Nagar about supply of metro water, the Residents Association took up the matter with the Metrowater Board. To an earlier complaint on the same issue, the local area engineer had stated that the situation was due to certain repairs in the pumping station in Valluvar Kottam and that the supply will improve within 10 days. As there was no respite even after over 20 days, the Association contacted the higher authorities for immediate action. No sooner than the complaint was faxed to Area 8 office, local area engineer Karunanidhi (with whom we had earlier lodged the complaint) and his assistant plunged into action. On March 2, he, his assistant, and a couple of workers arrived for an on the spot inspection. He went around various residential complexes to enquire about supply of metro water. While most of the residents expressed satisfaction, Shreebagh Flats had complaints. He asked his workmen to dig up the spot at once and found blocks in the pipeline. The workmen quickly removed the blocks. The purpose of this letter is to thank Karunanidhi but for whose action residents of Shreebagh Flats would have gone without water for days together. – V. S. Jayaraman, Secretary, Motilal Street Residents Welfare Association. TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 56 When the MRA’s play was staged at the Vijaya - Vauhini Studios, Meiyappan sent his wife Rajeswari Meiyappan, his son Murugan and his General Manager G. Ranganathan to watch the play. As his wife was not much familiar with the English language, he had sent his Senior Studio Executive to accompany her. By sheer accident, Narayana Iyengar, his daughter-in-law and other members of his family were also present seated in the front row a few chairs away! Narayana Iyengar had not met or even seen Mrs. Meiyappan for nearly twenty long years. People change in appearance during such a long time and chime. Wondering that the face seemed familiar, Iyengar glanced at her trying to place the lady! After the play was over he accosted Ranganathan and made a discreet inquiry about the lady. Then he spoke to Mrs. Meiyappan and made enquiries about her husband. After some small talk he invited her to come home the next evening along with her husband and children for ‘tiffin’. (‘Tiffin’ is a typical word in Indian English - now referred as “Indlish” - meaning ’short eats’ or ‘high tea’. Mostly in use in South India, it is said to be derived from two words ‘tea’ and ‘bun’! Boards outside many South Indian modest low-priced restaurants have the words, “TIFFIN READY!” which puzzle foreign visitors, especially Americans!) Next morning Narayana Iyengar rang up and spoke to Rajeswari Meiyappan to remind her about the tiffin invitation. Meiyappan also spoke to him after ages, and promised to meet him in the evening, When he heard his old friend’s voice over the phone after many years, Meiyappan felt thrilled. Later in the evening Meiyappan and Narayana Iyengar met and were reconciled after a lapse of eighteen years. Meiyappan felt the crust of bitterness crumbling away and the old fires of friendship were rekindled once more with feeling and emotion. It was like old times once again. Such was the impact of the play on Meiyappan. Not surprisingly he felt eager to produce the play as a movie and thought about it deeply. He realized the power of the play and its deeprooted message and felt that it could change many human lives as it did his. He discussed it with Frank Buchman who too shared his views. The two became friends and Buchman thereafter continued to send Meiyappan New Year Greetings for many years. In 1967 Raj Mohan Gandhi visited Madras along with his MRA team for staging the play once more in the city and he met Meiyappan. During the chat Meiyappan suggested to him that the play could be filmed and it could benefit many people with its noble message. He pointed out the advantage of making it as a movie which could draw and reach larger audiences than a mere play. Raj Mohan agreed with him and suggested that Meiyappan should produce it because he was the best suited person for the task. While talking to Raj Mohan, Meiyappan recalled the meeting he had had with the former’s father Devadasis Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi’s son, noted Indian journalist and editor of the leading Delhi-based news daily ‘The Hindustan Times’) some years earlier. Devdas had visited AVM Studios where Meiyappan gave him a warm welcome. Devdas had produced a documentary film in Hindi about the political saga of Mahatma Gandhi right from his South African mission until his lamented demise on January 30, 1948, and he was eager to have its Tamil version released. Devdas Gandhi had married Lakshmi, daughter of the great leader and intellectual giant of the 20th century, Rajaji, and Meiyappan felt a kinship for Devdas as a son-in-law of Tamil Nadu. When Devdas raised the matter of budget for the production of the documentary in Tamil, Meiyappan spontaneou-sly responded offering to have it made free of cost and place his studio and its facilities at Devdas’s disposal. As an admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, Meiyappan felt happy and derived a sense of justifiable pride, privilege and honor of having done his humble service and rendered homage to his idol. Family or bachelors also. A quarrel between a 2-wheeler rider and a bus driver on the North Usman Road flyover led to a traffic holdup for a few minutes at 11 a.m on March 1. The squabble arose when the rider of the motorcycle (TN 02 D 3603) tried to overtake the route M27 bus (TN 01 N 4326) but was prevented from doing so. When the bus halted at the stop at the end of the flyover, the motorcyclist parked his vehicle in front of the bus and got into an argument with the bus driver. Seeing this, crews of other buses halted their vehicles and got down to support their colleague. When members of the public also started taking a hand, the motorcyclist left the place quietly and normalcy was restored.
