History-sheeter hacked
to death, murderer surrenders
By Our Staff Reporter
Murugan, a 36-year-old
history-sheeter, was hacked to
death and his body dumped on
a roadside in Kanammapettai
(T. Nagar) on Jan. 7.
His body was covered with a
dark blanket to hide blood
stains and give an impression
that someone was sleeping by
the roadside.
A passerby who noticed blood
seeping from under the blanket
alerted the police. A policeman
identified the deceased as
Murugan (a history-sheeter
and resident of Saidapet).
40-year-old Loganathan

confessing to the murder.
Murugan was an accused in
several cases of arson, murder
and robberies.
Loganathan, during interrogation, said that he had come
to know about the illicit affair
between his wife and Murugan
which infuriated him and
prompted him to kill Murugan.
He said that he and his
friends confronted Murugan
when he was in an inebriated
condition and hacked him to
death. Police are on the lookout
for Loganathan’s accomplices.
Loganathan was remanded
to judicial custody.

Trust conducts cancer awareness walkathon
By RANDOR GUY
G. RAMANATHAN - 22
As 1950s rolled over the far blue horizon, G. Ramanathan
was equally active as before, composing music for as many as
seven movies in two years (1956-57), a creditable record
anyone would be proud of as a music composer. Full marks to
the ace composer Ramanathan!
The movies included‘Naan Petra Selvam’ (1956),
‘Ambikapathi’, ‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’, ‘Aaravalli’,
‘Manamagan Thevai’ ‘Karpukkarasi’, ‘Puthumai Pitthan’and
‘Vanangamudi’(all made in 1957). Quite an achievement, that!
‘Aaravalli’ was produced in Modern Theaters by the Salembased movie mogul T. R. Sundaram and was a success mainly
because of the comedian A.Karunanidhi and his team and the
comedy songs. The three songs filmed around them singing
with off-screen voices of noted singers Tiruchi Loganathan and
Sirgazhi Govindarajan became hits and are still popular after
more than half century. Of course, the credit goes to G.
Ramanathan who composed these songs in pure classical
Carnatic music ragaswithout mixing them with ragas of other
schools.
Earlier, there had been a movie ‘Aaravalli Sooravalli’ with
the same story released in 1946, produced by Southern
Theatres, directed by forgotten filmmaker C. V. Raman and
written by G. S. Bhagavathar (Ramanathan’s elder brother)
and shot at Modern Theaters.
Interestingly, Ramanathan had composed the music for
that film too, and it had the well-known actors of the day V. A.
Chellappa and Serukalathur Sama, supported by P. S
Sivabhagyam, Thavamani Devi and others. The film flopped
and nobody remembers it today.
The next version under review, called merely ‘Aaravalli’,
wasshot at Modern Studios and directed by Krishna Rao who
was on its regular pay-roll.
The story is about seven sisters, and is said to have some
links the Hindu epic Mahabharatham. Two elder sisters (G.
Varalaskhmi and Mohana) rule the kingdom enslaving princes,
kings, warriors and such persons of valour having won over
them by asking them to solve puzzles and perform deeds which
are almost impossible to do (like giving a small metal ring to
a big made-man like Bhima and asking him to go through it)!
Those who lose are treated as slaves and forced to do menial
tasks like sweeping floors and milk blind donkeys! The Pandava
hero Bhima (R. Balasubramaniam) goes to take up the challenge
and loses because, with his bulk, he cannot slip through a small
metal ring!
A young prince (S.G. Easwaran) takes up the challenge and
one of the seven sisters (Mynavathi) falls in love with him. How
with her help the prince wins the contests, sets right the
injustice done to the many enslaved princes and also brings
back the dead ones forms the rest of the film.
G. Varalakshmi, the multi-lingual star, plays a main role in
her characteristic vigour and verve. She was of the same
mould in real life too and had slapped even senior actresses on
the set shocking everyone around! Mohana as the younger
sister was active for a few years but soon faded away. Not
many remember her today.
Lyrics were by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, andKa. Mu.
Sheriffwhile the music, of course, was composed by G.
Ramanathan. He sang the title song too off screen.
Easwaran was a cousin of Gemini Ganesh for whom he
worked as manager. For some reasons he left him and decided
to try his hand at acting. He did not meet with much success,
faded away, and involved himself in buying and selling movie
areas as movie mediator.
The film also had movie and stage starV. Gopalakrishnan,
comedians Kaka Radhakrishnan, A. Karunanidhi, T.P.
Muthulakshmi, M, Saroja, ‘Jayakodi ‘ Natarajanand others.
(One of the slave milking a blind donkey was a handsome
young man who soon broke into limelight under the name C. L.
Anandan, playing the hero in movies like ‘Vijayapuri Veeran’
andothers. A Muslim by birth, he was a group dancer in Modern
Theatres and he and his friend (noted choreographer of the day)
Salim used to move around small towns and villages near
Salem in an open truck dancing and collecting money. In later
years, Anandan played the villain roles in some of the movies
of Muktha V. Srinivasan and faded away soon. He is best
remembered for his performance in the Citadel Studios film,
‘Vijayapuri Veeran’.)
The film fared well at the box office and the main reason was
the songs. There were nearly 8 to 9 songs, and the three comedy
songs became hits.
More about these comedy songs follows.

Sir, Govindan Street which connects North Usman Road and G.N.
Chetty Road has a steady flow of vehicular traffic. A concreted stretch
of about 100 meters of the road closer to G.N. Chetty Road junction has
been in a badly damaged condition for over two years. It not only causes
hindrance to motorists but also throws up lots of dust when a vehicle
passes, thereby causing pollution in the neighbourhood. I appeal to
Corporation officials to take remedial action.—S. Rajagopalan, T.

Kudos to Mambalam Times for its diversity in
news content
Sir, Thanks to your pioneering efforts, a number of neighbourhood
newspapers have sprouted in Chennai. However few can match the
diversity of your editorial content. Though it is common for
neighbourhood newspapers to carry only local events and civic issues,
it is quite rare to read reports like ‘CB-CID to probe youth’s alleged
torture in police custody’ as had appeared in Mambalam Times last
week. It is in this context I wish to congratulate Mambalam Times for
its bold approach to report such matters which are equally a part and
parcel of neighbourhood news. The latest report reveals that the probe
by the CB-CID has confirmed the involvement of three police personnel
in the sexual torture of the youth. While the police sometimes have to
resort to ‘third’ degree methods to ferret out the truth, this is a dastardly
act and the offenders need to be suitable punished to set an example
to other officials in the department. – K. Harihar, 20, Brindavan
Street, West Mambalam

‘Boom boom maadus’ arrive for Pongal
By Our Staff Reporter
Ten boom boom maadus
with their owners were seen
taking shelter outside the
Corporation Park on 1 st
Avenue, Ashok Nagar, on Jan.
8.
V. Mariappan (the group
leader) said that they had come
from Periyapalam to earn
some money as boom boom
maadu is popular during
Pongal festival season.
He said that they go around
the streets during day time and
wait outside temples in the
mornings and evenings to earn
money.
He said that a well decorated
cow was considered holy during
the earlier days but has since
lost popularity. “Our cows are
no more hired for auspicious
functions like before,” he said.
He further said that he is
probably the last in his lineage
of boom boom maattukaras
as the earnings are too low for
sustenance. “My two sons have
not taken up this profession
and are employed,” he added.
Maariappan said that
anyone from the neighbourhood seeking boom boom
maadus may contact him at
