When the ‘Tiger’ of Bombay slept his last instalment in
his lair in the hospital, the self-confessed political cartoonist must have laughed silently at the antics of the poor fools
and the peccadilloes of the fly-by-night loonies who had
sprouted up in his cartoonisque empire .
Though he knew that he was on the brink of a far, far
better peace than he had ever known, which is the constitutional right of every human being of this beautiful globe,
he felt let down by allegations of corruption made against
some of the instant heroes of our money land like Robert
Vadera, Gadkari and their cronies too numerous to be
chronicled.
This new menu gave good old Balasaheb Thackeray
dyspepsia which led to a chain of reactions that was too
much for his 86-year old body to fight, and he meekly
proceeded to meet his maker. He should have stuck to
cartooning in the absence of the great Shankar as did his
tribe of laughter producers like R.K.Laxman, Keshav and
Co who still appear like the sun to make our mornings lively
and light and to make us brave enough to ignore the slings
and arrows let fly by the fly-by-night politicians.
I hope Bala’s son would regale us with cartoons as did his
father so that his father would be remembered as a laughter
producer, while the lesser fry would be assigned the role of
bile producers and laughing stock. We do need gallons of
laughter since, as the Reader’s Digest says,”Laughter is
the best medicine”.

and Gandhi Foundation jointly
opened a new health and palliative care center in Tiruvallore on Dec. 13.
Dr. Republica Sridhar (Medical Director) told Mambalam
Times that the new center will
provide free medical care to
the elderly, palliative care for
terminally ill patients, home
care and day care.
She said that community
health volunteers will conduct regular medical camps in
the villages across the district.
She has appealed for donations in cash or kind to assist
the center in its activities.

He told Mambalam Times
that he works part-time in his
father’s tax firm and saved his
earnings to donate Rs. 55,000
recently to the natural calamities fund of Lions Club.
He said that he was motivated by his mother and sister
(who are also members of Lions Club) to purse social work
from a young age.
He further said that he was
willing to guide anyone interested in pursuing social activities and invited youngsters to
join the club.

N. BALASUBRAMANIAN
N. Balasubramanian
passed away on Dec. 7.
He was 77, and had resided
in Mambalam for more than
20 years before shifting to
Velachery in 2001. He had
retired as Vice Principal, A.
M. Jain College, Chennai. He
was an active member in Association of University Teachers. He had authored a Tamil
book titled ‘Naakkum Nalvazhvum’. His wife
Brahada passed away a couple of yeas ago. He
is survived by his mother Janaki Ammal, 3
daughters, one son and grandchildren.
