” Ben says in a successful marriage you have to be able to “give and take.” As well as running the home and looking after her Funeral Directors four children, Nola helped on the petrol pumps at the service station and would make cups of tea for people waiting for their cars to be repaired in Ben’s workshop. The family twice travelled to Holland to visit Ben’s relations and Nola fell in love with that country and would have been happy to live there. Nola Wortelboer “I had to say to her, ‘Hang on a minute, we can’t just leave our business and everything”, Ben said. A devout Catholic, Nola taught Bible in Schools at Ruakaka and One Tree Point Primary Schools and would send letters with prayers enclosed to anyone in the local Catholic community who was suffering difficulties in their life. During the last few months of her life Ben estimates, she gave away 30 sets of rosary beads. “She would tell people, ‘you don’t need to say the rosary, just hang on to the beads and they will help.” Fourteen years ago Ben and Nola built a new house at Paradise Point with a view over Whangarei harbour and Nola was very happy living there. When she was given the news that doctors could not help her and she only had a short time to live she asked to go home and Ben agreed to look after her himself. She died peacefully in her own bed. Trevor Challenger 1948 - 11 June 2012 Trevor Challenger the groundsman at the Marsden Oil Refinery died suddenly at his home in Takahiwai on 11 June. Trevor’s first home was a small farm in South Rd. Waipu. His farther did contracting work and milked a small herd of 20 cows. Trevor was the youngest in a family of four. He was educated at the Waipu District High School and left at the age of 15 to go farming. “He was always very fit and played rugby for Waipu”, said his sister Maxine. He had a change of scene in the mid 1970s when he moved to Taneatua, near Edgecombe in the Bay of Plenty where his first wife Charmaine hailed from. On his return to Bream Bay in 1978 he became a partner in the contracting firm of his brother - in - law Bob Cann. Cann and Challenger Ltd. did general cartage work, septic tank cleaning, and won a big contract at the Marsden Point Refinery for gully cleaning. When the firm ceased operations, Trevor stayed on at the refinery with a lawnmowing and general maintenance contract. At the time of his death Trevor had plans to bring his son Duarne into the contracting business. “He was a very fit hardworking man,” said Maxine. “He would do anything for anyone. If he saw a need people didn’t even have to ask.” Phone the BREAM BAY NEWS 432 0209 if you know of something interesting happening in Bream Bay. How the west was beaten By Trevor Reader swerving run all the way to the try line beating 6 or 7 players on the way. The most dominant and satisfying try belongs to the forwards and their push over from a scrum 10 metres out. The control to keep the scrum square and the power to shunt Southern backwards was awesome. Just as Southern were staging a come back with more procession and some good running in the backs, it was time to bring on Blake Grey. His instructions were to stop their mid field attack. One bone crunching tackle and the job is done. A quick turnover and the momentum is back with Waipu. Another wonderful try to Chris Smith and we are out to 40 points. Two late tries to Southern added some respectability to the score line. This was a very good Waipu display. Our game against Dargaville is best forgotten and only served as a live training session. We ran in 16 tries and 13 conversions. Chris Smith hauled in 46 points to take his tally to over 250 for the season. Waipu plan to be playing at home for the next three weeks in a row. Saturday 7th July. Waipu v Ruawai. the last game of the round Saturday 14th July Waipu v Semi final (probably Pipiwai) Saturday 21st July Waipu v Final (likely to be Whangaruru. Make plans now to support your local team. Waipu 40 - Southern 19, Waipu 106 - Dargaville Old Boys 0 The Southern game was a cracker and rated a 9 out of 10. The game against Dargaville Old boys was awful and hardly rates a mention. Waipu now sit on top of the Division 2 championship ladder 1 point ahead of Whangaruru and with a gap back to Southern and the others. Effectively the threat from the west has been crushed. The loyal supporters and the new fans were treated to some spectacular action when we played Southern the other week. The Southern boys were up for the challenge and once again Waipu was pressurised early but the same pattern emerged with Waipu absorbing the early onslaught and then slowly and surely gaining the upper hand. Waipu scored first with Chris Smith throwing a dummy and slicing through the defence to dot down beside the posts. A conversion two penalties and a Nathan Jones try had Waipu leading 18-5 at half time. The second half was an absolute cracker as the Waipu boys now really believing in themselves and those around them began playing like a championship team. The tries were stunning. The Paul PC Carr was text book draw and pass and follow up. The ball went though many hands, the crisp passing leaving the defence grasping at thin air and PC on hand for the last pass and the dive over try. Samuel Abrahams try was individual brilliance; he received an aimless Southern kick on half way and began a jinking, ducking, and Waipu Mens Golf Wednesday 13 June Par Competition Grant Weston + 6, Jack Campbell + 3, Colin Price +2, Chase McKeown and Mark Draper +1.
